Abstract

In DIII-D [J. L. Luxon and L. G. Davis, Fusion Technol. 8, 441 (1985)] tokamak plasmas with an internal transport barrier (ITB), the comparison of gyrokinetic linear stability (GKS) predictions with experiments in both low and strong negative magnetic shear plasmas provide improvedunderstanding for electron thermal transport within the plasma. Within a limited region just inside the ITB, the electron temperature gradient (ETG) modes appear to control the electron temperature gradient and, consequently, the electron thermal transport. The increase in the electron temperature gradient with more strongly negative magnetic shear is consistent with the increase in the ETG mode marginal gradient. Closer to the magnetic axis the T3 profile flattens and the ETG modes are predicted to be stable. With additional core electron heating, FIR scattering measurements near the axis show the presence of high k fluctuations (12 cm-1), rotating in the electron diamagnetic drift direction. This turbulence could impact electron transport and possibly also ion transport. Thermal diffusivities for electrons, and to a lesser degree ions, increase. The ETG mode can exist at this wave number, but it is computed to be robustly stable near the axis. Consequently, in the plasmas we have examined, calculations of drift wave linear stability do not explain the observed transport near the axis in plasmas with or without additional electron heating, and there are probably other processes controling transport in this region.. Abstract

Lymphocyte function in rheumatoid arthritis has been assessed by the mixed lymphocyte culture assay. In contrast to previous studies, no difference was found between lymphocytes from healthy volunteers and patients with rheumatoid arthritis. An occasional patient's lymphocytes failed to respond on a given day, but were normal on restudy. All 44 arthritic patient's lymphocytes underwent blast transformation on stimulation with lymphocytes from unrelated donors. By reaction in mixed lymphocyte culture, lymphocytes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis appear to be normal and no different from normal cells studied simultaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

73. Estimating incident terrestrial radiation under all atmospheric conditions.

Abstract

To apply a complete energy balance to the computation of evaporation or snowmelt, radiation data are necessary. At present there is a reasonably adequate network of incident solar radiation stations. However, a network of all-wave radiometers does not exist. It is therefore evident that to apply the energy budget technique to hydrological problems, incident long-wave radiation has to be estimated. An empirical equation is developed by which incident long-wave radiation can be computed from observations of surface air temperature, vapor pressure, and incident solar radiation. Based on comparisons of estimated and observed incident long-wave radiation at six locations, the following conclusions seem warranted: (1) The equation should give results comparable within a few percent on a long-term basis (six months or longer); (2) For any specific atmospheric condition, there seems to be no tendency for the equation to over or under compute or to give increased scatter; (3) When data for periods of six-months or more were analyzed, correlation coefficients of approximately 0.90 were obtained between computed and observed daily radiation values. 74. The effect of turbulent stresses on the experimental determination of a thermal diffusivity due to turbulent transport

Abstract

In plasmas where the transport processes are dominated by turbulence, it is not always straightforward to identify the magnitude of the experimental transport diffusion coefficients. This is primarily due to the fact that with turbulent transport, the separation of the convective and conductive terms depends upon the type of turbulence and/or the model which is used to describe it. For the energy transport it is not just a matter of deciding whether the convection term is &fivehalves; or &threehalves; times the product of the particle flux and the temperature. It is also important to identify turbulence generated convection terms such as heat pinches which can obscure the correct evaluation of the thermal diffusivity. Here we show that inclusion of the turbulence induced stresses into the transport model identifies a heat pinch term and changes the expression for the thermal diffusivity. Comparison with experimental results shows that the new calculated ion thermal diffusivity is no longer less than the neoclassical value even for plasmas with very good ion thermal confinement.

Abstract

Pigs infected with hemolytic F4(+) strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli often develop septicemia secondary to intestinal infection. We tested the hypothesis that inactivation of hemolysin would reduce the ability of F4(+) enterotoxigenic E. coli to cause septicemia in swine following oral inoculation. Inactivation of the hemolysin structural gene (hlyA) did not decrease the incidence of septicemia in the gnotobiotic piglet model.

Abstract

Three antigenic variants of the K88 fimbrial adhesin exist in nature, K88ab, K88ac, and K88ad. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains that produce these fimbriae cause life-threatening diarrhea in some but not all young pigs. The susceptibility of pigs to these organisms has been correlated with the adherence of bacteria to isolated enterocyte brush borders. Whether that correlation holds for multiple K88 variants and over a broad genetic base of pigs is unknown and was the impetus for this study. We also desired to examine the correlation of the expression of a porcine intestinal brush border mucin-type glycoprotein (IMTGP) which binds K88ab and K88ac with the susceptibility of piglets to K88(+) ETEC. Of 31 neonatal gnotobiotic pigs inoculated with K88ab+ or K88ac+ ETEC, 13 developed severe diarrhea, became dehydrated, and died or became moribund. Another pig became severely lethargic but not dehydrated. In vitro brush border adherence analysis was not possible for 10 of the severely ill pigs due to colonization by challenge strains. However, of the 17 pigs that did not become severely ill, 8 (47%) had brush borders that supported the adherence of K88ab+ and K88ac+ bacteria in vitro, suggesting a poor correlation between in vitro brush border adherence and piglet susceptibility to K88(+) ETEC. By contrast, the expression of IMTGP was highly correlated with susceptibility to K88(+) ETEC. Of the 12 pigs that produced IMTGP, 11 developed severe diarrhea. The other pig that produced IMTGP became lethargic but not severely diarrheic. Only 2 of 18 pigs that did not produce IMTGP became severely diarrheic. Colonizing bacteria were observed in histologic sections of intestines from all pigs that expressed IMTGP except for the one that did not develop severe diarrhea. However, colonizing bacteria were observed in histologic sections from only one pig that did not produce IMTGP. The bacterial concentration in the jejuna and ilea of pigs expressing IMTGP was significantly greater (P < 0.005) than that in pigs not expressing IMTGP. These observations suggest the IMTGP is a biologically relevant receptor for K88ab+ and K88ac+ E. coli or a correlate for expression for such a receptor.
