Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite of great medical and veterinary importance. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in wild boars hunted in the Slovak Republic in 2003. Examination of 320 wild boars revealed a seroprevalence of 8.1%. The majority of seropositive wild boars came from the north-western and southern regions of Slovakia. This study indicates that T. gondii infection is common in wild boars in the Slovak Republic, underlines its zoonotic potential and the importance of high standards of hygiene during the handling of game. The HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic has affected the health status of the population in many countries. Early symptomatic HIV infection includes persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL), which can be associated with opportunistic infections, e.g., toxoplasmosis and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. This study followed the occurrence of PGL, toxoplasmosis, and Cytomegalovirus infection in 32 HIV-positive patients and analyzed the clinical signs of disease in relation to the number of CD4 T lymphocytes. In monitored patients, the average number of CD4 T lymphocytes was 940.8 ± 396.7/µL of blood. Severe immunodeficiency was recorded in four persons, who also suffered from colitis and/or retinitis and pneumonitis. The number of CD4 T cells in patients with PGL was significantly lower than that in patients without lymphadenopathy. In 6 (18.8%) IgM and 11 (34.4%) IgG Toxoplasma gondii seropositive patients, the number of CD4 T lymphocytes was significantly lower than that in seronegative patients. The presence of IgM and IgG antibodies to Cytomegalovirus was recorded in all examined patients, and CMV infection clinically manifested in five persons. The occurrence of PGL, the higher viral load, and seropositivity to T. gondii were significantly related to decline in the CD4 T lymphocyte number. The clinical course of the diseases was influenced by the status of the patient's immunodeficiency and suggests ongoing immunosuppression and possible reactivation of both infections in all patients. The role of rodents as reservoirs of helminths of public health importance is not well known. The zoonotic potential of Syphacia spp. has been confirmed; therefore, the study aimed to estimate the occurrence of oxyurid nematodes in small rodents from pet shops and breeding clubs in Slovakia. Fecal samples of 586 pet rodents kept in 133 cages were collected between 2016 and 2018 and examined by Faust´s flotation method. Four species of oxyurid nematodes, Syphacia muris, S. obvelata, Aspiculuris tetraptera and Paraspidodera uncinata were detected. A. tetraptera was found in the faecal samples of all rodent species included in this survey. The number of positive boxes varied from 5.4% in hamsters to 70.0% with mice. The prevalence of Syphacia muris was highest in Mongolian gerbils where up to 75.0% boxes were positive; S. obvelata was found in 26.7% of boxes with mice, 25.0% of boxes with Mongolian gerbils and 3.2% of boxes with rats. The high prevalence of Syphacia spp. in all animal species points out the infection risk for humans. Animals offered for sale are often in close contact with human beings; therefore they should be regularly tested for parasites and then effectively dewormed.

Echinococcosis is a serious parasitic disease that ends lethally in 95% of untreated infected patients. It was first diagnosed in Slovakia in the year 2000. It is caused by the larval stage of a tapeworm belonging to the genus Echinococcus, which was assigned to the group "A" of zoonoses in the year 2004. The number of new infections is rising because of increasing percentage of infected red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Early and accurate diagnosis of infections with this parasite is essential for proper initiation of adequate therapy. Thanks to professional multidisciplinary efforts and new laboratory procedures, the number of correctly diagnosed cases has increased. Antimicrobial therapeutic approaches can lead to improved quality of life and better prognosis even if radical surgery is refused by the patient.

The aim of the present study was to collect data from Eastern Slovak Lowland, southern Slovakia, to assess risk of the spread of canine dirofilariosis. Climate and environmental conditions in the Eastern Slovak Lowland are ideally suitable for the occurrence of vector-borne diseases. In the past, an endemic locality of dangerous mosquito transmitted malaria was found in this area. Today, another zoonotic parasitic disease threatens--dirofilariosis. The results of the first detailed study revealed a 34.44% prevalence in dogs harbouring dirofilariae. D. repens was diagnosed in all infected specimen, with 2 individuals being co-infected also with D. immitis.

Dirofilariosis is a parasitic disease caused by helminths of the genus Dirofilaria. Climatic changes are considered to be main risk factors for dirofilariosis spreading. In the Slovak Republic, canine subcutaneous dirofilariosis was recorded for the first time in 2005. In 2007 the first coordinated research project started to detect possible endemic infections and to determine their magnitude. A total of 984 dogs were examined for the presence of microfilariae within 2007-2008. Modified Knott test and PCR were used for microfilariae detection and for Dirofilaria species identification. Dirofilariosis was diagnosed in 196 dogs which represents an overall prevalence of 19.9%. The majority of infected dogs came from southern regions of Slovakia. In the regions of Trnava and Nitra 45.2% and 31.4% of the dogs surveyed were infected, respectively. The highest prevalence of dirofilariosis was detected in shepherd and watch dogs (45.7%), and hunting dogs (40.5%). In the group of police dogs, 20.5% animals were infected. Dirofilaria repens was detected in all infected dogs. In seven animals co-infection with Dirofilaria immitis was present.
