In hyperspectral remote sensing, sensors acquire reflectance values at many different wavelength bands, to cover a complete spectral interval. These measurements are strongly correlated, and no new information might be added when increasing the spectral resolution. Moreover, the higher number of spectral bands increases the complexity of a classification task. Therefore, feature reduction is a crucial step. An alternative would be to choose the required sensor bands settings a priori. In this letter, we introduce a statistical procedure to provide band settings for a specific classification task. The proposed procedure selects wavelength band settings which optimize the separation between the different spectral classes. The method is applicable as a band reduction technique, but it can as well serve the purpose of data interpretation or be an aid in sensor design. Results on a vegetation classification task show an improvement in classification performance over feature selection and other band selection techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A design is reported for a compatible time-sharing system for textile information storage and retrieval. Simultaneous utilization of an IBM 7094 by 25 to 30 independent users is indicated, some solving mathematical problems, others retrieving information. The principal files of the information system permit the recording and retrieval of document data as to authors, subject matter, and other necessary bibliographic infor mation. During posting and updating of the files, a structured thesaurus is employed as an automatic filter for data input.Varied searching techniques are described, some based on subject inquiry, others on authors, references, or citations. Emphasis is given to action by the user to immedi ate computer response to his inquiries. A sample dialogue between man and machine is reported. Many problems areas in the field of textile information are outlined. Input is considered, with emphasis on coordination with other information systems. The needs of users are considered and the nature of indexing to meet these needs. The role of a textile thesaurus in indexing and searching is described. In a previous paper, the importance of lateral pressure in the tension and bending behaviour of yarns was discussed; a theoretical model, which included the effects of bending and torsional rigidities as well as the tensile, shear, and frictional forces, was proposed, and expressions for the lateral pressures were derived. In this sequel, the experimental verification of the previously derived expressions has been carried out on a very simple twisted structure, consisting of two rubber strands. The results obtained support the theoretical predictions of the lateral pressure for the experimental model and lead to the conclusion that, for filaments with significant torsional and bending rigidities, lateral pressures are obtained in the yarn even when there is no significant tension on the individual filaments. An approximate scheme for estimating the lateral pressures in an idealized, close-packed, multilayered continuous-filament yarn is proposed as an extension of the above results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
