Abstract

There are a number of approaches to testing General Relativity (GR) on linear scales using parameterized frameworks for modifying cosmological perturbation theory. It is sometimes assumed that the details of any given parameterization are unimportant if one uses it as a diagnostic for deviations from GR. In this brief report we argue that this is not necessarily so. First we show that adopting alternative combinations of modifications to the field equations significantly changes the constraints that one obtains. In addition, we show that using a parameterization with insufficient freedom significantly tightens the apparent theoretical constraints. Fundamentally we argue that it is almost never appropriate to consider modifications to the perturbed Einstein equations as being constraints on the effective gravitational constant, for example, in the same sense that solar system constraints are. The only consistent modifications are either those that grant near-total freedom, as in decomposition methods, or ones which map directly to a particular part of theory space.

Abstract

There is a distinct possibility that current and future cosmological data can be used to constrain Einstein's theory of gravity on the very largest scales. To be able to do this in a model-independent way, it makes sense to work with a general parameterization of modified gravity. Such an approach would be analogous to the Parameterized Post-Newtonian (PPN) approach which is used on the scale of the Solar System. A few such parameterizations have been proposed and preliminary constraints have been obtained. We show that the majority of such parameterizations are only exactly applicable in the quasistatic regime. On larger scales they fail to encapsulate the full behaviour of typical models currently under consideration. We suggest that it may be possible to capture the additions to the `Parameterized Post-Friedmann' (PPF) formalism by treating them akin to fluid perturbations., Comment: 24 pages. Abstract

We introduce $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$, a code designed to run fast, approximate $\textit{N}$-body simulations of non-linear structure formation in reduced Horndeski gravity. Given an input Lagrangian, $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$ dynamically constructs the appropriate field equations and consistently solves for the cosmological background, linear growth, and screened fifth force of that theory. Hence $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$ is a general, adaptable, and useful tool that allows the mildly non-linear regime of many Horndeski theories to be investigated for the first time, at low computational cost. In this work, we first describe the screening approximations and simulation setup of $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$ for theories with Vainshtein screening. We validate the code against traditional $\textit{N}$-body simulations for cubic Galileon gravity, finding $2.5\%$ agreement up to $k_{\rm max}=1.2~h/{\rm Mpc}$. To demonstrate the flexibility of $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$, we additionally run the first simulations of an extended shift-symmetric gravity theory. We use the consistency and modularity of $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$ to dissect how the modified background, linear growth, and screened fifth force all contribute to departures from $\Lambda$CDM in the non-linear matter power spectrum. $\texttt{Hi-COLA}$ can be found at https://github.com/Hi-COLACode/Hi-COLA ., Comment: 51 pages, 20 figures, 5 tables, comments welcome. Abstract

The first direct syntheses, structural characterizations, and reactivity studies of multinuclear iron–phenyl species formed upon reaction of Fe(acac)3 and PhMgBr in THF are described., The first direct syntheses, structural characterizations, and reactivity studies of iron–phenyl species formed upon reaction of Fe(acac)3 and PhMgBr in THF are presented. Reaction of Fe(acac)3 with 4 equiv. PhMgBr in THF leads to the formation of [FePh2(μ-Ph)]22– at –80 °C, which can be stabilized through the addition of N-methylpyrrolidone. Alternatively, at –30 °C this reaction leads to the formation of the tetranuclear iron–phenyl cluster, Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4. Further synthetic studies demonstrate that analogous tetranuclear iron clusters can be formed with both 4-F-PhMgBr and p-tolylMgBr, illustrating the generality of this structural motif for reactions of simple ferric salts and aryl Grignard reagents in THF. Additional studies isolate and define key iron species involved in the synthetic pathway leading to the formation of the tetranuclear iron–aryl species. While reaction studies demonstrate that [FePh2(μ-Ph)]22– is unreactive towards electrophile, Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4 is found to rapidly react with bromocyclohexane to selectively form phenylcyclohexane. Based on this reactivity, a new catalytic reaction protocol has been developed that enables efficient cross-couplings using Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4, circumventing the current need for additives such as TMEDA or supporting ligands to achieve effective cross-coupling of PhMgBr and a secondary alkyl halide.

Abstract

Magnetic circular dichroism studies of Fe(ii) binding to human calprotectin demonstrate the nature of Fe(ii) coordination at two different Fe(ii)-binding sites and provide insight into how Ca(ii) modulates Fe(ii) coordination., Calprotectin (CP) is an abundant metal-chelating protein involved in host defense, and the ability of human CP to bind Fe(ii) in a calcium-dependent manner was recently discovered. In the present study, near-infrared magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy is employed to investigate the nature of Fe(ii) coordination at the two transition-metal-binding sites of CP that are a His3Asp motif (site 1) and a His6 motif (site 2). Upon the addition of sub-stoichiometric Fe(ii), a six-coordinate (6C) Fe(ii) center associated with site 2 is preferentially formed in the presence of excess Ca(ii). This site exhibits an exceptionally large ligand field (10D q = 11 045 cm–1) for a non-heme Fe(ii) protein. Analysis of CP variants lacking residues of the His6 motif supports that CP coordinates Fe(ii) at site 2 by employing six His ligands. In the presence of greater than one equiv. of Fe(ii) or upon mutation of the His6 motif, the metal ion also binds at site 1 of CP to form a five-coordinate (5C) Fe(ii)–His3Asp motif that was previously unidentified in this system. Notably, the introduction of His-to-Ala mutations at the His6 motif results in a mixture of 6C (site 2) and 5C (site 1) signals in the presence of sub-stoichiometric Fe(ii). These results are consistent with a reduced Fe(ii)-binding affinity of site 2 as more weakly coordinating water-derived ligands complete the 6C site. In the absence of Ca(ii), both sites 1 and 2 are occupied upon addition of sub-stoichiometric Fe(ii), and a stronger ligand field is observed for the 5C site. These spectroscopic studies provide further evaluation of a unique non-heme Fe(ii)–His6 site for metalloproteins and support the notion that Ca(ii) ions influence the Fe(ii)-binding properties of CP.

Abstract

A combination of XAS, UV–vis, NMR, and EPR was used to examine the binding of a series of α-hydroxythiones to CoCA. All three appear to bind preferentially in their neutral, protonated forms. Two of the three clearly bind in a monodentate fashion, through the thione sulfur alone. Thiomaltol (TM) appears to show some orientational preference, on the basis of the NMR, while it appears that thiopyromeconic acid (TPMA) retains rotational freedom. In contrast, allothiomaltol (ATM), after initially binding in its neutral form, presumably through the thione sulfur, forms a final complex that is five-coordinate via bidentate coordination of ATM. On the basis of optical titrations, we speculate that this may be due to the lower initial pKaof ATM (8.3) relative to those of TM (9.0) and TPMA (9.5). Binding through the thione is shown to reduce the hydroxyl pKaby ∼0.7 pH unit on metal binding, bringing only ATM’s pKaclose to the pH of the experiment, facilitating deprotonation and subsequent coordination of the hydroxyl. The data predict the presence of a solvent-exchangeable proton on TM and TPMA, and Q-band 2-pulse ESEEM experiments on CoCA + TM suggest that the proton is present. ESE-detected EPR also showed a surprising frequency dependence, giving only a subset of the expected resonances at X-band.

Abstract

Despite its continued observational successes, there is a persistent (and growing) interest in extending cosmology beyond the standard model, $\Lambda$CDM. This is motivated by a range of apparently serious theoretical issues, involving such questions as the cosmological constant problem, the particle nature of dark matter, the validity of general relativity on large scales, the existence of anomalies in the CMB and on small scales, and the predictivity and testability of the inflationary paradigm. In this paper, we summarize the current status of $\Lambda$CDM as a physical theory, and review investigations into possible alternatives along a number of different lines, with a particular focus on highlighting the most promising directions. While the fundamental problems are proving reluctant to yield, the study of alternative cosmologies has led to considerable progress, with much more to come if hopes about forthcoming high-precision observations and new theoretical ideas are fulfilled., Comment: 99 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

Euclid is a European Space Agency medium-class mission selected for launch in 2020 within the cosmic vision 2015–2025 program. The main goal of Euclid is to understand the origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe. Euclid will explore the expansion history of the universe and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and red-shifts of galaxies as well as the distribution of clusters of galaxies over a large fraction of the sky. Although the main driver for Euclid is the nature of dark energy, Euclid science covers a vast range of topics, from cosmology to galaxy evolution to planetary research. In this review we focus on cosmology and fundamental physics, with a strong emphasis on science beyond the current standard models. We discuss five broad topics: dark energy and modified gravity, dark matter, initial conditions, basic assumptions and questions of methodology in the data analysis. This review has been planned and carried out within Euclid’s Theory Working Group and is meant to provide a guide to the scientific themes that will underlie the activity of the group during the preparation of the Euclid mission.
