52. Maine land: private property and hunting commons.

- Abstract
In the burgeoning literature on property rights, relatively little analysis has been done on the relation between property rights regimes (i.e. individual property, state property, clan property), and the types of goods that are produced. In Maine [USA], the decisions of landowners are strongly influenced by government regulation which creates a number of types of goods. In addition, some of the rights to that land are appropriated by the public who use this land for recreation. Although the right of the public to use private land is under attack, currently this forestland is both privately owned and a recreational commons. At the same time, new property institutions are coming into being. As a result, a single "privately owned" parcel of land produces private goods, public goods, common pool resources and toll goods all at the same time. The Maine case points out that the relationship between various kinds of property rights and goods is more complicated than has been assumed by many social scientists involved in the "commons" debate. FORESTS & forestry ,FOREST landowners ,LAND use ,LAND tenure ,HARVESTING ,DEFORESTATION - Abstract
Many of the world’s forests are being destroyed at a rapid rate. This article analyzes the decisions of landowners in Maine, where forests have been heavily harvested and much land has been converted to non-forest use. Data on these landowners and their land were obtained from primary and secondary sources, satellite change detection analysis, and structured interviews. We found that there are several different landowner groups making different harvesting decisions in response to different incentives. In northern Maine, deforestation occurred at a rapid rate in the 1970s–1990s due to the activities of paper companies, which were harvesting heavily in the aftermath of a spruce budworm epidemic and which were doing liquidation harvesting preparatory to leaving Maine. In the southern area of the state, deforestation is due primarily to small landowners converting land for development and contractors doing “cut and run” forestry. The Maine case shows that even in a small area, there can be multiple causes for deforestation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although territoriality of one kind or another is found in every society, our understanding of the way territorial systems come into being remains undeveloped. In this article, we use game theory to understand the evolution of institutional arrangements in the Maine lobster fishery. Nash equilibrium of models explains the three stages observed in the local-scale informal system of the past century. These stages are the result of decisions to invade or defend territorial lines that have changed over the course of time in response to a number of factors, including adoption of better technology, transportation costs, ecological changes, ability to organize defensive and offensive groups, and better law enforcement - all captured by crucial parameters of our model. We explore the broader implications of this industry study, especially the issues it raises for rational choice theory and the generation of institutions and norms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Obese individuals tend to resist the weight-regulating effects of exogenously administered leptin. A genetically engineered recombinant human variant ciliary neurotrophic factor (rhvCNTF) that signals through leptinlike pathways in the hypothalamus has been shown to bypass leptin resistance in animal models of obesity. Objective: To identify a safe and well-tolerated dose of rhvCNTF that causes weight loss in obese adults. Design, Setting, and Patients: Twelve-week, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, dose-ranging, multicenter clinical trial conducted at 2 university obesity clinics and at 5 independent clinical research clinics from March 2000 to August 2001, and including 173 nondiabetic obese adults, 82.6% of whom were women, with a mean (SD) body mass index of 41.1 (4.1). Interventions: Patients were randomly assigned to receive daily for 12 weeks subcutaneous injections of placebo (n = 32) or 0.3 µg/kg (n = 32), 1.0 µg/kg (n = 38), or 2.0 µg/kg (n = 33) of rhvCNTF. Another group received 1.0 µg/kg for 8 weeks and placebo for 4 weeks (n = 38), but they were not included in the primary analysis. All participants received instructions for a reduced-calorie diet (World Health Organization formula minus 500 kcal/d). Main Outcome Measures: Change in weight during the 12-week double-blind treatment period and proportion of patients who achieved a weight loss of at least 5%. Results: Of the 173 randomized patients, 123 (71%) completed the double-blind dosing period. Mean (SEM) changes in kilograms from baseline body weights were 0.1 (0.6) for placebo and -1.5 (0.6) for the 0.3, -4.1 (0.6) for the 1.0, and –3.4 (0.7) for the 2.0 µg/kg of rhvCNTF dosage groups (P<.001, test for trend). Two patients (8.7%) in the placebo and 2 (8.3%) in the 0.3-µg/kg, 8 (29.6%) in the 1.0-µg/kg, and 5 (26%) in the 2.0-µg/kg treatment groups achieved a weight loss of at least 5%. Recombinant human variant CNTF was generally... [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

70. Target tissue production and axonal transport of neurotrophin-3 are reduced in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

- Abstract
Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) acts as a target-derived neurotrophic factor for large calibre sensory neurones and plays a role in the maintenance of the adult phenotype of proprioceptive and mechanoreceptive fibres. Large fibre sensory neuropathy is common in diabetes mellitus and the aim of this study was to determine whether endogenous NT-3-dependent neurotrophic support was sub-optimal in the streptozotocin-diabetic rat. NT-3 gene expression was analysed by Northern blotting and ELISA in hindlimb skeletal muscle and found to be decreased by up to 70 % ( p < 0.05) in rats with 4–6 weeks of diabetes compared to aged-matched controls. Treatment of other diabetic rats with insulin prevented development of deficits of both NT-3 protein and of its mRNA. The deficits in target tissue production of NT-3 were coincident with significant decreases in its anterograde and retrograde axonal transport in sciatic nerve at 6 weeks of diabetes. The mRNA expression in lumbar dorsal root ganglia of the specific receptor for NT-3, trkC, was also down-regulated at 12 weeks of diabetes by 50 % ( p < 0.05). The observed decreases in NT-3 target tissue production and related axonal transport suggest that large calibre sensory neurones expressing trkC may be receiving sub-optimal neurotrophic support in experimental diabetes. HYPOTHALAMUS ,LEPTIN - Abstract
Abstract Similar to leptin, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) suppresses appetite and selectively reduces body fat in leptin-deficient ob/ob mice. To assess the relative importance of specific regions of the hypothalamus in mediating these effects, we administered a CNTF analogue (CNTF
Ax15 ) or leptin to mice made obese by administration of gold thioglucose (GTG), which destroys a well-defined portion of the medial basal hypothalamus. CNTFAx15 treatment reduced appetite and body weight in obese GTG-lesioned C57BL/6 mice, whereas leptin failed to effect similar changes regardless of whether treatment was initiated before or after the lesioned mice had become obese. Because leptin does not reduce food intake or body weight in most forms of obesity (a condition termed ‘leptin resistance’), we also investigated the actions of leptin in GTG-lesioned leptin-deficient (ob/ob ) mice. By contrast to C57BL/6 mice, leptin treatment reduced food intake and body weight in GTG-lesioned ob/ob mice, although the effect was attenuated. To further compare the neural substrates mediating the anorectic actions of leptin and CNTF, we determined the patterns of neurone activation induced by these proteins in the hypothalamus of intact and GTG-lesioned mice by staining for phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (pSTAT3). CNTFAx15 stimulated robust pSTAT3 signalling in neurones of the medial arcuate nucleus in both intact and lesioned C57BL/6 and ob/ob mice. Leptin administration stimulated pSTAT3 signalling in only a few neurones of the medial arcuate nucleus in intact or lesioned C57BL/6 mice, but elicited a robust response in intact or lesioned ob/ob mice. By contrast to CNTFAx15 , leptin treatment also resulted in prominent activation of STAT3 in several areas of the hypothalamus outside the medial arcuate nucleus. This leptin-induced pSTAT3 signal was at least as prominent in intact and GTG-lesioned C57BL/6 mice as it was in ob/ob mice, and thus was not correlated with appetite suppression or weight loss. These results indicate that the medial arcuate nucleus is a key mediator of appetite suppression and weight loss produced by CNTF and leptin, whereas GTG-vulnerable regions play a role only in leptin-induced weight loss. Other regions of hypothalamus in which pSTAT3 signal is induced by leptin may regulate energy metabolism through mechanisms other than appetite reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
When the Island had Fish is the story of a tiny island, Vinalhaven Maine, that offers a close look at the significant history of Maine fishing particularly, but also offers perspective on the impact of industrialized fishing on small fishing villages all over the United States and the world. Vinalhaven's documented habitation by fishermen dates back over 5000 years, and still today lobstering is the primary source of employment for its 1100 year round residents; islanders currently harvest lobsters at a rate almost unrivaled nationally. The book investigates the changing meanings of the notion of a “fishing community” and of community members changing relationships with the natural world and with international commerce. Through this broader lens, it sheds light on the way that species, including humans, are impacted by – and at moments contribute to - climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainable and unsustainable uses of natural resources. When the Island had Fish also provides a meditation on America's past and future. Vinalhaven's fishing history is in every way America's history. It's a story of habitations by native peoples and European-American settlers, their use of natural resources, their communities and kin, and their efforts to find ways to live in a harsh environment. Anyone interested in creating a viable collective future will learn from reading about the Penobscot Bay fisheries and fishermen, and about Vinalhaven's citizens'expansive knowledge of craft, husbandry, self-governance and community independence, and interdependence.

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • Bono—artist, activist, and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he's lived, the challenges he's faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him. • A VOGUE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR “A brilliant, very funny, very revealing autobiography-through-music. Maybe the best book ever written about being a rockstar.” —Caitlin Moran, award-winning journalist “When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim's lack of progress... With a fair amount of fun along the way.” —Bono As one of the music world's most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono's career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it's Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2's unlikely journey to become one of the world's most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him. Surrender's subtitle, 40 Songs, One Story, is a nod to the book's forty chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created forty original drawings for Surrender, which appear throughout the book.

- Abstract
The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland contains more than 3,800 entries covering the majority of family names that are established and current in Ireland, both in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. It establishes reliable and accurate explanations of historical origins (including etymologies) and provides variant spellings for each name as well as its geographical distribution, and, where relevant, genealogical and bibliographical notes for family names that have more than 100 bearers in the 1911 census of Ireland. Of particular value are the lists of early bearers of family names, extracted from sources ranging from the medieval period to the nineteenth century, providing for the first time, the evidence on which many surname explanations are based, as well as interesting personal names, locations and often occupations of potential family forbears. This unique Dictionary will be of the greatest interest not only to those interested in Irish history, students of the Irish language, genealogists, and geneticists, but also to the general public, both in Ireland and in the Irish diaspora in North America, Australia, and elsewhere.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Rising Above Lyme Disease is a comprehensive, whole-body approach to overcoming Lyme disease and reclaiming your life. Incidence of Lyme disease is skyrocketing. If caught early, antibiotics can often successfully treat it, but more often than not, Lyme is asymptomatic and evades diagnosis until it is a full-blown, chronic condition that requires a multi-faceted treatment plan. In Rising Above Lyme Disease, renowned naturopath and Lyme-literate doctor Julia Greenspan presents a Comprehensive and Alternative Medicine (CAM) approach for recovery for those who have been suffering with this disease for weeks, months, years, or even decades. Operating from the front lines of the epidemic in New England, she gives hope to those who thought there was none, or feel unheard by all those around them. Dr. Greenspan's integrative treatment plan addresses not only the body, but the mind as well, and includes: Standard protocols such as antibiotic and probiotic care, which can be essential to long-term healing (despite fears)Detoxing and dietary changes that help get proven resultsTherapies such as yoga, massage, earthing, and qi gongTherapies that dig deeper (when nothing else seems to be working) and focus on removing obstacles to healing, such as past trauma, negative beliefs about self, unhealthy lifestyle choices, genetics, hormone imbalance, environmental toxins, and other infections—all of which have a very real, and often overlooked, effect on recoveryThrough this comprehensive approach that focuses on the whole person and the very personal ways in which the disease may affect one's life, it is possible to find relief, become your best advocate, and ultimately, rise above Lyme.

U2 has sold more than 170 million records; won twenty-two Grammy Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, and two Golden Globes; and recorded fourteen studio albums. U2's members are some of the most influential and highly recognized philanthropists in the world. Since the band's modest start in a strife-torn Ireland in 1976, the ragtag group from Dublin has used success as a platform to raise sociopolitical awareness, explore spirituality, and launch highly successful charities. Featuring striking photographs, fascinating direct quotations, and informative sidebars, this captivating, lively text will reveal to readers how four musicians of dubious musical ability became one of the biggest bands in the world.

- Abstract
Jonathan Swift: Our Dean details the political climax of his remarkable career—his writing and publication of The Drapier's Letters (1724), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729)—stressing the relentless political opposition he faced and the numerous ways, including through his sermons, that he worked from his political base as Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral, psychologically as well as physically just outside the Dublin city walls, to attempt to rouse the Irish people to awareness of the ways that England was abusing them. This book faces squarely the likelihood that Swift had a physical affair with Esther Vanhomrigh between 1719 and 1723, and reassesses in the light of that likelihood his conflicting relations with Esther Vanhomrigh and Esther Johnson. It traces the many loving friendships with both men and women in Ireland that sustained Swift during the years when his health gradually failed him, enabling him to continue indefatiguably, both through his writings and his authority as Dean of St. Patrick's, to contribute to the public welfare in the face of relentless British attempts to squeeze greater and greater profits out of their Irish colony. Finally, it traces how Swift's political indignation led to his treating many people, friends and enemies, cruelly during the 1730s, even while his humor and his ability to make and attract new friends sustained themselves until his memory finally failed him in 1742. This biography, in two books, Jonathan Swift: Irish Blow-in and Jonathan Swift:Our Dean, comes closer than past biographies to capturing how it felt to Swift himself to live his life. - Abstract
This volume explores how mechanisms of postindustrial capitalism affect places and people in peripheral regions and de-industrializing cities. While studies of globalization tend to emphasize localities newly connected to global systems, this collection, in contrast, analyzes the disconnection of communities away from the market, presenting a range of ethnographic case studies that scrutinize the framework of this transformative process, analyzing new social formations that are emerging in the voids left behind by the de-industrialization, and introducing a discussion on the potential impacts of the current economic and ecological crises on the hyper-mobile model that has characterized this recent phase of global capitalism and spatially uneven development.

- Abstract
America's first anti–sex trafficking law, the 1910 Mann Act, made it illegal to transport women over state lines for prostitution “or any other immoral purpose.” It was meant to protect women and girls from being seduced or sold into sexual slavery. But, as Jessica Pliley illustrates, its enforcement resulted more often in the policing of women's sexual behavior, reflecting conservative attitudes toward women's roles at home and their movements in public. By citing its mandate to halt illicit sexuality, the fledgling Bureau of Investigation gained entry not only into brothels but also into private bedrooms and justified its own expansion.Policing Sexuality links the crusade against sex trafficking to the rapid growth of the Bureau from a few dozen agents at the time of the Mann Act into a formidable law enforcement organization that cooperated with state and municipal authorities across the nation. In pursuit of offenders, the Bureau often intervened in domestic squabbles on behalf of men intent on monitoring their wives and daughters. Working prostitutes were imprisoned at dramatically increased rates, while their male clients were seldom prosecuted. In upholding the Mann Act, the FBI reinforced sexually conservative views of the chaste woman and the respectable husband and father. It built its national power and prestige by expanding its legal authority to police Americans'sexuality and by marginalizing the very women it was charged to protect.

- Abstract
This book represents the third in a series of International Conferences related to Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's (PD) diseases. The first one took place in Eilat, Israel, in 1985; and the second one in Kyoto, Japan, in 1989. This book contains the full text of oral and poster presentations from the Third International Conference on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases: Recent Developments, held in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. on November 1-6, 1993. The Chicago Conference was attended by 270 participants. The Scientific Program was divided into nine oral sessions, a keynote presentation, and a poster session. The conference culminated in a Round Table Discussion involving all of the participants in the conference. The four and one-half day meeting served as an excellent medium for surveying the current status of clinical and preclinical developments in AD and PD. There were 59 oral presentations and 93 posters. This book incorporates a majority of both.

- Abstract
Combining personal anecdotes with the latest scientific research, this searingly honest memoir sheds new light on the darkness of depressionMillions people suffer from major depressive episodes. All of them want relief but, more importantly, most simply want to know that they are not alone. With gentle wry humor and a compassionate tone, David's Inferno offers a tale of realization, acceptance, and hope. It is neither prescriptive nor opinionated, seeing all forms of therapy as potentially beneficial in the continuum of care. Combining intensely personal reminiscences of a two-year nervous breakdown with contemporary insights on how manic-depression manifests and how it is diagnosed and treated; David Blistein shares his experiences to shed light on the darkness of depression for fellow travelers as well as those who care about them. David's Inferno serves as an ideal book for friends and family of those suffering from depression, helping them to better understand what their loved ones are experiencing. “Blistein takes us into the heart of his Inferno and combs through clinical and scientific literature to create a vivid, unforgettable image of this very personal form of hell.” —Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies

- Abstract
During the five decades since its origin, law and economics has provided an influential framework for addressing a wide array of areas of law ranging from judicial behaviour to contracts. This book will reflects the first-ever forum for law and economics scholars to apply the analysis and methodologies of their field to the subject of wildfire. The only modern legal work on wildfire, the book brings together leading scholars to consider questions such as: How can public policy address the effects of climate change on wildfire, and wildfire on climate change? Are the environmental and fiscal costs of ex ante prevention measures justified? What are the appropriate levels of prevention and suppression responsibility borne by private, state, and federal actors? Can tort liability provide a solution for realigning the grossly distorted incentives that currently exist for private landowners and government firefighters? Do the existing incentives in wildfire institutions provide incentives for efficient private and collective action and how might they be improved?

- Abstract
This book explores the U.S. forest service plans for responding to climate change. The mission of the Forest Service, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. These services are connected and sustained through the integrity of the ecosystems on these lands. Most of the urgent forest and grassland management challenges of the past 20 years, such as wildfires, changing water regimes and expanding forest insect infestations, have been driven in part by a changing climate and future impacts are projected to be even more severe.
