Abstract

The B0s and B0 mixing frequencies, Δms and Δmd, are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV during 2011. Around 1.8 × 106 candidate events are selected of the type B0(s) → D−(s)μ+ (+ anything), where about half are from peaking and combinatorial backgrounds. To determine the B decay times, a correction is required for the momentum carried by missing particles, which is performed using a simulation-based statistical method. Associated production of muons or mesons allows us to tag the initialstate flavour and so to resolve oscillations due to mixing. We obtain Δms = (17.93 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.15 (syst)) ps−1, Δmd = (0.503 ± 0.011 (stat) ± 0.013(syst)) ps−1. The hypothesis of no oscillations is rejected by the equivalent of 5.8 standard deviations for B0s and 13.0 standard deviations for B0. This is the first observation of B0s mixing to be made using only semileptonic decays.

Abstract

A search for the rare decay D0→μ+μ- is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9fb-1, of pp collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of events is consistent with the background expectations and corresponds to an upper limit of B(D0→μ+μ-)

Abstract

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb−1 of √s = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forwardregion at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Abstract

The charged−particle production ratios p/p, K −/K +, π −/π +, (p + p)/(π ++π −), (K ++K −)/(π + + π −) and (p+ p)/(K + + K −) are measured with the LHCb detector using 0.3 nb−1 of pp collisions delivered by the LHC at √s = 0.9 TeV and 1.8 nb−1 at √s = 7 TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum pT and pseudorapidity η. The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio p/p is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, Δy ≡ ybeam − y, and is used to constrain models of baryon transport.

Abstract

The B s0→J/ψK S0 branching fraction is measured in a data sample corresponding to 0.41fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions affecting the sin2β measurement from B 0→J/ψK S0. The time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be B(B S0→J/ψK S0)=(1.83±0.28)×10 -5. This is the most precise measurement to date. © 2012 CERN.

Abstract

Using 34.7 pb−1of data collected with the LHCb detector, the inclusive production of the X(3872) meson in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV is observed for the first time. Candidates are selected in the X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−decay mode, and used to measure σ(pp→X(3872)+anything)B(X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−) = 5.4 ± 1.3 (stat) ± 0.8 (syst) nb, where σ(pp →X(3872) + anything) is the inclusive production cross section of X(3872) mesons with rapidity in the range 2.5–4.5 and transverse momentum in the range 5–20 GeV/c. In addition the masses of both the X(3872) and ψ(2S) mesons, reconstructed in the J/ψπ+π−final state, are measured to be mX(3872) = 3871.95 ± 0.48 (stat) ± 0.12 (syst) MeV/c2and mψ(2S) = 3686.12± 0.06 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst) MeV/c2.

Abstract

We present a statistical analysis of 132 dayside (LT 0700-1700) bow shock crossings of the AMPTE/IRM spacecraft. We perform a superposed epoch analysis of plasma and magnetic field parameters as well as of low frequency magnetic power spectra some minutes upstream and downstream of the bow shock by dividing the events into categories depending on the angle between bow shock normal and interplanetary magnetic field and on the plasma-beta, i.e., the ratio of plasma to magnetic pressure. Downstream of the quasi-perpendicular low-beta (beta < 0.5) bow shock we find a dominance of the left-hand polarized component at frequencies just below the ion cyclotron frequency with amplitudes of about 3 nT. These waves are identified as ion cyclotron waves which grow in a low-beta regime due to the proton temperature anisotropy. We find a strong correlation of this anisotropy with the intensity of the left-hand polarized component. Downstream of some nearly perpendicular high-beta (beta > 1.0) crossings mirror waves are identified. However, there are also cases where the conditions for mirror modes are met downstream of the nearly perpendicular shock, but no mirror waves are observed., Comment: 28 pages including 10 figures

Abstract

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at √S = 7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/ψ production is measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the fiducial region pT ∈ [0; 14] GeV/c and y ∈ [2.0; 4.5]. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/ψ from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same pT and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 pb&-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 ± 0.04 ± 1.40+1.64 &-2.20 μb for prompt J/ψ production and 1.14 ± 0.01 ± 0.16 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/ψ production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/ψ polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

Abstract

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at √S = 7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/ψ production is measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the fiducial region pT ∈ [0; 14] GeV/c and y ∈ [2.0; 4.5]. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/ψ from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same pT and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 pb&-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 ± 0.04 ± 1.40+1.64 &-2.20 μb for prompt J/ψ production and 1.14 ± 0.01 ± 0.16 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/ψ production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/ψ polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

Abstract

ImportanceNonclinical studies suggest that the combination of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase and programmed cell death 1/programmed cell death–ligand 1 inhibitors has enhanced antitumor activity; however, the patient populations that may benefit from this combination have not been identified.ObjectiveTo evaluate whether the combination of avelumab and talazoparib is effective in patients with pathogenic BRCA1/2 or ATM alterations, regardless of tumor type.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsIn this pan-cancer tumor-agnostic phase 2b nonrandomized controlled trial, patients with advanced BRCA1/2-altered or ATM-altered solid tumors were enrolled into 2 respective parallel cohorts. The study was conducted from July 2, 2018, to April 12, 2020, at 42 institutions in 9 countries.InterventionsPatients received 800 mg of avelumab every 2 weeks and 1 mg of talazoparib once daily.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary end point was confirmed objective response (OR) per RECIST 1.1 by blinded independent central review.ResultsA total of 200 patients (median [range] age, 59.0 [26.0-89.0] years; 132 [66.0%] women; 15 [7.5%] Asian, 11 [5.5%] African American, and 154 [77.0%] White participants) were enrolled: 159 (79.5%) in the BRCA1/2 cohort and 41 (20.5%) in the ATM cohort. The confirmed OR rate was 26.4% (42 patients, including 9 complete responses [5.7%]) in the BRCA1/2 cohort and 4.9% (2 patients) in the ATM cohort. In the BRCA1/2 cohort, responses were more frequent (OR rate, 30.3%; 95% CI, 22.2%-39.3%, including 8 complete responses [6.7%]) and more durable (median duration of response: 10.9 months [95% CI, 6.2 months to not estimable]) in tumor types associated with increased heritable cancer risk (ie, BRCA1/2-associated cancer types, such as ovarian, breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancers) and in uterine leiomyosarcoma (objective response in 3 of 3 patients and with ongoing responses greater than 24 months) compared with non–BRCA-associated cancer types. Responses in the BRCA1/2 cohort were numerically higher for patients with tumor mutational burden of 10 or more mutations per megabase (mut/Mb) vs less than 10 mut/Mb. The combination was well tolerated, with no new safety signals identified.Conclusions and RelevanceIn this phase 2b nonrandomized controlled trial, neither the BRCA1/2 nor ATM cohort met the prespecified OR rate of 40%. Antitumor activity for the combination of avelumab and talazoparib in patients with BRCA1/2 alterations was observed in some patients with BRCA1/2-associated tumor types and uterine leiomyosarcoma; benefit was minimal in non–BRCA-associated cancer types.Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03565991

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag werden didaktische Interventionsstudien als Schulentwicklungsanlässe vorgestellt, die Schulen wissenschaftliche Lösungen für Praxisprobleme anbieten. Indem in diesem Kontext zwei Funktionssysteme (Wissenschaftssystem und Erziehungssystem) miteinander interagieren, soll den Fragen nachgegangen werden: Wie setzen Lehrpersonen diese, aus ihrer Umwelt kommenden, Programme um und welchen Nutzen können die Programme für die Entwicklung der Schule als Organisation haben? Empirisch bearbeitet werden diese anhand des didaktischen Interventionsprogramms „Selbstreflexives Lernen im schulischen Kontext“. Dieses hat die Förderung des selbstregulierten Lernens im Mathematikunterricht der siebten und achten Klasse an Realschulen in Baden-Württemberg zum Ziel. Es zeigt sich, dass die Umsetzung des Programms nicht den Erwartungen der Forschung entspricht. Dennoch erweist sich die Intervention als Initiator für Prozesse der Entwicklung und Reflexion. Dabei fällt vor allem die Bedeutung konjunktiven Verstehens zwischen Lehrpersonen auf, wenn Entwicklungsprozesse jenseits des eigenen Unterrichts angestoßen werden.

Abstract

Background Childhood asthma is a result of a complex interaction of genetic and environmental components causing epigenetic and immune dysregulation, airway inflammation and impaired lung function. Although different microarray based EWAS studies have been conducted, the impact of epigenetic regulation in asthma development is still widely unknown. We have therefore applied unbiased whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) to characterize global DNA-methylation profiles of asthmatic children compared to healthy controls. Methods Peripheral blood samples of 40 asthmatic and 42 control children aged 5-15 years from three birth cohorts were sequenced together with paired cord blood samples. Identified differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were categorized in genotype-associated, cell-type-dependent, or prenatally-primed. Network analysis and subsequent natural language processing of DMR-associated genes was complemented by targeted analysis of functional translation of epigenetic regulation on the transcriptional and protein level. Results In total, 158 DMRs were identified in asthmatic children compared to controls of which 37% were related to the eosinophil content. A global hypomethylation was identified affecting predominantly enhancer regions and regulating key immune genes such as IL4, IL5RA, and EPX. These DMRs were confirmed in n=267 samples and could be linked to aberrant gene expression. Out of the 158 DMRs identified in the established phenotype, 56 were perturbed already at birth and linked, at least in part, to prenatal influences such as tobacco smoke exposure or phthalate exposure. Conclusion This is the first epigenetic study based on whole genome sequencing to identify marked dysregulation of enhancer regions as a hallmark of childhood asthma.

Abstract

Zusammenfassung: Maligne Pleuraergüsse treten bei allen Tumoren auf, am häufigsten beim Lungenkrebs, beim Mammakarzinom und bei den malignen Lymphomen. Je nach Tumortyp kommt eine systemische Behandlung (Zytostatika, Hormone) mit oder ohne Ergussentfernung in Betracht. Bei der Mehrzahl der Fälle erfolgt eine symptomatisch/palliative Lokalbehandlung mit Ergussentfernung, in der Regel mit Drainage, die mit der Pleurodese verbunden wird. Unter den Substanzen, die für eine Pleurodese benutzt werden, ist Talkum am effektivsten, entweder in Form einer Puderung während der Thorakoskopie oder mittels Einbringen von „Talc slurry“. Beim malignen Pleuramesotheliom (MPM) wurden in den letzten Jahren wesentliche Fortschritte in der Therapie erzielt. Zwei große randomisierte Studien bewirkten, dass die Antifolat-Platin-Zweifachkombination jetzt zur Standardtherapie des MPM werden konnte. Eine Metaanalyse bestätigte die Aktivität platinhaltiger Kombinationstherapien. Zweitlinientherapien und neue Substanzen werden zurzeit getestet. Zusammen mit einer effektiven Chemotherapie werden zukünftig auch multimodale Therapiekonzepte mit Chemotherapie, Operation und Bestrahlung optimiert werden können.
