Abstract

To characterize enteroviruses (EVs) circulating in farm animals in Central African Republic (CAR), we screened 192 stools of animals under 12 months belonging to family farms located in or near Bangui. To assess whether EV exchanges exist between these animals and humans, we also screened 195 stools of children who lived in contact with farm animals, as well as control stools of 358 children with no contact with farm animals. EVs were typed based on their capsid sequences.In children, all EVs belonged to species A, B and C, with EV-Cs accounting for 60%. Some EV-Cs shared recent common ancestors with lineages of vaccine-derived poliovirus that emerged in the country in 2019–2020. In animals, we identified EV-Gs that belonged to 10 different types, including a previously unknown one that we named EV-G28, while no EV-E or EV-F were observed. The CAR EV-Gs were genetically closely related to specimens sampled in other continents and some of them harboured the torovirus-derived insertion already reported in some EV-Gs. The worldwide circulation of EV-Gs is likely due the massive international trade of live animals. Besides, two human EV-Cs (coxsackievirus A17 and coxsackievirus A24) were detected in pigs, suggesting that these viruses could cross the species barrier. Our work provides original data on the epidemiology and ecology of EVs circulating among herd animals in Africa.

Abstract

ABSTRACTEnhanced Passive Safety Surveillance (EPSS) was conducted for quadrivalent inactivated split-virion influenza vaccines (IIV4) in Germany (high dose [HD]) and Finland (standard dose [SD]) for the northern hemisphere (NH) 2022/23 influenza season. The primary objective was to assess adverse events following immunization (AEFI) occurring ≤7 days post-vaccination. In each country, the EPSS was conducted at the beginning of the NH influenza season. Exposure information was documented using vaccination cards (VC), and AEFI were reported via an electronic data collection system or telephone. AEFI were assessed by seriousness and age group (Finland only). The vaccinee reporting rate (RR) was calculated as the number of vaccinees reporting ≥ 1 AEFI divided by the total vaccinees. In Germany, among 1041 vaccinees, there were 31 AEFI (ten vaccinees) during follow-up, including one serious AEFI. Of 16 AEFI (six vaccinees) with reported time of onset, 15 occurred ≤7 days post-vaccination (RR 0.58%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.21, 1.25), which was lower than the 2021/22 season (RR 1.88%, 95% CI: 1.10, 3.00). In Finland, among 1001 vaccinees, there were 142 AEFI (51 vaccinees) during follow-up, none of which were serious. Of 133 AEFI (48 vaccinees) with time of onset reported, all occurred ≤7 days post-vaccination (RR 4.80%, 95% CI: 3.56, 6.31), which was similar to the 2021/22 season (RR 4.90%, 95% CI: 3.65, 6.43). The EPSS for HD-IIV4 and for SD-IIV4 in the 2022/23 influenza season did not suggest any clinically relevant changes in safety beyond what is known/expected for IIV4s.

Background This descriptive cross-sectional study focuses on the prevalence of hypertension (HTN) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) amongst patients who visited the Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics department. Recognizing these incidence statistics is critical for improving endodontic therapy delivery and assuring high-quality dental care with positive treatment outcomes. Methods In advance of getting dental care, all patients visiting the department were advised to get their blood sugar and blood pressure levels checked at random. Measurements were taken with digital equipment, and individuals with high levels were encouraged to seek medical advice before undergoing dental procedures. The obtained data was imported into Excel and analyzed with IBM SPSS software (version 21). Results The investigation had 1,100 participants (55.8% female and 44.2% male), with an average age of 44.58 ± 12.77 years. Abstract

Background The method currently available to diagnose shigellosis is insensitive and has many limitations. Thus, this study was designed to identify specific antigenic protein(s) among the cell surface associated proteins (SAPs) of Shigella that would be valuable in the development of an alternative diagnostic assay for shigellosis, particularly one that could be run using a stool sample rather than serum. Methods The SAPs of clinical isolates of S. dysenteriae, S. boydii, Shigella flexneri, and S. sonnei were extracted from an overnight culture grown at 37 °C using acidified-glycine extraction methods. Protein profiles were observed by SDS-PAGE. To determine if antibodies specific to certain Shigella SAPs were present in both sera and stool suspensions, Western blot analysis was used to detect the presence of IgA, IgG, and IgM. Results Immunoblot analysis revealed that sera from patients infected with S. flexneri recognized 31 proteins. These SAP antigens are recognized by the host humoral response during Shigella infection. Specific antibodies against these antigens were also observed in intestinal secretions of shigellosis patients. Of these 31 S. flexneri proteins, the 35 kDa protein specifically reacted against IgA present in patients’ stool suspensions. Further study illustrated the immunoreactivity of this protein in S. dysenteriae, S. boydii, and S. sonnei. This is the first report that demonstrates the presence of immunoreactive Shigella SAPs in stool suspensions. The SAPSs could be very useful in developing a simple and rapid serodiagnostic assay for shigellosis directly from stool specimens.

Background: Low back pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal ailment that affects numerous individuals, particularly those in the workforce. Nurses, in particular, are highly susceptible to this condition. In developing countries, nurses may encounter physically demanding environments requiring them to lift or transfer patients or equipment without access to proper lifting aids. Such circumstances increase their chances of developing low back pain. Abstract

Following the trend of coefficient bound problems in Geometric Function Theory, in the present paper, we obtain the sharp bound of $|H_3(1)|$ for the class $\mathcal{S}^*$, of starlike functions and $\mathcal{SL}_q^*$, of $q$- starlike functions related with lemniscate of Bernoulli. Bound on the initial class is also an improvement over the existing known bound and the bound on the latter class generalizes the prior known outcome. Further, we determine the extremal functions to prove the sharpness of our results.

Abstract

Multiple meningiomas (MMs) tend to be benign with uniform histology. It is uncommon to find sporadic MMs having different histological features in the same patient. In this case series, of the four patients diagnosed with MM, two patients had different histopathology. An updated review of literature was then performed, providing the different histopathology in those cases. The first case was unique as the patient had an intradiploic meningioma with an intraparenchymal meningioma. Histology found in these cases represented WHO Grade I meningioma. After performing a literature search, it is likely that these tumors do not arise from clonal expansion, but rather have an independent origin.

Abstract

Background: Breathing exercises have been reported to have positive physiological effects on the body. The incidence of hypertension has become a major risk factor for cardiac complications leading to higher morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to study the effect of breathing exercises on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis analyzing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) about the effect of breathing exercises on blood pressure was conducted (PROSPERO Registration ID: CRD42022316413). PubMed, ScienceDirect, WebofScience, and Cochrane Library databases were screened for RCTs from January 2017 to September 2022. The main search terms included “breathing exercise”, “Pranayam”, “Bhramari”, “alternate nostril breathing”, “deep breathing”, “slow breathing”, “hypertension”, and “high blood pressure”. The primary outcome was the value of the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure after the intervention. The effect on heart rate was also analyzed as a secondary outcome. Abstract

Investigations have been made on the structural, morphological, optical, sensing, and aging characteristics of ZnO thin films created on glass substrate using the sol-gel spin coating process. Zinc acetate (ZnAc), ethanol, and stearic acid were employed as the starting materials, solvent, and stabilizer, respectively, to deposit the ZnO thin films on the blue star glass substrate. An UV–visible spectrophotometer is used to study the optical characteristics. With the aid of XRD and FESEM characterization techniques, the structural and morphological properties are studied. The results showed that the characteristics of ZnO thin films were strongly dependent on the annealing temperature. The XRD measurement indicated that the deposited film shows the hexagonal structure and preferential orientation along the (002) crystal plane with a grain size of 78.99 nm. The transmittance value of the ZnO films was relatively high up to 90 %. The result showed that the transmittance value is strongly dependent on the aging time of the sample. The SEM images show that morphology and texture are dependent on the annealing temperature. The SEM image also contains a foreign object or xenolith. The V-I characteristics show nonlinear behavior, and the resistance of the thin film is between 2800 and 5000 MΩ. The CO2 sensing at 450 °C is far better than that of at 750 °C. The response time at 450 °C is 20–40 s, the recovery time is better at 750 °C.

Abstract

Introduction: Globally, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer, accounting for 6.6%of all female cancers, and ranks as the second leading cause of female cancer deaths. Cervical cancer can be avoided if asymptomatic women are screened for precancerous cervical lesions and treated before they progress to invasive disease. Abstract

Ordinary differential equation models are nowadays widely used for the mechanistic description of biological processes and their temporal evolution. These models typically have many unknown and non-measurable parameters, which have to be determined by fitting the model to experimental data. In order to perform this task, known as parameter estimation or model calibration, the modeller faces challenges such as poor parameter identifiability, lack of sufficiently informative experimental data, and the existence of local minima in the objective function landscape. These issues tend to worsen with larger model sizes, increasing the computational complexity and the number of unknown parameters. An incorrectly calibrated model is problematic because it may result in inaccurate predictions and misleading conclusions. For non-expert users, there are a large number of potential pitfalls. Here, we provide a protocol that guides the user through all the steps involved in the calibration of dynamic models. We illustrate the methodology with two models, and provide all the code required to reproduce the results and perform the same analysis on new models. Our protocol provides practitioners and researchers in biological modelling with a one-stop guide that is at the same time compact and sufficiently comprehensive to cover all aspects of the problem., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In the past several subclasses of starlike functions are defined involving real part and modulus of certain expressions of functions under study, combined by way of an inequality. In the similar fashion, we introduce a new class $\mathcal{S}^*_{q}(\alpha)$, consisting of normalized analytic univalent functions $f$ in the open unit disk $\mathbb{D}$, satisfying $$\RE\left(\dfrac{z f'(z)}{f(z)}\right) \geq \left|1+\dfrac{z f''(z)}{f'(z)} -\dfrac{z f'(z)}{f(z)}-\alpha\right| \quad (0 \leq \alpha <1).$$ Evidently, $\mathcal{S}^*_{q}(\alpha) \subset \mathcal{S}^*$, the class of starlike functions. We first establish $\mathcal{S}^*_{q}(\alpha) \subset \mathcal{S}^*(q_\alpha)$, the class of analytic functions $f$ satisfying $z f'(z)/f(z)\prec q_\alpha(z),$ where $q_\alpha$ is an extremal function. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for functions belonging to these classes are obtained in addition to the inclusion and radius problems.
