Autonomous driving, particularly navigating complex and unanticipated scenarios, demands sophisticated reasoning and planning capabilities. While Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) offer a promising avenue for this, their use has been largely confined to understanding complex environmental contexts or generating high-level driving commands, with few studies extending their application to end-to-end path planning. A major research bottleneck is the lack of large-scale annotated datasets encompassing vision, language, and action. To address this issue, we propose CoVLA (Comprehensive Vision-Language-Action) Dataset, an extensive dataset comprising real-world driving videos spanning more than 80 hours. This dataset leverages a novel, scalable approach based on automated data processing and a caption generation pipeline to generate accurate driving trajectories paired with detailed natural language descriptions of driving environments and maneuvers. This approach utilizes raw in-vehicle sensor data, allowing it to surpass existing datasets in scale and annotation richness. Using CoVLA, we investigate the driving capabilities of MLLMs that can handle vision, language, and action in a variety of driving scenarios. Our results illustrate the strong proficiency of our model in generating coherent language and action outputs, emphasizing the potential of Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models in the field of autonomous driving. This dataset establishes a framework for robust, interpretable, and data-driven autonomous driving systems by providing a comprehensive platform for training and evaluating VLA models, contributing to safer and more reliable self-driving vehicles. We investigate the independent chiral zero modes on the orbifolds from the Atiyah-Segal-Singer fixed point theorem. The required information for this calculation includes the fixed points of the orbifold and the manner in which the spatial symmetries act on these points, unlike previous studies that necessitated the calculation of zero modes. Since the fixed point theorem can be applied to any fermionic theory on any orbifold, it allows us to determine the index even on orbifolds where the calculation of zero modes is challenging or in the presence of non-trivial gauge configurations. We compute the indices on the $T^{2}/ \mathbb{Z}_N\,(N=2,3,4,6)$ and $T^{4}/ \mathbb{Z}_N\,(N=2,3,5)$ as examples. Cosmological collider signals of primordial non-Gaussianity arise at tree level when an extra scalar has Hubble mass during inflation. We critically review the formalism finding that a large class of inflationary theories, based on Planck-scale physics, predict a scalar bi-spectrum around the gravitational floor level. This mild signal arises for example in $R^2$ gravity, in the regime where its gravitational scalar has Hubble-scale mass. Advancing defensive mechanisms against adversarial attacks in generative models is a critical research topic in machine learning. Our study focuses on a specific type of generative models - Variational Auto-Encoders (VAEs). Contrary to common beliefs and existing literature which suggest that noise injection towards training data can make models more robust, our preliminary experiments revealed that naive usage of noise augmentation technique did not substantially improve VAE robustness. In fact, it even degraded the quality of learned representations, making VAEs more susceptible to adversarial perturbations. This paper introduces a novel framework that enhances robustness by regularizing the latent space divergence between original and noise-augmented data. Through incorporating a paired probabilistic prior into the standard variational lower bound, our method significantly boosts defense against adversarial attacks. Our empirical evaluations demonstrate that this approach, termed Robust Augmented Variational Auto-ENcoder (RAVEN), yields superior performance in resisting adversarial inputs on widely-recognized benchmark datasets.

Measurements of the upper atmosphere at ~100 km are important to investigate climate change, space weather forecasting, and the interaction between the Sun and the Earth. Atmospheric occultations of cosmic X-ray sources are an effective technique to measure the neutral density in the upper atmosphere. We are developing the instrument SUIM dedicated to continuous observations of atmospheric occultations. SUIM will be mounted on a platform on the exterior of the International Space Station for six months and pointed at the Earth's rim to observe atmospheric absorption of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB). In this paper, we conducted a feasibility study of SUIM by estimating the CXB statistics and the fraction of the non-X-ray background (NXB) in the observed data. The estimated CXB statistics are enough to evaluate the atmospheric absorption of CXB for every 15 km of altitude. On the other hand, the NXB will be dominant in the X-ray spectra of SUIM. In this study, we propose a shared control method for teleoperated mobile robots using brain-machine interfaces (BMI). The control commands generated through BMI for robot operation face issues of low input frequency, discreteness, and uncertainty due to noise. To address these challenges, our method estimates the user's intended goal from their commands and uses this goal to generate auxiliary commands through the autonomous system that are both at a higher input frequency and more continuous. Furthermore, by defining the confidence level of the estimation, we adaptively calculated the weights for combining user and autonomous commands, thus achieving shared control.

We mathematically show an equality between the index of a Dirac operator on a flat continuum torus and the $\eta$ invariant of the Wilson Dirac operator with a negative mass when the lattice spacing is sufficiently small. Unlike the standard approach, our formulation using $K$-theory does not require the Ginsparg-Wilson relation or the modified chiral symmetry on the lattice. We prove that a one-parameter family of continuum massive Dirac operators and the corresponding Wilson Dirac operators belong to the same equivalence class of the $K^1$ group at a finite lattice spacing. The upper atmosphere at the altitude of 60-110 km, the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT), has the least observational data of all atmospheres due to the difficulties of in-situ observations. Previous studies demonstrated that atmospheric occultation of cosmic X-ray sources is an effective technique to investigate the MLT. Aiming to measure the atmospheric density of the MLT continuously, we are developing an X-ray camera, "Soipix for observing Upper atmosphere as Iss experiment Mission (SUIM)", dedicated to atmospheric observations. SUIM will be installed on the exposed area of the International Space Station (ISS) and face the ram direction of the ISS to point toward the Earth rim. Observing the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) transmitted through the atmosphere, we will measure the absorption column density via spectroscopy and thus obtain the density of the upper atmosphere. The X-ray camera is composed of a slit collimator and two X-ray SOI-CMOS pixel sensors (SOIPIX), and will stand on its own and make observations, controlled by a CPU-embedded FPGA "Zynq". We plan to install the SUIM payload on the ISS in 2025 during the solar maximum. Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable performance in various natural language tasks, but they often struggle with planning problems that require structured reasoning. To address this limitation, the conversion of planning problems into the Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL) has been proposed as a potential solution, enabling the use of automated planners. However, generating accurate PDDL files typically demands human inputs or correction, which can be time-consuming and costly. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that leverages LLMs and environment feedback to automatically generate PDDL domain and problem description files without the need for human intervention. Our method introduces an iterative refinement process that generates multiple problem PDDL candidates and progressively refines the domain PDDL based on feedback obtained from interacting with the environment. To guide the refinement process, we develop an Exploration Walk (EW) metric, which provides rich feedback signals for LLMs to update the PDDL file. We evaluate our approach on $10$ PDDL environments. We achieve an average task solve rate of 66% compared to a 29% solve rate by GPT-4's intrinsic planning with chain-of-thought prompting. Our work enables the automated modeling of planning environments using LLMs and environment feedback, eliminating the need for human intervention in the PDDL translation process and paving the way for more reliable LLM agents in challenging problems. The amount of Magnetic resonance imaging data has grown tremendously recently, creating an urgent need to accelerate data processing, which requires substantial computational resources and time. In this preliminary study, we applied FMRIB Software Library commands on T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted images of a single young adult using the Fugaku supercomputer. The tensor-based measurements and subcortical structure segmentations performed on Fugaku supercomputer were highly consistent with those from conventional systems, demonstrating its reliability and significantly reduced processing time.

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. The magnetic skyrmions generated in a centrosymmetric crystal were recently first discovered in Gd2PdSi3. In light of this, we observe the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and unveil its direct relationship with the magnetism in this compound. The Fermi surface and band dispersions are demonstrated to have a good agreement with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations carried out with careful consideration of the crystal superstructure. Most importantly, we find that the three-dimensional Fermi surface has extended nesting which matches well the q-vector of the magnetic order detected by recent scattering measurements. The consistency we find among ARPES, DFT, and the scattering measurements suggests the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction involving itinerant electrons to be the formation mechanism of skyrmions in Gd2PdSi3.

We explore the efficacy of two single-repumping schemes, $5s5p \,{}^3P_2 - 5p^2 \,{}^3P_2$ ($481\,\mathrm{nm}$) and $5s5p \,{}^3P_2 - 5s5d \,{}^3D_2$ ($497\,\mathrm{nm}$), for a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of Sr atoms. We reveal that the enhancement in the MOT lifetime is limited to $26.9(2)$ for any single-repumping scheme. Our investigation indicates that the primary decay path from the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1$ state to the $5s5p \,{}^3P_0$ state proceeds via the $5s4d \,{}^3D_1$ state, rather than through the upper states accessed by the single-repumping lasers. We estimate that the branching ratio for the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1 \to 5s4d \,{}^3D_1 \to 5s5p \,{}^3P_0$ decay path is $1:3.9 \times 10^6$ and the decay rate for the transition from the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1$ state to the $5s4d \,{}^3D_1$ state is $83(32)\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}$. This outcome underscores the limitation on atom number in the MOT for long loading times ($\gtrsim 1 \,\mathrm{s}$) when employing a single-repumping scheme. The GRAINE project observes cosmic gamma-rays, using a balloon-borne emulsion-film-based telescope in the sub-GeV/GeV energy band. We reported in our previous balloon experiment in 2018, GRAINE2018, the detection of the known brightest source, Vela pulsar, with the highest angular resolution ever reported in an energy range of $>$80 MeV. However, the emulsion scanning system used in the experiment was designed to achieve a high-speed scanning, and it was not accurate enough to ensure the optimum spacial resolution of the emulsion film and limited the performance. Here, we report a new high-precision scanning system that can be used to greatly improve the observation result of GRAINE2018 and also be employed in future experiments. The system involves a new algorithm that recognizes each silver grain on an emulsion film and is capable of measuring tracks with a positional resolution for the passing points of tracks of almost the same as the intrinsic resolution of nuclear emulsion film ($\sim$70 nm). This resolution is approximately one order of magnitude smaller than that obtained with the high-speed scanning system. With this system, an angular resolution for gamma-rays of 0.1$^\circ$ at 1 GeV is expected to be achieved. Furthermore, we successfully combine the new high-precision system with the existing high-speed system, establishing the system to make a high-speed and high-precision measurement. Employing these systems, we reanalyze the gamma-ray events detected previously by only the high-speed system in GRAINE2018 and obtain an about three times higher angular resolution (0.22$^\circ$) in 500--700 MeV than the original value. The high-resolution observation may bring new insights into the gamma-ray emission from the Galactic center region and may realize polarization measurements of high-energy cosmic gamma-rays., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

A 2-distance $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper $k$-coloring such that any two vertices at distance two or less get different colors. The 2-distance chromatic number of $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a 2-distance $k$-coloring, denoted by $\chi_2(G)$. In this paper, we show that $\chi_2(G) \leq 20$ for every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree at most six, which improves a former bound $\chi_2(G) \leq 21$., Comment: 12 pages

We examined the magnetic properties of YbBe13, which exhibits an antiferromagnetic order below TN = 1.2 K. Unlike other MBe13 compounds (M = rare earth/actinide elements), based on elastic neutron scattering, we observed an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector {\tau} = (0,0,{\tau}z), where {\tau}z = 0.5385 is in the reciprocal lattice unit. Additionally, we constructed a precise magnetic phase diagram for YbBe13. We observed non-trivial magnetic anomalies in YbBe13, which cannot be understood based on a simple helical order. Our results for YbBe13 provide an opportunity to reconsider the electron state of UBe13 and present an important step toward a comprehensive understanding of magnetic correlations in MBe13 series., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Multi-step reasoning instruction, such as chain-of-thought prompting, is widely adopted to explore better language models (LMs) performance. We report on the systematic strategy that LMs employ in such a multi-step reasoning process. Our controlled experiments reveal that LMs rely more heavily on heuristics, such as lexical overlap, in the earlier stages of reasoning, where more reasoning steps remain to reach a goal. Conversely, their reliance on heuristics decreases as LMs progress closer to the final answer through multiple reasoning steps. This suggests that LMs can backtrack only a limited number of future steps and dynamically combine heuristic strategies with rationale ones in tasks involving multi-step reasoning., Comment: This paper is accepted at EMNLP 2024

We investigate a structure of a 4-dimensional bulk space constructed from the $O(N)$ invariant critical $\varphi^4$ model in 3-dimension using the conformal smearing. We calculate a bulk metric corresponding to the information metric and the bulk-to-boundary propagator for a composite scalar field $\varphi^2$ in the large $N$ expansion. We show that the bulk metric describes an asymptotic AdS space at both UV (near boundary) and IR (deep in the bulk) limits, which correspond to the asymptotic free UV fixed point and the Wilson-Fisher IR fixed point of the 3-dimensional $\varphi^4$ model, respectively. The bulk-to-boundary scalar propagator, on the other hand, encodes $\Delta_{\varphi^2}$ (the conformal dimension of $\varphi^2$) into its $z$ (a coordinate in the extra direction of the AdS space) dependence. Namely it correctly reproduces not only $\Delta_{\varphi^2}=1$ at UV fixed point but also $\Delta_{\varphi^2}=2$ at the IR fixed point for the boundary theory. A periodically-driven superconducting nonlinear resonator can implement a Kerr-cat qubit, which provides a promising route to a quantum computer with a long lifetime. However, the system is vulnerable to pure dephasing, which causes unwanted excitations outside the qubit subspace. Therefore, we require a refrigeration technology which confines the system in the qubit subspace. We theoretically study on-chip refrigeration for Kerr-cat qubits based on photon-assisted electron tunneling at tunneling junctions, called quantum circuit refrigerator (QCR). Rates of QCR-induced deexcitations of the system can be changed by more than four orders of magnitude by tuning a bias voltage across the tunneling junctions. Unwanted QCR-induced bit flips are greatly suppressed due to quantum interference in the tunneling process, and thus the long lifetime is preserved. The QCR can serve as a tunable dissipation source which stabilizes Kerr-cat qubits.

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In noncentrosymmetric superconductors, superconducting and normal conductions can interchange based on the current flow direction. This effect is termed a superconducting diode effect (SDE), which is a focal point of recent research. The broken inversion and time reversal symmetry is believed to be the requirements of SDE but their intrinsic role has remained elusive. Here, we report strain-controlled SDEs in a layered trigonal superconductor, PbTaSe2. The SDE was found exclusively in a strained device with its absence in an unstrained device, despite that it is allowed in unstrained trigonal structure. Moreover, the zero-field or magnetic field-even (magnetic field-odd) SDE is observed when the strain and current are along armchair (zigzag) direction The results unambiguously demonstrate the intrinsic SDE under time-reversal symmetry and the critical role of strain-induced electric polarization., Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures

For an arbitrary $\infty$-topos, we classify the smashing localizations in the $\infty$-category of sheaves valued in derived vector spaces: Any of them is the restriction functor to a (unique) closed subtopos. Our proof is based on the existence of a Boolean cover. This result in particular gives us the first example of a nonzero presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category whose smashing spectrum has no points. Combining this with the sheaves-spectrum adjunction, we obtain a Tannaka-type categorical reconstruction result for locales., Comment: 9 pages

We introduce CORTEX, an algorithmic framework designed for large-scale brain simulation. Leveraging the computational capacity of the Fugaku Supercomputer, CORTEX maximizes available problem size and processing performance. Our primary innovation, Indegree Sub-Graph Decomposition, along with a suite of parallel algorithms, facilitates efficient domain decomposition by segmenting the global graph structure into smaller, identically structured sub-graphs. This segmentation allows for parallel processing of synaptic interactions without inter-process dependencies, effectively eliminating data racing at the thread level without necessitating mutexes or atomic operations. Additionally, this strategy enhances the overlap of communication and computation. Benchmark tests conducted on spiking neural networks, characterized by biological parameters, have demonstrated significant enhancements in both problem size and simulation performance, surpassing the capabilities of the current leading open-source solution, the NEST Simulator. Our work offers a powerful new tool for the field of neuromorphic computing and understanding brain function.

We study the $U(1)_A$ anomaly at high temperatures of $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD with chiral fermions. Gauge ensembles are generated with M\"obius domain-wall (MDW) fermions, and the measurements are reweighted to those with overlap fermions. Based on simulations of 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with M\"obius domain wall fermions at high temperatures, we compute a series of spatial correlation functions to study the screening masses in mesonic states. We compare these masses with the symmetry relations for various quark masses and lattice sizes at temperatures above the critical point. Using these spatial correlation functions we examine the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry as well as the anomalously broken axial $U(1)_A$ symmetry. We investigate relations between the chiral susceptibility and axial $U(1)$ anomaly in lattice QCD at high temperatures. Employing the exactly chiral symmetric Dirac operator, we separate the purely axial $U(1)$ breaking effect in the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilites in a theoretically clean manner. Machine learning (ML) methods have experienced significant growth in the past decade, yet their practical application in high-impact real-world domains has been hindered by their opacity. When ML methods are responsible for making critical decisions, stakeholders often require insights into how to alter these decisions. Counterfactual explanations (CFEs) have emerged as a solution, offering interpretations of opaque ML models and providing a pathway to transition from one decision to another. However, most existing CFE methods require access to the model's training dataset, few methods can handle multivariate time-series, and none can handle multivariate time-series without training datasets. These limitations can be formidable in many scenarios. In this paper, we present CFWoT, a novel reinforcement-learning-based CFE method that generates CFEs when training datasets are unavailable. CFWoT is model-agnostic and suitable for both static and multivariate time-series datasets with continuous and discrete features. Users have the flexibility to specify non-actionable, immutable, and preferred features, as well as causal constraints which CFWoT guarantees will be respected. We demonstrate the performance of CFWoT against four baselines on several datasets and find that, despite not having access to a training dataset, CFWoT finds CFEs that make significantly fewer and significantly smaller changes to the input time-series. These properties make CFEs more actionable, as the magnitude of change required to alter an outcome is vastly reduced.

Recent discoveries of Earth-sized planets transiting nearby M dwarfs have made it possible to characterize the atmospheres of terrestrial planets via follow-up spectroscopic observations. However, the number of such planets receiving low insolation is still small, limiting our ability to understand the diversity of the atmospheric composition and climates of temperate terrestrial planets. We report the discovery of an Earth-sized planet transiting the nearby (12 pc) inactive M3.0 dwarf Gliese 12 (TOI-6251) with an orbital period ($P_{\rm{orb}}$) of 12.76 days. The planet, Gliese 12b, was initially identified as a candidate with an ambiguous $P_{\rm{orb}}$ from TESS data. We confirmed the transit signal and $P_{\rm{orb}}$ using ground-based photometry with MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT3, and validated the planetary nature of the signal using high-resolution images from Gemini/NIRI and Keck/NIRC2 as well as radial velocity (RV) measurements from the InfraRed Doppler instrument on the Subaru 8.2 m telescope and from CARMENES on the CAHA 3.5 m telescope. X-ray observations with XMM-Newton showed the host star is inactive, with an X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity ratio of $\log L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm bol} \approx -5.7$. Joint analysis of the light curves and RV measurements revealed that Gliese 12b has a radius of 0.96 $\pm$ 0.05 $R_\oplus$, a 3$\sigma$ mass upper limit of 3.9 $M_\oplus$, and an equilibrium temperature of 315 $\pm$ 6 K assuming zero albedo. The transmission spectroscopy metric (TSM) value of Gliese 12b is close to the TSM values of the TRAPPIST-1 planets, adding Gliese 12b to the small list of potentially terrestrial, temperate planets amenable to atmospheric characterization with JWST., Comment: 29 pages (20 pages in main body), 13 figures (10 figures in main body). The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Migration is a major decision to leave one place and move to another, involving career and life changes. Migration flows provide people's comparisons across places about which is better to live by ``vote with their feet'' (Tiebout, 1956). However, is it possible to derive a consistent measure of the liveability of cities from these flows? We propose a combinatorial-Hodge-theory approach: the empirical liveability of cities is evaluated by a potential governing unbalanced, acyclic migrations between cities. As a case study, we measure the liveability of municipalities in Japan for specific populations such as families with small children and women of reproductive age in a population-decline society. Using these potentials as dependent variables, we perform a regression analysis to identify the factors relevant to liveability. We also derive analytical expressions that allow us to interpret as potentials the standards of living or utilities, estimated in the economics literature (Douglas & Wall, 1993; Douglas, 1997; Douglas & Wall, 2000; Wall, 2001; Nakajima & Tabuchi, 2011). The proposed method extracts a consistent metric of interval scale from the non-transitive, pairwise comparison between locations and provides substantial statistics for urban planning by policymakers.
