Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
Effective communication is paramount for the inclusion of deaf individuals in society. However, persistent communication barriers due to limited Sign Language (SL) knowledge hinder their full participation. In this context, Sign Language Recognition (SLR) systems have been developed to improve communication between signing and non-signing individuals. In particular, there is the problem of recognizing isolated signs (Isolated Sign Language Recognition, ISLR) of great relevance in the development of vision-based SL search engines, learning tools, and translation systems. This work proposes an ISLR approach where body, hands, and facial landmarks are extracted throughout time and encoded as 2-D images. These images are processed by a convolutional neural network, which maps the visual-temporal information into a sign label. Experimental results demonstrate that our method surpassed the state-of-the-art in terms of performance metrics on two widely recognized datasets in Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), the primary focus of this study. In addition to being more accurate, our method is more time-efficient and easier to train due to its reliance on a simpler network architecture and solely RGB data as input., Comment: 12 pages

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. The discovery of this system implies an increase in the expected rate of neutron star-black hole mergers with electromagnetic counterparts and provides further evidence for compact objects existing within the purported lower mass gap., Comment: 45 pages (10 pages author list, 13 pages main text, 1 page acknowledgements, 13 pages appendices, 8 pages bibliography), 17 figures, 16 tables. Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

68. An origami Universal Turing Machine design

Computer Science - Computational Complexity - Abstract
It has been known since 1996 that deciding whether a collection of creases on a piece of paper can be fully folded flat without causing self-intersection or adding new creases is an NP-Hard problem (Bern and Hayes). In their proof, a binary state was implemented as a pleat, with the state corresponding to the pleat layering order; states then interact via pleat intersections. Building on some of the machinery of their result, we will present a method for constructing an origami NAND logic gate, leading to a theoretical origami Universal Turing Machine., Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of 8OSME

Mathematics - Number Theory - Abstract
It is well known that the set of origami constructible numbers is larger than the classical straight-edge and compass constructible numbers. However, the Huzita-Justin-Hatori origami constructible numbers remain algebraic so that the transcendental number $\pi$ can only be approximated using a finite number of straight line folds. Using these methods we give a convergent sequence for folding $\pi$ as well as other methods to approximate $\pi$. Folding along curved creases, however, allows for the construction of transcendental numbers. We here give a method to construct $\pi$ exactly by folding along a parabola, and we discuss generalizations for folding other transcendental numbers such as $\Gamma(1/4)$., Comment: Corrected typos in previous version

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
When using single photons and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for quantum information processing, quantum states can be encoded using either qubits or qudits. Qudits are more efficient in terms of requiring less photons (in principle, only one) to encode the state, while qubits are more efficient in terms of the number of waveguides used to reach the same dimension $d$, as qudits need $d$ waveguides in comparison to the $2\log_2d$ waveguides used by qubits. For dimensions large enough for useful tasks, this would indicate that qubits are clearly the best option, as other resources scale at least polynomially with the number of waveguides in the PIC. The comparison, however, is not so direct. We consider the task of quantum state preparation, which is relevant for variational quantum algorithms, for instance. For n qubits, this task requires the circuit to have a number of Controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates that is exponential in n. Since both implementations suffer from an exponential resource cost, a more detailed evaluation is required. We compare the qubit and qudit approaches in terms of the amount of electrical energy that must be spent, on average, to program a photonic circuit to perform quantum state preparation. We find that if a PIC with a fully reconfigurable array of interferometers is to be used, using qubits requires more energy than using qudits. We show, however, that a circuit with dedicated CNOT blocks has a much smaller energy consumption, remaining viable even at large qubit numbers, where more important bottlenecks come into play, such as the probabilistic nature of the CNOT gates., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Computer Science - Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing - Abstract
Because Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) works with a massive amount of data, its execution requires much time and computational resources, being restricted to large-scale computer systems such as supercomputers. Techniques such as FWI adapt well to parallel computing and can be parallelized in shared memory systems using the application programming interface (API) OpenMP. The management of parallel tasks can be performed through loop schedulers contained in OpenMP. The dynamic scheduler stands out for distributing predefined fixed-size chunk sizes to idle processing cores at runtime. It can better adapt to FWI, where data processing can be irregular. However, the relationship between the size of the chunk size and the runtime is unknown. Optimization techniques can employ meta-heuristics to explore the parameter search space, avoiding testing all possible solutions. Here, we propose a strategy to use the Parameter Auto Tuning for Shared Memory Algorithms (PATSMA), with Coupled Simulated Annealing (CSA) as its optimization method, to automatically adjust the chunk size for the dynamic scheduling of wave propagation, one of the most expensive steps in FWI. Since testing each candidate chunk size in the complete FWI is unpractical, our approach consists of running a PATSMA where the objective function is the runtime of the first time iteration of the first seismic shot of the first FWI iteration. The resulting chunk size is then employed in all wave propagations involved in an FWI. We conducted tests to measure the runtime of an FWI using the proposed autotuning, varying the problem size and running on different computational environments, such as supercomputers and cloud computing instances. The results show that applying the proposed autotuning in an FWI reduces its runtime by up to 70.46% compared to standard OpenMP schedulers.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We present a scheme that utilizes an ion confined within a bi-dimensional trap to simulate a quantum Otto heat engine whose working substance is a two-level system. In this scheme, the electronic component of the ion (the two-level system) can interact with effective heat reservoirs of different types. We specifically focus on effective thermal reservoirs (those with positive temperatures), effective heat reservoirs with apparent negative temperatures, and effective squeezed thermal reservoirs. We show how to generate these effective reservoirs and provide numerical results to illustrate the applicability of the presented scheme. Finally, considering the same types of effective heat reservoirs, we briefly discuss the simulation of a quantum Otto heat engine where a quantum harmonic oscillator serves as the working substance.

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Magnetic skyrmions are nano-scale magnetic whirls that can be driven by currents via spin torques. They are promising candidates for spintronic devices such as the racetrack memory, where a motion along the uniform current is typically desired. However, for spin torque nano-oscillators in Corbino disks, the goal is to achieve a circular motion, perpendicular to the radially applied current. As we show, based on analytical calculations and micromagnetic simulations, Bloch skyrmions engage in a circular motion with frequencies in the MHz range when driven by spin-orbit torques. In contrast, N\'eel skyrmions get stuck at the edges of the disk. Our analysis reveals that the antagonistic dynamics between Bloch- and N\'eel-type magnetic textures arise from their helicity. Furthermore, we find that skyrmioniums, which are topologically trivial variations of skyrmions, move even faster and allow an increase in the current density without being pushed toward the edges of the disk. When driven by spin-transfer torques instead, Bloch and N\'eel skyrmions no longer exhibit different dynamics. Instead, they move along a circular trajectory due to the skyrmion Hall effect caused by their topological charge. Consequently, the topologically trivial skyrmioniums inevitably become trapped at the disk edge in this scenario. To provide a comprehensive understanding, our study also examines currents applied tangentially, further enriching our insights into skyrmion dynamics and appropriate current injection methods for skyrmion-based devices., Comment: Marie Sk{\l}odowska-Curie Actions, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020; Project acronym SPEAR; Grant Agreement No. 955671

BACKGROUND: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a progressive immune-mediated liver disease, for which no medical therapy has been shown to slow disease progression. However, the horizon for new therapies is encouraging, with several innovative clinical trials in progress. Despite these advancements, there is considerable heterogeneity in the outcomes studied, with lack of consensus as to what outcomes to measure, when to measure and how to measure. Furthermore, there has been a paradigm shift in PSC treatment targets over recent years, moving from biochemistry-based endpoints to histological assessment of liver fibrosis, imaging-based biomarkers and patient-reported outcome measures. The abundance of new interventional trials and evolving endpoints pose opportunities for all stakeholders involved in evaluating novel therapies. To this effect, there is a need to harmonise measures used in clinical trials through the development of a core outcome set (COS). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Synthesis of a PSC-specific COS will be conducted in four stages. Initially, a systematic literature review will be performed to identify outcomes previously used in PSC trials, followed by semistructured qualitative interviews conducted with key stakeholders. The latter may include patients, clinicians, researchers, pharmaceutical industry representatives and healthcare payers and regulatory agencies, to identify additional outcomes of importance. Using the outcomes generated from the literature review and stakeholder interviews, an international two-round Delphi survey will be conducted to prioritise outcomes for inclusion in the COS. Finally, a consensus meeting will be convened to ratify the COS and disseminate findings for application in future PSC trials. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval has been granted by the East Midlands-Leicester Central Research Ethics Committee (Ref: 24/EM/0126) for this study. The COS from this study will be widely disseminated including publication in peer-reviewed journals, international conferences, promotion through patient-support groups and made available on the Core Outcomes Measurement in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) database. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: 1239.

Mathematics - Probability - Abstract
We introduce new method for generating correlated or uncorrelated Bernoulli random variables by using the binary expansion of a continuous random variable with support on the unit interval. We show that when this variable has a symmetric probability density function around 12 , its binary expansion provides equiprobable bits over {0, 1}. In addition we prove that when the random variable is uniformly distributed over [0, 1], its binary expansion generates independent Bernoulli random variables. Moreover, we give examples where, by choosing some parameterized nonuniform probability density functions over [0, 1], samples of Bernoulli variables with specific correlation values are generated., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures
