International audience; Frontal pneumatisation is not present in all primates, and among extant species, ethmoidally-derived frontal sinuses are present only in the genera Pan, Gorilla and Homo. A simple and repeatable method is described here to quantify variation in the shape, size and bilateral variation of the frontal sinuses. This has allowed the first large study of these variables, including analyses of large samples of P. paniscus, P. troglodytes, G. gorilla and of several geographically diverse populations of H. sapiens. Frontal sinus shape and size are potential phylogenetic markers in primate systematics. We suggest that, in contrast to an allometric relationship between endocranial and frontal sinus form in Pan and Gorilla, H. sapiens is autapomorphic in having highly variable, supero-inferiorly large frontal sinuses, whose size is unrestricted by variation in cranial form. However, we also describe differences in frontal pneumatisation between those taxa. H. sapiens differs from the other taxa in having relatively smaller frontal sinuses that are more variable in shape and size.In P. troglodytes, P. paniscus and G. gorilla, the shape and size of frontal pneumatisation correlates positively with the overall size of the braincase. This suggests that the large space available in the bone structures of the non-human primates analysed allows the sinuses to develop under only slight constraint (if any) from surrounding structures. In H. sapiens, a significant correlation is observed between the asymmetry in the anterior extension of the frontal lobes of the brain and the shape and extension of the frontal sinuses. We suggest that the more vertical orientation of the H. sapiens frontal bone, its reduced thickness, the reduction of the supraorbital tori and the increased influence of the frontal lobes appear to have modified the integration between the skull, brain and sinuses in the frontal region in our species compared to our nearest extant relatives. Our results reduce the possibility of a strong functional origin for the variation in size and shape of the frontal sinuses in the primates analysed.

Même si l'auteur de fiction colle au près des connaissances sur la préhistoire, la finalité d'une nouvelle ou d'un roman est bien de conter une histoire. L'image sert la narration et il est délicat pour l'écrivain de laisser des flous sur l'aspect de son héros. Le paléoanthropologue devrait lui, en toute rigueur, chercher à narrer avec précision et justesse la préhistoire, faisant fi des paraboles, se limitant à ce qui est connu. Pas grand-chose en somme, car comment imaginer que nous pourrions vraiment savoir quelle tête avaient nos prédécesseurs datant de la nuit des temps ?

International audience; La paléoneurologie est un domaine complexe et l'étude de la croissance cérébrale chez les espèces humaines fossiles n'en est qu'à ses premiers pas. Le registre fossile disponible est parsemé, incomplet, sujet à interprétation. Il est aussi difficile d'estimer l'âge individuel des spécimens fossiles qui jalonnent notre histoire. Enfin, la forme globale de la boîte crânienne et son volume ne font pas tout, il faut chercher à documenter les variations des détails de la surface cérébrale. Il est ainsi indispensable de se pencher sur les petites traces laissées par le cerveau, en documentant sillons, lobes et aires cérébrales sur l'endocrâne, ainsi que leurs possibles changements au cours du temps. Ce texte récapitule ce que nous savons de la croissance et du développement du cerveau chez nos ancêtres préhistoriques, entre Australopithèques, Homo erectus et Néandertaliens. Les premiers résultats montrent combien le cerveau a varié au sein de l'humanité, que les changements entre les plus jeunes et les adultes au sein de chaque espèce sont autant de réponses diversifiées qu'il nous reste à documenter et à comprendre.

International audience; This study is an extension of that which was undertaken by Balzeau et al. and published in this journal (2017), to reexamine the BH1 cranium which was initially described as Homo rhodesiensis in 1921, but more recently regarded as H. heidelbergensis. It is compared to other Pleistocene specimens of Homo. Balzeau et al. (2017) examined various cranial and intracranial characters, including the conformation of the mid-sagittal plane. They discussed the results of a geometric morphometrics analysis of the cranial vault's profile based on two Principal Components (PC1 and PC2). This note includes the third component (PC3). Taken together, the results can be assessed in the context of potential relationships in temporal and geographical dimensions. Recognizing that boundaries between species are not necessarily clear, we appeal for the adoption of a probabilistic definition of a paleontologi-cal species (sigma taxonomy, as opposed to conventional alpha taxonomy).

International audience; 15 The La Ferrassie 1 (LF1) skeleton, discovered over a century ago, is one of the most 16 important Neandertal individuals in both paleobiological and historical terms. It is indeed 17 among the most complete specimens ever found and it has played an important role in 18 the interpretation of Neandertal anatomy and lifeways. LF1 was found in 1909, and has 19 been described as an adult male, of around 172 cm of stature and a body mass of 85 kg. 20 He was found in what was considered a funerary tip in a level with a chronological range 21 between 40 and 54 thousand years. This individual has been the subject of scientific 22 studies for more than 100 years, and the most recent ones, using cutting-edge imaging 23 technologies have provided additional important paleobiological and taphonomic 24 information. LF1 shows different pathological lesions, including fractures of the clavicle 25 and the femoral trochanter, degenerative pathologies in the spine and evidence of a 26 pulmonary disease (thoracic infection and/or carcinoma) which could have been the 27 cause of death. 28

Although recently the internal structure of the non-supranuchal fossa of Homo sapiens has been described and compared to that observed in the Neandertal suprainiac fossa, until now it has not been examined in any modern human children. In this study, the internal structure of this fossa in the occipital bones of three children (two aged 3‒4 years and one aged 5 years ± 16 months) and one adult individual representing recent Homo sapiens from Australia was analysed and compared to that of the Neandertal suprainiac fossa. In order to analyse the internal composition of the fossae of the examined specimens, initially, high-resolution micro-CT datasets were obtained for their occipital bones; next, 3D topographic maps of the variation in thickness of structural layers of the occipital bones were made and 2D virtual sections in the median region of these fossae were prepared. In the fossa of one immature individual, the thinning of the diploic layer characteristic of a Neandertal suprainiac fossa was firmly diagnosed. The other Neandertal-like trait, concerning the lack of substantial thinning of the external table of the bone in the region of the fossa, was established in two individuals (one child and one adult) due to the observation of an irregular pattern of the thickness of this table in the other specimens, suggesting the presence of an inflammatory process. Our study presents, for the first time, Neandertal-like traits (but not the whole set of features that justifies the autapomorphic status of the Neandertal supraniac fossa) in the internal structure of non-supranuchal fossae of some recent Homo sapiens. We discuss the phylogenetic implications of the results of our analysis and stress the reasons that use of the 3D topographic mapping method is important for the correct diagnosis of Neandertal traits of the internal structure of occipital fossae.

Objectives This study aims to explore the affinities of the Sima de los Huesos (SH) population in relation to Homo neanderthalensis, Arago, and early and contemporary Homo sapiens. By characterizing SH intra‐population variation, we test current models to explain the Neanderthal origins. Materials and Methods Three‐dimensional reconstructions of dentine surfaces of lower first and second molars were produced by micro‐computed tomography. Landmarks and sliding semilandmarks were subjected to generalized Procrustes analysis and principal components analysis. Results SH is often similar in shape to Neanderthals, and both groups are generally discernible from Homo sapiens. For example, the crown height of SH and Neanderthals is lower than for modern humans. Differences in the presence of a mid‐trigonid crest are also observed, with contemporary Homo sapiens usually lacking this feature. Although SH and Neanderthals show strong affinities, they can be discriminated based on certain traits. SH individuals are characterized by a lower intra‐population variability, and show a derived dental reduction in lower second molars compared to Neanderthals. SH also differs in morphological features from specimens that are often classified as Homo heidelbergensis, such as a lower crown height and less pronounced mid‐trigonid crest in the Arago fossils. Discussion Our results are compatible with the idea that multiple evolutionary lineages or populations coexisted in Europe during the Middle Pleistocene, with the SH paradigm phylogenetically closer to Homo neanderthalensis. Further research could support the possibility of SH as a separate taxon. Alternatively, SH could be a subspecies of Neanderthals, with the variability of this clade being remarkably higher than previously thought.

Paleoanthropology is a science in continuous evolution. Knowledge about morphological variation and evolution in hominins is being modified by new discoveries that have been particularly numerous, and sometimes unexpected, over the last 30 years. Moreover, new interdisciplinary approaches have broadened the methodological and analytical possibilities, giving access to previously unavailable information. We detail here the current state of the art concerning paleoanthropology and discuss emerging fields of research and new questions. In this context, we suggest some guidelines for optimal preservation, management and development of collections, including virtual data, while preserving their scientific exploitation.

Née au xixe siècle, l’archéologie a considérablement changé dans les dernières décennies : nouvelles problématiques, nouvelles techniques, arrivée de l’informatique, développement considérable de l’archéologie préventive ont renouvelé en profondeur la manière de faire de l’archéologie. Affaire d’amateurs à ses débuts, elle s’est peu à peu professionnalisée, et aujourd’hui la communauté des archéologues est très spécialisée : archéologues dédiés à une période et une aire culturelle données, chercheurs travaillant sur les environnements et les climats du passé, « dateurs », épigraphistes, archéomètres, anthropologues biologistes, architectes, technologues... L’archéologie occupe une place originale au sein des sciences humaines : elle est au carrefour des disciplines historiques, géographiques et anthropologiques, d’un côté, et des sciences biologiques, physiques, informatiques et chimiques, de l’autre. Les archéologues sont devenus des acteurs économiques importants qui interviennent dans la définition des politiques d’aménagement du territoire et dans la valorisation et la conservation des patrimoines de l’humanité. C’est ce double statut, de scientifique et d’acteur économique, qui rend le nouveau métier d’archéologue à la fois passionnant et plein de contradictions. En dressant un état des lieux de l’archéologie française, cet ouvrage permet de penser l’avenir de la discipline.

Background: Computer Tomography scanning has recently been a tool for diagnosis of normal anatomy and pathology in medical sciences. The CT method has also been applied in ancient human skeletal remains and yield good results for researching the morphology, pathology, and postfossilization bone alteration. Paleoanthropological evidences exhibit that biological remains sometimes are fossilised, thus enabling the pursuit of scientific inquiries in regard to anatomy and biology of ancient humans.Aim of study: to know the morphology and anatomy of the crania including the internal structures that is not feasible' in external bone study, such air pneumatisation, the shape of frontal sinuses, and thickness of the external table, diploe, or the internal table. This study also aims to know the mineralization distribution as a result of fossilization.Material and Method: The material in this study was a fossil crania of Ngandong 7 that belongs to the latest representation of the Homo erectus from Ngandong, East Java, Indonesia. Ng 7 is from the Late Pleistocene period dated about 27,000 to 100,000 years ago. The CT scan was conducted in the QuinzeVingts hospital, Paris, in January 2001. The method used is by applying a medical CT-based data in order to extract the maximum information concerning mineralization, internal cranial features, osseous distribution and disease. An adapted acquisition and analysis protocols are developed from the CT scan.Results: Mineralization of Ng 7 occurred during fossilization, causing the diploe to be thickened than normally in antemortem and prefosilization periods. Because of post-mortem transformation of the individual structures, many slices of CT scans were necessary. The internal structures showed ovoid shape of frontal sinuses, and well developed pneumatisation of the mastoid region. Cracks were detected as a result of postfosilization compressions. Lesions appeared on CT scan just posterior to the bregma in the form of eroded external table. This caused diffuse boundary between external table, diploe, and internal table due to homogenous mineralizationConclusion: It is concluded that the Ngandong 7 Homo erectus shares internal morphological similarities with other Ngandong and Sambungmacan fossils and presents lesions that might have caused by pathology during the life of the individual. The post-mortem history of this fossil appears to be composed of at least two distinct stages with osseous loss and fluvial transport, followed by taphonomic and diagenetic processes.Key words: Ngandong, Homo erectus, computer tomography, paleopathology, post-mortem history
