Weaning is a necessary husbandry practice in which nutritional, social, physical and psychological stressors are imposed on the beef calf causing alterations in behavioural and physiological responses. The present paper is a review of studies on the influence of weaning stress at housing on beef calves. To date, few studies have examined the effect of weaning on the extended physiological and immunological responses of beef calves and cows. Studies indicate that weaning in combination with immediate housing decreased total leukocyte numbers, reduced in vitro production of interferon-gamma and increased concentrations of acute phase proteins compared with deferring housing for 35 days post weaning. In cows, transitory neutrophilia (increase in neutrophil number) and lymphopenia (decrease in lymphocyte number), reduced interferon-γ production, and increased concentrations of acute phase proteins were evident post weaning, whereas post-housing, changes were less marked. Thus, there is a greater transitory reduction in immune function biomarkers in calves immediately post weaning. These immune biomarkers may be used in the future to help identify animals susceptible to weaning stress and that are more likely to succumb to respiratory infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIMS: The principle aim of this study was to examine the association between infection with Theileria orientalis Ikeda type and growth rates of suckled beef calves on four beef farms. In addition, associations between calf sex, sampling time, and individual farm and T. orientalis Ikeda type infection intensity and haematocrit (HCT) were investigated. METHODS: The study was a prospective longitudinal study in which 240 calves from four purposively selected beef farms in the North Island of New Zealand were blood sampled and weighed in late spring, mid-summer and early autumn. Two farms were from high-risk (A and B) and two from low-risk (C and D) tick areas. Blood samples were analysed to determine HCT, and the number of T. orientalis Ikeda type organisms/µL of blood (infection intensity) using a quantitative PCR assay. A calf was defined as infected if >415 organisms/µL were detected in a blood sample. Linear mixed models were used to examine associations between infection intensity, mean daily liveweight gain (MDG), HCT, calf sex and time of sampling on the four farms. RESULTS: On Farms A and B nearly all calves were infected at each sampling time, on Farm C <30% were infected at any sampling and on Farm D infection prevalence increased from 32 to 79% between late spring and early autumn. On Farms C and D, from mid-summer to early autumn, mean MDG was 0.127 (95% CI=0.072-0.183) kg/day less for infected than uninfected calves (p<0.001). On all farms MDG was negatively associated with infection intensity for mid-summer and early autumn sampling times (p=0.037). The relationship between time of sampling and infection intensity varied between farms (p<0.001), and between male and female calves (p=0.018). Females had a higher infection intensity than males at the mid-summer and early autumn samplings. The association between HCT and infection intensity varied with sampling time and farm (p=0.018). There was a strong negative association between infection intensity and HCT at the late spring sampling, but in mid-summer there was no association, and in early autumn only a weak association. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study has shown that beef farmers in the North Island of New Zealand should be concerned about the welfare effects and economic impacts of T. orientalis Ikeda type infection in suckled beef calves. Bovine papular stomatitis (BPS) generally is a mild viral disease caused by the Bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV) belonging to the genus Parapoxvirus (PPV). This study aimed to perform the first molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of BPSV in beef calves in Iran. Clinical examinations were carried out on four beef cattle herds in West Azerbaijan province, which had experienced outbreaks of papular lesions. Fifty swab samples were collected from the papular lesions on the muzzle, lips, and oral cavity of affected calves, and after viral DNA extraction, they were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The results of PCR confirmed the presence of BPSV in all calves with clinical symptoms. The partial B2L gene was sequenced based on nucleotides, and phylogenetic analysis was performed using MEGA 11.0.13. The analysis revealed that BPSV isolates from beef calves in Iran formed two clades. Clade 1 exhibited similarities to the isolates from Finland, Japan, and Georgia, while Clade 2 was similar to the Zambian isolates. These findings indicate the presence of genetic diversity and potential variability within the virus population. Further studies with larger sample sizes and diverse geographic regions will increase the resolution of the phylogenetic tree and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of how BPSV circulates in the country. • Molecular methods can be helpful in the differential diagnosis of mucosal diseases in cattle. • No mortality was seen in the BPSV-afflicted calves. • In this study, BPSV has been detected in beef calves using B2L gene amplification. • Phylogenetic analysis of the B2L gene indicates the presence of genetic diversity and potential variability within the virus population in Iran. The study objective was to determine if a combined weaning and transportation stress model affected performance, antibody, endocrine, or hematological responses to modified-live virus (MLV) or killed virus (KV) respiratory vaccination in beef steers. In total, 48 calves (Day 0 BW = 226 ± 6.2 kg) from a single origin were used in a 2 × 2 factorial to evaluate main effects of stress model, vaccine type, and their interaction, resulting in four treatments (n = 12/treatment) including non-stress control (C) with KV (CKV), C with MLV (CMLV), stress model implementation (S) with KV (SKV), and S with MLV (SMLV). The C calves were weaned at the origin ranch on Day −37 and transported 472 km to the study site on Day −21 to allow acclimation. The S calves were weaned on Day −3, transported 460 km to a research facility on Day −2, held overnight, and transported 164 km to the study site on Day −1 to mimic the beef cattle marketing process. Vaccines were administered on Day 0 and KV was revaccinated on Day 14. The animal was the experimental unit and dependent variables were analyzed using PROC MIXED with repeated measures (day). A stress model effect (p = 0.01) existed for DMI from Day 0 to Day 7 with greater DMI for C (6.19 vs. 4.64 kg/day) when compared to S. The MLV groups had reduced (p = 0.05) ADG from Day 0 to Day 56, compared to KV. There was a vaccine type × day (p < 0.01) interaction with increased (p ≤ 0.01) PI3V- and IBRV-specific antibody titers for KV on Day 21; conversely, MLV had increased (p ≤ 0.01) BVDV titers on Days 14, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56. Increased (p ≤ 0.05) BRSV titers were observed in a stress model × day (p < 0.01) interaction for S on Days 21, 28, 36, and 42; however, C exceeded S in BVDV-specific antibody concentration on Days 21, 28, and 49. A day effect (p < 0.01) was observed for serum haptoglobin with the greatest (p < 0.01) concentration on Day 3. Serum cortisol concentration was greater (p ≤ 0.04) for C vs. S on Days −2, 0, 1, 3, and 5. Total leukocytes were decreased for C vs. S on Days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, and 21 (p ≤ 0.02). A reduction (p ≤ 0.04) in total leukocytes was observed for MLV on Days 5, 7, and 14 vs. KV. Neutrophils and neutrophil:lymphocyte were markedly increased (p ≤ 0.01) for S on Day −2, whereas neutrophils were decreased (p ≤ 0.01) on Days 1 and 21 for S. Monocytes were decreased on Days 1, 5 and 7 for MLV (p ≤ 0.04) and Days −2 to 14 for S (p ≤ 0.03). Eosinophils were reduced (p = 0.007) for S vs. C on Day −2, yet a distinct rebound response (p = 0.03) was noted for S on Day 0. The results indicate that S and MLV vaccination more profoundly induced immunomodulation in beef calves.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single dose of subcutaneous (s.c.) meloxicam administered at the time of knife and band castration on inflammatory response and wound healing over 56-d post-castration. Seventytwo Angus crossbred calves (47.3 ± 6.70 kg of body weight [BW] and 7 to 8 d of age) were randomly assigned according to a 3 × 2 factorial design assessing castration method: sham (CT), band (BA), and knife (KN) castration, and pain mitigation: non-medicated (NM) and medicated calves (M) injected s.c. with meloxicam (0.5 mg/kg of BW). Calf BW, rectal temperature, swelling (“0”: no swelling; “4”: swelling needing intervention) and healing score (“1” to “5” with “5” being completely healed), scrotal circumference, and maximum scrotal temperature were measured on d −1, immediately before castration (d 0), and weekly thereafter over a 56-d period. Blood samples for haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid-A (SAA), and complete blood cell count were collected according to the same schedule. Hair samples were collected on d −1, 28, and 56 to determine cortisol concentrations. Standing and lying behaviors were measured using accelerometers that were placed on the calves on d −1 until d 35, and visual observations of behaviors related to pain were recorded once a week for 35 d. Knife-castrated calves achieved swelling scores of “3” and “2” between d 7 and 14, which was sooner (Z 0.10) were observed among treatments for hair cortisol on d −1 and 28, but on d 56, hair cortisol concentrations in BA–NM calves were greater (P > 0.05) than for CT-NM, BA-M, KN–NM, and KN–M, and tended to be greater (P = 0.08) than for CT–M calves. Lying duration tended (P = 0.10) to be greater and suckling behavior tended (P = 0.08) to be lower in NM than M calves. A single s.c. injection of meloxicam did not reduce long-term inflammatory responses or improve wound healing; however, it may be useful in reducing pain and stress in band castrated calves as evidenced by reduced hair cortisol concentrations up to 56 d post-castration. Fall calving (September to October) cows (n = 189 calvings in 5 replications; body weight [BW] = 626 ± 6 kg, body condition score [BCS] = 4.76 ± 0.06) grazing native dormant range were used to determine the effects of protein supplementation on performance and endocrine function of cows and calves. Cows were individually fed either a control (CON; 1.82 kg/d of 38% crude protein [CP]) or restricted (RES; 0.2 kg/d of 8% CP) protein supplement from mid-November to mid-March for 6 consecutive years. During each year, cows were reassigned dietary treatments according to calving date and BCS, and half of the CON and half of the RES cows remained on the same diets as the previous year and the other halves were assigned to the other diet. Statistical analyses were performed with the general linear model procedure utilizing a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement and a complete randomized design. Cows on CON diets lost less BW from November to January compared with RES cows (-25.9 ± 2.6 and -45.0 ± 2.6 kg, respectively; P < 0.001). Protein supplementation increased plasma concentrations of insulin of CON compared with RES cows during treatment (P < 0.05). Calf birth weight did not differ between prenatal supplemention of CON and RES (P = 0.87). A prenatal x postnatal effect was detected for BW of calves; prenatal RES and postnatal CON calves (RES-CON; 189.4 ± 4.2, P = 0.05) had greater 205-d adjusted weaning weights compared with prenatal RES and postnatal RES (RES-RES) and prenatal CON and postnatal RES (CON-RES) calves (163.0 ± 4.2 and 177.8 ± 4.2 kg, respectively). There was a prenatal x postnatal effect on gain of calves from January to weaning (P = 0.05); RES-CON gained more than RES-RES and CON-RES calves. Adjusted yearling 365-d BW was least (P = 0.02) for RES-RES calves. Prenatal protein supplementation of cows decreased (P = 0.03) final BW of calves at harvest (23 mo). Prenatal and postnatal supplementation of cows did not influence carcass characteristics of calves (P > 0.10). In conclusion, increasing protein supplementation of fall calving beef cows from November to March, during breeding and early pregnancy, reduced BW loss of cows, decreased the interval from calving to pregnancy, increased plasma concentrations of insulin in December, January, and March, and increased plasma insulin-like growth factor-I in December without alteration in pregnancy rate. In Western Canada, approximately half of the calves produced are castrated before 1 wk of age. Therefore, it is important to identify effective analgesic drugs to mitigate pain associated with castration and consequently improve animal welfare. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a single s.c. dose of meloxicam at mitigating pain associated with knife and band castration in 1-wk-old calves. Seventy-two Angus crossbred bull calves (47.3 ± 6.70 kg of body weight (BW), 1 wk old) were used in a 3 x 2 factorial design where main factors included castration method-sham (CT), band (BA) or knife (KN) castration- and medication-lactate ringer (NM) or 0.5 mg/kg BW of meloxicam (M). Measurements included different physiological and behavioral parameters. Samples were collected on day -1, immediately before castration (T0); and 60, 90, and 120 min and 1, 2, 3, and 7 d after castration except for visual analog scale (VAS) which was collected at the time of castration. The salivary cortisol concentrations were greater (P = 0.04) in KN and BA calves than CT calves 60 min after castration, while 90 min after castration BA had greater concentrations than CT calves. Substance P concentrations were greater (P = 0.04) in NM calves than M calves on d 3 and 7 after castration. The serum amyloid-A (SAA) concentrations were greater (P = 0.05) in KN calves than BA and CT calves on days 0, 2, and 3, while BA calves had greater SAA concentrations on day 7 than KN and CT calves. The visual analog scores were greater (P < 0.01) in KN calves than BA, and in BA compared to CT calves. The KN calves tail flicked more (P < 0.01) than BA and CT calves, and NM calves tail flicked more (P = 0.03) than M calves. No castration or medication effect (P > 0.10) was observed for stride length, walking, standing, lying ventral, eating, foot stamping, head turning, lying and standing percentage, performance, platelets, or body temperature. Overall, knife castrated calves exhibited a greater acute pain response than band castrated calves. Meloxicam was able to reduce substance P concentrations, white blood cell counts and number of tail flicks after castration, suggesting that the drug was able to mitigate acute pain to some extent. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of creep-feeding on feeding behavior of beef calves, during nursing phase. The experiment lasted 170 days; from December/2021 to May/2022, the calves were born in September/2021 and creep-feeding supplementation started from approximately 70 days of life until weaning. The feeding behavior was evaluated twice on d 70 and d 120 post creep-feeding). The experimental design used was a randomized block [blocked by body weight (BW) of calves]. The experimental units were the paddocks (8 units per treatment, ten replicates per paddock), totalling 156 pairs cow/calf (86 pairs of male calves and 70 pairs of female calves). Two paddocks per treatment and 8 pairs per paddock were sorted for behavior analysis, totalling 32 pairs cow/calf (16 pairs of male calves and 16 pairs of female calves). The treatments consisted of creep-feeding or not creepfeeding the calves: control treatment (CONT; mineral suppement ad libitum) and creep-feeding treatment (CREEP; energetic protein supplement; 5 g/kg of BW· animal-1·/day-1). There was mineral supplement ad libitum for all the dams. The pairs cow/calf were kept in an area composed of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu. and idleness, suckling, grazing and creep-feeding or mineral supplementation were evaluated. The data were analyzed using the SAS PROC MIXED. There was no difference in feeding behavior of calves at 70 days of creep-feeding for idleness (P = 0.80), grazing (P = 0.59) and suckling (P = 0.30; Figure 1). Creep-feeding calves spent 14 minutes longer on supplementation than non-creep-feeding calves (P < 0.01). At 120 days of creepfeeding (180 days of age), calves that received creep feeding supplementation spent less time grazing (difference of 67 min; P < 0.01), more time on supplementation (+28 min; P < 0.01) and idleness (+42 min; P = 0.05) and similar time on suckling (P = 0.76; Figure 2). There was no difference in any of the variables at different times (P >0.08) for the dams (Figure 3). Animals in creep-feeding spend less time grazing but suckling in a similar amount of time compared with those that consumed only mineral supplement, which corroborates with the results on milk yield of dams, which were similar for both treatments. The association of poor transfer of passive immunity (TPI) with negative health outcomes is extensively researched in dairy calves. However, few field studies have examined the effect of total and particularly pathogen-specific Immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations on pre-weaning health and growth of beef calves. Hence, the objective of this study was to determine the association of total and pathogen-specific IgG concentrations against selected pathogens associated with neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and the odds of pre-weaning treatments, mortality, and the growth of newborn beef calves. A total of 420 serum samples from 1- to 7-day old beef calves born on 6 farms in Alberta, Canada, were available for this observational study. Serum samples were analyzed by radial immunodiffusion for total IgG concentration and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for pathogen-specific IgG concentrations against Escherichia coli (E. coli) , bovine Rotavirus (BRoV), Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) , Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV), Parainfluenza Virus Type 3 (PI-3), Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV), and Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1 (BHV-1). Data about the individual dam- and calf-level risk factors, calf treatments, mortality, and birth and weaning weights were collected. Multivariable multilevel logistic and linear regression models were built to evaluate the association of total and pathogen-specific IgG concentrations with the odds of mortality and average daily gain (ADG), respectively, while their association with the odds of pre-weaning treatment was established by univariable logistic regression analysis. The odds of calves with IgG concentrations < 10 g/L of getting treated (OR 7.9, 95 % CI 2.7–23.7) and dying (OR: 18.5, 95 % CI: 3.7–93.4) were higher than for their counterparts (P < 0.0001). Calves with IgG concentrations < 24 g/L also had higher odds of dying (OR: 10.1, 95 % CI: 2.6–40.2) and had lower ADG (−0.09 kg, SE: 0.03, P < 0.002) than calves with IgG concentrations ≥ 24 g/L. Higher BVDV-specific IgG concentration was protective against mortality (OR: 0.97, 95 % CI: 0.96–0.99, P < 0.001). This study highlights the negative association of inadequate TPI with health and growth of beef calves and thus, the need to refine protocols for dam vaccination and colostrum intervention in cow-calf operations to meet these higher IgG targets. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of Burdizzo castration and abrupt weaning on the behaviour, blood traits and performance of beef calves when weaning was conducted concurrently or consecutively to castration. In total, 64 male beef calves aged between 6 and 7 months were assigned to a 2×2 factorial design with the following treatment groups (n=16 animals per treatment): (1) castrated and concurrently weaned in week 0 (CAS-WEA); (2) castrated in week 0 and weaned in week 4 (CAS-CON); (3) bulls weaned in week 0 (BUL-WEA); and (4) bulls weaned in week 4 (BUL-CON). The behaviour of the calves was observed for 3 days following weaning. Blood was collected weekly from weeks 0 to 5 and analysed for the acute-phase protein haptoglobin, and neutrophil and lymphocyte percentages. BW was recorded weekly from weeks 0 to 7. Animals were slaughtered at 17 months and weight, dressing percentage and carcass classifications were recorded. On day 1 after weaning, the number of vocalizations (calls/10 min) was higher in BUL-WEA (7.2) and CAS-WEA (5.4) than in calves of CAS-CON (2.8) and BUL-CON (2.9) groups (P0.05). WEA groups showed an increased average daily gain (ADG) during weeks 0 to 3 and a reduced ADG during 4 to 7 weeks in comparison with CON animals. At slaughter, bulls were about 80 kg heavier than castrates and had a superior dressing percentage and carcass classification (P>0.05). In conclusion, weaning had a greater effect on the number of vocalizations, standing/walking and lying behaviour and ADG compared with Burdizzo castration. In comparison with undertaking the procedures separately, concurrent castration and weaning neither affected behaviour and haematological parameters nor impaired performance. There was no evidence that the concurrent application of both treatments markedly increased the stress response compared with their application at intervals of a few weeks.

This experiment evaluated the effects of multiple bovine appeasing substance administration during a 42-day preconditioning program followed by feedlot receiving period on productivity, health, and physiological variables of feeder cattle. Ninety recently weaned calves were obtained from Red Bluff Ranch (Norris, MT). All calves were weaned and weighed (prior to transport). Calves were loaded into a livestock trailer, transported for 70 km, and unloaded at the Bozeman Agricultural Research and Teaching Farm for a 42-day preconditioning program. Upon arrival, calf body weight was recorded, and both pre- and post-transport body weight were averaged and used as calf weaning initial body weight. Calves were sorted by body weight, sex, and age, and assigned to receive 1) multiple administration of bovine appeasing substance at weaning (d0), d 14, 28, and before transport and feedlot entry (d 42; BAS; RSEA Group, Quartier Salignan, France), or 2) placebo (diethylene glycol monoethyl ether; CON). Treatments (5 mL) were applied topically to the nuchal skin area of each animal every 14 d during the preconditioning period. Calves within treatment groups were ranked by initial BW, sex, and age, and allocated to 1 of 18 drylot pens. On day 42, calves were combined within treatment group, loaded into 2 different single double-deck commercial livestock trailers, and transported for 1000 km (approximately 16 h). Upon arrival (day 43), calves were unloaded at the same feedyard and with the same pen distribution used prior to transport and fed ad libitum a TMR diet. Blood samples were collected on day 0 (weaning), 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 42 (prior transport), 43 (feedlot arrival), 46, 50, 57, 64 and 90. Average daily gain and final BW did not differ (P > 0.52) between BAS and CON calves in both the preconditioning and receiving phases. No treatment effects were also detected (P > 0.44) for daily TMR intake in any of the phases. Overall feed efficiency did not differ between BAS and CON calves (P > 0.54). No treatment effects were detected (P = 0.98) for plasma concentrations of cortisol. A treatment × day interaction was detected (P < 0.001) for plasma haptoglobin concentrations, which was greater (P < 0.01) in CON on day 3 and 7 vs. BAS calves. Therefore, multiple applications of BAS mitigated an acute-phase response associated with accumulative stress caused by weaning, transport, and vaccination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND Compared with weaned calves, nursed calves benefit from access to milk as nutrient-dense feed and mentoring by their dams. Both may be decisive for growth under difficult conditions such as grazing on alpine pastures, where experience could play an essential role. These factors were investigated separately by comparing nursed calves with calves weaned at 3 months of age and grazing with or without a mentor cow ( n = 8 calves). RESULTS Weaned calves with mentor cows spent less time lying and walked more than nursed calves. Irrespective of whether they had a mentor cow or not, the weaned calves grew slower than the nursed calves (357, 428 and 1324 g day−1 respectively). This also adversely affected slaughter weight, dressing percentage, conformation and fat cover at slaughter. In general, mentoring had no effect. Meat quality did not differ whether weaned calves were mentored or not. Nursed calves were superior in intramuscular fat content, tenderness and water-holding capacity. CONCLUSION The availability of milk appeared to be much more important to the calves under demanding grazing conditions than did mentoring. Crossbred calves (n = 30; age = 95 ± 1.7 d; BW = 179 ± 18 kg) were fed 1 of 5 growing diets: 1) corn-based control, 2) low-fat, low-protein coproduct blend, 3) high-fat, low-protein coproduct blend, 4) low-fat, high-protein coproduct blend, and 5) high-fat, high-protein coproduct blend for 112 d (growing phase) followed by a common corn-based finishing diet (additional 112 d; finishing phase). Calves were biopsied at 0, 112, and 224 d for transcriptional analysis via real-time quantitative PCR of 14 genes associated with adipogenesis and lipogenesis within the muscle. Serum was collected at d 0, 112, and 224 and analyzed for leptin, IGF-1, and GH concentration. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedures of SAS (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC) to ascertain the effects of 2 protein levels, 2 fat levels, time, and any interactions. Increased protein and decreased fat in the growing diet resulted in a carryover effect that increased (P < 0.01) gene expression of PPARγ, insulin-induced gene 1, thyroid hormone responsive SPOT14 protein, ATP citrate lyase, adiponectin, diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase homologue 2, fatty acid binding protein 4, fatty acid synthase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1, and stearoyl-CoA desaturase as well as serum leptin concentrations between d 112 and 224. Expression of sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 was increased (P < 0.01) at d 112 in steers fed high-protein, high-fat diets compared to those fed high-protein, low-fat diets. A fat × day interaction (P < 0.01) occurred for the expression of adiponectin receptor 2 and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha, resulting in a carryover effect wherein low-fat diets fed during the growing phase increased expression of both genes at the end of the finishing phase (d 224). After slaughter, cattle fed the control during the growing phase tended (P = 0.09) to have greater marbling scores, whereas other carcass parameters were not different (P ≥ 0.13). These data indicate that feeding differing levels of dietary fat and protein during the growing phase does affect i.m. adipogenesis at the transcriptional level, but differences in gene expression were not sufficient to affect carcass quality among cattle fed coproducts. Marketing is a stressful process for beef calves, because they are removed from their environment, often weaned just before loading, loaded, transported, and unloaded. It also involves extended periods without food and water and mixing with unfamiliar animals in an unknown environment. Some studies have shown that calves sold through markets are exposed to extended fasting periods even when they undergo only short transportation times. The aim of this controlled study was to determine the consequences for beef calves of a short transportation time followed by a prolonged time without food and water on their tympanic temperature (TT), maximum eye temperature (MET), blood variables related to stress, and live weight. Ten calves were transported for 3 h and then kept in an outdoor pen for 21 h, completing a 24 h fasting period. Sampling took place before loading, after transport and unloading, and then after completing 24 h without food and water. TT, MET, blood glucose, and creatine kinase (CK) increased significantly after transportation. Live weight decreased across sample times (mean of 10 kg per calf after 24 h of fasting), which was consistent with the higher concentration of β-HB found after fasting. Further studies to measure the actual consequences of true, commercial marketing on calf welfare and productivity are needed.

Em decorrência da elevada ocorrência (18%) de bezerros Guzerá que não mamaram por conta própria em suas mães (falha na primeira mamada), foram avaliados os fatores associados a estas falhas, sua influência na mortalidade e parâmetros genéticos para falha na primeira mamada (FPM). Dos 1.527 bezerros Guzerá nascidos de 1992 a 2004, 279 apresentaram FPM. Os efeitos fixos foram estudados utilizando o procedimento GENMOD-SAS com função de ligação probit. Parâmetros genéticos para FPM foram estimados por máxima verossimilhança restrita aproximada, ajustando modelo animal que incluiu efeitos genéticos diretos e maternos e de ambiente permanente da vaca. Verificou-se que os principais fatores predisponentes à FPM foram vacas com problema de úbere e tetos e bezerros pesando menos de 25 kg ao nascimento. FPM influenciou a mortalidade, com maior chance de óbitos para bezerros que falharam em comparação aos que mamaram naturalmente. A estimativa de herdabilidade do efeito materno foi baixa (0,08) e a referente ao efeito direto, nula. A estimativa de repetibilidade também foi baixa (0,17). Devido ao impacto de FPM na mortalidade de bezerros, sugere-se que a avaliação da conformação do aparelho mamário seja utilizada como um indicador para minimizar o problema. Entretanto, a baixa magnitude da estimativa de herdabilidade indica que progresso genético mediante seleção contra FPM poderia ser obtido somente a longo prazo.This study aimed to evaluate the effects related to the high occurrence (18%) of Guzerá newborn calves that failed to suckle (FS) after birth. Data from 1527 births recorded from 1992 to 2004 were analyzed by a fixed effects model using the probit linking function with the GENMOD procedure of SAS®. An animal model including direct and maternal additive genetic and cow permanent environment effects was also used to estimate genetic parameters for FS by quasi-restricted maximum likelihood. Cows with udder and teat problems and calves weighting less than 25 kg at birth were the major effects associated to the occurrence of FS in newborn calves which were more susceptible to mortality than those that successfully suckled. Maternal and direct effects heritability estimates for FS were respectively 0.08 and null. The repeatability estimate for FS was 0.17. The evaluation of the conformation of the cow mammary system may be used as an indicator to minimize the occurrence of FS. Genetic progress by selection for reducing FS in Guzerá newborn calves may be expected only in the long term.

A diarréia é considerada uma das principais causas de morbidade e mortalidade de bezerros neonatos. Foram colhidas 100 amostras fecais diarréicas e 30 amostras não diarréicas (grupo controle), de bezerros Nelore com até nove semanas de idade com o objetivo de detectar os enteropatógenos Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, rotavírus, coronavírus, Cryptosporidium spp. e ovos de helmintos. Enteropatógenos foram detectados em 79,0% das amostras diarréicas e em 70,0% das amostras não-diarréicas. No grupo de bezerros com diarréia, E. coli (69,0%) foi o agente mais freqüentemente isolado, seguido de Cryptosporidium spp. (30,0%), coronavírus (16,0%) e rotavírus (11,0%). No grupo controle, E. coli, Cryptosporidium spp. e coronavírus foram detectados, respectivamente, em 66,7%, 10,0% e 3,3% das amostras. Salmonella spp. e ovos de estrongilídeos não foram encontrados nos dois grupos avaliados. A fímbria K99 foi identificada exclusivamente nas linhagens de E. coli isoladas de bezerros com diarréia (5,8%). Entre os antimicrobianos avaliados "in vitro" a enrofloxacina, a norfloxacina e a gentamicina foram os mais efetivos. O peso dos bezerros aos 210 dias de idade não apresentou diferença significativa entre os animais com e sem diarréia.Diarrhea is considered as one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates calves. Fecal samples from 100 diarrheic and 30 non-diarrheic (control group) Nelore calves less than 9 weeks old were collected for Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, rotavirus, coronavirus, Cryptosporidium spp., and for helminth eggs investigation. Enteropathogens were detected in 79.0% diarrheic samples and 70.0% non-diarrheic samples. Among diarrheic calves, Escherichia coli (69.0%) was the most common agent found, following by Cryptosporidium spp. (30.0%), coronavirus (16.0%), and rotavirus (11.0%). In the control group, E. coli, Cryptosporidium spp. and coronavirus were detected in 66.7%, 10.0% and 3.3% of the samples, respectively. Enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and gentamicin were the most effective among the antimicrobials tested. The weight of 210-day-old calves did not show statistic differences between diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves.

Forty newly weaned beef calves (260 ± 32.6 kg) were transported 15 h in a livestock trailer (7.3 by 2.1 m) on 2 separate hauls 1 wk apart (20 calves/ haul) to evaluate the effect of rest stop duration on indicators of calf welfare. Immediately following the 15-h journey, 15 calves/haul were randomly unloaded at a feedlot and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 rest stop treatments; calves without resting time (5 calves/haul) remained on the trailer and were used as the control group. Treatments included 0- (Control [CON]), 5- (RS5), 10- (RS10), or 15-h (RS15) rest periods in pens containing ad libitum access to water and long-stem hay. Following each rest period, calves were reloaded onto the same trailer and taken on another 5-h journey, before they were unloaded at the same feedlot, for a total transport event lasting 20 h. Control calves did not have access to feed or water until the end of the 20-h transit event. Behavioral measurements included bunk attendance (min/d) and standing and lying duration (min/d) recorded for 5 h after the 20-h transport event. Physiological measurements included saliva and hair cortisol, complete blood cell count, serum NEFA, haptoglobin, and substance P concentrations. All physiological measurements as well as BW were taken immediately prior to initial loading, at arrival at the feedlot after the 20-h event, and 48 h after the transport to the same feedlot. Hair cortisol was collected prior to the initial loading and 25 d after transportation. No differences (P = 0.78) in BW loss were observed among treatments after transportation. Standing time was greater (P < 0.001) in CON calves compared with RS5, RS10, and RS15 calves. Salivary cortisol was greater (P < 0.01) in CON and RS15 calves than in RS5 and RS10 calves at the end of the 20-h journey. Serum NEFA concentration was greater (P = 0.03) in RS5 and RS10 calves at arrival compared with CON and RS15 calves, but those differences were no longer observed (P = 0.49) 48 h after transportation. Concentration of substance P did not differ (P = 0.18) between treatments, and haptoglobin concentration tended to be greater (P = 0.07) in CON calves compared with the other treatments 48 h after arrival. Hair cortisol tended (P = 0.10) to be lower in RS5 calves compared with the other treatments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of beef calves' supplementation in creep feeding systems on milk yield, body weight (BW), and body condition score (BCS) of their dams on tropical pastures using a meta-analytical approach. The database was obtained from 11 experiments conducted between 2009 and 2014 in Brazil, totaling 485 observations (cows). The database consisted of 273 Nellore and 212 crossbred (7/8 Nellore × 1/8 Holstein) cows. All experiments were carried out in the suckling phase (from 3 to 8 months of age of calves) during the transition phase between rainy and dry seasons from February to June of different years. The data were analyzed by a meta-analytical approach using mixed models and taking into account random variation among experiments. Calves' supplementation ( P ≥ 0.59) and the calves' sex ( P ≥ 0.48) did not affect milk yield of cows. The average fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield was 6.71 and 6.83 kg/day for cows that had their calves supplemented and not supplemented, respectively. Differences were observed ( P < 0.0001) for milk yield due to the genetic group where crossbred cows presented greater FCM yield (7.37 kg/day) compared with Nellore cows (6.17 kg/day). There was no effect of the calves' supplementation on BW change ( P ≥ 0.11) and BCS change ( P ≥ 0.23) of the cows. Therefore, it is concluded that supplementation of beef calves using creep feeding systems in tropical pastures does not affect milk yield, body weight, or body condition of their dams. The present study describes the clinical, serological and bacteriolological findings in calves from two beef herds experiencing outbreaks of pneumonia. The clinical signs were nasal discharge, cough, pyrexia and increased respiratory rates. The morbidity and mortality rates over a month period were 40.72% and 15.63% respectively. Laboratory investigations revealed that bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) was involved in and probably initiated both outbreaks as indicated by a significant increase in antibody titers against BVDV in sera of convalescent calves (paired serum samples). No antibodies bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and parainfluenza-3 (BPIV-3) viruses were detected in both acute and convalescent sera. Mycoplasma bovis was concurrently demonstrated in lungs of affected calves as it was isolated from 13 (81.25%) of examined lungs suggesting that there may be a synergism between bovine viral diarrhea virus and Mycoplasma bovis in the pathogenesis of pneumonia. A total of 15 (68.18%) isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica, 5 (22.73%) Pasteurella multocida, 1 (4.54%) Pseudomonase aerugenosa, 3 (13.64%) Staphylococcus aureus, 3 (13.64%) Actinomycis pyogenes, 1 (4.54%) Klebsiella pneumonae, 1 (4.54%) Streptococcus pneumonae, 2 (9.09%) E. coli and 2 (9.09%) Aspergellus fumigatus were recovered from lungs of calves suffering from pneumonia.

Foi avaliado o efeito da suplementação a pasto, com concentrados fornecidos durante o ano (períodos de seca e águas), sobre o desenvolvimento ponderal de bezerras desmamadas. Foram utilizadas 36 bezerras da raça Santa Gertrudis, com média inicial de idade de 290 dias, média de peso vivo de 194 kg, mantidas em pasto de Brachiaria decumbens, distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dois tratamentos e 18 repetições. Foi oferecida mistura mineral o ano todo, ou suplemento com maior nível de proteína degradável na seca, e não-degradável nas águas. Os resultados obtidos para a média diária de ganho de peso vivo indicaram uma diferença significativa entre os tratamentos. O ganho de peso vivo, durante o ano, para o lote testemunha, foi de 0,504 kg animal-1 dia-1 e, para o lote suplementado foi de 0,561 kg. No período de seca, o ganho de peso vivo foi significativamente maior para os animais suplementados e, no período das águas não ocorreu diferença. A suplementação a pasto não apresentou vantagens bioeconômicas para se recomendar o seu uso. Nos dois tratamentos as bezerras alcançaram média de peso limite, para primeira cobertura, com idade próxima a 14 meses.The concentrate supplementation effect upon ponderal performance of calves during the year (dry and wet seasons) was evaluated. Thirty-six Santa Gertrudis calves averaging 194 kg of live weight, with 290 days of age, grazing Brachiaria decumbens pasture, were used in a complete randomized design. The following supplements have been added ad libitum, fed during the experimental period: mineral mix, supplement based on degradable protein, during dry season, and supplement based on non-degradable protein (escape protein), during wet season. Results on average daily gain demonstrated a significant difference between treatments. The average daily gains were 0.504 and 0.561 kg animal-1 day-1 for the non-supplemented group (control group, fed mineral mix only), and supplemented group, respectively. During dry season, supplemented calves showed significantly higher average daily gain, and during wet season there was no difference. Pasture supplementation did not present bioeconomic advantage, then its use could not be recommended. In both treatments, calves reached the average weight limit, for first mating, at nearly 14 months of age.

Os efeitos no desenvolvimento de bezerros submetidos a: a) três tratamentos, consitindo de cargas animais pós-parto (CA) de 240 kg de peso vivo (PV)/ha (tratamento 1, T1), de 320 kg de PV/ha (T2), ambas em campo nativo, e de 400 kg de PV/ha em pastagem melhorada de azevém (Lolium multiflorum L.) por 80 dias pós-parto e, posteriormente, em CA igual à do T2 em campo nativo (T3); b) duas idades de desmame, consistindo de desmame aos 100 (DP) ou 180 (DC) dias de idade, foram avaliados utilizando 92 bezerros filhos de vacas primíparas Hereford e Braford. O sexo dos bezerros influenciou significativamente o peso ao nascer, não sendo observado efeito da raça da vaca. Os tratamentos e a raça da vaca não influenciaram o ganho médio diário (GMD) dos bezerros do nascimento ao desmame precoce. Bezerros filhos de vacas Braford tiveram maiores pesos no DP (PDP) que os filhos de vacas Hereford, enquanto os tratamentos não influenciaram o PDP. Os bezerros filhos de vacas Braford no T2 tiveram GMD até os 180 dias (GMD180) e PV aos 180 dias (PAJ180) superiores aos bezerros filhos de vacas Braford no T1 e Hereford no T2. Os bezerros do DP tiveram GMD180 e PAJ180 significativamente inferiores aos bezerros do DC. Entretanto, não se verificaram efeitos de tratamentos e idade de desmame sobre o GMD até os 365 dias e o peso ajustado aos 365 dias de idade. Portanto, os três manejos pós-parto das vacas e as duas idades de desmame dos bezerros avaliados não influenciaram o desenvolvimento dos bezerros a um ano de idade.The effects on the performance of calves submitted to: a) three treatments, consisted of post-partum stocking rates (CA) of 240 kg of live weight (LW)/ha (treatment 1, T1), of 320 kg of LW/ha (T2), both on natural pastures, and of 400 kg of LW/ha on improved pasture of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) during the first 80 days post-partum, and after on natural pasture at the same stocking rate as T2 afterwards (T3); b) two weaning ages, consisted of weaning at 100 (EW) and at 180 (CW) days of age, were evaluated using 92 beef calves from Hereford and Braford primiparous cows. The sex of the calves affected significantly the birth weight, and no effect was observed for the breed of cow. The treatments and breed of cow did not affect the average daily gain (ADG) of the calves from birth to early weaning (GEW). Calves born from Braford cows had higher LW at EW (WEW) than calves born from Hereford cows, while the WEW was not affected by the treatments. Calves born from Braford cows on T2 had ADG up to 180 days (ADG180) and LW at 180 days (LW180) greater than calves born from Braford cows on T1 and Hereford cows on T2. Calves from CW had greater LW180 and ADG180 than calves from EW. However, treatments and weaning ages did not affect the LW at 365 days and the ADG up to 365 days of age. The three cows post-partum management schemes and the two calves weaning ages evaluated did not affect the calves performance up to one year of age.

The effects of nose flap devices in calves before dam separation on cow BCS, pre- and postseparation calf performance, and humoral immune response were compared with traditional weaning. Primiparous and multiparous Angus and Hereford cows (n = 113) and their Angus, Hereford, and Angus × Hereford calves (179.4 ± 3.92 kg and 161 ± 22.7 d of age) were used. Cow-calf pairs were allocated to 1 of 2 treatments in a completely randomized design: 1) nose flap for 21 d before separation from the dam (NF) or 2) no nose flap for 21 d before separation from the dam (CON). Calves were separated from dams on d 0, and calves were placed in group feed-yard pens for 28 d. A subset (n = 75) of weaned calves were placed into 1 of 8 pens to evaluate DMI. Cow BCS was measured on d -21 and 56, and calves were given modified live vaccinations (d -21 and 1), challenged with ovalbumin (OVA; d 1), and weighed (d -21, 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28). In addition, blood samples were collected (d -21, 1, 14, and 28) to measure primary humoral immune response. Control calves tended to have greater BW on d 14 (P = 0.09) and 21 (P = 0.07) than NF calves, and CON calves had greater (P < 0.05) ADG from d -21 to 1 vs. NF calves. Treatments did not differ (P = 0.27) for postweaning DMI, G:F, or morbidity. Serum neutralization tests for bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 (BVDV-1) and bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) were used to measure humoral response to a viral vaccination. Serum antibody titers to BVDV-1 for CON calves tended (P = 0.08) to be greater on d 1 and were greater (P < 0.05) by d 28 vs. NF calves. By d 28, a greater percentage (P < 0.05) of CON calves seroconverted for BVDV-1 than NF calves (82.1 vs. 66.7%, respectively). Serum antibody titers for BHV-1 were greater (P < 0.05) on d 1 and 28 for CON vs. NF calves. Humoral immune response to OVA during the 28-d postseparation period from the dam was evaluated in a subset (n = 57) of calves. There was no difference (P = 0.92) in OVA-specific IgG between treatments on d 14 or 28 (P = 0.76); however, OVA-specific IgM was greater (P < 0.05) in CON vs. NF calves on d 28. Results indicate that nose flap devices did not influence feed intake, feed efficiency, or morbidity during the initial postseparation period from the dam. However, preweaning ADG, serum BVDV-1 and BHV-1 titers, and humoral immune response to OVA were decreased in calves that received the nose flap treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Growth implant efficacy may be affected when administered to nutritionally stressed calves, whereas the procedure may alter health or the humoral immune response to respiratory vaccination. The study objective was to determine the effect of different administration times (d 0, 14, or 28) of a growth implant containing 200 mg progesterone and 20 mg estradiol benzoate on health, performance, and metabolic and immunologic variables in high-risk, newly received beef calves used in a 120-d receiving/grazing stocker system. Crossbred bull and steer calves (n = 203) were weighed (initial BW = 203 ± 2.7 kg), stratified by castrate status on arrival, and randomly assigned to experimental treatments consisting of 1) negative control (no growth implant administered), 2) growth implant administered on d 0, 3) growth implant administered on d 14, and 4) growth implant administered on d 28. There were no differences (P = 0.16) in BW or ADG during the 42-d receiving period. However, ADG during the subsequent grazing period and overall was greater (P = 0.01) for implanted calves versus the negative control. Growth implant timing did not affect the rate of clinical bovine respiratory disease morbidity (P = 0.52; 94% morbidity overall) or bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1a antibody titer concentration (P = 0.61). Indicative of an overall negative energy balance on arrival, NEFA decreased sharply subsequent to d 0 (day effect, P < 0.001), but was not affected (P = 0.47) by the timing of growth implantation. Blood urea N concentrations increased transiently (day effect, P < 0.001); however, no treatment effect was observed (P = 0.72). Therefore, under conditions of this study, the timing of growth implant administration did not affect growth implant efficacy, health, or metabolic or immunologic variables in newly received, high-risk beef stocker calves. Overall, our observations suggest that there is not a clear benefit to delaying growth implantation and that a growth implant does not affect health or vaccine response in newly received beef calves. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of fat concentration from corn distillers' solubles (CDS), fed during the growing phase, on DMI, gain, carcass traits, digestibility, ruminal metabolism, and methane emissions of steers. In Exp. 1, 40 steers (age = 136 ± 20 d; BW = 185 ± 11 kg) were randomly allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments: 1) a cornbased growing diet (CNT), 2) 0% CDS, 3) 10% CDS, 4) 19% CDS, or 5) 27% CDS. Diets 2 through 5 included coproducts (corn gluten feed and soybean hulls) and were formulated to achieve fat concentrations of 3, 5, 7, and 9%, respectively. Diets were fed once daily for 106 d (growing phase). All steers were fed a corn-based diet from d 107 to 196. Contrasts were used to examine 1) the difference between CNT and 10% CDS and 2) linear and quadratic effects of CDS inclusion. During the growing phase, steers fed CNT had increased (P < 0.01) ADG and G:F compared with steers fed 10% CDS. Increasing CDS inclusion increased (linear, P = 0.02) ADG and G:F. Overall, steers fed CNT had increased (P < 0.01) ADG compared with steers fed 10% CDS, but increasing CDS inclusion had no effect (P = 0.19) on overall ADG. Overall DMI and G:F were not different (P = 0.16) in any contrast. There was a trend (Linear; P = 0.08) for ultrasound marbling at d 196 to increase as CDS inclusion increased; however, there were no effects (P = 0.20) of treatment on carcass marbling or quality grade. In Exp. 2, 5 steers (BW = 335 ± 56 kg) were fed Exp. 1 diets for ad libitum intakes in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. Apparent DM digestibility increased (linear, P = 0.02) with increasing dietary CDS inclusion. Steers fed CNT had greater (P = 0.01) DM digestibility than those fed 10% CDS. Fat digestibility increased (linear, P < 0.01) in steers with increasing CDS, but NDF and ADF digestibility were not affected (P = 0.17) by treatment. Similarly, ruminal pH and VFA concentrations were not affected (P = 0.13). Also, there was no difference (P = 0.37) in ruminal methane emissions (g/h). In conclusion, feeding corn during the growing phase increased overall ADG compared with 10% CDS coproduct-based diet but did not affect carcass traits or methane production. Increasing dietary fat inclusion from CDS in coproductbased diets linearly increased DM and fat digestibility and predicted marbling scores via ultrasound but did not affect marbling at slaughter, NDF digestibility, propionate, or methane production. A study was carried out to investigate how common Cryptosporidium infections are in beef calves in Swedish suckler herds and to explore which species and subtypes that occur. We further aimed at identifying factors associated with shedding of Cryptosporidium oocysts in this type of calf management. The study was conducted in two regions in Sweden and included 30 herds. Faecal samples were collected from calves younger than 3 months. A brief clinical examination was done and a questionnaire was used to collect data on management routines. Faeces were cleaned and concentrated and oocysts identified by epifuorescence microscopy. Cryptosporidium positive samples were analyzed at the 18S rRNA and GP60 genes to determine species and Cryptosporidium parvum subtype, respectively. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with infection. Oocysts were detected in 122 (36·7%) calves from 29 (97%) herds, at 400 to 2·4 × 107 OPG. The youngest positive calves were only 1 and 2 days old. There was no association between age and Cryptosporidium infection. Cryptosporidium bovis, Cryptosporidium ryanae, C. parvum and Cryptosporidium ubiquitum were identified, with C. bovis being the major species. Two C. parvum subtypes, IIaA16G1R1 and IIdA27G1 were identified. Routines for cleaning calf pens and number of cows in calving pens were associated with infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to compare conventional and organic diets in beef production. Thirty-two dairy beef calves were used in 4 treatments: organic diet with three levels of forage [70% of organic diet with high amount of forage (ORH), 55% of organic diet with medium amount of forage (ORM), 38% of organic diet with low amount of forage (ORL)] and conventional diet (CON). The dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion rate (FCR) of calves were measured. The calves were then slaughtered at the end of the study. DMI was significantly differed among groups after the 5th period. However, FCR and ADG were significantly differed among the treatments in several periods. Carcass physical size, lipid and cholesterol were lower in organic diets compared to the CON. Significant increases were observed in organic meat for C18:2, C18:3 fatty acids, heminic iron, α-tocopherol and β-carotene. The effects of weaning on beef calves of different ages were investigated. Forty male and 40 female calves were either weaned at 6 ( W6, n = 40) or 8 ( W8, n = 40) months of age. The vocalization activity and behaviors (feeding, lying and standing/walking) were observed during the first 3 days following weaning. Body weight was recorded at 6 and 8 months and 2 weeks following weaning. W6 animals vocalized more often than W8 calves and females more than males on day 1 ( P < 0.05). The vocalization activity decreased at a higher rate in W8 than in W6 from days 1 to 3. On day 2, W6 calves spent less time lying and more standing/walking than W8 calves ( P < 0.05). The behaviors did not differ between males and females. The average daily gain after weaning did not differ between weaning ages ( P > 0.05), but W8 calves gained more from 6 to 8 months of age. In conclusion, weaning distress was more pronounced in W6 than in W8 calves. W8 calves also had a superior growth performance during 6 to 8 months of age. Cereal rye has been utilized in multiple ways within cropping systems in the northern Great Plains. Rye has traditionally not been utilized as a suitable grain for growing and finishing calves. Previously, recommendations have limited the use of rye due to the negative effects of ergot ingestion. Recent hybrid rye germplasms have shown increased yields with decreased incidence of ergot. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of ground hybrid rye inclusion rate on dry matter intake (DMI), growth performance, and feed efficiency in backgrounding beef steers. Two hundred crossbred steers were shipped to the Carrington Research Extension Center near Carrington, ND, stratified by weight, and assigned to one of twenty pens (n = 10 steers/pen). Four treatments were used in a completely randomized block design to evaluate animal performance during backgrounding when fed partial or complete replacement of corn with rye as the concentrate source. Ground hybrid rye was substituted for DRC as follows: a basal diet formulated with 20% DRC: 0% ground hybrid rye (CON), 13.5% DRC: 6.5% ground hybrid rye (RYE1), 6.5% DRC: 13.5% ground hybrid rye (RYE2), or 0% DRC:20% ground hybrid rye (RYE3) on a dry matter basis. Steers were fed for a total of 56 days beginning Oct. 25, 2021. Interim weights were taken on Nov. 22, 2021, and final weights were taken Dec. 20, 2021. At the conclusion of the feeding period, cattle were weighed on two consecutive days to determine final body weight. Performance data including animal live weights, ADG, DMI and G:F ratio were calculated. The use of rye within the diet did not influence steer weight throughout the study (P = 0.11). No differences in ADG were detected throughout the study (P = 0.68). Steers fed diets containing hybrid rye had higher DMI (P = 0.03) and higher F:G (P = 0.04) during the first month of the study. Increased DMI during the initial month of backgrounding may promote improved intake and growth. Results from the study suggest that steers fed rye as a partial or sole grain in a high forage backgrounding diet weighed similar to calves fed corn as the sole concentrate source. Weaning is a stressful event often associated with changes in physiological characteristics, increased restlessness, reduced feed intake, and poor performance. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of melatonin on behavioral and physiological responses of weaned beef calves. Angus beef calves (n=36) at 7-mo of age were stratified by dam parity, body weight, calf sex and randomly allocated to receive either 24mg melatonin implants (MEL) or physiological saline (CON). A subset of calves were fitted with accelerometers on the hind leg to monitor activity levels for 7 days after weaning. Blood samples, rectal temperature, chute score and body weight measurements were collected on d 0, 7 and 14 after weaning. Activity of MEL calves was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than CON. The MEL calves had lower (P < 0.05) chute score on d 7 and 14 compared to CON. There was no marked effect of melatonin on rectal temperature and hematological parameters, however, platelet showed significant (P < 0.05) difference with MEL recording higher values compared to CON. Average daily gain (ADG) was 1.67 and 2.35kg/d in CON and MEL, respectively. We concluded that although no differences in ADG, hemogram, and rectal temperature were observed, melatonin treated calves had reduced behavioral stress response associated with weaning. The aim of the current study was to assess the diagnostic characteristics of radial immunodiffusion (RID), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and digital brix refractometry (Bx) for the diagnosis of failure of passive transfer (FPT) of immunity in neonatal Belgian Blue beef calves in the absence of a gold standard using a Bayesian latent class model. Belgian blue beef calves (n = 202) from a large farm in the south of Belgium were blood-sampled at 48–72 h of age and tested for FPT. The true prevalence of FPT in this population of calves was 34.5 % (95 % BCI: 26.1–44.3) using a FPT cut-off point of 10 g IgG/L. This true prevalence increased to 66.3 (95 % BCI: 56.9–74.8) and 88.9 % (95 % BCI: 83.1–93.2) at FPT cut-off points of respectively 18 and 25 g IgG/L serum. The Bland-Altman plot comparing the RID and CE methods, revealed that the serum IgG concentrations obtained by RID were on average 2.25 (95 % CI 1.62–2.88) g/L higher than those measured by CE. Optimal cut-off values for CE, corresponding to the FPT values as measured by RID of 10, 18, and 25 g IgG/L serum, were respectively 10, 15, and 20 g IgG/L. The overall diagnostic accuracy of the three diagnostic tests was comparable at the FPT cut-off point of 10 g IgG/L serum (i.e. 85 %). At higher cut-off points for FPT, the RID and CE assays presumably performed better that the Bx method. In conclusion, we demonstrated that: (1) the CE method is a good alternative for the RID assay, the latter having important constraints when considering its practicality, and (2) the Bx method is a cheap and user-friendly indirect method to evaluate the FPT in new-born Belgian Blue beef calves. • BCLMs are appropriate for analyzing test characteristics in the absence of a gold standard. • Serum capillary electrophoresis is a good alternative to radial immunodiffusion. • Brix refractometry is a cheap method for evaluating failure of passive transfer of immunity in calves. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of Burdizzo castration and abrupt weaning on the behaviour, blood traits and performance of beef calves when weaning was conducted concurrently or consecutively to castration. In total, 64 male beef calves aged between 6 and 7 months were assigned to a 2×2 factorial design with the following treatment groups (n=16 animals per treatment): (1) castrated and concurrently weaned in week 0 (CAS-WEA); (2) castrated in week 0 and weaned in week 4 (CAS-CON); (3) bulls weaned in week 0 (BUL-WEA); and (4) bulls weaned in week 4 (BUL-CON). The behaviour of the calves was observed for 3 days following weaning. Blood was collected weekly from weeks 0 to 5 and analysed for the acute-phase protein haptoglobin, and neutrophil and lymphocyte percentages. BW was recorded weekly from weeks 0 to 7. Animals were slaughtered at 17 months and weight, dressing percentage and carcass classifications were recorded. On day 1 after weaning, the number of vocalizations (calls/10 min) was higher in BUL-WEA (7.2) and CAS-WEA (5.4) than in calves of CAS-CON (2.8) and BUL-CON (2.9) groups (P<0.05). From days 1 to 3 vocalizations decreased in all groups. CAS-CON and BUL-CON animals spent 20% lying on day 1 after weaning compared with 40% in CAS-WEA and BUL-WEA calves (P<0.05). The haptoglobin concentration decreased during the first 5 weeks after weaning in all groups independent of the castration, weaning group or its interaction (P>0.05). WEA groups showed an increased average daily gain (ADG) during weeks 0 to 3 and a reduced ADG during 4 to 7 weeks in comparison with CON animals. At slaughter, bulls were about 80 kg heavier than castrates and had a superior dressing percentage and carcass classification (P>0.05). In conclusion, weaning had a greater effect on the number of vocalizations, standing/walking and lying behaviour and ADG compared with Burdizzo castration. In comparison with undertaking the procedures separately, concurrent castration and weaning neither affected behaviour and haematological parameters nor impaired performance. Angus x Simmental crossbred heifers (n = 150) and steers (n = 100) were used to evaluate 1 of 5 growing diets: 1) a corn-based growing diet (CRN); 2) a high-fat, high-protein coproduct blend; 3) a high-fat, low-protein coproduct blend; 4) a low-fat, high-protein coproduct blend; and 5) a low-fat, low-protein coproduct blend in a 2 * 2 + 1 factorial arrangement. Lowprotein and low-fat diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isofat to CRN (16.0% CP and 3.0% fat), and high-protein and high-fat diets were formulated to have 20.0% CP and 5.0% fat, respectively. Calves were weaned at 85 ± 1.2 d, blocked by weight, and allotted to pens (10 calves/pen) within sex (10 pens of steers and 15 pens of heifers). The objective of this experiment was to determine if the concentration of protein or fat or their interaction in coproducts used in growing diets fed to early-weaned calves affects feedlot performance or carcass composition. Starting on d 0, calves (141 ± 1.2 d of age) were fed experimental diets for 112 d and then fed a common feedlot diet for an additional 112 d. Body weight, hip height, and ultrasound data were collected at the end of each 112-d feeding phase. Carcass data included HCW, LM area (LMA), 12th-rib back fat (BF), marbling score (MS), KPH, and USDA quality grade. There was no fat x protein interaction (Z3 > 0.27); therefore, only main effects are discussed. No effects (P > 0.47) of CRN, protein, or fat were detected for BW at d 112 or 224. Increased dietary protein resulted in greater (P = 0.04) ADG at d 112 compared to calves fed low protein. Feeding cattle CRN decreased (P = 0.04) DMI and increased (P <0.01) G:F during the growing phase compared to coproducts. High-fat diets increased (P = 0.05) BF in calves at d 112 compared to low-fat diets. High-protein diets decreased (P=0.02) ultrasound MS at d 112 compared to low-protein diets. Carcasses from cattle fed high-fat diets had greater (P = 0.03) MS compared to those from cattle fed low-fat diets. No differences (P >0.14) were observed for HCW, LMA, BF, KPH, or yield grade. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of a single or multiple intramuscular (i.m.) injection of ketoprofen and castration technique on physiological and behavioral indicators of pain in beef calves. A total of 150 bull calves (284.8 ± 22.7 kg BW) were used in both experiments, each 1 conducted as a 3 x 2 factorial design, where main factors included castration technique--no castration (CT), surgical (SU), or band (BA)--and drug administration--physiological solution (PS) or i.m. injection of ketoprofen (KP; 3 mg Anafen/kg BW) in the neck of calves. Animals were weighed weekly during the experiment to calculate ADG. Behavioral responses indicative of pain and discomfort during the castration procedure were documented using a visual analog score (VAS) by an experienced observer who was blind to the treatments. Movements of the animals in the chute during castration were quantified using a strain gauge system mounted on the head gate to evaluate the escape response of the cattle. Pens were equipped with an automated feed bunk monitoring system enabling feed intake and feeding behavior to be continuously monitored for each individual. Thermographic images of the scrotal area were evaluated 24 and 0.5 h before castration, 0.5, 1, 24, 48, and 270 h postcastration, and weekly thereafter until the end of the trial. Blood samples were obtained postcastration to evaluate changes in total white blood cell (WBC) count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (N:L) ratio. Saliva samples were taken 24 and 0.5 h before castration, immediately after castration, and 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 24, and 48 h and then 5, 7, and 14 d after castration to determine Cortisol concentration. Scrotal temperature, VAS, total WBC, N:L ratio, salivary Cortisol, mobility, and pressure exerted in the chute were greater (P < 0.05) and ADG and feed intake were lower (P < 0.05) in SU than in CT animals within the first week after castration. Also, BA calves had a greater (P < 0.05) scrotal temperature around wk 4 after castration and a lower feed intake and ADG at wk 2 and 3 and wk 6 and 7 after castration, respectively, compared to CT. Treatment KP had limited effects on reducing the indicators of pain associated with SU or BA, suggesting that further studies will be needed to assess the posology of the i.m. administration of keto-profen to improve the consistency of its effects as a pain mitigation strategy after castration. Abstract: The weight gain performance and oocysts reduction, as response to the metaphylactic treatment with Diclazuril 0.25% at the start of a coccidiosis outbreak, was studied by a cases-controls transverse study. Fifty-eight suckling calves of approximately 90 days old were randomly selected from an infected beef herd on extensive farming. The calves were weighted and individual faecal samples were taken for oocyst per gram count (OPG). Out of those, 29 were drenched with 1mgkg−1 of Diclazuril in one oral dose (group T), since the other 29 remained as control group (group C). Samples for OPG and weights were measured again at days 7 and 21 after treatment, respectively. Later, the groups were divided (by the median) in higher or lower OPG counts, and were compared in the same way, in order to remove those without apparent infection (lower OPG counts). The faecal oocysts reduction reached 99.5% (p <0.0001), for the treated group. Along the three weeks of study, an increment of 2.65kg in 21 days (125gday−1, p =0.036), was seen in treated group respect to controls, but this difference increased to 3.94kg in 21 days (p <0.0001), when only the calves with higher OPG were taken into account. These results highlight the magnitude of the subclinical impact of coccidiosis, biased by the individual susceptibility to infection, which leads to get heavier infections and express higher oocysts output. Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of preweaning limit-fed creep feed (LFC) with or without trace mineral fortification on trace min-eral status and pre- and postweaning growth perfor-mance of beef calves. At 102 (Exp. 1) and 97 (Exp. 2) d before weaning, Brahman x British cow-calf pairs (calf age = 142 ± 20 d) were stratified by calving date and randomly allocated into 1 of 8 pastures (approximately 17 pairs/pasture annually; calf BW = 104 ± 5 and 132 ± 25 kg in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively). Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures and consisted of no calf supplementation (Nonsup; 2 pastures/experiment) and limit-fed supplements with (MIN+; 3 pastures/experi-ment) or without (MIN-; 3 pastures/experiment) trace mineral fortification. Supplements were limit fed in cow exclusion areas 3 times weekly in amounts to pro-vide 0.23 kg/calf daily. In Exp. 1, supplements consist-ed of compressed cubes (approximately 3.0 by 6.5 cm) whereas in Exp. 2, supplements were offered in a loose meal mixture. At weaning, 15 and 9 heifers/treatment in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, were randomly selected to be transported (Exp. 1) or to receive an intramuscu-lar injection of porcine red blood cells (PRBC; Exp. 2), each immediately preceding a 28-d feedlot receiving evaluation. In Exp. 1 but not in Exp. 2, LCF increased weaning BW (P = 0.05) compared with Nonsup calves (229 vs. 219 kg; SEM = 4.2). Trace mineral fortifica-tion of creep feed decreased DMI of LFC (P < 0.001 and 0.11 in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively) but did not affect (P > 0.53) weaning BW of LFC calves. In Exp. 2 but not Exp. 1, Calves provided LFC had greater (P = 0.040) DMI during the first week postweaning, which was the result of greater (P = 0.040) voluntary DMI of concentrate, compared with Nonsup calves, during this period. In Exp. 2 but not in Exp. 1 (P > 0.12), MIN+ increased (P < 0.04) liver concentrations of Co, Cu, and Se compared with MIN- calves. Preweaning treat-ment had no effect on serum anti-PRBC immunoglob-ulin titers and plasma concentrations of haptoglobin and ceraloplasmin (P > 0.37). Thus, limit-fed creep-feed supplements 1) increased calf weaning BW (Exp. 1), 2) enhanced trace mineral status of weaned calves when supplements were fortified with trace minerals (Exp. 2), and 3) increased voluntary DMI during the first week of the feedlot receiving period (Exp. 2).
