- Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients who are hospitalized for medical illness remain at risk for venous thromboembolism after discharge, but the role of extended thromboprophylaxis in the treatment of such patients is a subject of controversy. METHODS In this randomized, double-blind trial, medically ill patients who were at increased risk for venous thromboembolism on the basis of a modified International Medical Prevention Registry on Venous Thromboembolism (IMPROVE) score of 4 or higher (scores range from 0 to 10, with higher scores indicating a higher risk of venous thromboembolism) or a score of 2 or 3 plus a plasma d-dimer level of more than twice the upper limit of the normal range (defined according to local laboratory criteria) were assigned at hospital discharge to either once-daily rivaroxaban at a dose of 10 mg (with the dose adjusted for renal insufficiency) or placebo for 45 days. The primary efficacy outcome was a composite of symptomatic venous thromboembolism or death due to venous thromboembolism. The principal safety outcome was major bleeding. RESULTS Of the 12,024 patients who underwent randomization, 12,019 were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. The primary efficacy outcome occurred in 50 of 6007 patients (0.83%) who were given rivaroxaban and in 66 of 6012 patients (1.10%) who were given placebo (hazard ratio, 0.76; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52 to 1.09; P = 0.14). The prespecified secondary outcome of symptomatic nonfatal venous thromboembolism occurred in 0.18% of patients in the rivaroxaban group and 0.42% of patients in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.89). Major bleeding occurred in 17 of 5982 patients (0.28%) in the rivaroxaban group and in 9 of 5980 patients (0.15%) in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 1.88; 95% CI, 0.84 to 4.23). CONCLUSIONS Rivaroxaban, given to medical patients for 45 days after hospital discharge, was not associated with a significantly lower risk of symptomatic venous thromboembolism and death

METHODS In this randomized, double-blind trial, medically ill patients who were at increased risk for venous thromboembolism on the basis of a modified International Medical Prevention Registry on Venous Thromboembolism (IMPROVE) score of 4 or higher (scores range from 0 to 10, with higher scores indicating a higher risk of venous thromboembolism) or a score of 2 or 3 plus a plasma n-dimer level of more than twice the upper limit of the normal range (defined according to local laboratory criteria) were assigned at hospital discharge to either once-daily rivaroxaban at a dose of 10 mg (with the dose adjusted for renal insufficiency) or placebo for 45 days. The primary efficacy outcome occurred in 50 of 6007 patients (0.83%) who were given rivaroxaban and in 66 of 6012 patients (1.10%) who were given placebo (hazard ratio, 0.76; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52 to 1.09; P=0.14). CONCLUSIONS Rivaroxaban, given to medical patients for 45 days after hospital discharge, was not associated with a significantly lower risk of symptomatic venous thromboembolism and death due to venous thromboembolism than placebo. The incidence of major bleeding was low. - Abstract
The possibility of band gap engineering (BGE) in RAlO3(R = Y, La, Gd, Yb, Lu) perovskites in the context of trap depths of intrinsic point defects was investigated comprehensively using experimental and theoretical approaches. The optical band gap of the materials, Eg, was determined via both the absorption measurements in the VUV spectral range and the spectra of recombination luminescence excitation by synchrotron radiation. The experimentally observed effect of Egreduction from ∼8.5 to ∼5.5 eV in RAlO3perovskites with increasing R3+ionic radius was confirmed by the DFT electronic structure calculations performed for RMIIIO3crystals (R = Lu, Y, La; MIII= Al, Ga, In). The possibility of BGE was also proved by the analysis of thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) measured above room temperature for the far-red emitting (Y/Gd/La)AlO3:Mn4+phosphors, which confirmed decreasing of the trap depths in the cation sequence Y → Gd → La. Calculations of the trap depths performed within the super cell approach for a number of intrinsic point defects and their complexes allowed recognizing specific trapping centers that can be responsible for the observed TSL. In particular, the electron traps of 1.33 and 1.43 eV (in YAlO3) were considered to be formed by the energy level of oxygen vacancy (VO) with different arrangement of neighboring YAland VY, while shallower electron traps of 0.9–1.0 eV were related to the energy level of YAlantisite complexes with neighboring VOor (VO+ VY). The effect of the lowering of electron trap depths in RAlO3was demonstrated for the VO-related level of the (YAl+ VO+ VY) complex defect for the particular case of La substituting Y.

- Abstract
Single crystal of Eu3+-doped cadmium molybdate (Cd0.9268▯0.0244Eu0.0488MoO4, where ▯ denotes cationic vacancies) has been successfully grown by the Czochralski method in air and under 1 MPa. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that as-grown single crystal exhibits tetragonal scheelite-type structure (a = b = 5.16188(14) Å; c = 11.2080(5) Å; space group I41/a). Eu3+ions do not show long-range order and they are randomly distributed in CdMoO4framework substituting Cd2+ones. UV–vis diffuse reflectance measurements revealed very close optical band gap (Eg) values, i.e.∼1.74 eV along [100] and [001] crystallographic directions that are twice smaller than Egof microcrystalline pure CdMoO4as well as powder Eu3+-doped single crystal. Magnetic and electrical studies of Eu3+-doped cadmium molybdate single crystal showed a paramagnetic and n-type semiconducting behaviour with the metal-insulator transition above 350 K along both crystallographic directions. Dielectric results analysis using the Cole-Cole fit function revealed that the dipole relaxation process has different time scale depending on the crystallographic direction and exhibits Arrhenius temperature dependence for both studied directions. This fact is accompanied by the colossal dielectric permittivity with εr > 8⋅103. The above results are considered in the framework of narrow europium multiplets of energy comparable to thermal energy.

- Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disorder. The population prevalence is 1.5% to 2.7% in a subgroup of patients having more severe RLS with symptoms occurring 2 or more times a week and causing at least moderate distress. It is important for primary care physicians to be familiar with the disorder and its management. Much has changed in the management of RLS since our previous revised algorithm was published in 2013. This updated algorithm was written by members of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board of the RLS Foundation based on scientific evidence and expert opinion. A literature search was performed using PubMed identifying all articles on RLS from 2012 to 2020. The management of RLS is considered under the following headings: General Considerations; Intermittent RLS; Chronic Persistent RLS; Refractory RLS; Special Circumstances; and Alternative, Investigative, and Potential Future Therapies. Nonpharmacologic approaches, including mental alerting activities, avoidance of substances or medications that may exacerbate RLS, and oral and intravenous iron supplementation, are outlined. The choice of an alpha2-delta ligand as first-line therapy for chronic persistent RLS with dopamine agonists as a second-line option is explained. We discuss the available drugs, the factors determining which to use, and their adverse effects. We define refractory RLS and describe management approaches, including combination therapy and the use of high-potency opioids. Treatment of RLS in pregnancy and childhood is discussed.

- Abstract
We report detailed optical studies of BaWO4:Ce and BaWO4:Ce,Na single crystals. The material does not emit any luminescence at ambient pressure under near-UV (325 nm) excitation. Efficient green light is emitted only at high pressure (HP) and low temperature (LT). The luminescence is of excitonic character, since the lowest Ce3+5d level is degenerate with the conduction band also under hydrostatic pressures. To explain these phenomena, absorption measurements were made together with powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and confocal micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Raman experiments confirm the existence of a metastable phase, induced by certain nonhydrostatic conditions, before the reversible transition at a high-pressure range above 9 GPa, where efficient photoluminescence (PL) occurs. Although the phase transition is reversible, it proceeds with a prominent hysteresis observed in luminescence and Raman experiments. FTIR focuses on the existence of Ce3+multisites observed during LT measurements.

- Abstract
The Czochralski growth of Dy3+-doped (Lu1−xGdx)2SiO5solid solution single crystals with different mixtures of Lu2SiO5and Gd2SiO5oxides (x= 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1) is reported. It was found that the (Lu1−xGdx)2SiO5crystals retain structural, physical, and optical properties of Lu2SiO5even for x= 0.8. Optical investigation of Dy:(Lu1−xGdx)2SiO5revealed that the structural disorder of the host brings about a strong inhomogeneous broadening of Dy3+spectral bands while influencing weakly rates of its radiative and nonradiative transitions. Dielectric characteristics of solid solution crystals are presented and discussed. Finally, (Lu1−xGdx)2SiO5solid solution crystals seem to be an attractive alternative to a Lu2SiO5host for the design of novel phosphors, radiation converters, and lasers owing to a significantly lower melting temperature and hence easier and less expensive manufacturing.

- Abstract
Single crystals of Gd3Al2.5Ga2.5O12, single-doped with Pr3+ions and double-doped with Pr3+and Yb3+ions, were fabricated by the Czochralski technique. Transition intensities and relaxation dynamics of Pr3+ions were determined employing the Judd–Ofelt treatment. Crystal field splitting of excited multiplets of incorporated luminescent ions were determined on the basis of optical spectra recorded at liquid helium temperature. The Pr3+→ Yb3+energy-transfer phenomena were determined analyzing the effect of Yb3+concentration on luminescence spectra and decay curves of Pr3+ions. It was concluded that the observed downconversion phenomenon involves a quantum-cutting mechanism consisting of a two-step energy transfer from Pr3+to Yb3+. We observed a phenomenon of nonresonant conversion of femtosecond pulses of infrared light into visible Pr3+emission that was weakly affected by the wavelength of incident light at least in the 1100–1600 nm region. It was concluded that excitation mechanisms consist of multiphoton absorption of incident infrared radiation involving interconfigurational 4f2–4f15d transitions of Pr3+and/or indirect excitation of Pr3+ions by energy transfer from electrons created in the conduction band of the host.

A brief review of selected models which are currently used to describe the service life of structural systems, especially made of concrete is presented, taking into account influences and processes that cause material destruction and decrease in structural durability of such elements. There are also mentioned the models, verified experimentally in laboratories on simple samples, that can lead to define remaining (residual) service life of deteriorated RC structures. This is of great importance for proper planning and execution of repair works for degraded structural elements to maintain their further functionality. Finally, some examples of real assessment of condition, causes of deterioration and methods of repair of concrete structural elements deteriorated by the influence of industrial environment aggressive agents are presented. The concrete resistance to surface scaling under combined freeze-thaw cycles, sodium chloride solution and external flexural load was experimentally investigated. The test were carried out for non-air-entrained, air-entrained concretes and for concrete with steel fiber reinforcement. The test method for evaluation the resistance to scaling under combined environmental and mechanical actions was proposed. The analysis of the results obtained revealed that including the interaction of freezing and thawing and external flexural load makes change both in the character and the range of surface scaling process. The statistically confirmed synergistic effect of interaction of cyclic freezing and thawing and flexural stress which caused the acceleration of damage process was found. The beneficial effects of an air-entraining agent and steel fibers used for improving the resistance to scaling were stated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Issues related to the processes of maintenance and ensure the continued serviceability of heritage buildings and civil engineering structures are closely related to the processes of assessment of their technical state, repair and strengthening procedures. One extremely important element for a proper diagnosis of the technical condition of historic buildings and also for the adequate design of the actions associated with prolonging their service life should be to perform architectural and structural historical survey. This analysis must be related to the following aspects of construction history occurring during the design and the construction of such objects: design solutions, methods of structural analysis and dimensioning of structural components, properties of building materials, technologies of their production and also the technology of construction. These studies, supported of course by the use of the full range of modern material examination techniques and computational simulations, allow a more complete understanding of analyzed structures. Furthermore, such a program should also contain a prediction of the development of existing or creation of new damages and degradation of the material, as well as guidelines for repair and renovation works in order to ensure structure's further safe operation. From the point of view of the completeness of such a program and with regards to architecture and structural design, its indispensable elements should be both the historical analysis of the design and the construction of the building, as well as of the entire course of its exploitation. Fracture mechanics is widely used to analyze the material behaviour in a structure. The paper reports the results of an experimental programme focused on the effect of various synthetic fibres on the fracture properties of concrete investigated in Mode I conditions. The changes in concrete properties were analysed on the basis of the critical stress intensity factor K Ic , the critical value of crack tip opening displacement (CTOD c ) and the fracture energy G F . The addition of the synthetic fibres had a slight effect on the strength properties of concrete but, at the same time, it had a significant influence on the fracture mechanics parameters by the modification of pre-cracking and particularly post-cracking behaviour of the concrete. Results of measuring the toughness and energy-absorption characteristics showed that the specimens reinforced with synthetic fibres acquired a great ductile behaviour and energy absorption capacity, compared to ordinary concrete specimens. 75. An Algorithm of compromise structural Optimisation of Bar Structures

- Abstract
Authors' own research in applied unicriterial and multicriterial optimisation of bar structures, and also an analysis of accessible bibliography on structural synthesis allows to present herein an attempt to define a general algorithm for proceeding in formulation of a structural optimisation problem. A practical aspect of such an algorithm consists, in author's opinion, in enabling a designer a correct creation of a mathematical model of synthesis problems, independently of known mathematical methods employed to looking for an unconditional extremum of function of several variables. A proposed algorithm is not a ready-for-use tool for solving all the optimisation problems, but it constitutes an easy-to-expand theoretical basis. This basis should allow a designer to create a proper set of compromises on the way to construct a mathematical model of a specific optimisation problem. The algorithm, presented in the paper, is constructed as a sequence of the one-after-another problem questions, on which the designer answers: yes or no, and a set of selections from the knowledge base consisting of the elements of an optimisation problem components. The order of making questions adopted by the authors in the algorithm is subjective, however it is supported by their experience, both in applied optimisation and in designing of structures like trusses or frames.

- Abstract
Dermal bones are formed early during growth and thus constitute an important tool in studies of ontogenetic and evolutionary changes amongst early vertebrates. Ornamentation of dermal bones of terrestrial vertebrates is often used as a taxonomic tool, for instance in Aetosauria, extant lungfishes (Dipnoi) and ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii), for which it have been proved to be of use in differentiating specimens to species level. However, it has not been utilised to the same extent in placoderms. Several features of the ornamentation of Early Devonian placoderms from Hamar Laghdad (Morocco) were examined using both optical and scanning electron microscopy to determine whether it is possible to distinguish armoured Palaeozoic fishes. Four distinct morphotypes, based on ornamentation of dermal bones, are differentiated. These distinct types of ornamentation may be the result of either different location of dermal plates on the body or of ontogenetic (intraspecific) and/or interspecific variation.

Frost damage is considered to be a typical material deterioration in the concrete structures subjected to external environmental conditions. The effect of different types of steel and polypropylene fibers on the surface scaling resistance of concrete subjected to cyclic freezing and thawing in the presence of deicer salt was analyzed. The test parameters included fiber type and dosage and the type of concrete surface subjected to freezing and thawing. Both the cut and cast surfaces of specimens were tested. The dispersed steel reinforcement was found to improve the scaling resistance significantly. However, the effectiveness of fibers was related to their shape and dimensions. The beneficial effect of polypropylene fibers on salt scaling resistance was apparent only in case of the extruded fibers with treated surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThe efficacy of antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is determined by measuring HCV RNA at specific time points throughout therapy using highly sensitive and accurate HCV RNA assays. This study compared the performances of two recently developed real-time PCR HCV RNA assays, cobas HCV for use on the cobas 6800/8800 systems (cobas 6800/8800 HCV) and cobas HCV for use on the cobas 4800 system (cobas 4800 HCV), with those of two established assays, the Cobas AmpliPrep/Cobas TaqMan HCV quantitative test, version 2 (CAP/CTM v2) and the Cobas TaqMan HCV test, version 2 for use with the High Pure system (HPS/CTM v2). The limits of detection (LODs) and linearity at lower concentrations (5 to 1000 IU/ml) were assessed for cobas 6800/8800 HCV and cobas 4800 HCV using WHO standard traceable panels representing HCV genotypes (GT) 1 to 4. Pairwise assay comparisons were also performed using 245 clinical samples representing HCV GT 1 to GT 4. Results from cobas 6800/8800 HCV and cobas 4800 HCV were linear at low HCV RNA concentrations (<0.3 log10IU/ml difference between expected and observed results) with LODs of 8.2 IU/ml and 11.7 IU/ml, respectively, for GT 1. The new assays showed excellent agreement with results from CAP/CTM v2 and HPS/CTM v2 in samples with quantifiable viral loads. The concordances using the 6 million IU/ml cutoff were high among all four assays (90 to 94%). In conclusion, the cobas 6800/8800 HCV and cobas 4800 HCV tests are sensitive and linear and correlate well with the established Roche assays used in clinical practice.

The temperature dependence of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility showed a lack of the Curie-Weiss behaviour and a weak response to the magnetic field. The magnetization isotherms, M(H), showed a paramagnetic-diamagnetic transition at 17 K for 〈100〉 direction and at 35 K for 〈001〉 one in the magnetic field of 70 kOe. - Abstract
Central disorders of hypersomnolence are rare conditions with a poorly understood pathophysiology, making the identification and management challenging for sleep clinicians. Clinical history is essential for ruling out secondary causes of hypersomnolence and distinguishing among diagnoses. Current diagnostic criteria rely heavily on the polysomnogram and multiple sleep latency test. The current focus of treatment of hypersomnolence is on drugs that promote alertness. Additionally, in the case of narcolepsy type 1, medication management addresses control of cataplexy, the hallmark symptom of this disorder. Elucidation of pathophysiology of these disorders in the future will be essential to better categorization and management.

- Abstract
A shortage of available experimental data exists in the available bibliography on the release rate of calcium dobesilate (CD) from hydrogel formulations. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of selected hydrophilic nonionic polymers and anionic polymers on the release rate of CD from formulation provided for dermal application, as compared to the reference product in the market. The work utilized excised pork skin, while, Methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and anionic polymers (copolymers of acrylic acid) were used as CD carriers. The release study was executed by the pharmacopoeial paddle method, with extraction cells and fresh excised porcine skin as a membrane. CD in aqueous acceptor fluid was quantified by UV-VIS spectrometry at 300 nm. Subsequently, the kinetic curves were fitted to a zero-order kinetics model, a first-order kinetics model, a second-order kinetics model, as well as to the Higuchi model. The work saw that porcine ear skin influences the release pattern of the CD, compared to the artificial membrane. In the study, the evaluated formulations with MC, polyacrylic acid (PA) and polyacrylate crosspolymer 11 (PC-11) deliver over 60% of the active component (AC), within 250 min, through the excised porcine ear skin, to the acceptor compartment. Moreover, the release observed via porcine ear skin to the aqueous acceptor compartment is congenial to zero-order or first-order kinetics. In addition, the formulations prepared on the basis of MC and PA appear to control AC delivery, independently of actual concentration of AC.

- Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate, in comparison to the reference product, the effect of the hydrophilic nonionic polymers: methylcellulose (MC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), as well as the anionic polymers - copolymers of acrylic acid, on the release kinetics of a calcium dobesilate hydrogel formulation intended for application on the skin. In this work, we used an ointment cell for the release of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) from the formulations. This release was performed by employing the paddle method at 100 rpm, with the extraction cells placed in the release vessels in two different positions: with the semipermeable membrane faced to the top, or to the bottom of the vessel. Released API percentage was assessed via the validated spectrophotometric method. In the study with standard placement of the ointment cell, the release rates ranged from 4.45×10-3min-1for a formulation containing polyacrylic acid (PA), to 6.96 × 10-3min-1for a formulation based on HPMC. In the group of nonionic polymers, the release rate is higher in the case of HPMC, and lower in the case of MC. In the group of anionic polymers, the release rate is higher with the formulation of a modified copolymer of acrylic acid 11 (PC11), while release from a formulation comprising a polymer PA is rather prolonged. We found that the placement of the extraction cell does not affect the alignment of the formulations investigated in terms of the release rates in the group of non-ionic formulations: HPMC > MC, and in the group of preparation of ionic polymers: PC11 > PA.

Abstract: Many of concrete structures during their working life are subjected to influence of different unfavorable factors that can decrease within time their capacity and serviceability, which finally ends with the need of application of appropriate rehabilitation measures or structure demolition. Issues related to the durability of concrete and reinforced concrete structures in different and continuously variable exploitation conditions touch on all important design and exploitation aspects as: designing and constructing ones, adequate protection of constructional elements against different environmental influences, issues related to the assessment of structure's technical condition in case of damage occurred as well as the repair and strengthening of structures damaged by different agents. An important part of the investigation also concerns life-cycle design and management of concrete structures. The problems mentioned and some ideas of preparing suitable actions in order to extend exploitation time of deteriorated structures are presented on the basis of analysis of the process of structural degradation of an exemplary reinforced concrete load-bearing structure of a pedestrianized walkway with a car-park, built in the early 80's of the XX century. This Note examines the "similar motive" test of Federal Rule of Evidence 804(b)(1) as applied to grand jury testimony offered against the government. Rule 804(b)(1) admits an unavailable witness's prior testimony hearsay when its opponent had a "motive" to develop it at the previous proceeding that was "similar" to the motive its opponent would have at trial However, the U.S. Courts of Appeals have differed in their interpretation of the rule's "similar motive" language with respect to the factors that judges should consider in the admissibility analysis for grand jury testimony offered against the government. This Note examines the development and purpose of the prior testimony hearsay exception as well as recent circuit court cases that have applied Rule 804(b)(1) to grand jury testimony offered against the government. It argues that certain factors commonly considered by courts--primarily prosecutors' strategic use of grand jury questioning--are beyond the scope of Rule 804(b)(1) and should not influence the "similar motive" inquiry. This Note proposes an admissibility test for exculpatory grand jury testimony that avoids consideration of these factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Single crystals of neodymium doped SrLaAlO4have been grown by the Czochralski method and investigated using the methods of optical spectroscopy. Absorption band centered at 806nm is particularly intense in this crystal and this feature seems to be advantageous for side pumping with GaAlAs laser diode bars. Available spectroscopic data indicate that excited states absorption might be of low importance in SrLaAlO4:Nd.

- Abstract
Belief in the paranormal is fairly prevalent in the general population. Previous research has shown a link between several personological characteristics and paranormal beliefs. The current study attempted to further investigate this link by replicating previous models that have shown a link between childhood trauma, fantasy proneness, and paranormal beliefs. In addition, the study attempted to expand on this model by including other variables such as stigma, resiliency, and coping style. The study used a sample of 198 undergraduate students. A significant correlation between trauma and paranormal beliefs was found. Partial correlations and path analyses revealed that fantasy proneness and avoidant coping style fully mediate the relationship between trauma and paranormal beliefs. The results imply that researchers need to take into account how a person responds to trauma via the development of coping strategies to accurately understand any observed relationship between trauma and paranormal beliefs.

- Abstract
Primary pressure determinations involve the measurement of pressure without recourse to secondary standard materials. These measurements are essential for ensuring the accuracy of pressures measured in gasketed high‐pressure devices. In this study, the wavelength of optical fluorescence bands and the density of single crystal Sm‐doped yttrium aluminum garnet Y3Al5O12(Sm:YAG) have been calibrated as a primary pressure scale up to 58 GPa. Absolute pressures were obtained by integrating the bulk modulus determined via Brillouin spectroscopy with respect to volumes measured simultaneously by X‐ray diffraction. A third‐order Birch‐Murnaghan equation of state of Sm:YAG yields V0= 1735.15(26) Å3, KT0= 185(1.5) GPa, and K`= 4.18(5). The accompanied pressure‐induced shifts of the fluorescence lines Y1 and Y2 of Sm:YAG were calibrated to the primary pressure, thus creating a highly accurate fluorescence pressure scale. These shifts are described as P= (A/B) * {[1 + (Δλ/λ0)]B− 1} with A= 2089.91(23.04), B= −4.43(1.07) for Y1, and A= 2578.22(48.70), B= −15.38(1.62) for Y2 bands, where ∆λ= λ− λ0, λand λ0are wavelengths in nanometer at pressure and ambient conditions. The sensitivity in the pressure determination of the Sm:YAG fluorescence shift is 0.32 nm/GPa, which is identical to that of the ruby scale. Sm:YAG can be considered elastically isotropic up to 58 GPa, implying insensitivity of the determined pressure to the crystallographic orientation under nonhydrostatic or quasi‐hydrostatic conditions. The Sm:YAG fluorescence shift is apparently also independent of crystallographic orientation, in contrast to that of ruby. Since the Y fluorescence band of Sm:YAG is insensitive to temperature changes, this material is highly suitable for the measurement of pressure at elevated temperatures. - Abstract
Some aspects of the revitalization of the 14th century historical building are presented in the paper. The building was originally used as a poorhouse and a hospital for children. The original Gothic masonry building on the site was a two-storey building with a cellar, situated in a corner of two streets. In the middle of the 19th century the building was converted into a school and then the first large-scale demolition of the hospital’s Gothic walls took place. After the 2nd World War a school was also situated in the building, where it existed until the late nineties. The aim of the renovation process was to convert it into an exclusive office block. The design works were preceded by historical research and on-site investigations. Complex conversion of the object consisted in the reconstruction of the old building structure, creating the inner courtyard and covering it with a glass roof. In the existing part of the basement one of the longest single-nave vaults in Poland and the exquisite roof truss system with a lying bidding-rafter post deserved special attention during the renovation.

- Abstract
This paper is an overview of structural interventions which should be made to the Baroque Oppersdorf Palace during its renovation. All main technical problems were analyzed and proper constructional solutions were presented. Several characteristic types of destruction were detected, caused by natural deterioration and also by mechanical influences (war destruction, lack of conservation etc.). The main building structure has survived from the Baroque period, except for the wooden roof. Some of the cellar vaults and some of them over the first floor were also not destroyed. However, some main reconstruction work was done, probably in the last few years of the 19th century. For example, a break with a new staircase and some masonry vaults over the cellar were changed to ones of Klein type on steel beams. The main aim of the reconstruction was to strengthen the historical structure of the building and adapt it to the modern architecture and to reorganize the buildings inner space, but keeping the external proportions, architectural details and ornaments unchanged.

- Abstract
Vanadium-doped La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 single crystal (0.05 mol% in the melt with respect to Ga) grown by the Czochralski method has been investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption measurements. The optical energy gap of pure La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 single crystal is equal to 4.94 eV, while the value for vanadium-doped La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 single crystal is 3.44 eV. Optical absorption measurements have revealed 444 nm, 700 nm and 1100 nm bands arising mainly from V3+ ions at octahedral sites. Moreover, V4+ ions were found at octahedral sites (525 nm band) for the “as-grown” crystals and at tetrahedral positions (380 nm CT band and 600- and 800 nm dd transitions) for crystals irradiated with γ-quanta with a dose of 1.2 × 105 Gy. The X-band EPR measurements have been done at room temperature while rotating the single-crystal sample around a, b * and c crystal axes. For each rotation direction the observed spectra consist of an intense multiline signal centred at ∼340 mT and a second, weak one at ∼150 mT. The dominant signal can be ascribed to the V4+ ions (S = 1/2, I = 7/2) occupying the Ga1, Ta octahedral positions, with an axial D3 point symmetry. The principal tensor values are determined as g∥ = 1.925(5), g⊥ = 1.958(5), A∥ = 17.0(5) mT and A⊥ = 5.8(5) mT. Each principal axis of the vanadium paramagnetic centres indeed reveals three different orientations in La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 crystal with respect to the space orientation of the Ga3 tetrahedra connected with the Ga1 octahedron. The low-field resonance signal could neither be ascribed to iron impurities nor to the V4+ ions (S = 1/2, I = 7/2) occupying other (tetrahedral) positions simultaneously creating the vacancy state. This signal was too weak to perform detailed analysis. There are also presented low-temperature EPR spectra that did not reveal any new lines. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

- Abstract
X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, resistivity and susceptibility measurements are used to examine the microstructure and superconducting properties of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4films grown by pulsed laser deposition on LaSrAlO4substrates. The films grow with different degrees of built-in strain, ranging from large compressive in-plane strain to large tensile in-plain strain. While the compressive strain may be attributed to the lattice parameter mismatch between the substrate and the film, the observation of tensile strain is surprising, and the possible origins of the tensile strain are discussed. Films with small built-in compressive or tensile strain, not larger than about 0.02%, grow in quasi two-dimensional (2D) fashion and show sharp superconducting transitions and high transition temperatures. Larger compressive strain induces three-dimensional (3D)-like growth with gradual strain relief across the thickness of the film, and larger tensile strain is observed in the films with columnar growth. Large strain of both types deteriorates superconducting properties.
