Guidance about treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in Portugal is very limited, even though depression prevalence is among the highest in European countries. A questionnaire was conducted, followed by two advisory boards with seven Portuguese psychiatry experts, to characterize and discuss MDD and TRD epidemiology, diagnosis, patient journey, treatment options, and unmet clinical needs. Consensus was reached on the main issues. In daily practice, TRD can be defined as moderate to severe MDD episodes with insufficient clinical improvement after two antidepressant treatments, taken in adequate doses and duration. TRD diagnosis and treatment are mostly decided by psychiatrists at public hospitals. Treatment type and duration must be adjusted to characteristics of the patient and the depressive episode, including symptoms, number of previous episodes, comorbidities, and previous treatment response and side effects. The most relevant objectives of TRD treatment are reaching response and remission, prevention of suicide, and improvement of quality of life, functionality, and wellbeing. Regarding pharmacotherapy, antidepressant switch occurs more frequently with non-response, while optimization, combination, and augmentation are considered for patients with partial response. Psychotherapy should be considered in parallel to pharmacological treatment. Brain stimulation techniques are underused. Lifelong treatment is required for recurrent or more chronic TRD episodes, but patient adherence is also poorer in these cases. In Portugal, TRD management is limited by lack of access to specialist care and to many treatment options. These aspects highlight that conventional pharmacotherapy does not lead to remission in many patients and that optimization strategies are frequently necessary to achieve satisfactory treatment outcomes. publishersversion published

Background: Domestic violence is a complex phenomenon that affects families of all races, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic levels. It isincreasingly visible in society and presentsdifferent levels of severity (from insult tohomicide). However, the sociodemographicand clinical aspects of the aggressors are stillpoorly characterized. Aims: The objective of this paper is to undertake asociodemographic and clinical characterizationof the conjugal aggressor in the forensicexaminations submitted to the FunctionalUnit of Psychiatry and FunctionalPsychology of Hospital Magalhães Lemos. Methods: A retrospective study of the medical-legalexaminations performed between January2002 and December 2012, at this Unit concerningcriminal cases for domestic violenceof the “Simple Damage”, homicide andhomicide in the attempted form types. In thispaper we attempt to characterize the profileof the marital aggressor and present the finalconclusions of the expert regarding thecriminal responsibility of the examinands. Results: Of the eighty six medical-legal examinationsconsidered for this study, 92% of the allegedoffenders were men. The mean age was 44.7± 13.7 years. Of those examined, 35% wereprofessionally inactive. Regarding maritalstatus, 41.9% were married, 27.9% weresingle, 25.6% were divorced and 4.7% werewidowers. The victim in 47.7% of cases wasthe husband / wife, 39.5% the partner and12.8% the ex-wife/ex-husband. The examinationswere performed for crime cases of“simple damage” (75.6%), criminal casesof homicide due to marital violence (16.3%)and homicide in the attempted form (8.1%).Of the patients examined 86,0% presentedpsychiatric pathology with 40,7% of addictivebehaviors. 66.3% of the examinandswere considered imputable. Discussion and Conclusions: Psychiatric evaluation should seek to identify psychopathology and risk factors that may precipitate violent acts and, when possible, contribute to its prevention and treatment.Future studies need to be conducted to preventdomestic violence and to improve theeffective enforcement of justice., Introdução: A violência doméstica é um fenómeno complexo que afeta famílias de todas as raças, etnias, religiões e níveis socioeconómicos. É cada vez mais visível na sociedade e apresenta diferentes níveis de severidade (do insulto até ao homicídio). No entanto, os aspetos sociodemográficos e clínicos dos agressores estão ainda mal caracterizados.Objetivos: Este artigo tem como objetivo a caracterização sociodemográfica e clínica do agressor/a conjugal dos examinandos submetidos a perícias forenses na Unidade Funcional de Psiquiatria e Psicologia Funcional do Hospital de Magalhães Lemos.Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo de 86 exames médico-legais realizados entre Janeiro de 2002 e Dezembro de 2012, na Unidade Funcional de Psiquiatria e Psicologia Funcional do Hospital de Magalhães Lemos relativos a processos-crime por violência doméstica de tipo “dano simples”, homicidio e homicidio na forma tentada. Neste trabalho procuramos caracterizar o perfil do agressor/a conjugal, designadamente quanto à idade, sexo, profissão, estado civil e psicopatologia. Foram também consideradas as conclusões finais do perito relativamente à responsabilidade penal dos examinandos.Resultados: Do total da amostra (86 exames), 92% dos alegados agressores eram homens. A idade média de 44,7±13,7 anos. Dos examinandos, 35% estavam profissionalmente inativos. Relativamente ao estado civil, 41,9% eram casados, 27,9% solteiros, 25,6% divorciados e 4,7% viúvos. A vítima em 47,7% dos casos foi o marido/esposa, 39,5% a companheira/o e 12,8% a ex-mulher/ex-marido. Destes exames 75,6% foram efectuados para processos-crime tipo de “dano simples”, 16,3% para processos-crime de violência conjugal por homicídio e 8,1% por homicídio na forma tentada. Dos examinados, 86,0% apresentaram patologia psiquiátrica tendo 40,7% comportamentos aditivos. Foram considerados imputáveis 66,3% dos examinandos.Discussão e Conclusões: Na amostra em estudo, o perfil do agressor/a é de um homem de 44,7 anos, casado, inativo ou com emprego não qualificado e frequentemente com comportamentos aditivos. A avaliação psiquiátrica deve procurar identificar psicopatologia e fatores de risco que possam precipitar atos violentos, e sempre que possível, contribuir para a sua prevenção e tratamento. Estudos futuros precisam ser realizados para prevenção da violência doméstica e para uma melhor e mais eficaz administração da justiça.

This work presents a study carried out with the objective of equipping a composite material with antimicrobial behavior. The composite material was composed by 70% of slate waste and the functionalization of them is applied, in order to further increase its market applications. Nowadays, the materials used in a hospital context, among others, need to have an antimicrobial behavior. In this context two different ways of composite materials funcionalization with this capacity were presented. The materials used to provide the composite antimicrobial finishing material were silver salts. Through the method of functionalization of the material by surface coating, four different compositions of a silver salts , 5%, 8%, 15% and 20%, were tested. By the method of functionalizing the composite in the matrix, i.e. mixing the silver salts in the epoxy resin, the percentages of 5 and 8 were tested. Afterwards, in order to evaluate the antimicrobial capacity of the final products, specific tests according to JIS Z 2801: 2000 standard were performed, with the objective to guarantee an antimicrobial finish that has the capacity to eliminate 99% of the bacteria. This work presents thermal and chemical characterization of EVA waste, and their potential to produce functionally graded materials. Moreover, it were also tested the use of blowing agents and PU foams in order to promote better properties in terms of thermal resistance and different type of mechanical properties along its thickness.

The present work demonstrates the ballistic performance of military helmets based on multiscale composites in which carbon nanotubes (CNT) were added to the matrix. Several composite samples were tested with different percentages of CNT before the helmets production. The ballistic tests performed demonstrate that the composites reinforced with 0,75% CNT present an upgrade in their ballistic performance and a weight reductionaround 30%, when compared to those used to produce conventional helmets in the market., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

In recent years, the metallic materials used in the automotive sector have been replaced by plastic materials. Also associated with this, the recycling or reuse of plastics parts is increasingly important. This work appears framed within a project that intends to substitute thermosetting materials for thermoplastics materials, that will be apply in the automotive sector. So, this article compares two thermoplastics materials reinforced by recycled carbon fibers. In the first case, the used materials were layers of recycled carbon fiber prepreg with polypropylene (PP) and in the second case it were used layers of recycling carbon fiber and layers of PP nonwovens. Both materials were processed by compression moulding process, at the same temperature. After processing, the composite materials obtained were evaluated mechanically, physically and thermally. A flammability test was also carried out to verify if it could be used in the automotive sector. This work evaluates the potential of use of mineral dust waste from stone extraction and processing industries to develop composite materials to construction sector. Actually, a high volume of mineral waste was generated, in a stone extraction and processing industries, without any type of recycling and recovery. In this work, this waste was combined with a biopolymeric material, with different mass ratios, namely 70:30 and 50:50 of mineral waste and polymeric material. To accelerate the curing process, a compression moulding process was used. After that, a several characterization tests were performed, in order to compare the main properties of the composite materials obtained with different mass ratios of mineral dust and polymeric material. The physical and mechanical tests were performed to evaluate the density, moisture absorption, flexural strength and flexural modulus. Besides that, the thermal properties were obtained using an Alambeta testing device. The experimental results show a decrease of density of the composite materials from 2.7 g cm-3 to 2.03 g cm-3, compared with virgin slate rock. In terms of mechanical performance, an increase of flexural strength from 17.1 MPa to approximately 80 MPa was verified between Viroc and the composite materials obtained. In addition to this, an HB rating on flammability test guarantees to the composite materials an excellent capacity to fire resistance. This article evaluates the potential of polymeric waste of electrical cables as a raw material for new products, identifying possible areas of application. In this study, several panels samples were produced, by compression moulding, using only waste of electric cables as raw material, with different weights and particle sizes, which were after mechanically, thermally and acoustically characterized. The increase of weight and the use of smaller particles sizes allows better mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, since it was verified the improvement of required force to reach 25% of the initial thickness to 1774.7 N. It was also verified an increase of thermal resistance with use of smaller particle size and of acoustic insulation for samples with greater weights.
