Do psychedelics affect sexual functioning postacutely? Anecdotal and qualitative evidence suggests they do, but this has never been formally tested. While sexual functioning and satisfaction are generally regarded as an important aspect of human wellbeing, sexual dysfunction is a common symptom of mental health disorders. It is also a common side effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a first line treatment for depression. The aim of the present paper was to investigate the post-acute effects of psychedelics on self-reported sexual functioning, combining data from two independent studies, one large and naturalistic and the other a smaller but controlled clinical trial. Naturalistic use of psychedelics was associated with improvements in several facets of sexual functioning and satisfaction, including improved pleasure and communication during sex, satisfaction with ones partner and physical appearance. Convergent results were found in a controlled trial of psilocybin therapy versus an SSRI, escitalopram, for depression. In this trial, patients treated with psilocybin reported positive changes in sexual functioning after treatment, while patients treated with escitalopram did not. Despite focusing on different populations and settings, this is the first research study to quantitively investigate the effects of psychedelics on sexual functioning. Results imply a potential positive effect on post-acute sexual functioning and highlight the need for more research on this.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for the therapeutic effects of psychedelics. However, it is still uncertain how these drugs interact with serotonergic antidepressants (serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs)). OBJECTIVE: This study explores the interaction between psychedelics and SRIs in terms of therapeutic effects. The objective is to compare acute psychedelic effects and subsequent changes in well-being and depressive symptoms among SRI - individuals (not on psychiatric medication) and SRI + individuals (undergoing SRI treatment). METHODS: Using prospective survey data, the study employs multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and linear mixed effect models to analyse subjective differences and changes in well-being and depressive symptoms pre- and post-psychedelic experiences. RESULTS: Results indicate that SRI - participants experience significantly more intense subjective effects compared to SRI + participants (F = 3.200, p = 0.016) in MANCOVA analysis. Further analysis reveals SRI - individuals report stronger mystical (18.2% higher, p = 0.048), challenging (50.9% higher, p = 0.001) and emotional breakthrough experiences (31.9% higher, p = 0.02) than SRI + individuals. No differences are observed in drug-induced visual effects (p = 0.19). Both groups exhibited similar improvements in well-being and depressive symptoms after the psychedelic experience. CONCLUSION: Individuals presumed to be on serotonergic antidepressants during psychedelic use display reduced subjective effects but similar antidepressant effects compared to those not undergoing SRI treatment. Further controlled research is needed to comprehend the interplay between serotonergic antidepressants and psychedelics, illuminating potential therapeutic benefits and limitations in clinical contexts.

Plasmids are mobile genetic elements found in many clades of Archaea and Bacteria. They drive horizontal gene transfer, impacting ecological and evolutionary processes within microbial communities, and hold substantial importance in human health and biotechnology. To support plasmid research and provide scientists with data of an unprecedented diversity of plasmid sequences, we introduce the IMG/PR database, a new resource encompassing 699 973 plasmid sequences derived from genomes, metagenomes and metatranscriptomes. IMG/PR is the first database to provide data of plasmid that were systematically identified from diverse microbiome samples. IMG/PR plasmids are associated with rich metadata that includes geographical and ecosystem information, host taxonomy, similarity to other plasmids, functional annotation, presence of genes involved in conjugation and antibiotic resistance. The database offers diverse methods for exploring its extensive plasmid collection, enabling users to navigate plasmids through metadata-centric queries, plasmid comparisons and BLAST searches. The Hedgehog (Hh) pathway plays a crucial role in embryonic development, acting both as a morphogenic signal that organizes tissue formation and a potent mitogenic signal driving cell proliferation. Dysregulated Hh signaling leads to various developmental defects in the brain. This article aims to review the roles of Hh signaling in the development of the neocortex in the mammalian brain, focusing on its regulation of neural progenitor proliferation and neuronal production. The review will summarize studies on genetic mouse models that have targeted different components of the Hh pathway, such as the ligand Shh, the receptor Ptch1, the GPCR-like transducer Smo, the intracellular transducer Sufu, and the three Gli transcription factors. As key insights into the Hh signaling transduction mechanism were obtained from mouse models displaying neural tube defects, this review will also cover some studies on Hh signaling in neural tube development. The results from these genetic mouse models suggest an intriguing hypothesis that elevated Hh signaling may play a role in the gyrification of the brain in certain species. Additionally, the distinctive production of GABAergic interneurons in the dorsal cortex in the human brain may also be linked to the extension of Hh signaling from the ventral to the dorsal brain region. Overall, these results suggest key roles of Hh signaling as both a morphogenic and mitogenic signal during the forebrain development and imply the potential involvement of Hh signaling in the evolutionary expansion of the neocortex.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Fibromyalgia is a particularly debilitating form of widespread chronic pain. Fibromyalgia remains poorly understood, and treatment options are limited or moderately effective at best. Here, we present a protocol for a mechanistic study investigating the effects of psychedelic-assisted-therapy in a fibromyalgia population. The principal focus of this trial is the central mechanism(s) of psilocybin-therapy i.e., in the brain and on associated mental schemata, primarily captured by electroencephalography (EEG) recordings of the acute psychedelic state, plus pre and post Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). METHODS: Twenty participants with fibromyalgia will complete 8 study visits over 8 weeks. This will include two dosing sessions where participants will receive psilocybin at least once, with doses varying up to 25mg. Our primary outcomes are 1) Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZc) recorded acutely using EEG, and the 2) the (Brief Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire (BEAQ) measured at baseline and primary endpoint. Secondary outcomes will aim to capture broad aspects of the pain experience and related features through neuroimaging, self-report measures, behavioural paradigms, and qualitative interviews. Pain Symptomatology will be measured using the Brief Pain Inventory Interference Subscale (BPI-IS), physical and mental health-related function will be measured using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Further neurobiological investigations will include functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (changes from baseline to primary endpoint), and acute changes in pre- vs post-acute spontaneous brain activity - plus event-related potential functional plasticity markers, captured via EEG. DISCUSSION: The results of this study will provide valuable insight into the brain mechanisms involved in the action of psilocybin-therapy for fibromyalgia with potential implications for the therapeutic action of psychedelic-therapy more broadly. It will also deliver essential data to inform the design of a potential subsequent RCT.

Recent studies have shown that variations in the parameters of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process significantly impact the microstructure and thermomechanical properties of NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs). Understanding how parameter selection influences the final NiTi SMA properties enables the strategic design of additively manufactured (AM) components with tailored mechanical and transformation behavior, suitable for specific applications in a plethora of scientific fields. However, the connection between processing and thermomechanical properties of NiTi SMAs is still not completely understood. This study investigates the effects of AM parameters laser power (72–185 W), scanning speed (668-1739 mm/s), and hatch spacing (28–85 μm) on a near equiatomic NiTi powder. Low porosity levels are found in the samples additively manufactured (AM) with the different LPBF parameter combinations. The findings also reveal that transformation temperatures and nickel evaporation trends correlate directly with volumetric energy density (VED). Additionally, the amount of Ti2Ni precipitates increases with higher VED. Thermal cycles under constant stress, training, and two-way shape memory effect tests have been performed; the results demonstrate a strain recovery ratio of 2–3.5% for most of the samples. The results arising from this study pave the way for the engineering of customized materials with tailored properties from the same alloy metal powder.

Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy fails to achieve durable responses in over 60% of relapsed/refractory (R/R) large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) patients in the third or later line setting. After CAR-T failure, survival outcomes are heterogeneous and a prognostic model in this patient population is lacking. A training cohort of 216 patients with progressive disease (PD) after CAR-T from 12 Spanish centers was used to develop the Post-CAR Prognostic Index (PC-PI); primary endpoint was overall survival (OS) from CAR-T progression. The impact of CD on patients’ quality of life is profound, with significant reductions in physical, emotional, and social well-being. Despite advancements in therapeutic options, including biologics, immunomodulators, and small molecules, many patients struggle to achieve or maintain remission, leading to a considerable therapeutic ceiling. This has led to an increased focus on novel and emerging treatments. This context underscores the importance of exploring advanced and innovative treatment options for managing refractory CD. By examining the latest approaches, including immunomodulators, combination therapies, stem cell therapies, and emerging treatments like fecal microbiota transplantation and dietary interventions, there is an opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of how best to address and manage refractory cases of CD. Este artículo presenta una aproximación biográfica a la figura de Catalina Bravo, una actriz relegada al olvido. Recorre su trayectoria artística en los principales teatros madrileños, Príncipe y de la Cruz, y en el Teatre de la Santa Creu de Barcelona, destacando el repertorio que interpretó, su evolución en la jerarquía de actrices y su reflejo retributivo, así como la recepción de su trabajo por la crítica. Recientemente se ha conocido que la actriz interpretó la única intervención musical del drama de Hartzenbusch Los amantes de Teruel. Se pretende, desde esta investigación, recuperar la trayectoria escénica de Catalina Bravo prestando atención a su vertiente musical para poder discernir si la actuación en el drama de Hartzenbusch fue anecdótica o si su repertorio acredita que pueda ser considerada una canta-actriz, de la misma manera que sus coetáneas Matilde Díez o Bárbara Lamadrid.

Background: Chemsex has been defined as the deliberate use of drugs for prolonged sexual intercourse between gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Drugs associated with chemsex can trigger mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, risk of psychosis and suicidal ideation, social isolation, stigmatization, and even loss of impulse control and lack of coping strategies. Currently, the increase in illicit drugs in a sexual context is considered an outbreak of a public health emergency. Objective: The aim of this study is the construction and validation of the Chem-Sex Inventory (CSI), a new scale to assess the mental health risk of chemsex behaviors. Methods: A cross-sectional design was conducted to study 563 participants. Data were collected through an online questionnaire between January and April 2023, and the construct validity of the CSI was assessed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The sample was, on average, 36 years old (SD: ±9.2). The majority of gender identity was cisgender (97.7%). A factor structure was found that can be summarized in four dimensions: emotional instability, risk of psychosis, altered body perception, and risk of suicide. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) presents adequate reliability values, with a Cronbach’s alpha above 0.87 for all dimensions and a McDonald’s omega above 0.88 with a good fit of the 42 items. Conclusions: Our study has shown that the Chem-Sex Inventory (CSI) scale has factorial validity and could be used in clinical practice and research to measure the behavioral contribution of the chemsex phenomenon in MSM.

Abstract Bacterial vaginosis is a polymicrobial syndrome characterized by the decrease of Lactobacilli and an overgrowth of facultative and anaerobic bacteria in vaginal fluid. Though it has received little attention, it has been associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, such as pre-term labor and delivery, premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, and postpartum infections. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics from September 15 to December 14, 2021, at public hospitals in West Shoa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 260 pregnant women, and systematic random sampling was employed to recruit the study participants. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and the vaginal swab was collected using a sterile cotton swab. The gram staining result was interpreted using the Nugent scoring system. Data was entered into an Excel spreadsheet and exported to STATA-14 for analysis. Data were presented using tables and graphs. Binary and multivariable logistic regressions were performed. Variables with a P value ≤ 0.25 at the binary logistic regression were entered into the multivariable logistic regression. Finally, variables with a P value ≤ 0.05 were considered predictors of bacterial vaginosis and interpreted using adjusted Odds Ratios (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 260 pregnant women attending antenatal care were included in the study. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis according to the Nugent scoring system was 22.3% (95% CI 17.4 to 27.9%). Pregnant women with other marital status were at reduced risk of bacterial vaginosis as compared with married pregnant women (AOR = 0.260, 95% CI 0.068 to 0.9995; P = 0.05). Rural residence (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.05 to 4.24; P = 0.036), use of one pant per week (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI 1.04 to 7.2; P = 0.041), and use of two or more pants per week (AOR = 4.96, 95% CI 1.49 to 16.57; P = 0.009) were significantly associated with bacterial vaginosis. In the current study, a high magnitude of bacterial vaginosis was reported. Residence, marital status, and number of pants used per week were found significantly associated among pregnant women. Hence, screening for the disease should be integrated into the recommended basic laboratory investigations during antenatal visits.

En un marco de tensión acumulada entre la Iglesia católica y el Estado mexicano, la Guerra Civil española colocó al clero mexicano ante una encrucijada. Este artículo muestra las posturas que en Christus, revista al servicio del episcopado mexicano, fueron expresadas respecto al conflicto peninsular. Puede apreciarse desde el comienzo una clara simpatía hacia la rebelión cívico militar. Asimismo, este escrito pretende reflejar los motivos de tal posicionamiento y el porqué de algunos cambios en su tesitura entre 1936 y 1939. La visión que Christus proyectaba respecto a la lucha en España permite acaso vislumbrar, con el correr de los años, que el discurso católico militante tuvo que contenerse en algún grado, quizá para no comprometer la conciliación entre la jerarquía eclesiástica y el gobierno del general Lázaro Cárdenas.

Objectives: Characterise the circumstances associated with death during admission of adults with Down syndrome (DS) and to identify predictors of mortality. Patients and Methods: Observational study based on data on all emergent admissions of adults with DS to hospitals of the Spanish National Health System between 1997 and 2014. We analysed epidemiological and clinical variables. Results: We analysed admissions of 11,594 adults with DS, mean age 47 years. 1715 patients died (15%), being the highest mortality (35%) in individuals aged 50-59. A past medical history of cerebrovascular disease (aOR 2.95 [2.30-3.77]) or cancer (aOR 2.79 [2.07-3.75]), gross aspiration's admission (aOR 2.59 [2.20-3.04]), immobility (aOR 2.31 [1.46-3-62]), and readmission within 30 days (aOR 2.43 [2.06-2.86]) were identified as predictors of mortality. Conclusions: Adults with DS have a high in-hospital mortality rate. The main predictors of death were cerebrovascular disease, cancer, early readmission, and conditions commonly associated with advanced dementia.

¿Sirve de algo gestionar los recursos humanos en los ayuntamientos? En el momento de crisis actual, ¿está justificado el gasto en esta área? Aunque a nivel de empresa privada se ha estudiado ampliamente la inversión en gestión de recursos humanos, en el ámbito de la administración pública española la investigación es escasa. Para cubrir este hueco, este trabajo realiza un estudio sobre una muestra de 85 ayuntamientos españoles de más de 20.000 habitantes. Los análisis efectuados apoyan la idea de que efectivamente la adopción de ciertas prácticas de recursos humanos tiene un efecto positivo en los resultados de las corporaciones locales. De hecho, aunque hay prácticas que están muy reguladas por la normativa de la función pública se pueden gestionar de forma más eficiente sin colisionar con la legalidad vigente.
