Abstract

The low-lying dipole strength in the Zr-90,Zr-94 nuclei was investigated via (p, p'gamma) at 80 MeV and (alpha, alpha'gamma) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the gamma-decay. For Zr-94 these are the first data for both reactions and for Zr-90 these are the first data with (p, p'gamma) and the first ones at high resolution for (alpha, alpha'gamma). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (gamma, gamma') data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes. DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1(-) states in Zr-90,Zr-94. The (p, p'gamma) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (alpha, alpha'gamma) data. The isoscalar strength for Zr-90 was found to exhaust 20 +/- 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of Zr-94, a strength of 9 +/- 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV. Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (alpha, alpha'gamma). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1(-) states below the particle binding energy. Abstract

We report the first measurement of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moment of the exotic nucleus Sn-133 by high-resolution laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE/CERN. These, in combination with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations, demonstrate the single-particle character of the ground state of this short-lived isotope and, hence, the doubly-magic character of its immediate neighbor Sn-132. The trend of the electromagnetic moments along the N = 83 isotonic chain, now enriched with the values of tin, are discussed on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations.

Abstract

Second-order processes in physics is a research topic focusing attention from several fields worldwide including, for example, non-linear quantum electrodynamics with high-power lasers, neutrinoless double-$��$ decay, and stimulated atomic two-photon transitions. For the electromagnetic nuclear interaction, the observation of the competitive double-$��$ decay from $^{137\mathrm{m}}$Ba has opened up the nuclear structure field for detailed investigation of second-order processes through the manifestation of off-diagonal nuclear polarizability. Here we confirm this observation with an $8.7��$ significance, and an improved value on the double-photon versus single-photon branching ratio as $2.62\times10^{-6}(30)$. Our results, however, contradict the conclusions from the original experiment, where the decay was interpreted to be dominated by a quadrupole-quadrupole component. Here, we find a substantial enhancement in the energy distribution consistent with a dominating octupole-dipole character and a rather small quadrupole-quadrupole element in the decay, hindered due to an evolution of the internal nuclear structure. The implied strongly hindered double-photon branching in $^{137\mathrm{m}}$Ba opens up the possibility of the double-photon branching as a feasible tool for nuclear-structure studies on off-diagonal polarizability in nuclei where this hindrance is not present., 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tabels

Abstract

The Li7(γ,t)He4 ground state cross section was measured for the first time using monoenergetic γ rays with energies between 4.4 and 10 MeV at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source. The reaction is important for the primordial Li problem and for testing our understanding of the mirror α-capture reactions H3(α,γ)Li7 and He3(α,γ)Be7. Although over the last 30 years most measurements of the H3(α,γ)Li7 reaction have concentrated in an energy range below Eγ=3.65 MeV, measurements at higher energies could potentially restrict the extrapolation to astrophysically important energies. The experimental arrangement for measuring the Li7(γ,t)He4 reaction included a large-area silicon detector array and several beam characterization instruments. The experimental astrophysical S factor of H3(α,γ) calculated from the present data was fitted using the R-matrix formalism. The results are in disagreement with previous experimental measurements in the same energy range but the extrapolated S factor agrees with the potential model calculation and lower energy experimental data.

Abstract

An overview of the main directions of present-day studies with quasimonochromatic γ beams are discussed with an emphasis on the research opportunities which will be offered at the Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) facility at Magurele near Bucharest in Romania. Experiments with γ beams at the extremes of high temperature and high neutron-to-proton ratios are outlined. Some of the experimental setups for nuclear structure, reaction and astrophysics studies, which are available at ELI-NP, are described. Perspectives for studies of exotic nuclei within the Gamma Factory experiment at CERN are discussed. The expected fission-fragment yields at the Gamma Factory are presented. Abstract

Nuclear mass is a key property of atomic nuclei. The accurate determination of nuclear masses provides information for the nuclear shell structure and nuclear deformations. The FRS Ion Catcher experimental setup at GSI, Darmstadt was used to perform mass measurements of 252Cf fragments using a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Abstract

The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) Pan-European initiative represents a major step forward in quest for extreme electromagnetic fields. The Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) laboratory is one of the three pillars of the ELI project, that aims to use such extreme electromagnetic fields for nuclear physics and quantum electrodynamics research. At ELI-NP two ten petawatt high-power laser systems together with a very brilliant narrow-width γ beam are the main research tools. Here the current status of the project and the experimental program related to nuclear research, which is under preparation at ELI-NP, are presented.

Abstract

Here we report on the characterization of one of the large-volume LaBr$_{3}$:Ce detectors for the ELIGANT project at ELI-NP. The main focus of this work is the response function for high-energy $��$ rays of such detectors. In particular, we compare a selection of unfolding methods to resolve small structures in $��$-ray spectra with high-energies. Three methods have been compared using $��$-ray spectra with energies up to 12 MeV obtained in an experiment at the 3 MV Tandetron\texttrademark\ facility at IFIN-HH. The results show that the iterative unfolding approach gives the best qualitative reproduction of the emitted $��$-ray spectrum. Furthermore, the correlation fluctuations in high-energy regime from the iterative method are two orders of magnitude smaller than when using the matrix inversion approach with second derivative regularization. In addition, the iterative method is computationally faster as it does not contain large matrix inversions. The matrix inversion method does, however, give more consistent results over the full energy range and in the low-statistics limit. Our conclusion is that the performance of the iterative approach makes it well suitable for semi-online analysis of experimental data. These results will be important, both for experiments with the ELIGANT setup, and for on-line diagnostics of the energy spread of the $��$-ray beam which is under implementation at ELI-NP., 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2(-) state in Pb-207 has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a Pb-208 beam impinging on a Mo-100 enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt gamma rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3, 19/2(-) -> 13/2(+)) = 40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in Pb-207. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in Pb-207 is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6(+) state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation. Abstract

The use of multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions to produce neutronrich nuclei in the heavy region has received an increased attention in the last decade. The feasibility of employing such reactions at the FRS Ion Catcher facility at GSI and the IGISOL facility at JYFL is studied using a combination of theoretical calculations and experiment simulations. The reactions are computed within a Langevin-type model, and the Geant program is used to simulate the transport of the resulting products within the experimental setups of the above-mentioned facilities. Abstract

International audience; We report on a new measurement of the g factor of the (13/2(+)) isomeric state in the neutron-rich nucleus Cu-69. This study demonstrates the possibility of obtaining considerable nuclear spin alignment for multi-quasiparticle states in single-nucleon removal reactions. The time-dependent perturbed angular distribution (TDPAD) method was used to extract the gyromagnetic factor of the (13/2(+)) [T-1/2 = 351(14) ns] isomeric state of Cu-69. Its g factor was obtained as g(13/2(+)) = 0.248( 9). The experimentally observed spin alignment for the state of interest was deduced as A = -3.3(9)%.

Abstract

Isomer shifts have been determined in 111–129Cd by high-resolution laser spectroscopy at CERN ISOLDE. The corresponding mean square charge-radii changes, from the 1/2+ and the 3/2+ ground states to the 11/2− isomers, have been found to follow a distinct parabolic dependence as a function of the atomic mass number. Since the isomers have been previously associated with simplicity due to the linear mass dependence of their quadrupole moments, the regularity of the isomer shifts suggests a higher order of symmetry affecting the ground states in addition. A comprehensive description assuming nuclear deformation is found to accurately reproduce the radii differences in conjunction with the known quadrupole moments.
