In this work we explore the possibility to perform ``effective energy'' studies in very high energy collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, we focus on the possibility to measure in $pp$ collisions the average charged multiplicity as a function of the effective energy with the ALICE experiment, using its capability to measure the energy of the leading baryons with the Zero Degree Calorimeters. Analyses of this kind have been done at lower centre--of--mass energies and have shown that, once the appropriate kinematic variables are chosen, particle production is characterized by universal properties: no matter the nature of the interacting particles, the final states have identical features. Assuming that this universality picture can be extended to {\it ion--ion} collisions, as suggested by recent results from RHIC experiments, a novel approach based on the scaling hypothesis for limiting fragmentation has been used to derive the expected charged event multiplicity in $AA$ interactions at LHC. This leads to scenarios where the multiplicity is significantly lower compared to most of the predictions from the models currently used to describe high energy $AA$ collisions. A mean charged multiplicity of about 1000-2000 per rapidity unit (at $\eta \sim 0$) is expected for the most central $Pb-Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.5 TeV$., Comment: 12 pages, 19 figures. We studied the surface deformations affecting the southeastern sector of the Po Plain sedimentary basin, in particular the area of Bologna. To this aim an advanced DInSAR technique, referred to as DInSAR–SBAS (Small BAseline Subset), has been applied. This technique allows monitoring the temporal evolution of a deformation phenomenon, via the generation of mean deformation velocity maps and displacement time series from a data set of acquired SAR images. In particular, we have processed a set of SAR data acquired by the European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS) sensors and compared the achieved results with optical levelling measurements, assumed as reference. The surface displacements detected by DInSAR SBAS from 1992 to 2000 are between 10 mm/year in the historical part of Bologna town, and up to 59 mm/year in the NE industrial and agricultural areas. Former measurements from optical levelling referred to 1897 show 2–3 mm/year vertical movements. This trend of displacement increased in the second half of the 20th century and the subsidence rate reached 60 mm/year. We compared the more recent levelling campaigns (in 1992 and late 1999) and DInSAR results from 1992 to 1999. The standard deviation of the difference between levelling data, projected onto the satellite Line Of Sight, and DInSAR results is 2 mm/year. This highlights a good agreement between the measurements provided by two different techniques. The explanation of soil movements based on interferometric results, ground data and geological observations, allowed confirming the anthropogenic cause (surface effect due to the overexploitation of the aquifers) and highlights a natural, tectonic, subsidence.

Automated procedures for photogrammetric image processing and Digital Elevation Models (DEM) extraction yield high precision terrain models in a short time, reducing manual editing; their accuracy is strictly related to image quality and terrain features. After an analysis of the performance of the Digital Photogrammetric Workstation (DPW) 770 Helava, the paper compares DEMs derived from different surveys and registered in the same reference system. In the case of stable area, the distribution of height residuals, their mean and standard deviation values, indicate that the theoretical accuracy is achievable automatically when terrain is characterized by regular morphology. Steep slopes, corrugated surfaces, vegetation and shadows can degrade results even if manual editing procedures are applied. The comparison of multi-temporal DEMs on unstable areas allows the monitoring of surface deformation and morphological changes.

GPS, digital photogrammetry and laser scanning techniques have been applied and compared in the frame of the studies of two complex landslides located in the Emilia-Romagna Region (Northern Italy). The three approaches, characterized by different accuracies, applicability and costs, have demonstrated to be efficient tools to define Digital Elevation Models computed in the same reference system and able to provide data on the landslide motion. The results described in the paper indicate the present low level of landslide activity in recent years. Reliability, costs and execution times of the applied surveying methods are shown and discussed in this paper.

A combination of digital photogrammetry and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) surveying has been used to measure landslide surface displacements and to estimate the volume involved in the movement. Ninety-eight percent of landslides mapped as active in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy are reactivations of dormant mass movements. The Ca' di Malta landslide, south of Bologna, was chosen to test this integrated system. A 0.5-m cellsize Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with vertical accuracy of 0.1 m was generated using digital photogrammetric techniques. We have used a combination of digital photogrammetry and three GPS techniques to monitor landslide movement. Rapid static surveying in which the survey observations are made for a period of minutes yielded sub-centimetre positions for several marked points distributed on a longitudinal axis along the landslide. Kinematic surveying, in which the observations are carried out continuously, in this case by a walking person, provided models of the surface (1×1 m grid) by measuring the position of irregularly distributed points. Continuous observations over 7 months were made between two GPS receivers. One positioned within the moving landslide body and the other at a fixed location outside the landslide. An automatic procedure was developed to download, process and compute relative movement at constant time intervals. The accuracy achieved with the GPS measurements ranges between several millimetres to a few centimetres for static and kinematic observations, respectively. This integrated survey technique is a cost-effective method that could be applied to other structural and morphological settings. The real-time monitoring could be coupled with a warning system for landslide hazard management and the repeated kinematic GPS surveys derive precise DEMs of a landslide, providing information on geometry, volumes and evolution of the phenomenon.

The Hyblean plateau (Southeastern Sicily) is characterised by three main tectonic structural trends: the first, NNW-SSE striking, runs on the easternmost part of the plateau and is linked to the Hyblean-Maltese fault system; the second runs along the western part of the plateau with a NNE-SSW direction and is characterised by a sinistral strike slip motion, like the Scicli fault; the third ENE-WSW striking, characterises the northernmost part of the area, including the Scordia-Lentini graben. We analysed GPS data collected in a dense network located in the northern area of the Hyblean plateau during 1998 and 2000, between the towns of Catania and Syracuse. Data from Noto, Matera and Cagliari IGS stations, were included in the processing to connect this network to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). The comparison between 1998 and 2000 data sets shows an average northward motion of the GPS stations located south of the Gela-Catania foredeep. Site velocities decrease from south to north and show a weak internal deformation of the northernmost part of the Hyblean plateau.

In this paper we present observations of crustal motion related to a largeGPSnetworklocated in the central‐western Mediterranean area. Velocities are obtained by the analysis of more than 30 observing sites at which at least three different GPS campaigns were carried out in the time span 1991–1999. The results are presented both in the ITRF96 reference frame and with respect to a Eurasian fixed reference frame. The siteslocated along the northern African margin, in Sicily and southern Italy show prevalentnortheastward movements with a mean velocity of roughly 0.7 cm yr −1 . The relatively dense network available in the southern Apennines led us to try a tentative estimate of the average strain rate in this zone, resulting in a maximum extension of 0.021 ± 0.006 × 10 −6 yr −1 normal to the chain. In Ionian Greece the two sites located south of the Kephallinia discontinuity (Lefkas and Kastro Ilias) consistently indicate a south to southwestward motion at an average rate of roughly 15 mm yr −1 .

The results of an experiment carried out with the aim to investigate the role of surface irregularities on the intensity data provided by a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) survey are reported here. Depending on surface roughness, the interaction between an electromagnetic wave and microscopic irregularities leads to a Lambertian-like diffusive light reflection, allowing the TLS to receive the backscattered component of the signal. The described experiment consists in a series of TLS-based acquisitions of a rotating artificial target specifically conceived in order to highlight the effects on the intensity data due to surface irregularity. This target is articulated in a flat plate and in an irregular surface, whose macro-roughness has a characteristic length with the same order of the spot size. Results point out the different behavior of the plates. The intensity of the signal backscattered. by the planar element decreases if the incidence angle increases, whereas the intensity of the signal backscattered by the irregular surface is almost constant if the incidence angle varies. Since the typical surfaces acquired in a geological/geophysical survey are generally irregular, these results imply that the intensity data can be easily used in order to evaluate the reflectance of the material at the considered wavelength, e.g. for pattern recognition purposes.

This paper concerns the displacement field of the central-western part of the Mediterranean basin estimated by the analysis of three repeated GPS surveys (1995, 1996 and 1997) consisting of 8 sites of a network. This network includes for the first time the stations of Algiers and Arzew, located in Northern Algeria, an area not yet investigated by regional GPS surveys. Lampedusa station is located in the Sicily Straits rifting area while the other five stations of Cagliari, Wettzell, Madrid, Matera and Noto belong to the IGS permanent tracking network. The statistical analysis of 1995, 1996 and 1997 data show significant displacements at five stations. The displacement vectors of the African sites show a convergence between the African and the Eurasian plates at a rate of 0.8 ± 0.4 cm within a two year time span. A comparison between the displacements estimated in the present work and the ITRF96 determinations for the five permanent stations allow us to evaluate the motion of Lampedusa, Algiers and Arzew in the IERS Terrestrial Reference System.

Geophysical site investigations have been performed in association with deployment of a dense array of 95 3-component seismometers on the Cavola landslide in the Northern Apennines. The aim of the array is to study propagation of seismic waves in the heterogeneous medium through comparison of observation and modelling. The small-aperture array (130 m×56 m) operated continuously for three months in 2004. Cavola landslide consists of a clay body sliding over mudstone-shale basement, and has a record of historical activity, including destruction of a small village in 1960. The site investigations include down-hole logging of P- and S-wave travel times at a new borehole drilled within the array, two seismic refraction lines with both P-wave profiling and surface-wave analyses, geo-electrical profiles and seismic noise measurements. From the different approaches a consistent picture of the depths and seismic velocities for the landslide has emerged. Their estimates agree with resonance frequencies of seismic noise, and also with the logged depths to basement of 25 m at a new borehole and of 44 m at a pre-existing borehole. Velocities for S waves increase with depth, from 230 m/s at the surface to 625 m/s in basement immediately below the landslide.

This work focuses on the use of terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) in the characterization of volcanic environments. A TLS survey of the Vesuvius crater (Somma-Vesuvius volcano, Italy) allows the construction of an accurate, georeferenced digital model of different sectors of the crater. In each sector, the intensity is computed for each point as the ratio between the emitted amplitude and the received one, normalized to the maximum signal, providing the radiometric information. Moreover, the RGB colours of the observed surfaces can be captured by means of a calibrated camera mounted on the TLS instrument. In this way, multi-band information is given, since a long range TLS operates in the near infrared band. The reflectance and RGB data are compared in order to verify if they are independent enough to be complementary for model analysis and inspection. Results show that the integration of RGB and intensity data can fully characterize this volcanic environment. The collected data are able to discriminate different volcanic deposits and to detect their stratigraphic features. In addition, our results shed light on the spatial extension of landslides and on the dimensions of rock fall/flow deposits affecting the inner walls of the crater. The remotely acquired TLS information from the Vesuvius crater is compared with that from a sedimentary terrain (coal-shale quarry) to detect possible similarities/differences between these two geological environments.
