Palaces of Reason traces the fascinating history of three royal residences built outside of Naples in the eighteenth century at Capodimonte, Portici, and Caserta. Commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon and Queen Maria Amalia of Saxony, who reigned over the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, these buildings were far more than residences for the monarchs. They were designed to help reshape the economic and cultural fortunes of the realm.The palaces at Capodimonte, Portici, and Caserta are among the most complex architectural commissions of the eighteenth century. Considering the architecture and decoration of these complexes within their political, cultural, and economic contexts, Robin L. Thomas argues that Enlightenment ideas spurred their construction and influenced their decoration. These modes of thinking saw the palaces as more than just centers of royal pleasure or muscular assertions of the crown's power. Indeed, writers and royal ministers viewed them as active agents in improving the cultural, political, social, and economic health of the kingdom. By casting the palaces within this narrative, Thomas counters the assumption that they were imitations of Versailles and the swan songs of absolutism, while expanding our understanding of the eighteenth-century European palace more broadly.Original and convincing, Thomas's book will be of interest to historians of art and architectural history and eighteenth-century studies.

Global Perspectives in Modern Italian Culture presents a series of unexplored case studies from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, each demonstrating how travellers, scientists, Catholic missionaries, scholars and diplomats coming from the Italian peninsula contributed to understandings of various global issues during the age of early globalization. But Apostolof's own life was every bit as improbable as the plots of his lurid movies. Escaping the clutches of the communists in his native Bulgaria, he came to America in 1952 and decided on a whim to reinvent himself as a Hollywood filmmaker, right down to the cigars, sunglasses and Cadillacs. He produced a string of memorable sexploitation classics, including the infamous Orgy of the Dead. Along the way, he married three times, fathered five children and forged a personal and professional relationship with the notorious Ed Wood, Jr. Drawing on rare archival material and interviews with those who knew him best, this first biography of Apostolof chronicles the life and career of a cult film legend.

Aviation extended the horizon of international touring across Asia and the Pacific in the 1950s and 1960s. Nightclubs in Hong Kong, Manila, Melbourne, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Taipei presented an international array of touring acts. This book investigates how this happened. It explores the post-war formation of the Asia Pacific region through international touring and the transformation of entertainment during the ‘jet age'of aviation. Drawing on archival research across the region, Bollen investigates how touring variety forged new relations between artists, audiences, and nations. Mapping tours and tracing networks by connecting fragments, he reveals how versatile artists translated repertoire in circulation as they toured, and how entrepreneurial endeavours harnessed the production of national distinction to government agendas. He argues that touring variety on commercial circuits diversified the repertoire in regional circulation, anticipating the diversity emerging in state-sanctioned multiculturalisms, and driving the government-construction of national theatres for cultural diplomacy.

Como se expresó en la contratapa del tomo anterior, la nómina de artistas que encararon esta tarea es tan amplia que nunca sería posible incluir en este diccionario biográfico a todos ellos. Los binomios, las parejas que los distintos ensayistas de este libro han elegido proceden de distintos escenarios y saberes -el arte, la filosofía, la historia- y constituyen un elenco, Armando Discepolo, Bernini, Mahler, Goddard, Freud, Osho- que encuentran otro convocado -García Lorca, Quiroga, Derrida, enrique Santos Discepolo, Borromini, Schoenberg, Truffaut, Rank, Heidegger- una respuesta acorde o contradictoria, una resonancia oportuna o un silencio indescifrable pero doloroso, un eco lejano e inmediato. Excepto el caso extremo, Pessoa, ya que el poeta portugués, sabía que su escasez o su demasía de ser, en la contienda de la pluralidad, reclamaba a otro idéntico y distinto, un heterónimo.

Con prefazione di Enrico Crispolti Nell'ambito di una rilettura filologica del Futurismo, nei suoi sviluppi temporali e nel progressivo ampliamento degli interessi, acquista un valore significativo la riproposizione di una rivista futurista del 1920 pressoché sconosciuta. Griffa!, dal nome di battaglia di fazioni perugine dal Duecento al Quattrocento, fu un periodico dei futuristi umbri che uscì ben presto dalla provincia per assumere un ruolo nazionale, sia per le firme che vi scrissero, sia per le redazioni romana e milanese e le altre corrispondenze, sia per la diffusione in molte città del centro-nord. Diretto da Gerardo Dottori e Alberto Presenzini Mattoli, uscì per quasi l'intero arco del 1920 in dodici numeri. Voleva svegliare l'ambiente culturale dell'Umbria, che viveva una lunga stagione di letargo, ma finì per essere una delle voci autorevoli degli sviluppi del Futurismo a livello nazionale, ospitando testi di Marinetti, Bottai ed altri esponenti del Movimento ed occupandosi di arte, musica, letteratura e costume. Il volume riproduce in fac-simile l'intera collezione della rivista, conservata in raccolte incomplete in poche biblioteche pubbliche. L'Associazione Archivi Gerardo Dottori di Perugia, sostenuta dal Comune di Perugia e dalla Regione Umbria ne ha promosso la pubblicazione in occasione del centenario futurista. L'analisi filologica è stata affidata ad Antonella Pesola, storica dell'arte con consolidata esperienza in materia di Futurismo. La prefazione è di Enrico Crispolti, già direttore della Scuola specializzazione in Storia dell'arte all'Università degli Studi di Siena e tra i maggiori esperti di Futurismo. A completamento del discorso sul Futurismo in Umbria, il cui esponente più significativo è stato Gerardo Dottori, il riconosciuto maestro dell'Aeropittura, la pubblicazione illustra i prodromi dell'avanguardia culturale di Perugia dal 1913 con la pubblicazione de Il Refrattario, qui interamente riprodotto, un foglio di un gruppo di giovani intellettuali, fra cui Presenzini Mattoli e Dottori, in cui si discute anche del Futurismo che era in quegli anni esploso a Milano. Questa esperienza è analizzata dallo storico Domenico Cialfi. L'opera è corredata da una cronologia degli eventi, da un dizionario biobibliografico dei personaggi trattati e da preziosi indici della testata e dei nomi, apparati curati da un'equipe di giovani ricercatori: Andrea Baffoni, Francesca Duranti, Samanta Retini.

Filmmaker Ed Wood was controversial and critically maligned, even labeled'the worst director of all time,'yet he achieved cult status and remains of great interest today. This book frames Wood's work, such as the cross-dressing themed Glen or Glenda? and the haphazard Bride of the Monster, as reflections of the culture of their era. Wood invariably worked with infinitesimal budgets, shooting at breakneck speed, incorporating plot twists that defied all logic. Yet there was a tangible if unfocused thematic thrust to Wood's films, which meditate fitfully on gender, religion and society, revealing a'holy trinity'of fixations--sex, death and resurrection. Wood's infamous Plan 9 From Outer Space encapsulates the fixations and flaws that were his hallmarks, and with 22 other films, is explored here. A filmography and 47 photographs are included.
