- Abstract
The ontogeny of shoaling behaviour in early‐stage larval capelin was examined for larvae raised under different conditions of prey concentration and disturbance. Shoals were evident from the first day of observation (day 2 post‐hatch) and time spent shoaling increased as the larvae got older. Both the number of follows and avoids decreased with age as the larvae spent more time in shoals. Disturbance appreared to have little affect on the development of shoaling. As they got older, larvae in high prey concentrations had some tendency to spend more time in shoals than fish in low prey concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
Detection of low-abundance mRNAs by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has become a standard technique to determine gene expression by tissues and cells in culture. The ability to determine relative or absolute copy number of specific mRNAs has been difJicult due to inadequate internal standards to control for sample-to-sample variation. The use of a synthetic RNA standard with identical sequences to the PCR primers allows reproducible quantitation between samples and assays. By designing multi-sequence templates, several specijic mRNAs can be quantitated using a single template. Addition of multiple templates to a single RT reaction allows the quantitation of a large number of targetsffom as little as 4 pg of total RNA. In this report, we present a series of seven primer/template systems to detect and quantitate 52 specific messages, including 26 growth factors and receptors, 8 extracellular matrix components, 10 matrix-rnodifying enzymes and their inhibitors and 8 cytokines.

- Abstract
1.Two cross sectional surveys in Minnesota on young men and 4 on older men showed no relationship between dietary cholesterol and the total serum cholesterol concentration over most of the ordinary intake range characteristic of American diets.2.Two surveys on the Island of Sardinia failed to show any difference in the serum cholesterol concentrations of men of the same age, physical activity, relative body weight and general dietary pattern but differing markedly in cholesterol intake.3.Careful study during 4 years of 33 men whose diets were consistently very low in cholesterol showed that their serum values did not differ from 35 men of the same age and economic status whose diets were very high in cholesterol.4.Comparisons made of 23 men before and after they had voluntarily doubled their cholesterol intakes and of 41 men who halved theirs failed to show any response in the serum cholesterol level in 4 to 12 months while the rest of the diet was more or less constant.5.A detailed study of the complete dietary intakes of 119 Minnesota businessmen failed to show any significant increase of serum cholesterol with increasing dietary cholesterol intake.6.In 4 completely controlled experiments on men the addition to or removal from the diet of 500 to 600 mg of cholesterol daily had no effect on the serum cholesterol fall produced by a rice-fruit diet or on the rise in changing from a rice-fruit diet to an ordinary American diet.7.In a completely controlled experiment on 5 physically healthy men the change from a rice-fruit diet containing 500 mg of cholesterol daily to the same diet devoid of cholesterol had no effect on the serum level.8.In a similar experiment with 13 men receiving 66 gm of fat daily there was no significant effect in changing from a cholesterol intake of 374 mg/day to one of 1369 mg/day. In another 12 men the reverse change was likewise without effect on the blood serum.9.It is concluded that in adult men the serum cholesterol level is essentially independent of the cholesterol intake over the whole range of natural human diets. It is probable that infants, children and women are similar.

- Abstract
The D0 experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid-argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run I, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to D0.

Introductory Sentence. In the trauma population intraoperative end tidal pCO2 and derived calculations have been shown to predict outcomes and identify patients requiring further resuscitation. We sought to evaluate in-flight end tidal pCO2 prior to arrival at a trauma center to predict outcome. Methods. After IRB approval, retrospective review was performed on all intubated adult trauma patients with complete records/end-tidal pCO2 data, transported by aeromedical transport teams to our level I trauma center over 4 years. The data were collected in-flight as well as in the emergency room. Results. Ninety-one patients met inclusion criteria. They were divided into two groups: survivors (68) and nonsurvivors (23). All patients had an airway established during transport. Conclusions. There was a correlation between end-tidal pCO2 during transport and patient survival. Low prehospital end-tidal pCO2 identified patients at high risk for death. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
