51. Cranial remolding orthosis for children with deformational skull deformities: A systematic review on the factors affecting success and duration of treatment

Abstract: Deformational plagiocephaly, deformational brachycephaly, and deformational scaphocephaly are the most common types of skull deformities during the first year of life. Using a cranial remolding orthosis (CRO) can have an important role in achieving a satisfactory level of improvement in symmetry and proportion of the deformed skulls. However, there is no consensus on the most important parameters for the success or length of treatment with a CRO. In this study, we did a systematic literature review in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE on January 2023. Titles/abstracts of the found studies were screened by two independent reviewers. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included articles. The best evidence synthesis was considered to determine the strength of the reported factors. A total of 25 articles with an accumulated sample of 7594 participants were included. Nine predictive factors, including age at initiation of CRO treatment, CRO compliance, deformity severity, deformity type, torticollis, gestational age, gestational type, delivery method, and developmental delay, were considered for CRO treatment length or success. Moderate evidence suggests that CRO treatment length is linked to a patient's age at the start of treatment and the deformity severity. Moreover, treatment success is correlated with a patient's age at the start of treatment, CRO compliance, and deformity severity. Moderate evidence indicates that there is no relationship between the presence of torticollis and gestational age with CRO treatment success.

52. Reasons and Risk Factors for Same-Day Discharge Following Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Background: Nowadays, emphasis is being given to same-day discharge (SDD) following total joint arthroplasty. Unfortunately, despite a high degree of success, there are instances of failed SDD. Therefore, we aim to conduct a systematic review to evaluate factors contributing to failed SDD after total joint arthroplasty. Methods: Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Google Scholar were searched. The Newcastle Ottawa score was used for the quality assessment of selected studies. All the studies were evaluated through a narrative synthesis. A total of 11 studies evaluating 157,045 patients were selected. The mean age of patients was 62.5 years. Results: Elderly patients (odds ratio [OR] 1.01 to OR 3.13), women (OR 1.63 to OR 2.87), non-white race (OR 1.31 to OR 2.19), hypertension (OR 1.11 to OR 1.41), diabetes (OR 1.25 to OR 4.06), cardiovascular diseases (OR 1.67 to OR 12.06), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 1.30 to OR 1.96), bleeding disorders (OR 1.32 to OR 1.52), obesity (OR 1.35 to OR 3.30), steroid use (OR 1.23 to OR 1.52), late procedure start time (OR 1.22 to OR 5.16), higher postoperative pain (OR 1.93 to OR 5.85), high American Society of Anesthesiologists score (OR 0.92 to OR 3.50) were major predictors of failed SDD. Conclusions: Through our review, we highlighted that elderly patients, women, non-white race, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bleeding disorders, obesity, steroid use, late procedure start time, higher postoperative pain, and high American Society of Anesthesiologists score were major predictors of a failed SDD. Many factors evaluated in our study were presented in one or two studies only; therefore, high-quality studies are required to supplement our findings.

Abstract: Observations of astrophysical transients have brought many novel discoveries and provided new insights into physical processes at work under extreme conditions in the Universe. Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observations of variable objects require dedicated procedures and follow-up systems capable of digesting and reacting to external alerts to execute coordinated follow-up campaigns. The main functions of such follow-up systems are the processing, filtering, and ranking of the incoming alerts, the fully automated rapid execution of the observations according to an observation strategy tailored to the instrument, and real-time data analysis with feedback to the operators and other instruments. H.E.S.S. has been searching for transient phenomena since its inauguration in 2003. In this paper, we describe the transients follow-up system of H.E.S.S. which became operational in 2016. The system allows H.E.S.S. to conduct a more versatile, optimised, and largely autonomous transient follow-up program, combining all major functionalities in one systematic approach. We describe the design, central functionalities, and interfaces of the follow-up system in general and its three main components in detail: the Target of Opportunity (ToO) alert system, the data acquisition and central control system, and the real-time analysis. We highlight architectural decisions and features that enable fully automatic ToO follow-up and indicate key performance metrics of the sub-systems. We discuss the system's capabilities and highlight the need for a fine-tuned interplay of the different sub-systems in order to react quickly and reliably. Lessons learned from the development, integration, and operation of the follow-up system are reviewed in light of new and large science infrastructures and associated challenges in this exciting new era of inter-operable astronomy., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Abstract Although many viral infections are linked to the development of neurological disorders, the mechanism governing virus-induced neuropathology remains poorly understood, particularly when the virus is not directly neuropathic. Using a mouse model of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, we found that the severity of neurological disease did not correlate with brain ZIKV titers, but rather with infiltration of bystander activated NKG2D+CD8+ T cells. Antibody depletion of CD8 or blockade of NKG2D prevented ZIKV-associated paralysis, suggesting that CD8+ T cells induce neurological disease independent of TCR signaling. Furthermore, spleen and brain CD8+ T cells exhibited antigen-independent cytotoxicity that correlated with NKG2D expression. Finally, viral infection and inflammation in the brain was necessary but not sufficient to induce neurological damage. We demonstrate that CD8+ T cells mediate virus-induced neuropathology via antigen-independent, NKG2D-mediated cytotoxicity, which may serve as a therapeutic target for treatment of virus-induced neurological disease.

Abstract: Recurrent Novae are repeating thermonuclear explosions in the outer layers of white dwarfs, due to the accretion of fresh material from a binary companion. The shock generated by ejected material slamming into the companion star's wind, accelerates particles to very-high-energies. We report very-high-energy (VHE, $\gtrsim100$\,GeV) gamma rays from the recurrent nova RS\,Ophiuchi up to a month after its 2021 outburst, using the High Energy Stereoscopic System. The VHE emission has a similar temporal profile to lower-energy GeV emission, indicating a common origin, with a two-day delay in peak flux. These observations constrain models of time-dependent particle energization, favouring a hadronic emission scenario over the leptonic alternative. Abstract: Observations with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) have enhanced our knowledge of nearby supernova (SN) remnants with ages younger than 500 years by establishing Cassiopeia A and the remnant of Tycho's SN as very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources. The remnant of Kepler's SN, which is the product of the most recent naked-eye supernova in our Galaxy, is comparable in age to the other two, but is significantly more distant. If the gamma-ray luminosities of the remnants of Tycho's and Kepler's SNe are similar, then the latter is expected to be one of the faintest gamma-ray sources within reach of the current generation IACT arrays. Here we report evidence at a statistical level of 4.6 sigma for a VHE signal from the remnant of Kepler's SN based on deep observations by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) with an exposure of 152 hours. The measured integral flux above an energy of 226 GeV is ~0.3% of the flux of the Crab Nebula. The spectral energy distribution (SED) reveals a gamma-ray emitting component connecting the VHE emission observed with H.E.S.S. to the emission observed at GeV energies with Fermi-LAT. The overall SED is similar to that of the remnant of Tycho's SN, possibly indicating the same non-thermal emission processes acting in both these young remnants of thermonuclear SNe., Comment: Published in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Abstract: We report on a search for persistent radio emission from the one-off Fast Radio Burst (FRB) 20190714A, as well as from two repeating FRBs, 20190711A and 20171019A, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. For FRB 20171019A we also conducted simultaneous observations with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in very high energy gamma rays and searched for signals in the ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray bands. For this FRB, we obtain a UV flux upper limit of 1.39x10^-16 erg/cm^-2/s/Amstrong, X-ray limit of ~ 6.6x10^-14 erg/cm^-2/s and a limit on the very-high-energy gamma-ray flux (Phi) (E > 120 GeV) < 1.7 x 10^-12 erg/cm^-2/s. We obtain a radio upper limit of ~15 microJy/beam for persistent emission at the locations of both FRBs 20190711A and 20171019A, but detect diffuse radio emission with a peak brightness of ~53 microJy/beam associated with FRB 20190714A at z = 0.2365. This represents the first detection of the radio continuum emission potentially associated with the host (galaxy) of FRB 20190714A, and is only the third known FRB to have such an association. Given the possible association of a faint persistent source, FRB 20190714A may potentially be a repeating FRB whose age lies between that of FRB 20121102A and FRB 20180916A. A parallel search for repeat bursts from these FRBs revealed no new detections down to a fluence of 0.08 Jy ms for a 1 ms duration burst., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: We report on the observations of four well-localized binary black hole (BBH) mergers by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) during the second and third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, O2 and O3. H.E.S.S. can observe $\mathrm{20\,deg^2}$ of the sky at a time and follows up gravitational-wave (GW) events by ``tiling'' localization regions to maximize the covered localization probability. During O2 and O3, H.E.S.S. observed large portions of the localization regions, between 35\% and 75\%, for four BBH mergers (GW170814, GW190512\_180714, GW190728\_064510, and S200224ca). For these four GW events, we find no significant signal from a pointlike source in any of the observations, and set upper limits on the very high energy ($>$100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission. The 1-10 TeV isotropic luminosity of these GW events is below $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at the times of the H.E.S.S. observations, around the level of the low-luminosity GRB 190829A. Assuming no changes are made to how follow-up observations are conducted, H.E.S.S. can expect to observe over 60 GW events per year in the fourth GW observing run, O4, of which eight would be observable with minimal latency.

64. Integrating Hyperspectral Reflectance-Based Phenotyping and SSR Marker-Based Genotyping for Assessing the Salt Tolerance of Wheat Genotypes under Real Field Conditions

Abstract: Wheat breeding programs are currently focusing on using non-destructive and cost-effective hyperspectral sensing tools to expeditiously and accurately phenotype large collections of genotypes. This approach is expected to accelerate the development of the abiotic stress tolerance of genotypes in breeding programs. This study aimed to assess salt tolerance in wheat genotypes using non-destructive canopy spectral reflectance measurements as an alternative to direct laborious and time-consuming phenological selection criteria. Eight wheat genotypes and sixteen F8 RILs were tested under 150 mM NaCl in real field conditions for two years. Fourteen spectral reflectance indices (SRIs) were calculated from the spectral data, including vegetation SRIs and water SRIs. The effectiveness of these indices in assessing salt tolerance was compared with four morpho-physiological traits using genetic parameters, SSR markers, the Mantel test, hierarchical clustering heatmaps, stepwise multiple linear regression, and principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.001) among RILs/cultivars for both traits and SRIs. The heritability, genetic gain, and genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variability for most SRIs were comparable to those of measured traits. The SRIs effectively differentiated between salt-tolerant and sensitive genotypes and exhibited strong correlations with SSR markers (R2 = 0.56–0.89), similar to the measured traits and allelic data of 34 SSRs. A strong correlation (r = 0.27, p < 0.0001) was found between the similarity coefficients of SRIs and SSR data, which was higher than that between measured traits and SSR data (r = 0.20, p < 0.0003) based on the Mantel test. The PCA indicated that all vegetation SRIs and most water SRIs were grouped with measured traits in a positive direction and effectively identified the salt-tolerant RILs/cultivars. The PLSR models, which were based on all SRIs, accurately and robustly estimated the various morpho-physiological traits compared to using individual SRIs. The study suggests that various SRIs can be integrated with PLSR in wheat breeding programs as a cost-effective and non-destructive tool for phenotyping and screening large wheat populations for salt tolerance in a short time frame. This approach can replace the need for traditional morpho-physiological traits and accelerate the development of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes.

65. Assessing Heat Stress Tolerance of Wheat Genotypes through Integrated Molecular and Physio-Biochemical Analyses

Abstract: Heat as an abiotic stress significantly impairs the sustainable productivity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). To determine the tolerance of genotypes to heat stress, a comprehensive approach should be used that integrates simultaneous phenotyping and genotyping analyses. The aim of this study is to identify local heat-tolerant genotypes using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and evaluate the selected genotypes under field conditions for their tolerance to heat stress. Of the 12 SSR markers that showed polymorphism, eight were associated with six important traits. The use of hierarchical cluster analysis (HC) based on SSR markers led to the identification of 13 genotypes that showed varying results and were grouped into three distinct heat tolerance classes: tolerant (T), moderately tolerant (MT), and sensitive (S). The results showed that heat stress had a significant effect on 19 traits under this study, with significant variation in tolerance to heat stress between genotypes. The tolerant genotypes exhibited a range of average thousand-kernel weight (TKW) values between 40.56 and 44.85, while the sensitive genotype (Yecora Rojo) had an average TKW of 35.45. Furthermore, the tolerant genotypes showed two to three times higher levels of antioxidants compared to the sensitive genotypes when exposed to heat stress. Among the traits analyzed, six showed a favorable combination of high heritability (>60%) and genetic gain (>20%). Through the integration of principal component analysis and stepwise multiple linear regression, it was determined that six traits (grain yield, 1000-kernel weight, plant height, intercellular carbon dioxide, flag leaf area, and grain filling duration) revealed differences between the 13 genotypes. HC analysis of the six traits resulted in the same division of genotypes into three main categories as observed in an HC analysis based on SSR markers. It is worth noting that Saudi wheat, including KSU106, KSU105, and KSU115 as local genotypes, in addition to the 16HTWYT-22 genotype, showed higher heat tolerance compared to the other genotypes tested, indicating its potential suitability for agriculture in Saudi Arabia. These results contribute to breeding programs focused on developing heat-tolerant wheat varieties and accelerate progress in wheat productivity improvement programs.

68. Use of Mobile Learning Applications as an Innovative Method for the Teaching of Biochemistry

Abstract: Background: Traditional teaching methods of biochemistry provide effective tools for knowledge transmission, but are considered less engaging with students. Smartphone applications may provide suitable alternatives to compensate for the shortcomings of traditional teaching methods. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of smartphone applications as a complementary method for learning biochemistry. Methodology: A total of 32 students, from the College of Applied Medical Sciences, University of Bisha, Saudi Arabia, were recruited. Students used available mobile applications, and their performance was monitored through assignments, presentations, practical evaluations, and pre- and post-tests. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to survey the students' perceptions. It was validated by students enrolled at the College of Applied Medical Science, interns, and medical educators. It was checked for item appropriateness and comprehensiveness using face and content validity. Results: Around 75% of the students found the mobile applications useful in learning biochemistry, 50% believed that they were easy to use and 100% believed that the breadth of the knowledge presented by these applications was comprehensive. The pedagogical effect of the use of mobile applications in learning biochemistry showed statistically significant differences in student performances post-use and pre-use of mobile applications with P values of 0.000, 0.028, 0.023, and 0.000 for tests, assignments, practical evaluation, and presentations, respectively. Conclusion: Students have a positive perception of the use of mobile applications, as it has significantly improved their academic performance in biochemistry.

Abstract: Magnetar hyperflares are the most plausible explanation for fast radio bursts (FRB) -- enigmatic powerful radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures. The first observational evidence for this scenario was obtained in 2020 April when a FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma-ray repeater SGR\,1935+2154. The FRB was preceded by two gamma-ray outburst alerts by the BAT instrument aboard the Swift satellite, which triggered follow-up observations by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR\,1935+2154 for 2 hr on 2020 April 28. The observations are coincident with X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Fermi-GBM, thus providing the first very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of a magnetar in a flaring state. High-quality data acquired during these follow-up observations allow us to perform a search for short-time transients. No significant signal at energies $E>0.6$~TeV is found and upper limits on the persistent and transient emission are derived. Abstract: The results of gamma-ray observations of the binary system HESS J0632+057 collected during 450 hours over 15 years, between 2004 and 2019, are presented. Data taken with the atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS at energies above 350 GeV were used together with observations at X-ray energies obtained with Swift-XRT, Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Suzaku. Some of these observations were accompanied by measurements of the H{\alpha} emission line. A significant detection of the modulation of the VHE gamma-ray fluxes with a period of 316.7+-4.4 days is reported, consistent with the period of 317.3+-0.7 days obtained with a refined analysis of X-ray data. The analysis of data of four orbital cycles with dense observational coverage reveals short timescale variability, with flux-decay timescales of less than 20 days at very high energies. Flux variations observed over the time scale of several years indicate orbit-to-orbit variability. The analysis confirms the previously reported correlation of X-ray and gamma-ray emission from the system at very high significance, but can not find any correlation of optical H{\alpha} parameters with X-ray or gamma-ray energy fluxes in simultaneous observations. The key finding is that the emission of HESS J0632+057 in the X-ray and gamma-ray energy bands is highly variable on different time scales. The ratio of gamma-ray to X-ray flux shows the equality or even dominance of the gamma-ray energy range. This wealth of new data is interpreted taking into account the insufficient knowledge of the ephemeris of the system, and discussed in the context of results reported on other gamma-ray binary systems., Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Astro-COLIBRI is a novel tool that evaluates alerts of transient observations in real time, filters them by user-specified criteria, and puts them into their multiwavelength and multimessenger context. Through fast generation of an overview of persistent sources as well as transient events in the relevant phase space, Astro-COLIBRI contributes to an enhanced discovery potential of both serendipitous and follow-up observations of the transient sky. The software's architecture comprises a Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface, both a static and a real-time database, a cloud-based alert system, as well as a website and apps for iOS and Android as clients for users. The latter provide a graphical representation with a summary of the relevant data to allow for the fast identification of interesting phenomena along with an assessment of observing conditions at a large selection of observatories around the world., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

83. Level of and factors associated with foot self‐care among people with diabetes in Idlib Province of Northwest Syria: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Abstract Background and aims Diabetic foot and lower limb problems are among the most neglected complications during the Syrian armed conflict due to the absence of a functioning health infrastructure, including early detection and timely management of limb‐threatening wounds. This study aimed to determine self‐reported diabetes‐related foot disease (DRFD), adherence to recommended foot self‐care (FSC) practices, and associated factors among people with diabetes in war‐torn Northwest Syria (NWS). Methods This was a cross‐sectional study conducted at six primary care clinics in Idlib, NWS, between March 27 and April 17, 2022, utilizing the validated interviewer‐administered Diabetes Foot Disease and Foot Care Questionnaire. Data on demographic characteristics, DRFD, and FSC practices were collected. FSC score was determined by adding the points from all 12 FSC items, with a maximum score of 48, and were categorized into very poor (≤12), poor (13–24), moderate (25–36), and good (37–48). A convenience sample of 331 consecutive Syrians, aged ≥18 years, with diabetes, were invited. Multiple linear regression was used to identify variables associated with FSC practices. Results A total of 328 patients completed the questionnaire (response rate: 99.1%). The overall FSC score was average (mean total score 27.24, SD 7.03). Over one‐third (37.8%) had a very poor/poor score, 50.3% had an average score, and 11.9% had a good score. Household income/month of ≥51 USD (β = 2.6, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]:1.06–4.1, p = 0.001) and diabetes duration of ≥10 years (β = 1.8, 95% Cl: 0.2–3.4, p = 0.027) significantly predicted better FSC practice. Conclusion A significant proportion of participants had inadequate adoption FSC behaviors. Higher socioeconomic status was associated with better FSC practices. Future research should evaluate diabetic foot education and professional foot care in this population.

84. Aeluropus littoralis stress-associated protein promotes water deficit resilience in engineered durum wheat

Abstract: Global climate change-related water deficit negatively affect the growth, development and yield performance of multiple cereal crops, including durum wheat. Therefore, the improvement of water-deficit stress tolerance in durum wheat varieties in arid and semiarid areas has become imperative for food security. Herein, we evaluated the water deficiency resilience potential of two marker-free transgenic durum wheat lines (AlSAP-lines: K9.3 and K21.3) under well-watered and water-deficit stress conditions at both physiological and agronomic levels. These two lines overexpressed the AlSAP gene, isolated from the halophyte grass Aeluropus littoralis, encoding a stress-associated zinc finger protein containing the A20/AN1 domains. Under well-watered conditions, the wild-type (WT) and both AlSAP-lines displayed comparable performance concerning all the evaluated parameters. Ectopic transgene expression exerted no adverse effects on growth and yield performance of the durum wheat plants. Under water-deficit conditions, no significant differences in the plant height, leaf number, spike length, and spikelet number were observed between AlSAP-lines and WT plants. However, compared to WT, the AlSAP-lines exhibited greater dry matter production, greater flag leaf area, improved net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency. Notably, the AlSAP-lines displayed 25 % higher grain yield (GY) than the WT plants under water-deficit conditions. The RT-qPCR-based selected stress-related gene (TdDREB1, TdLEA, TdAPX1, and TdBlt101-2) expression analyses indicated stress-related genes enhancement in AlSAP-durum wheat plants under both well-watered and water-deficit conditions, potentially related to the water-deficit resilience. Collectively, our findings support that the ectopic AlSAP expression in durum wheat lines enhances water-deficit resilience ability, thereby potentially compensate for the GY loss in arid and semi-arid regions.

Abstract: This study aimed to assess physical activity levels during 3 school days among first cycle students and its relationship with lower limb muscle strength. Twenty-eight students from the Governor of Muscat were participated in this study, (age: 11.8±0.3 years, height: 9.0±148 cm, mass Body: 14.5±34.8 kg, BMI: 5.3±19.2 kg.m-2 To assess physical activity levels, the ActiGraph GT3X device was used for 3 school days during the week (from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, daily). All participating performed two tests of lower limb muscle strength (CMJ - FCM). Study results showed that the average physical activity levels of students during 3 school days were (455.9± 56.7minutes) and (26.3±6.6 minutes) for both sedentary physical behavior (SPA) and high-intensity physical activity (VPA), respectively. The results also revealed that the level of moderate and vigorous physical activity level (MVPA) during 3 days of school reached (67.9 ±17.01minutes), which is approximately (22.6 minutes per day), meaning that there was a noticeable decrease in the levels of physical activity practiced during school days (3 days). per week for first cycle students. The application of vermicompost has been proven to be an efficient approach to combat the drought-induced growth and developmental limitation of wheat plants and to promote cost-effective and sustainable crop production. A wire-house pot experiment was conducted to examine the effects of cow manure vermicompost on morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes of wheat seedlings under different deficit water levels. The treatments were included: three drought levels; control (70 % of field capacity (FC, D0)), mild drought (45 % of FC, D1), and severe drought (30 % of FC, D1), four vermicompost application rates; control, 4, 6 and 8 t ha−1 (designated as VT0, VT1, VT2 and VT3, respectively), and two contrasting wheat cultivars; Faisalabad-08 (drought tolerant) and Galaxy-13 (drought sensitive). Results showed that vermicompost application improved crop performance under control and drought stress conditions where VT2 depicted significantly higher values in both cultivars, particularly under drought stress. Under severe drought, VT2 increased root fresh weight by 6.13 and 10.63 %, shoot fresh weight by 15.62 % and 23.58 %, root dry weight by 40.81 % and 50 % and shoot dry weight by 20.68 and 22.22 % in Faisalabad-08 and Galaxy-13, respectively. Also, VT2-treated seedlings exhibited significantly higher gas exchange attributes, chlorophyll pigments and antioxidative enzyme activities under drought conditions. Among cultivars, Faisalabad-08 was found comparatively more drought tolerant than Galaxy-13. Our findings demonstrated that drought severely affects morphological, physiological, and biochemical attributes of wheat. However, soil applied vermicompost proved beneficial for improved morphophysiological and biochemical traits under the regime of drought stress in wheat.

Abstract: Since 2015, the direct detection of Gravitational Waves (GWs) became possible with ground-based interferometers like LIGO and Virgo. GWs became the center of attention of the astronomical community and electromagnetic observatories took a particular interest in follow-up observations of such events. The main setback of these observations is the poor localization of GW events. In fact, GW localization uncertainties can span tens to hundreds of deg$^{2}$ the sky even with the advanced configurations of current GW interferometers. In this contribution, we present five follow-up strategies developed for the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) and assess their performances. We show how a 2D and 3D galaxy targeted search approach exploiting the integral probability inside the instruments field of view are best suited for medium field of view instruments like H.E.S.S. We also develop an automatic response scheme within the H.E.S.S. Transient Follow-up system that is optimized for fast response and is capable of responding promptly to all kind of GW alerts. GW events are filtered by the developed scheme and prompt and afterglow observations are automatically scheduled. The H.E.S.S. response latency to prompt alerts is measured to be less than 1 minute. Abstract: The recent detection of a very high energy (VHE) emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) above 100 GeV performed by the MAGIC and H.E.S.S. collaborations, has represented a significant, long-awaited result for the VHE astrophysics community. Although these results' scientific impact has not yet been fully exploited, the possibility to detect VHE gamma-ray signals from GRBs has always been considered crucial for clarifying the poorly known physics of these objects. Furthermore, the discovery of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves associated with astrophysical sources have definitively opened the era of multi-messenger astrophysics, providing unique insights into the physics of extreme cosmic accelerators. In the near future, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will play a major role in these observations. Within this framework, the Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) will be the instruments best suited to significantly impact on short time-scale transients follow-up thanks to their fast slewing and large effective area. The observations of the early emission phase of a wide range of transient events with good sensitivity below 100 GeV will allow us to open new opportunities for time-domain astrophysics in an energy range not affected by selective absorption processes typical of other wavelengths. 90. Observation of burst activity from SGR1935+2154 associated to first galactic FRB with H.E.S.S

Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain. Abstract: We analyzed 252 hours of High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) observations towards the supernova remnant (SNR) LMC N132D that were accumulated between December 2004 and March 2016 during a deep survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud, adding 104 hours of observations to the previously published data set to ensure a > 5 sigma detection. To broaden the gamma-ray spectral coverage required for modeling the spectral energy distribution, an analysis of Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data was also included. We unambiguously detect N132D at very high energies (VHE) with a significance of 5.7 sigma. We report the results of a detailed analysis of its spectrum and localization based on the extended H.E.S.S. data set. The joint analysis of the extended H.E.S.S and Fermi-LAT data results in a spectral energy distribution in the energy range from 1.7 GeV to 14.8 TeV, which suggests a high luminosity of N132D at GeV and TeV energies. We set a lower limit on a gamma-ray cutoff energy of 8 TeV with a confidence level of 95%. The new gamma-ray spectrum as well as multiwavelength observations of N132D when compared to physical models suggests a hadronic origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission. SNR N132D is a VHE gamma-ray source that shows a spectrum extending to the VHE domain without a spectral cutoff at a few TeV, unlike the younger oxygen-rich SNR Cassiopeia A. The gamma-ray properties of N132D may be affected by an interaction with a nearby molecular cloud that partially lies inside the 95% confidence region of the source position. Abstract: We present here, follow-up observations of four Binary black hole BBH events performed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray domain during the second and third LIGO/Virgo observation runs. Detailed analyses of the obtained data did not show significant VHE emission. We derive integral upper limit maps considering a generic $E^{-2}$ source spectrum in the most sensitive H.E.S.S energy interval ranging from 1 to 10 TeV. We also consider Extragalactic Background Light absorption effects and derive integral upper limits over the full accessible energy range. We finally derive upper limits of the VHE luminosity for each event and compare them with the expected VHE emission from GRBs. These comparisons allow us to assess the H.E.S.S. gravitational wave follow-up strategies. Abstract: The detection of electromagnetic (EM) emission following the gravitational wave (GW) event GW170817 opened the era of multi-messenger astronomy with GWs and provided the first direct evidence that at least a fraction of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are progenitors of short Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). GRBs are also expected to emit very-high energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) photons, as proven by the recent MAGIC and H.E.S.S. observations. One of the challenges for future multi-messenger observations will be the detection of such VHE emission from GRBs in association with GWs. In the next years, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be a key instrument for the EM follow-up of GW events in the VHE range, owing to its unprecedented sensitivity, rapid response, and capability to monitor a large sky area via scan-mode operation. We present the CTA GW follow-up program, with a focus on the searches for short GRBs possibly associated with BNS mergers. Abstract: Advances in wearable technologies provide the opportunity to monitor many physiological variables continuously. Stress detection has gained increased attention in recent years, mainly because early stress detection can help individuals better manage health to minimize the negative impacts of long-term stress exposure. This paper provides a unique stress detection dataset created in a natural working environment in a hospital. This dataset is a collection of biometric data of nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak. Studying stress in a work environment is complex due to many social, cultural, and psychological factors in dealing with stressful conditions. Therefore, we captured both the physiological data and associated context pertaining to the stress events. We monitored specifc physiological variables such as electrodermal activity, Heart Rate, and skin temperature of the nurse subjects. A periodic smartphone-administered survey also captured the contributing factors for the detected stress events. Abstract: The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) are two leading instruments in the ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray domain. HAWC employs the water Cherenkov detection (WCD) technique, while H.E.S.S. is an array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The two facilities therefore differ in multiple aspects, including their observation strategy, the size of their field of view and their angular resolution, leading to different analysis approaches. Until now, it has been unclear if the results of observations by both types of instruments are consistent: several of the recently discovered HAWC sources have been followed up by IACTs, resulting in a confirmed detection only in a minority of cases. With this paper, we go further and try to resolve the tensions between previous results by performing a new analysis of the H.E.S.S. Galactic plane survey data, applying an analysis technique comparable between H.E.S.S. and HAWC. Events above 1 TeV are selected for both datasets, the point spread function of H.E.S.S. is broadened to approach that of HAWC, and a similar background estimation method is used. This is the first detailed comparison of the Galactic plane observed by both instruments. H.E.S.S. can confirm the gamma-ray emission of four HAWC sources among seven previously undetected by IACTs, while the three others have measured fluxes below the sensitivity of the H.E.S.S. dataset. Remaining differences in the overall gamma-ray flux can be explained by the systematic uncertainties. Therefore, we confirm a consistent view of the gamma-ray sky between WCD and IACT techniques.

Abstract: The identification of PeVatrons, hadronic particle accelerators reaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum (few $10^{15}$ eV), is crucial to understand the origin of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. We provide an update on the unidentified source HESS J1702-420, a promising PeVatron candidate. We present new observations of HESS J1702-420 made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), and processed using improved analysis techniques. The analysis configuration was optimized to enhance the collection area at the highest energies. We applied a three-dimensional (3D) likelihood analysis to model the source region and adjust non thermal radiative spectral models to the $\gamma$-ray data. We also analyzed archival data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to constrain the source spectrum at $\gamma$-ray energies >10 GeV. We report the detection of a new source component called HESS J1702-420A, that was separated from the bulk of TeV emission at a $5.4\sigma$ confidence level. The power law $\gamma$-ray spectrum of HESS J1702-420A extends with an index of $\Gamma=1.53\pm0.19_\text{stat}\pm0.20_\text{sys}$ and without curvature up to the energy band 64-113 TeV, in which it was detected by H.E.S.S. at a $4.0\sigma$ confidence level. This brings evidence for the source emission up to $100\,\text{TeV}$, which makes HESS J1702-420A a compelling candidate site for the presence of extremely high energy cosmic rays. Remarkably, in a hadronic scenario, the cut-off energy of the proton distribution powering HESS J1702-420A is found to be higher than 0.5 PeV at a 95% confidence level. HESS J1702-420A becomes therefore one of the most solid PeVatron candidates detected so far in H.E.S.S. data, altough a leptonic origin of its emission could not be ruled out either., Comment: Accepted for publication in the 2. Abstract: Cosmological $N$-body simulations show that Milky Way-sized galaxies harbor a population of unmerged dark matter subhalos. These subhalos could shine in gamma-rays and be eventually detected in gamma-ray surveys as unidentified sources. We performed a thorough selection among unidentified Fermi-LAT Objects (UFOs) to identify them as possible TeV-scale dark matter subhalo candidates. We search for very-high-energy (E $\gtrsim$ 100 GeV) gamma-ray emissions using H.E.S.S. observations towards four selected UFOs. Since no significant very-high-energy gamma-ray emission is detected in any dataset of the four observed UFOs nor in the combined UFO dataset, strong constraints are derived on the product of the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section $\langle \sigma v \rangle$ by the $J$-factor for the dark matter models. The 95% C.L. observed upper limits derived from combined H.E.S.S. observations reach $\langle \sigma v \rangle J$ values of 3.7$\times$10$^{-5}$ and 8.1$\times$10$^{-6}$ GeV$^2$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ in the $W^+W^-$ and $\tau^+\tau^-$ channels, respectively, for a 1 TeV dark matter mass. Focusing on thermal WIMPs, the H.E.S.S. constraints restrict the $J$-factors to lie in the range 6.1$\times$10$^{19}$ - 2.0$\times$10$^{21}$ GeV$^2$cm$^{-5}$, and the masses to lie between 0.2 and 6 TeV in the $W^+W^-$ channel. For the $\tau^+\tau^-$ channel, the $J$-factors lie in the range 7.0$\times$10$^{19}$ - 7.1$\times$10$^{20}$ GeV$^2$cm$^{-5}$ and the masses lie between 0.2 and 0.5 TeV. Assuming model-dependent predictions from cosmological N-body simulations on the $J$-factor distribution for Milky Way-sized galaxies, the dark matter models with masses greater than 0.3 TeV for the UFO emissions can be ruled out at high confidence level., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, matches accepted version in The Astrophysical Journal
