Macrostructures and inclusions are both vital for slabs because the quality of slabs is largely affected by them. However, the relationship between macrostructures and inclusions in the thickness direction of the slab is still unclear. Hence, in this paper, the relationship between macrostructures and inclusions was revealed by laboratory experiments and theoretical calculations. The laboratory experiments included carbon and sulfur content testing, direct reading spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and automatic inclusion scanning. The experimental results showed that the distribution of macrostructures was symmetrical from the inner and outer arc to the center. From the edge to the center of the slab, the variation in macrostructures was columnar crystal zone (CZ)→columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET)→equiaxed crystal zone (EZ). Furthermore, the content of sulfur and manganese first decreased and then increased from the inner arc to the outer arc. The number density and area fraction of MnS inclusions in different macrostructures were CZ > CET > EZ. The average size of MnS in different macrostructures was CZ > EZ > CET. Moreover, the morphology of MnS inclusions was ellipse and rod in CZ, irregular dendrite in CET, and multilateral in EZ. Additionally, theoretical calculation results showed the maximum precipitation and initial precipitation temperature of MnS inclusions in different macrostructures were CZ > EZ > CET. The adsorption of toxic metals onto iron oxides is a prevalent geochemical process in natural environments. Organic acids are known to modify the adsorption features of toxic ions through either competitive or cooperative effects. Nowadays, the toxic metal adsorption influenced by organic acids on iron oxides with varying facet exposures is not fully understood. This study explored how L-Aspartic acid (LA) influences Cr(VI) adsorption on two different exposure facets of lepidocrocite through batch adsorption experiments, in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, and 2D-COS analysis. The results reveal that LA competes for available binding sites on lepidocrocite, consequently inhibiting the adsorption of Cr(VI). Rod-shaped lepidocrocite (R-LEP) owns more (001) facets and shows stronger Cr(VI) adsorption and LA competition than plate-like lepidocrocite (P-LEP), which mainly has (010) facets. The data for Cr(VI) uptake on both P-LEP and R-LEP within the effect of LA are well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting chemical interaction as the dominant process for Cr(VI) coordination on lepidocrocite. Cr(VI) ions favor interaction with R-LEP over P-LEP, forming inner-sphere complexes on (001) facets. Concurrently, LA's carboxyl groups can compete for the active sites on the lepidocrocite surfaces, engaging in anion exchange with hydroxyl groups, and forming outer-sphere and inner-sphere structures. This competitive effect is particularly pronounced in the R-LEP system. Accurately controlling the temperature of the converter end is a crucial element of the steelmaking process. To enhance the accuracy of predicting the converter end temperature, we propose a hybrid model that utilizes principal component analysis (PCA) and snake optimization algorithm (SOA) in conjunction with a backpropagation algorithm (BP) neural network. The 16 parameters for smelting in converter steelmaking were reduced using principal component analysis to remove shared features. The nine principal components derived from this analysis were then used as input variables for an optimized BP neural network. An optimization algorithm was then employed to refine the initialized weights and thresholds of the BP neural network. The impact of neuron node quantity in the hidden layer on the BP neural network was examined. Results show that the ideal BP neural network is achieved with 19 neuron nodes in the hidden layer. Compared with ordinary BP neural network, PCA-BP neural network and SOA-BP neural network, the model proposed in this study can predict the end temperature of converter most accurately. In the temperature error range of ±10 °C and ±15 °C, the prediction accuracy of the model is 93% and 96%, respectively. Meanwhile, the model has been effectively applied in the industrial production of a steel plant in China. The results show that the prediction results of the model are in good agreement with the actual production data in the field. In previous studies, the mushy zone constant was assigned a fixed value or a value associated with dendrite characteristics at room temperature. However, elucidating the constitutive behaviors of mushy dendrites at high temperatures using solid dendrite characteristics at room temperature poses challenges. In this study, a numerical model was constructed to investigate the effects of variable mushy zone constants on fluid flow and heat transfer in the mold. The results revealed that "Zone Z‐1/2" exhibited a thinner solidified shell compared with the other zones, indicating a close correlation between heat transfer and thickness differences. Under default simulation conditions, the liquid steel cooled rapidly, leading to the dissipation of superheat. The mushy zone exhibited a wide range, with almost no pure liquid phase present in the mold. In cases 2, 3, and 4 within "Zone Z‐1/2", the average thickness of the solidified shell gradually increased during solidification, indicating the absence of evident remelting phenomena in the mold. As the variable mushy zone constants increased, the local temperature gradient increased, while the local cooling rate decreased. The oxygen content of M2 high-speed steel has not been intentionally controlled in industrial production through secondary refinement in vacuum furnaces. However, a lower oxygen content has a significant effect on the cleanliness, toughness, and addition of rare-earth elements to M2 high-speed steel. The changes in total oxygen content controlled by vacuum carbon deoxidation (VCD) treatment and inclusion evolution were investigated in M2 high-speed steel to understand the effects of carbon on dissolved oxygen and oxides in the carbon–oxygen (C-O) reaction process. Furthermore, the microstructure and properties of M2 high-speed steel caused by vacuum insulation and the role of reducing oxygen content in rare-earth alloying were briefly demonstrated. The results showed that the [O%] decreased from 30 ppm to 3 ppm in a vacuum at holding times above 25 min through the C-O reaction, leading to an inclusion reduction of approximately 70%. In the case of [O%] = 3 ppm in M2 high-speed steel, the addition of rare-earth elements has a greater effect on the inclusion characteristics. Lowering the oxygen content of M2 high-speed steel improves cleanliness and plays a significant role in rare-earth alloying. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic behavior of nonmetallic inclusions at the bubble–steel interface is a key factor contributing to the formation of large‐sized inclusions or clustered particles and is particularly important for the production of high‐quality‐oriented silicon steel. In this study, high‐temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy is employed for in situ observation of the agglomeration behavior of Al2O3 inclusions of varying sizes. The critical distance of attraction decreases with the decrease in inclusion size. The effects of particle size, distance, surface tension, density, and different types of inclusions on the capillary force are explored in detail using the Kralchevsky–Paunov model. In the model results, it is highlighted that the degree of influence among the factors affecting the capillary force decreases in the following order: contact angle > size > distance > density > surface tension. Furthermore, the observed results are compared with the model calculation results. The trends of the model calculations and the experimental results show good agreement, but most of the experimental values are higher than the theoretical values. The errors primarily stem from inclusion shape, interference from other inclusion forces, and interactions between the crucible wall and inclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biochar, an eco-friendly, porous carbon-rich material, is widely studied for immobilizing heavy metals in contaminated environments. This study prepared tobacco stalks, a typical agricultural waste, into biochar (TSB) modified by hydroxyapatite (HAP) at co-pyrolysis temperatures of 350 °C and 550 °C to explore its Cd(II) adsorption behavior and relevant mechanisms. XRD, SEM–EDS, FTIR, and BET analyses revealed that HAP successfully incorporated onto TSB, enriching the surface oxygen-containing functional groups (P–O and carboxyl), and contributing to the enhancement of the specific surface area from 2.52 (TSB350) and 3.63 m2/g (TSB550) to 14.07 (HAP–TSB350) and 18.36 m2/g (HAP–TSB550). The kinetics of Cd(II) adsorption onto TSB and HAP–TSB is well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Isotherm results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II) on HAP–TSB350 and HAP–TSB550 were approximately 13.17 and 14.50 mg/g, 2.67 and 9.24 times those of TSB350 and TSB550, respectively. The Cd(II) adsorption amounts on TSBs and HAP–TSBs increased significantly with increasing pH, especially in HAP–TSB550. Ionic strength effects and XPS analysis showed that Cd(II) adsorption onto HAP–TSBs occurred mainly via electrostatic interaction, cation exchange with Ca2+, complexation with P–O and –COOH, and surface precipitation. Zr has been widely used in high-quality steel due to its strong deoxidizing capacity and ability of improve performance of steel. ZrO2–Al2O3 inclusions with core-shell structure were observed in this study. The structure, electronic properties, and energy changes of ZrO2 and ZrO2–Al2O3 systems were studied based on first principles calculation. It indicates that ZrO2 can be used as the heterogeneous nucleation core of Al2O3. Al atoms were preferentially adsorbed on the bridge site of ZrO2 (001) and then form the ZrO2–Al2O3 interface. The template effect of ZrO2 was nine adsorption atomic layers, among which layers 1–5 was a coherent epitaxial layer, layers 5–9 was the transition layer, and the atomic ratio was 3:2. The growth mechanism of Al2O3 on ZrO2 surface was discussed. The results help understand the formation of inclusion at atomic scale and find ways to control the characteristics of inclusion in steel with Zr treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of reduction process, especially the reduction zone on the internal quality of continuous casting high carbon steel billets was studied by shifting active reduction rolls while at same casting condition, as well as identical reduction amount and gradient. In the present study, the heredity of the main internal defects emerged in billets with different reduction zones was also investigated after subsequent rolling process in terms of severity, regional distribution, and microstructure formation as well. For the investigated high carbon steel grade, the evolution of the internal quality in relation to the macrosegregation, internal crack and porosity illustrates the effectiveness and importance of applying mechanical reduction for the homogeneity improvement from the cast billet to the as-rolled wire rod product. Meanwhile, it is also suggested by the investigation the necessity of fine control for the implement of mechanical reduction process, or it may not have sufficient positive impact on homogeneity and compactness of billet and as-rolled product, but some other undesirable defects may even be induced by mechanical reduction. Introduction More than 70% of people experience a traumatic event in their lifetime. (1) However, excessive traumatic experiences may disrupt the normal neural basis of memory, resulting in the formation [...], Background: Fear extinction alone does not erase the original fear memory. Interventions that enhance extinction can be beneficial for the treatment of fear-related disorders. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has been shown to improve memory performance. The present study examined the effects of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) on fear extinction and the return of fear memory in humans. Methods: Ninety-one young healthy volunteers underwent 3 experiments using a randomized controlled experimental design. Participants first acquired fear conditioning, after which they received 30 Hz iTBS before and after extinction training. The iTBS was applied to 1 of 2 targets: the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and the vertex (control). Fear responses were measured 24 hours later and 1 month later. Results: During the spontaneous recovery and reinstatement tests, iTBS of the left dlPFC before and after extinction significantly reduced fear response, whereas iTBS of the vertex had no effect on fear memory performance. This combined approach had a relatively long-lasting effect (i.e., at least 1 month). Limitations: We did not explore the effect of iTBS of the dlPFC on the expression of fear without extinction training. The neural mechanisms of iTBS with fear extinction to inhibit the fear response are unclear. Our results are preliminary and should be interpreted with caution. Conclusion: The present results showed that 30 Hz iTBS of the left dlPFC enhanced retention of fear extinction. Our study introduces a new intervention for fear memory and suggests that the left dlPFC may be a treatment target for fear-related disorders.
