- Abstract
The Tristan da Cunha islands are located 450 km east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and 60 km north of the Tristan da Cunha transform fault, and fracture zone system in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands are products of intraplate hotspot volcanism. However, several controversies are associated with theories for the origin of the Tristan da Cunha hotspot. Previous magnetotelluric data 3-D inversion results based on finite-difference algorithm couldn’t image plume-like vertical structure, unlike many geological and geochemical studies (Baba et al., 2017). In this study, we revisit the electrical structure of the region by inverting combined vertical magnetic transfer functions and the MT responses from seafloor stations around the islands and those newly obtained on the Tristan da Cunha and Nightingale islands. The topographic effect is one of the keys to obtaining a more reliable subsurface structure, and therefore, we use two finite-element-based inversion methods of Usui (2021) and Grayver (2015). For inversion analysis, we compared the topographic responses from these methods and a finite-difference-based forward modeling method (Baba & Seama, 2002; Baba & Chave, 2005) used in the previous study (Baba et al., 2017). The responses for sites with minimum topography effects are almost identical from all the three methods except for some sites where difference is observed in shorter periods. This could be due to the difference in the mesh resolution around the sites. The responses for sites with significant topography effects show a reasonable match for the finite-element methods in longer periods. In contrast a significant difference is observed in responses from all three methods for short periods. The comparison of modeled responses proves the applicability of Usui’s inversion scheme to MT data from this region. In the workshop, the inversion results from Usui’s inversion method will be presented.

- Abstract
Influenza antivirals are important tools in our fight against annual influenza epidemics and future influenza pandemics. Combinations of antivirals may reduce the likelihood of drug resistance and improve clinical outcomes. Previously, two hospitalised immunocompromised influenza patients, who received a combination of a neuraminidase inhibitor and baloxavir marboxil, shed influenza viruses resistant to both drugs. Here-in, the replicative fitness of one of these A(H1N1)pdm09 virus isolates with dual resistance mutations (NA-H275Y and PA-I38T) was similar to wild type virus (WT) in vitro, but reduced in the upper respiratory tracts of challenged ferrets. The dual-mutant virus transmitted well between ferrets in an airborne transmission model, but was outcompeted by the WT when the two viruses were co-administered. These results indicate the dual-mutant virus had a moderate loss of viral fitness compared to the WT virus, suggesting that while person-to-person transmission of the dual-resistant virus may be possible, widespread community transmission is unlikely.

- Abstract
Background: OHIP's original seven-domain structure does not fit empirical data, but a psychometrically sound and clinically more plausible structure with the four OHRQoL dimensions Oral Function, Orofacial Pain, Orofacial Appearance, and Psychosocial Impact has emerged. Consequently, use and scoring of available OHIP versions need to be revisited. Aim: We assessed how well the overall construct OHRQoL and its four dimensions were measured with several OHIP versions (20, 19, 14, and 5 items) to derive recommendations which instruments should be used and how to score them. Methods: Data came from the “Dimensions of OHRQoL Project” and used the project's learning sample (5,173 prosthodontic patients and general population subjects with 49-item OHIP data). We computed correlations among OHIP versions’ summary scores. Correlations between OHRQoL dimensions, on one hand, and OHIP versions’ domain scores or OHIP-5′s items, on the other hand, were also computed. OHIP use and scoring recommendations were derived for psychometrically solid but also practical OHRQoL assessment. Results: Summary scores of 5-, 14-, 19- and 49-item versions correlated highly (r = 0.91–0.98), suggesting similar OHRQoL construct measurement across versions. The OHRQoL dimensions Oral Function, Orofacial Pain, Orofacial Appearance, and Psychosocial Impact were best measured by the OHIP domain scores for Physical Disability, Physical Pain, Psychological Discomfort, and Handicap, respectively. Conclusion: Recommendations were derived which OHIP should be preferably used and how OHIP versions should be scored to capture the overall construct and the dimensions of OHRQoL. Psychometrically solid and practical OHRQoL assessment in all settings across all oral health conditions can be achieved with the 5-item OHIP.

- Abstract
The study examined empirically gender differentials in income inequality, among crayfish harvesting households in some selected State of Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. A multi-stage and stratified random sampling techniques was employed in selecting a total of 409 (300 males and 109 females) crayfish harvesters. A structured questionnaire and interview schedule survey was used for the study. Descriptive statistical tools (percentages, frequencies and means) and inferential statistics (gini coefficient and Lorenz curve) were used to analyze the data of the study. The results revealed that income inequality of male crayfish harvesters (0.64) was higher than that of females (0.58). However, the pooled result showed that the level of income inequality among the crayfish harvesters in the areas was generally high (0.63). The study recommended that government should ensure gender equality and equity in the provision, allocation and distribution of productive (harvesting) resources and services, women should be given unrestricted access to productive resources, be made to have fair share in the family wealth, be integrated in policy formulation and implementation on community matters, and be given power to take decision in the sector among others.

- Abstract
The study examined the technical efficiency in arable crop production under Goronyo irrigation project of Sokoto State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to sample 246 farmers and the limited cost-route approach was used with the aid of questionnaire. Stochastic frontier production function (SFPF) model was used in estimating farm level technical efficiency. The study also revealed the average technical efficiency index of rice, maize, cowpea and tomato farms to be 0.87, 0.79, 0.45 and 0.76, respectively and that technical inefficiency effect existed among the farmers. Estimates of technical efficiency of farmers revealed that average sampled farms operate 13%, 21%, 55% and 24% below the frontier output levels for rice, maize, cowpea and tomato farms under consideration. Farmers are fairly efficient technically in deriving maximum output from rice, maize and tomato farm and less technically efficient in the production of cowpea. Extension contact was one of the major factor that influences technical efficiency in the area, therefore, sustained farmers extension contact should be encourage by increasing frequency of contact where new techniques will be disseminated to the farmers to improve the use of available resource.

The dielectric constant, impedance spectroscopy, ac conductivity, and dc conductivity of Ni-doped diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are reported within a wide temperature and frequency window. The dc conductivity increases with temperature, possessing different activation regions. At higher temperatures, a reversible semiconductor to metal transition is observed in the doped samples. Both the ac and dc conductivities are observed to increase with Ni doping concentration. However, the dc self-bias plays an important role in conductivity. The ac conductivity follows Jonscher's power law. The frequency exponent study shows that the ac conduction is governed by the correlated barrier hopping model. The grain boundary resistance is found to be higher than the grain resistance. According to the electric modulus study, the undoped DLC deviates from the ideal Debye behavior, with the deviation being higher in the high-frequency region. The current-voltage characteristics show a nonlinear hysteresis behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Mediterranean region is distinguished by an architectural heritage of great richness and diversity. This book focuses on the preservation and enhancement of this heritage. As the building and construction sector is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, there is much effort to replace traditional materials with environmentally friendly materials. Great efforts are made to prioritize the use of eco-materials instead of conventional materials. There is a trend to use local materials, such as earth, stone or wood, due to their sustainability and highly favorable environmental footprint. Emigration has become a significant issue that cannot be overlooked globally as it is germane in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of ending poverty. This study assessed the effects of emigration on the poverty status of farming households in Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 297 farmers were selected randomly from four Local Government Areas across the state. Structured interview schedule was used to obtain primary data from the farmers. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics, Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) index and probit regression model. The poverty classification revealed that 35.23% of the farmers were poor and 64.77% were non-poor. The estimated FGT indices for poverty incidence, depth and severity were 0.3523, 0.2669 and 0.0713 respectively. Probit regression analysis showed that emigration status of the farmers at p≤0.05 level of probability had significant positive effect on their poverty status. Other covariates: remittance (p≤0.01), household size (p≤0.01), years of education (p≤0.10), farm income (p≤0.01) and off-farm income (p≤0.01) also had significant effects on the porvety status of the farming households. The study concluded that emigration possess the potential to enhance poverty alleviation among the farming households in the area. Nonetheless, poverty remains a major issue in the area that cannot be overlooked by the government.

- Abstract
Baloxavir is approved in several countries for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza in otherwise-healthy and high-risk patients. Treatment-emergent viruses with reduced susceptibility to baloxavir have been detected in clinical trials, but the likelihood of widespread occurrence depends on replication capacity and onward transmission. We evaluated the fitness of A/H3N2 and A/H1N1pdm09 viruses with the polymerase acidic (PA) I38T-variant conferring reduced susceptibility to baloxavir relative to wild-type (WT) viruses, using a competitive mixture ferret model, recombinant viruses and patient-derived virus isolates. The A/H3N2 PA/I38T virus showed a reduction in within-host fitness but comparable between-host fitness to the WT virus, while the A/H1N1pdm09 PA/I38T virus had broadly similar within-host fitness but substantially lower between-host fitness. Although PA/I38T viruses replicate and transmit between ferrets, our data suggest that viruses with this amino acid substitution have lower fitness relative to WT and this relative fitness cost was greater in A/H1N1pdm09 viruses than in A/H3N2 viruses.

- Abstract
Objectives: To compare the frequency of patients' oral health problems and prevention needs among Slovenian and international dentists with the aim to validate the four oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) dimensions across six clinical dental fields in all World Health Organization (WHO) regions. Methods: An anonymous electronic survey in the English language was designed using Qualtrics software. A probability sampling for Slovenia and a convenience sampling strategy for dentist recruitment was applied for 31 countries. Dentists engaged in six dental fields were asked to categorize their patients' oral health problems and prevention needs into the four OHRQoL dimensions (Oral Function, Orofacial Pain, Orofacial Appearance, and Psychosocial Impact). Proportions of patients' problems and prevention needs were calculated together with the significance of Slovenian and international dentists' differences based on dental fields and WHO regions. Results: Dentists (n=1,580) from 32 countries completed the survey. There were 223 Slovenian dentists (females: 68%) with a mean age (SD) of 41 (10.6) years and 1,358 international dentists (females: 51%) with a mean age (SD) of 38 (10.4). Pain-related problems and prevention needs were the most prevalent among all six dental fields reported by dentists; Slovenian (37%) and 31 countries (45%). According to Cohen, differences between Slovenia, the broader European Region, and 31 countries were considered non-significant (<0.1). Conclusion: According to the dentists' responses, the frequency of patients' oral health problems and prevention needs are proportionate between Slovenia and 31 countries, regionally and globally. The four OHRQoL dimensions can be considered universal across all dental fields.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the effects of denosumab treatment on the joint destruction of Japanese females with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibodies. Materials and Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study included 56 patients treated with denosumab and 50 patients treated with bisphosphonate. All participants were positive for anti-CCP antibodies. All patients also had a history of osteoporosis treatment with bisphosphonate, which was either continued or switched to 60 mg of subcutaneous denosumab injection every 6 months. To assess the progression of joint destruction, hand and foot radiographs were taken, and changes in modified total Sharp score (mTSS), erosion score (ERO) and joint space narrowing score (JSN) were evaluated at 12 months and 24 months. The changes in BMD of the lumbar spine and hip were also assessed at 12 months. Results: At 12 months, there were significant differences in the change of ERO (p = 0.015) and mTSS (p = 0.01). Similarly, there were significant differences in the change of ERO (p = 0.013) and mTSS (p = 0.003) at 24 months. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in the changes of JSN and clinical parameters. There were significant differences in the changes in BMD in the femoral neck (p = 0.011) and total hip (p = 0.012).Conclusion: Denosumab treatment was effective for the inhibition of bone erosion progression, and it contributes to the treatment of osteoporosis and prevention of destructive arthritis in patients with RA.

- Abstract
Influenza viruses cause seasonal outbreaks and pose a continuous pandemic threat. Although vaccines are available for influenza control, their efficacy varies each season and a vaccine for a novel pandemic virus manufactured using current technology will not be available fast enough to mitigate the effect of the first pandemic wave. Antivirals can be effective against many different influenza viruses but have not thus far been used extensively for outbreak control. Baloxavir, a recently licensed antiviral drug that targets the influenza virus endonuclease, has been shown to reduce virus shedding more effectively than oseltamivir, a widely used neuraminidase inhibitor drug. Thus it is possible that treatment with baloxavir might also interrupt onward virus transmission. To test this, we utilized the ferret model, which is the most commonly used animal model to study influenza virus transmission. We established a subcutaneous baloxavir administration method in ferrets which achieved similar pharmacokinetics to the approved human oral dose. Transmission studies were then conducted in two different locations with different experimental setups to compare the onward transmission of A(H1N1)pdm09 virus from infected ferrets treated with baloxavir, oseltamivir or placebo to naïve sentinel ferrets exposed either indirectly in adjacent cages or directly by co-housing. We found that baloxavir treatment reduced infectious viral shedding in the upper respiratory tract of ferrets compared to placebo, and reduced the frequency of transmission amongst sentinels in both experimental setups, even when treatment was delayed until 2 days post-infection. In contrast, oseltamivir treatment did not substantially affect viral shedding or transmission compared to placebo. We did not detect the emergence of baloxavir-resistant variants in treated animals or in untreated sentinels. Our results support the concept that antivirals which decrease viral shedding could also reduce influenza transmi

The neurohypophysial hormone oxytocin (OXT) is synthesized in the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei (PVN and SON, respectively). Recently, some studies have considered that OXT is important in sensory modulation, and that OXT protein is upregulated by acute and chronic nociception. However, the mechanism by which OXT is upregulated in neurons is unknown. In the present study, we examined the excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) in OXT-ergic neurons in the PVN in an adjuvant arthritis (AA) rat model, a model of chronic inflammation, using whole cell patch clamping. Transgenic rats expressed OXT and the monomeric red fluorescent protein 1 (mRFP1) fusion gene to visualize the OXT-ergic neurons, and the OXT-mRFP1 transgenic rat model of AA was developed by injection of the heat-killed Mycobacterium butyricum . Furthermore, the feedback system of synthesized OXT was also examined using the OXT receptor antagonist (L-368,899). We found that the frequency of miniature (m) EPSCs and spontaneous (s) EPSCs in OXT-mRFP1 neurons in the PVN were significantly increased in AA rats. Furthermore, L-368,899 dose-dependently increased the frequency of mEPSCs and sEPSCs in OXT-ergic neurons. Following bath application of the GABA A receptor antagonist picrotoxin and cannabinoid receptor 1 antagonist AM 251, L-368,899 still increased the frequency of mEPSCs. However, following the bath application of the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor (L-NAME), L-368,899 did not alter the mEPSC frequency. Thus, it is suggested that OXT-ergic neuron activity is upregulated via an increase in glutamate release, and the upregulated OXT neurons have a feedback system with released OXT. It is possible that NO but not GABA may contribute to the feedback system of OXT neurons in chronic inflammation.
