Abstract

Dense WC-x vol% cobalt (5 ≤ x ≤ 20) composites, with WC grain size of ∼1 µm, were synthesized by field-activated and pressureassisted combustion synthesis (FAPACS) within several minutes from elemental powders. Simultaneous synthesis and densification were accomplished under the combined effects of an electric field and mechanical pressure. The effect of cobalt content on the hardness, fracture toughness, and relative density of dense WC-x vol% cobalt composites was investigated. The relative density of the WC-cobalt composites increased with increased cobalt content. Under the application of a 60 MPa pressure and a 3000 A current, the final products had relatively high densities, 99.4%, for WC-20 vol% cobalt. The hardness of the WC-cobalt composites decreased with increased cobalt content, while the fracture toughness increased. The maximum fracture toughness and hardness values obtained were 9.4 MPa·m[sup ½] for the WC-20lvol % cobalt composition and 2014 kg·mm[sup -2] for the WC-5 vol% cobalt composition. Abstract

The article reports on the scannable lens that is capable of an improved resolution developed by Allard Mosk and his colleagues in Amsterdam as of June 2011. The exploitation of the random scattering behavior of a strongly disordered surface rather than a polished surface of a lens is described to be responsible for the improved resolution. The lens and imaging process used by Mosk and his team is detailed. The author suggests extending the scan range and simplifying the sample placement and modulator tuning for the lens' future success.

Abstract

Refereed/Peer-reviewed The elastic and thermal properties of graphene were investigated by illuminating graphen bubbles with a laser spot. Tempertures above 1000°C were obtained in large (>10μm) graphene bubbles. The formation of standing optical waves lead to laser heating depending on the height of the garphene bubble, which results in Raman band oscillations when scanning the laser spot across the bubble. The profile of the bubble under laser illumination can be deduced from the Raman G band oscillations. A distinct swelling at the center of the bubble is observed which is attributed to the strong softening of graphene above 1000°C. From the size and height of the swelling it is deduced that the elastic modulus is reduced by at least 40% at 1000°C. On solving the heat equation for the heat dissipation through the graphene only, analytical expressions are obtained for the isotherms on the bubble for both symmetrical and asymmetrical positions of the laser spot. It was found that a large fraction of the absorbed heat dissipates through the gas in the bubble using the finite volume method. Analytical expressions for the temperature distribution in the bubble are deduced from the numerical results. Heat conduction through the gas in the bubble influences the temperature distribution and needs to be taken into account in the heat dissipation in graphene bubbles.

Abstract

The interaction energy for two adjacent adamantane molecules and that of adamantane molecules encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes are investigated considering only dipole-dipole induced interaction. The Lennard-Jones potential and the continuous approximation are utilised to derive analytical expressions for these interaction energies. The equilibrium distance 3.281 A between two adamantane molecules is determined. The smallest carbon nanotube radius b 0 that can encapsulate the adamantane molecule and the radius of the tube b max that gives the maximum suction energy, linearly depend on the adamantane radius, are calculated. For larger diameter tubes, the off axis position has been calculated, and equilibrium distance between molecule and tube wall is found to be close to the interlayer spacing in graphene.

Both the elastic and van der Waals energies are taken into account, and from these considerations the shape of the curve is determined. By prescribing that the separation distance between the folded graphene in the parallel region is 3.32 Å, an arbitrary constant arising by integrating the Euler-Lagrange equation is determined, and the full parametric representations for the folding conformation are derived. Using typical values of the bending rigidity in the range of 0.800-1.60 eV, the shortest stable folded graphene sheets are required to be at least 6.5-10 nm in length.

Abstract

Raman spectra of large graphene bubbles showed size-dependent oscillations in spectral intensity and frequency, which originate from optical standing waves formed in the vicinity of the graphene surface. At a high laser power, local heating can lead to oscillations in the Raman frequency and also create a temperature gradient in the bubble. Based on Raman data, the temperature distribution within the graphene bubble was calculated, and it is shown that the heating effect of the laser is reduced when moving from the center of a bubble to its edge. By studying graphene bubbles, both the thermal conductivity and chemical reactivity of graphene were assessed. When exposed to hydrogen plasma, areas with bubbles are found to be more reactive than flat graphene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

81. Achieving high strength and high ductility in metal matrix composites reinforced with a discontinuous three-dimensional graphene-like network.

Abstract

Graphene or graphene-like nanosheets have been emerging as an attractive reinforcement for composites due to their unique mechanical and electrical properties as well as their fascinating two-dimensional structure. It is a great challenge to efficiently and homogeneously disperse them within a metal matrix for achieving metal matrix composites with excellent mechanical and physical performance. In this work, we have developed an innovative in situ processing strategy for the fabrication of metal matrix composites reinforced with a discontinuous 3D graphene-like network (3D GN). The processing route involves the in situ synthesis of the encapsulation structure of 3D GN powders tightly anchored with Cu nanoparticles (NPs) (3D GN@Cu) to ensure mixing at the molecular level between graphene-like nanosheets and metal, coating of Cu on the 3D GN@Cu (3D GN@Cu@Cu), and consolidation of the 3D GN@Cu@Cu powders. This process can produce GN/Cu composites on a large scale, in which the in situ synthesized 3D GN not only maintains the perfect 3D network structure within the composites, but also has robust interfacial bonding with the metal matrix. As a consequence, the as-obtained 3D GN/Cu composites exhibit exceptionally high strength and superior ductility (the uniform and total elongation to failure of the composite are even much higher than the unreinforced Cu matrix). To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first report validating that a discontinuous 3D graphene-like network can simultaneously remarkably enhance the strength and ductility of the metal matrix.
