Abstract

The general antiparticle spectrometer (GAPS) experiment is a proposed indirect dark matter search focusing on antiparticles produced by WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle) annihilation and decay in the Galactic halo. In addition to the very powerful search channel provided by antideuterons, GAPS has a strong capability to measure low-energy antiprotons (0.07 $\le$ E $\le$ 0.25 GeV) as dark matter signatures. This is an especially effective means for probing light dark matter, whose existence has been hinted at in the direct dark matter searches, including the recent result from the CDMS-II experiment. While severely constrained by LUX and other direct dark matter searches, light dark matter candidates are still viable in an isospin-violating dark matter scenario and halo-independent analysis. Along with the excellent antideuteron sensitivity, GAPS will be able to detect an order of magnitude more low-energy antiprotons, compared to BESS, PAMELA and AMS-02, providing a precision measurement of low-energy antiproton flux and a unique channel for probing light dark matter models. Additionally, dark matter signatures from gravitinos and Kaluza-Klein right-handed neutrinos as well as evidence of primordial black hole evaporation can be observed through low-energy antiproton search., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

AX J1745.6-2901 is a high-inclination (eclipsing) neutron star Low Mass X-rayBinary (LMXB) located less than ~1.5 arcmin from Sgr A*. Ongoing monitoringcampaigns have targeted Sgr A* frequently and these observations also cover AXJ1745.6-2901. We present here an X-ray analysis of AX J1745.6-2901 using alarge dataset of 38 XMM-Newton observations, including eleven which caught AXJ1745.6-2901 in outburst. Fe K absorption is clearly seen when AX J1745.6-2901is in the soft state, but disappears during the hard state. The variability ofthese absorption features does not appear to be due to changes in the ionizingcontinuum. The small Kalpha/Kbeta ratio of the equivalent widths of the Fe xxvand Fe xxvi lines suggests that the column densities and turbulent velocitiesof the absorbing ionised plasma are in excess of N_H ~ 10^23 cm^-2 and v_turb>~ 500 km s^-1. These findings strongly support a connection between the wind(Fe K absorber) and the accretion state of the binary. These results revealstrong similarities between AX J1745.6-2901 and the eclipsing neutron starLMXB, EXO 0748-676, as well as with high-inclination black hole binaries, wherewinds (traced by the same Fe K absorption features) are observed only duringthe accretion-disc-dominated soft states, and disappear during the hard statescharacterised by jet emission.

Abstract

The General AntiParticle Spectrometer experiment (GAPS) is foreseen to carry out a dark matter search using low-energy cosmic ray antideuterons at stratospheric altitudes with a novel detection approach. A prototype flight from Taiki, Japan was carried out in June 2012 to prove the performance of the GAPS instrument subsystems (Lithium-drifted Silicon tracker and time-of-flight) and the thermal cooling concept as well as to measure background levels. The flight was a success and the stable flight operation of the GAPS detector concept was proven. During the flight about $10^6$ charged particle triggers were recorded, extensive X-ray calibrations of the individual tracker modules were performed by using an onboard X-ray tube, and the background level of atmospheric and cosmic X-rays was measured. The behavior of the tracker performance as a function of temperature was investigated. The tracks of charged particle events were reconstructed and used to study the tracking resolution, the detection efficiency of the tracker, and coherent X-ray backgrounds. A timing calibration of the time-of-flight subsystem was performed to measure the particle velocity. The flux as a function of flight altitude and as a function of velocity was extracted taking into account systematic instrumental effects. Abstract

The General AntiParticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is a novel approach for the indirect dark matter search that exploits cosmic antideuterons. GAPS utilizes a distinctive detection method using atomic X-rays and charged particles from the exotic atom as well as the timing, stopping range and dE/dX energy deposit of the incoming particle, which provides excellent antideuteron identification. In anticipation of a future balloon experiment, an accelerator test was conducted in 2004 and 2005 at KEK, Japan, in order to prove the concept and to precisely measure the X-ray yields of antiprotonic exotic atoms formed with different target materials [1]. The X-ray yields of the exotic atoms with Al and S targets were obtained as ~ 75%, which are higher than were previously assumed in [2]. A simple, but comprehensive cascade model has been developed not only to evaluate the measurement results but also to predict the X-ray yields of the exotic atoms formed with any materials in the GAPS instrument. The cascade model is extendable to any kind of exotic atom (any negatively charged cascading particles with any target materials), and it was compared and validated with other experimental data and cascade models for muonic and antiprotonic exotic atoms. The X-ray yields of the antideuteronic exotic atoms are predicted with a simple cascade model and the sensitivity for the GAPS antideuteron search was estimated for the proposed long duration balloon program [3], which suggests that GAPS has a strong potential to detect antideuterons as a dark matter signature. Abstract

The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) experiment is a novel approach for the detection of cosmic ray antiparticles. A prototype GAPS experiment (pGAPS) was successfully flown on a high-altitude balloon in June of 2012. Abstract

The GAPS experiment is foreseen to carry out a dark matter search using a novel detection approach to detect low-energy cosmic-ray antideuterons. The theoretically predicted antideuteron flux resulting from secondary interactions of primary cosmic rays with the interstellar medium is very low. So far not a single cosmic antideuteron has been detected by any experiment, but well-motivated theories beyond the standard model of particle physics, e.g., supersymmetry or universal extra dimensions, contain viable dark matter candidates, which could led to a significant enhancement of the antideuteron flux due to self-annihilation of the dark matter particles.This flux contribution is believed to be especially large at small energies, which leads to a high discovery potential for GAPS. GAPS is designed to achieve its goals via a series of ultra-long duration balloon flights at high altitude in Antarctica, starting in 2014. The detector itself will consist of 13 planes of Si(Li) solid state detectors and a time of flight system. The low-energy antideuterons (< 0.3 GeV/n) will be slowed down in the Si(Li) material, replace a shell electron, and form an excited exotic atom. The atom will be deexcited by characteristic x-ray transitions and will end its life by forming an annihilation pion star. This unique event structure will allow for nearly background free detection. Abstract

We report on recent accelerator testing of a prototype general antiparticle spectrometer (GAPS). GAPS is a novel approach for indirect dark matter searches that exploits the antideuterons produced in neutralino-neutralino annihilations. GAPS captures these antideuterons into a target with the subsequent formation of exotic atoms. These exotic atoms decay with the emission of X-rays of precisely defined energy and a correlated pion signature from nuclear annihilation. This signature uniquely characterizes the antideuterons. Preliminary analysis of data from a prototype GAPS in an antiproton beam at the KEK accelerator in Japan has confirmed the multi-X-ray/pion star topology and indicated X-ray yields consistent with prior expectations. Abstract

A new hyperon-proton scattering experiment, dubbed J-PARC E40, was performed to measure differential cross sections of the Σ+p, Σ−p elastic scatterings and the Σ−p → Λn scattering by identifying a lot of Σ particles in the momentum ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 GeV/c produced by the π±p → K+Σ± reactions. We successfully measured the differential cross sections of these three channels with a drastically improved accuracy with a fine angular step. These new data will become important experimental constraints to improve the theories of the two-body baryon-baryon interactions. Following this success, we proposed a new experiment to measure the differential cross sections and spin observables by using a highly polarized Λ beam for providing quantitative information on the ΛN interaction. The results of three Σp channels and future prospects of the Λp scattering experiment are described.

Abstract

We present a new analysis of previously published SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood framework to search for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering these possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that are undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to 220 MeV/c2 at 2.7×10−30 cm2 via the bremsstrahlung channel. The Migdal channel search provides overall considerably more stringent limits and excludes DM masses down to 30 MeV/c2 at 5.0×10−30 cm2.

Abstract

We present a new analysis of previously published SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood framework to search for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering these possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that are undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to 220 MeV/c2 at 2.7×10−30 cm2 via the bremsstrahlung channel. The Migdal channel search provides overall considerably more stringent limits and excludes DM masses down to 30 MeV/c2 at 5.0×10−30 cm2.

Abstract

We performed a novel Σ⁺+p scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 Σ⁺+p elastic scattering events were identified from 4.9 × 10⁷ tagged Σ⁺+ particles in the Σ⁺+ momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c. The differential cross sections of the Σ⁺+p elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the ³S₁ and ¹P₁ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the ³S₁ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as 20° < |δ₃S₁| < 35°. Abstract

Through advanced experimental techniques on Formula Presented single crystals, we derive a pressure-temperature phase diagram. We find that Formula Presented increases to Formula Presented K with pressure up to Formula Presented GPa followed by a decrease to Formula Presented K at 21.2 GPa. The experimental results are reproduced by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory where electron-electron interactions are treated by a static on-site Hubbard Formula Presented on Cr Formula Presented orbitals. The origin of the pressure-induced reduction of the ordering temperature is associated with a decrease in the calculated bond angle, from Formula Presented at ambient pressure to Formula Presented at 25 GPa. Above 22 GPa, experiment and theory jointly point to the idea that the ferromagnetically ordered state is destroyed, giving rise first to a complex, unknown magnetic configuration, and at sufficiently high pressures a pure antiferromagnetic configuration. This sequence of transitions in the magnetism is accompanied by a well-detected pressure-induced semiconductor-to-metal phase transition that is revealed by both high-pressure resistivity measurements and ab initio theory. ©2022 American Physical Society. Abstract

At low energies, cosmic antideuterons and antihelium provide an ultra-low background signature of dark matter annihilation, decay, and other beyond the Standard Model phenomena. The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is an Antarctic balloon experiment designed to search for lowenergy (0.1−0.3 GeV/n) antinuclei, and is planned to launch in the austral summer of 2022. While optimized for an antideuteron search, GAPS also has unprecedented capabilites for the detection of low-energy antihelium nuclei, utilizing a novel detection technique based on the formation, decay, and annihilation of exotic atoms. The AMS-02 collaboration has recently reported several antihelium nuclei candidate events, which sets GAPS in a unique position to set constraints on the cosmic antihelium flux in an energy region which is essentially free of astrophysical background. In this contribution, we illustrate the capabilities of GAPS to search for cosmic antihelium-3 utilizing complete instrument simulations, event reconstruction, and the inclusion of atmospheric effects. We show that GAPS is capable of setting unprecedented limits on the cosmic antihelium flux, opening a new window on exotic cosmic physics.

Abstract

The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is a balloon-borne experiment, scheduled for a first flight in the austral summer 2022. It is designed to measure low energy (< 0.25 GeV/n) cosmic antinuclei. A particular focus is on antideuterons, which are predicted to have an ultra-low astrophysical background as compared to signals from dark matter annihilation or decay in the Galactic halo. GAPS uses a novel technique for particle identification based on the formation and decay of exotic atoms. To achieve sufficient rejection power for particle identification, an accurate determination of several fundamental quantities is needed. The precise reconstruction of the energy deposition pattern on the primary track is a particularly intricate problem and we developed a strategy devised to solve this using modern machine learning techniques. In the future, this approach can also be used for particle identification. Here, we present preliminary results of these efforts obtained from simulations.

Abstract

This work was performed in order to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of vitamin A against the damages caused by gamma radiation in rat repair tissue. It were used 48 animals. An incision was made in the dorsal region of the animals, which were separated into four experimental groups, composed of 12 animals each, as follows: Control group (CG) corresponding to the animals which were only submitted to the surgical procedure; Irradiated group (IG), composed by rats that have received 6 Gy of total body gamma irradiation 72 hours after the surgery; Vitamin A group (VAG), where the rats were treated with 15,000 UI of aqueous solution of vitamin A i.p. 48 hours after the wound infliction and Vitamin A irradiated group (VAIG) formed by animals treated in the same way as VAG but gamma-irradiated as IG. After the histological procedures, the repair tissues were observed at 4, 7, 14 and 21 days of development by means of qualitative and quantitative birefringence. The results pointed out to a very effective protection of the repair tissue performed by vitamin A against gamma irradiation.

Abstract

The differential cross sections of the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction were measured accurately for the {\Sigma}- momentum (p_{{\Sigma}}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of {\Delta}cos{\theta} = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions.The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cos{\theta} < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470, Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2104.13608

Abstract

A high statistics $\Sigma p$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $\Sigma^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{+}\Sigma^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $\pi^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $\Sigma^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $\Sigma^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Abstract

To determine prognostic factors for the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI) progression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in clinical practice.We evaluated 388 biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (bDMARD)-naïve Japanese patients with RA with moderate to high disease activity at study entry after being treated with conventional synthetic DMARDs. These patients were treated according to a treat-to-target (T2T) strategy for one year. The Disease Activity Score in 28 joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) and the HAQ-DI were assessed every three months. We also evaluated joint destruction using a modified total Sharp score at baseline and at one year. HAQ-DI progression was defined as the yearly progression of HAQ-DI0.1. We performed a multiple logistic regression analysis to explore the factors predicting HAQ-DI progression at one year.HAQ-DI progression was observed in 18% of the patients. The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed the independent variables associated with HAQ-DI progression were: DAS28-ESR5.1 at baseline (odds ratio [OR] 0.31, 95% con dence interval [CI] 0.13-0.74, p=0.0083); HAQ-DI score at baseline0.5 (OR 2.27, 95% CI 1.22-4.26, p=0.0102); and achievement of low disease activity at 12 weeks (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.21-0.82, p=0.0112).Our data suggest that maintaining clinical improvement according to T2T and initiating the treatment at an early stage are important for functional improvement after one year and that patients with low baseline HAQ scores have a higher risk of HAQ disability progression.
