Environmental monitoring programs commonly use fish to study the health of aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, lethal sampling techniques are often employed, resulting in ethical considerations. This issue is magnified in Chilean rivers, which contain various endemic fish with conservational concern, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species™. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if mucosal vitellogenin levels in a native Chilean fish could be used to accurately assess the endocrine disruption potentials of wastewater treatment plant and pulp and paper mill effluents (WWTPEs and PPMEs, respectively). For this, Carmelita de Concepción (Percilia irwini) specimens were exposed WWTPEs and PPEs for 12 days, and mucosal vitellogenin-like phosphoprotein concentrations were determined with a colorimetric assay. Increased VTG-like phosphoproteins and hepatic ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase induction levels (widely used as biomarker for exposure) were detected in effluent-exposed individuals. This study supports the endocrine disruption potentials of WWTPEs and PPEs in P. irwini. Notably, this is the first study to use non- lethal biomarkers to determine the effects of industrial effluents in a native Chilean freshwater species, thus presenting an alternative vitellogenin-like protein detection method. Nevertheless, additional population and toxicity studies of fish native to Chilean rivers are needed. Further investigation is also required on xeno-oestrogen compounds and on methods for mitigating potential effects on biodiversity. RESUMEN Los programas de monitoreo ambiental comúnmente usan peces para estudiar la salud de los ecosistemas acuáticos. Sin embargo, a menudo se emplean técnicas de muestreo letal, lo que resulta en consideraciones éticas. Este es mayor en ríos chilenos, donde habitan peces endémicos en alguna categoría de conservación preocupante, según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la NaturalezaTM. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue determinar si los niveles de vitelogenina en mucus externo de peces nativos podrían usarse para evaluar el potencial de disrupción endocrina de efluentes de plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales y de las plantas de celulosa y papel (WWTPE y PPME, respectivamente). Para esto, ejemplares de Carmelita de Concepción (Percilia irwini) se expusieron a WWTPE y PPE durante 12 días, y se determinaron las concentraciones de fosfoproteínas de tipo vitelogenina (VTG) el mucus mediante un ensayo colorimétrico. Se evidenció un aumento de fosfoproteínas tipo VTG e inducción de la etoxiresorufina-o-deetilasa hepática (biomarcador de exposición) en individuos expuestos a efluentes. Este estudio respalda el potencial de disrupción endocrina de los WWTPE y los PPE. Cabe destacar que este es el primer estudio que utiliza biomarcadores no letales para determinar los efectos de los efluentes industriales en una especie nativa de agua dulce chilena, por lo que presenta un método alternativo de detección de proteínas similares a la vitelogenina. Sin embargo, se necesitan estudios poblacionales y de toxicidad adicionales. Se requiere investigación adicional sobre los compuestos de xenoestrógenos y mitigación de los posibles efectos sobre la biodiversidad.

The GEO-6 Regional Assessment for Latin America and theCaribbean (LAC) identifies the main environmental changesthat have been observed in the region since GEO-5 (2012) andGEO LAC 3 (2010); and considers priorities for action withinthe overall framework of the new 2030 sustainability agenda.At the beginning of the GEO-6 process, governments ofLAC and other key stakeholder groups (at the GEO REINConference held in Panama City in May 2015) identifieda number of regional priorities that helped to shape thefocus for assessing suitable response options for the region.These priorities included: impacts from climate changeand natural hazards; biodiversity and ecosystem services;natural resources and tourism; economic developmentand sustainable consumption and production; health andenvironment; land use, land degradation and land planning;environmental governance; environmental information; andcommunication and public awareness.The GEO-6 LAC report is structured into four chapters; thefirst two present the results of the assessment followingthe Drivers-Pressures-State-Impact-Responses (DPSIR)framework, focusing on 5 major environmental themes(Air, Freshwater, Oceans, Land, and Biodiversity). Chapter3 evaluates policy progress made in key regional priorityareas; reviews particular policy success stories; and assessesthe enabling conditions for achieving the SustainableDevelopment Goals that include the natural environment asan important component/ consideration. Chapter 4 presentsa set of regional scenarios, and thereby provides insightsinto some of the options available to decision-makers asthey consider how to move the countries of the region ontomore sustainable development pathways. Sustainable watershed management in the world is an issue that has taken much importance and attention in terms of quality and availability of water for all users in the basin. The economic growth experienced by Chile in recent years has led to increased stress on aquatic systems, especially in the Biobío river basin. The Biobío basin has faced with multiple expansions for hydroelectric power, and at the same time providing sources for competing demands from urbanization, industry, agriculture and irrigation, forestry, aquaculture, tourism, recreation, and it is a regional domain of indigenous peoples. There is a growing unease about the current process of managing single developments with Environmental Impacts Assessment (EIA). Assessing the impacts of all these threats to freshwater ecosystem is challenging. The Biobío offers an opportunity to make advances in a number of important areas for regional watershed management, including national standardization requirements for effects monitoring and for the development of a regional database. For Biobío river basin, development of such a conceptual framework requires several steps that include identifying: the scope (basin and/or subbasin) and setting (physiographic/geopolitics governance); threats to the system (past present and future); regional resource users and public services, and natural variation and gradients within the system. In these review we state what kind of pilot studies would be required to help design a Regional Cumulative Effects Monitoring Framework and must establish key design criteria including what species (species differential sensitivity) and parameters (level of organization), the magnitude of change we wish to detect and monitoring frequency are necessary to ensure sustainable management of the Biobío river basin. La gestión sustentable de las cuencas hidrográficas en el mundo es problema que ha tomado una gran relevancia y atención, en términos de calidad y disponibilidad de agua para todos los usuarios de las cuencas. El crecimiento económico experimentado por Chile en los últimos años ha llevado a un aumento en el estrés a los sistemas acuáticos continentales, especialmente la cuenca del río Biobío. La cuenca del rio Biobío ha enfrentado un gran aumento en el desarrollo de hidroeléctrico, y al mismo tiempo ha tenido que proveer los recursos para demandas hídricos que compiten entre si, como son la urbanización, agricultura e riego, forestal, acuicultura, turismo, recreación, así como ser parte del territorio de los pueblos originarios. Existe una creciente inquietud sobre el proceso actual de gestión de proyectos individuales con procesos individuales de Evaluación de Impactos Ambientales (EIA). La evaluación de los impactos de todas estas amenazas a los ecosistemas dulceacuícolas es un reto no menor. El río Biobío ofrece una oportunidad para avanzar en una serie de áreas importantes para la gestión regional de cuencas, incluyendo los requisitos nacionales de normalización para la vigilancia de los efectos y para el desarrollo de una base de datos regional. Para la cuenca del río Biobío, el desarrollo de un marco conceptual como este requiere de varios pasos que incluyen la identificación de: el alcance (cuenca y / o subcuenca) y el área de gobernanza (fisiográficas / geopolítica de gobierno); las amenazas al sistema (pasado, presente y futuro); los usuarios regionales de recursos, así como los servicios públicos involucrados; la variación natural y gradientes dentro del sistema. En esta revisión planteamos los estudios piloto y criterios clave necesarios para ayudar a diseñar un Marco Regional de Monitoreo de Efectos Acumulativos, incluyendo la selección de especies (sensibilidad diferencial de especies), los parámetros a evaluar (nivel de organización), la magnitud del cambio que deseamos para detectar, así como la frecuencia de monitoreo necesario para garantizar la gestión sustentable de la cuenca del río Biobío.

In this study levels, fluxes and temporal trend of PAHs are reported in a sediment core from Chungará Lake (18° S) in Northern Chile. The sediments were obtained by Kayac corer and freeze dried. PAHs were extracted in SOXHLET system and measured by HPLC with diode array detector and fluorescence detection. Sedimentary record chronology was determined using 210Pb isotopes and organic carbon (%) was also measured in sediments. Concentrations (ng g-1 d.w.) of PAHs were low ranging from ~1 to 50. PAHs fingerprint was dominated by 3-ring (21%) and 4-ring. Organic carbon (%) ranged from ~17 to 24 (21±3) and no statistical significant correlation (p

El hemocultivo es el "estándar de oro" para el diagnóstico de bacteriemia, condición grave de alta morbi-mortalidad. Por esto, se estima que el hemocultivo es un examen crítico, que requiere monitorización de su calidad. El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar los resultados de la monitorización de 3 años de 5 indicadores de calidad del hemocultivo implementados en nuestro hospital. El porcentaje promedio de contaminación de las botellas para hemocultivo fue 0,7%, el porcentaje de botellas de adultos con volumen adecuado fue 46%, la concordancia de la tinción de Gram con la identificación final correspondió a 99,4%, el 100% de las participaciones en encuestas de control de calidad externo fueron correctas y 88,7% de los avisos de valores de alerta de la tinción de Gram fueron realizados antes de 1 hora. En el año 2011 se cumplió con las metas propuestas por el laboratorio para todos los indicadores, excepto con el porcentaje de botellas con volumen apropiado de sangre. Este último, se encuentra muy por debajo de la meta y debe ser mejorado a la brevedad, ya que el volumen de sangre cultivada es el factor más importante para obtener un rendimiento óptimo del hemocultivo. Blood culture is considered the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of bacteremia, critical condition with high morbidity and mortality. Because of its importance, it is estimated that the blood culture is a critical test that requires close monitoring on the quality with which the process is performed. The objective of this work is to show the results of the monitoring carried out during the past three years, of 5 quality indicators of blood cultures in the laboratory of the Hospital Clínico de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, considering pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical aspects. In the 3 years monitored the mean contamination was 0,7%, 46% of adult bottles had adequate volume, match between Gram stain with final identification was 99.4%, 100% of correct participations were achieved in surveys of external quality control and Gram staining notification before 1 hour was 88.7%. With regard to proposed aims, in 2011 the laboratory complies with all, except the percentage of bottles with appropriate volume of blood inoculated. This indicator is very low and should be corrected as soon as possible since it is known that it is an important condition for optimum performance of blood cultures.

There is scarce basic biological data on native freshwater fish species from Chile and next to zero on growth, gonad development and reproduction, which are critical for the purposes of the conservation of their natural populations. Seasonal analysis of sub-individual (oocyte development) and population (length frequency, growth rates) endpoints in Trichomycterus areolatus and Percilia gillissi were evaluated from February 2007 to January 2008. Oocyte development has a marked seasonality for P. gillissi, with mature eggs in October and declining frequency of mature oocytes into January. For T. areolatus we found some mature eggs in July, with highest number of mature eggs in October, coincident with previous data on maximum gonad size. Both species showed a multiple spawning reproductive strategy, with a long spawning season starting in spring to early summer. Increased numbers of juveniles were observed during mid-summer for P. gillissi,and during the end of the summer and beginning of autumn for T. areolatus. Juveniles had a higher growth coefficient (K) (0.56-0.38 mm month-1) than adults (0.29-0.15 mm month-1), and almost all juveniles in the population reached maturity before the spring (>50 mm for T areolatus and >40 mm for P. gillissi) and were incorporated into the population as a new recruitment cohort. Knowledge of the seasonal variability of these individual and population level responses can help better understand the biology of the species, and simultaneously improve the management and conservation of freshwater biota in Chile.

Existen escasos datos de biología básica sobre las especies de peces nativas chilenas de agua dulce y casi ninguno en sobre el crecimiento, el desarrollo gonadal y reproducción, que son fundamentales para los propósitos de la conservación de sus poblaciones naturales. El análisis estacional de los parámetros sub-individuales (desarrollo de oocitos) y poblacionales (frecuencia de tallas y tasa de crecimiento) en Trichomycterus areolatus y Percilia gillissi fueron evaluados entre febrero de 2007 y enero de 2008.El desarrollo de los oocitos posee una marcada estacionalidad en P. gillissi con oocitos maduros en octubre y una disminución de estos estados maduros hacia enero. En T. areolatus encontramos oocitos maduros en Julio, pero con una mayor abundancia durante octubre, coincidente con datos previos de máximo desarrollo de la gónada. Ambas especies mostraron una estrategia reproductiva de desoves multiples, con una temporada de desove que comienza en primavera hasta principios de verano. Ambas especies evidencian un mayor número de juveniles durante mediados de la estación estival (P. gillissi), finales de la estación estival (T areolatus) y principios de otoño, con un número decreciente hacia primavera. Los juveniles tienen un coeficiente de crecimiento (K) mayor (0.56-0.38 mm mes-1) comparados con los adultos (0.29-0.15 mm mes-1), y antes de primavera prácticamente todos los individuos en la población alcanzan la madurez (>50 mm for T areolatus and >40 mm for P. gillissi) y los juveniles son incorporados a la población en una nueva fase de reclutamiento. El conocimiento de la variabilidad estacional de estas respuestas individuales (desarrollo de oocitos) y poblacionales (frecuencia de tallas, tasas de crecimiento) puede ayudarnos a un mejor entendimiento de la biología de las especies, y simultáneamente mejorar el manejo y conservación de la biota dulceacuícola.
