Abstract

Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) is a well-known material for electron emission applications. Many works concerning the production of LaB6 thin-films were reported in the last two decades. In particular, PLD demonstrated to be one of the most feasible deposition technique for the synthesis of LaB6 thin films, with optimal results in terms of crystallinity and values of work function lower than 2.8 eV. However, such technique is characterized by a low deposition rate at substrate temperatures higher than 500 °C, required for the proper crystallinity and structure quality. Previous works published in the literature report results obtained by the exclusive use of nanosecond laser assisted PLD. Conversely, a high growth-rate of the films may be correlates to the use of ultrashort pulse lasers as well as deposition at low temperatures. Hence, we propose for the first time PLD assisted by femtosecond pulse laser as an effective method for the development of LaB6 thin films with the desired bulk and surface physical properties to act as excellent thermionic emitters, prepared at room temperature (RT) and with extremely high deposition rates.

Abstract

Diamond is known as a promising electrode material in the fields of cell stimulation, energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors), (bio)sensing, catalysis, etc. However, engineering its surface and electrochemical properties often requires costly and complex procedures with addition of foreign material (e.g., carbon nanotube or polymer) scaffolds or cleanroom processing. In this work, we demonstrate a novel approach using laser-induced periodic surface structuring (LIPSS) as a scalable, versatile, and cost-effective technique to nanostructure the surface and tune the electrochemical properties of boron-doped diamond (BDD). We study the effect of LIPSS on heavily doped BDD and investigate its application as electrodes for cell stimulation and energy storage. We show that quasi-periodic ripple structures formed on diamond electrodes laser-textured with a laser accumulated fluence of 0.325 kJ/cm2 (800 nm wavelength) displayed a much higher double-layer capacitance of 660 μF/cm2 than the as-grown BDD (20 μF/cm2) and that an increased charge-storage capacity of 1.6 mC/cm2 (>6-fold increase after laser texturing) and a low impedance of 2.74 Ω cm2 turn out to be appreciable properties for cell stimulation. Additional morphological and structural characterization revealed that ripple formation on heavily boron-doped diamond (2.8 atom % [B]) occurs at much lower accumulated fluences than the 2 kJ/cm2 typically reported for lower doping levels and that the process involves stronger graphitization of the BDD surface. Finally, we show that the exposed interface between sp2 and sp3 carbon layers (i.e. the laser-ablated diamond surface) revealed faster kinetics than the untreated BDD in both ferrocyanide and RuHex mediators, which can be used for electrochemical (bio)sensing. Abstract

The thermionic-thermoelectric solid-state technology, characterized by solar-to-electric conversion efficiency feasibly > 40%, is comprehensively proposed and discussed for conversion of concentrating solar power. For the first time, the related solar generator prototype is designed and fabricated by developing advanced materials functionalized for the specific application, such as thermally resistant hafnium carbide-based radiation absorbers, surface-textured at the nanoscale to obtain a solar absorptance > 90%, and chemical vapor deposition diamond films, acting as low- work-function (2.06 eV) thermionic emitters. Commercial thermoelectric generators and encapsulation vacuum components complete the prototype. The conversion efficiency is here evaluated under outdoor concentrated sunlight, demonstrating thermionic stage output power of 130 mW at 756 °C, combined to the maximum thermoelectric output power of 290 mW. The related solar-to-electric conversion efficiency is found to be 0.4%, but, once the net thermal flux fed to the conversion stages is considered, a thermal-to-electric efficiency of 6% is revealed. Factors affecting the performance of the present prototype are analyzed and discussed, as well as a strategy to rapidly overcome limitations, in order to prepare an efficient and highly competitive solid-state conversion alternative for future concentrating solar plants

Abstract

Thin films of borides (LaB6 and CeB6) and nitrides (CNx and AlN) were grown by ns (ArF, 193 nm) pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on refractory substrates selected by considering the thermal matching with the thin films in terms of thermal expansion and thermal and electric conductivities. Thin layers of these materials can act as efficient electron emitters for thermionic cathodes operating at high temperature (up to 2000 °C) due to their low work function, typically < 3 eV, and the high melting point. The electron emission was found to depend strongly on the film thicknesses. The physical properties of the thin films were optimized by varying the deposition temperature of the substrates, the target-to-substrate, the atmosphere (vacuum or Ar gas flow). X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) was used to investigate the properties of the deposited thin films. Ultraviolet PhotoSpectroscopy (UPS) and thermionic emission measurements were performed to evaluate the work functions of the emitting layers deposited on the selected substrates.

Abstract

Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) thin-films were grown both by ns (ArF, 193 nm) Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). LaB6 layers can act as efficient electron emitters for high temperature (< 2000 °C) thermionic cathodes due to their low work function (around 2.3 eV). The physical properties of the thin-films deposited by PLD were optimized by varying target-substrate working distance (in the range 30-100 mm), bias voltage substrate (with or without -100 V) and process atmosphere (vacuum and Ar pressure). Scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray spectroscopy (XPS) were used to investigate the properties of the deposited thin-films. Ultraviolet Photospetroscopy (UPS) Thermionic emission measurements were performed to evaluate the work functions of LaB6 deposited on metallic substrates.

Abstract

Dielectric microspacers (DMS) are important components in thermal energy converters. Engineered DMS are fabricated and characterized on different substrates by depositing patterned ceramic thin films of alumina (Al2O3) and zirconia (ZrO2) with a thickness ranging from 0.3 to 3 μm. Both Al2O3 and ZrO2 films are electrically and thermally optimized, finding zirconia more suitable as a thermal and electrical insulating material at high temperature, whereas the developed DMS are morphologically analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The analysis of thermal simulations carried out with COMSOL Multiphysics allows identifying the best geometrical constraints for each single structure, whereas simulations carried out by the Fluent software allow identifying the best arrangement for DMS, leading to a solution with optimized pattern in terms of amount and spatial distribution so to achieve the required electrical and thermal insulation for practical applications. DMS are integrated within thermionic‐photovoltaic devices to be validated experimentally, and enhanced electron emission measurements are successfully performed at a cathode temperature up to 1350 °C to verify the operational feasibility and potential of this technology. Abstract

The rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with patients hospitalized with Covid-19, and associated outcomes are not well understood. This study describes the presentation, risk factors and outcomes of AKI in patients hospitalized with Covid-19. We reviewed the health records for all patients hospitalized with Covid-19 between March 1, and April 5, 2020, at 13 academic and community hospitals in metropolitan New York. Patients younger than 18 years of age, with end stage kidney disease or with a kidney transplant were excluded. AKI was defined according to KDIGO criteria. Of 5,449 patients admitted with Covid-19, AKI developed in 1,993 (36.6%). The peak stages of AKI were stage 1 in 46.5%, stage 2 in 22.4% and stage 3 in 31.1%. Of these, 14.3% required renal replacement therapy (RRT). AKI was primarily seen in Covid-19 patients with respiratory failure, with 89.7% of patients on mechanical ventilation developing AKI compared to 21.7% of non-ventilated patients. 276/285 (96.8%) of patients requiring RRT were on ventilators. Of patients who required ventilation and developed AKI, 52.2% had the onset of AKI within 24 hours of intubation. Risk factors for AKI included older age, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, black race, hypertension and need for ventilation and vasopressor medications. Among patients with AKI, 694 died (35%), 519 (26%) were discharged and 780 (39%) were still hospitalized. AKI occurs frequently among patients with Covid-19 disease. It occurs early and in temporal association with respiratory failure and is associated with a poor prognosis.

Abstract

High-temperature solar cells are possible with Photon-enhanced Thermionic Emission (PETE) devices, which represent a novel and very attractive concept for the exploitation of concentrated solar radiation characterized by promising high conversion efficiency. PETE converters rely on the concept that engineered semiconductor structures can provide a thermionic emission, sustained by the high temperatures induced by thermalization of low-energy photons, that is significantly boosted by hot electrons generated by photons with sufficient energy to produce charge couples.

Abstract

An innovative conversion module (CM) for concentrating solar power applications, named ST2G (Solar Thermionic-Thermoelectric Generator), has been developed and fabricated. The new technology is based on a solid-state converter that works at temperatures up to 1000 °C and exploits a double conversion stage: a thermionic stage and a thermoelectric one, connected thermally in series. Potentially, the CM could reach a combined solar energy-to-electrical efficiency larger than 30%, producing also additional thermal energy to be exploited as a co-generation. Different prototypes have been fabricated and the discussion on the technological key-points has been reported, relating them to the physical requirements necessary for an efficient conversion mechanism. The preliminary results obtained at a lab-level are here discussed, indicating low electrical power output, but also how to increase the performance by solving the identified issues.
