Abstract

Malus S-RNase genetic diversity was analyzed in Malus × domestica cultivars and compared to European wild apple (Malus sylvestris). Using PCR-based approaches, the S-RNase genotype of 140 M. × domestica cultivars, 196 M. sylvestris trees and 27 M. sylvestris—M. × domestica hybrids was determined. S-RNase allelic richness in M. sylvestris was much higher than in M. × domestica, indicating the negative influence of domestication on S-RNase diversity. Heterogeneity of the S-RNase allelic distribution is much higher in cultivated apple than in wild apple, which shows that breeding leads to strong departure from the expected homogeneity of genes under negative frequency-dependent selection. The majority of the M. × domesticaS-alleles has been found in M. sylvestris as well, which points to strong conservation of the S-locus gene structure. Based on the sequence of all different SCAR-fragments, which comprise both the hypervariable PS1 region and the single intron, S-RNase genetic diversity was further explored. It provided some clues to the occurrence of new S-alleles among the multitude of novel S-RNase sequences that have been identified, which were mostly unique for the group of M. sylvestris individuals. The determination of the S-RNase genotypes of old cultivars and M. sylvestris will enable their introduction into new breeding strategies. As M. sylvestris has become an endangered species in Belgium, the knowledge gathered in this study will be an important tool for selecting useful genotypes for a core collection.

Abstract

Presently, the main mechanism for phase transformations in machining of steels is not absolutely clear and is still subject to research. This paper presents, three different approaches for modeling phase transformations during heating in machining operations. However, the main focus lies on two methods which can be classified into a stress related method and a thermal activation related method for the description of austenitization temperature. Both approaches separately showed very good agreements in the simulations compared to the experimental validation but were never compared in a simulation. The third method is a pre-calculated phase landscape assigning the transformation results based on a micro-mechanically motivated constitutive model to the workpiece in dependence on the temperature and strain history. The paper describes all three models in detail, and the results are also presented and discussed.

Abstract

The triple-differential dijet cross-section, \({\rm d}^3 \sigma_{ep}/{\rm d} Q^2{\rm d} \overline{E_t}^2 {\rm d}x^{jets}_\gamma\), is measured with the H1 detector at HERA as a function of the photon virtuality \(Q^2\), the fraction of the photon's momentum carried by the parton entering the hard scattering, \(\x^{jets}_\gamma\), and the square of the mean transverse energy, \(\overline{E_t}^2\), of the two highest \(E_t\) jets. Jets are found using a longitudinal boost-invariant \(k_T\) clustering algorithm in the \(\gamma^* p\) center of mass frame. The measurements cover the ranges \(1.6 < Q^2 < 80\) GeV\(^2\) in virtuality and \(0.1 < y < 0.7\) in inelasticity y. The results are well described by leading order QCD models which include the effects of a resolved component to the virtual photon. Models which treat the photon as point-like fail to describe the data. An effective leading order parton density for the virtual photon is extracted as a function of the photon virtuality, the probing scale and the parton momentum fraction. The \(x_{\gamma}\) and probing scale dependences of the parton density show characteristic features of photon structure, and a suppression of this structure with increasing \(Q^2\) is seen.

Abstract

We extend a thermodynamically consistent finite strainmicro-sphere framework elaborated by Carol et al. towards the modelling of phase-transformations to allow for the simulation of polycrystalline solids such as, e.g., shape memory alloys and shape memory polymers undergoing large deformations. The considered phase-transformation mechanism is based on statistical physics and allows the consideration of an arbitrary number of solid material phases. The specifically constructed, non-quadratic Helmholtz free energy functions considered in every micro-plane of the micro-sphere framework are extended to include individual Bain-type transformation strains for each of the phases.
