This paper uses already available concentration correction equations for fluorescent and scattered radiations to determine the concentration detection limits for any given element in X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Furthermore, an expression is derived for estimating the contributions of both Compton and Rayleigh scattered radiation to the background. From similar considerations, concerning Kramers' equation and the ZAF procedure, an estimate of the detection limits in electron microprobe analysis can be made.
