Abstract

Human Papillomavirus (HPV), placebo clinical trial particularly types 16 and 18, are considered human carcinogens since an etiological association has been demonstrated between these viruses and the development of cervical cancer. While the viral role in squamous carcinoma has been largely studied, the information available on adenocarcinoma is scarce, partly because of its lower frequency. In this paper we investigated the presence of HPV types and intratype variants in adenocarcinomas of the cervix. A total of 23 archive samples, fixed and paraffin embedded biopsies, were included. The detection and viral typing was performed by generic PCR and subsequent single stranded conformational polymorphism analysis (SSCP). Genetic variability was investigated in a 450 bp-fragment corresponding to L1 gene by post-PCR direct sequencing. We detected 11 HPV 16 positive samples (9 prototypes and 2 variants: 1 European and 1 Asiatic-American), 10 HPV 18 (9 prototypes and 1 European variant), 1 HPV 31 and 1 negative. The high risk HPV association with this neoplasia was confirmed with a high prevalence (43%) of HPV 18, (but) without predominance over the other types as previously published. The demonstrated variability in L1 protein epitopes originated aminoacidic changes which could have implications on the immune response and therefore should be considered in a vaccine design.

Water soluble poly(fluorene) derivatives can serve as light harvesting materials that increase the signals of FRET-based homogenous and heterogeneous fluorescent assays. The molecular structure of the backbone is important to minimize losses due to photoinduced charge transfer. Signal generation involves coordination of electrostatic forces with efficient FRET. Abstract

Studies of electroactive polymers attached to the surface of electrodes have focused more on electrochemical characteristics than on polymer structure. Modification of electrodes with such polymers in order to achieve molecular electronic functions, such as pH-dependent charge trapping and chemical sensing has been successful to some degree, but ideally one would like to be able to control the primary structure and the morphology of a polymer to a degree that would maximize the desired electrochemical properties. Such a goal becomes difficult, if not impossible, to achieve using traditional polymer synthesis techniques as the required polymers quickly become relatively exotic and complicated. The primary structure of an electroactive polymer, and ultimately its morphology (Lamellae, rods, or spheres), could be controlled if living polymerization techniques could be employed. Under such circumstances (no chain transfer or termination) the nature of the functionality at each end of the polymer, as well as the nature and length of blocks (containing a given monomer) in the polymer chain could be specified.

Abstract

Norbornenes containing esters, cyano, acetate, and related functionalities can be polymerized in a living manner employing Mo(CH-t-Bu)(NAr) (O-t-Bu)2 as the initiator, especially in THF, to give polymers with polydispersities as low as 1.04. Living polymers containing Mo-alkylidene end groups have been characterized by proton NMR methods.

Abstract

Benzonorbornadiene 2,3-dicarbomethoxynorbornadiene and 2,3- bis(trifluoromethyl)norbornadiene can be polymerized by Mo(CH-t-Bu)(NAr)(O-t-Bu) 2(Mo(CH-t-Bu)) in a well-behaved living manner to give essentially monodisperse homopolymers. Two of the polymers and (especially) poly 5 are highly trans, and are believed to be tactic. The rate of polymerization is approximately thirty times faster at room temperature, a factor of approximately ten of which can be ascribed to the lower reactivity and the remainder to the lower reactivity relative to 7-Isopropylidene-2-3-dicarbomethoxynorbornadiene is not polymerized at all by Mo(CH-t-Bu), although it does react with Mo(CH-t-Bu). An X-ray structure shows it to be a pseudo-tetrhedral species containing a syn alkylidene ligand (substituent pointing toward the imido nitrogen atom).
