Refinement of micro- and nanofabrication in the semiconductor field has led to innovations in biomedical technologies. Nanotopography, in particular, shows great potential in facilitating drug delivery. The flexibility of fabrication techniques has created a diverse array of topographies that have been developed for drug delivery applications. Nanowires and nanostraws deliver drug cytosolically for in vitro and ex vivo applications. In vivo drug delivery is limited by the barrier function of the epithelium. Nanowires on microspheres increase adhesion and residence time for oral drug delivery, while also increasing permeability of the epithelium. Low aspect ratio nanocolumns increase paracellular permeability, and in conjunction with microneedles increase transdermal drug delivery of biologics in vivo. In summary, nanotopography is a versatile tool for drug delivery. It can deliver directly to cells or be used for in vivo delivery across epithelial barriers. This editorial highlights the application of nanotopography in the field of drug delivery.

With escalating global regulatory pressure for countries to adhere to emission laws, repurposing existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen-based commodities stands to be an economical solution. However, the effects of hydrogen embrittlement must be thoroughly considered for this application to avoid the unexpected catastrophic failure of these pipelines. The literature proposes several physicochemical embrittlement models. This paper reports one aspect of hydrogen embrittlement that remains to be quantified: the recovery of ductility (embrittlement) of mild steel specimens subjected to artificially accelerated hydrogen absorption via electrochemical charging as a function of time. The effects of charging duration and particularly the delay period between charging and mechanical tensile testing were investigated. Unsurprisingly, longer charging time shows a greater loss of elongation; however, a more extensive recovery of ductility correlated with longer charging time in the first few days after charging. The data also show that while the uncharged mild steel met all minimum required values for strength and elongation for the specified grade, there was a substantial variability in the elongation to failure. The same trends in variability of elongation translated to the hydrogen-charged specimens. Due to this extensive variability, failure to meet the elongation specification of the grade is reported based on the worst-case scenario obtained for a given set of samples for each exposure condition. These results have practical implications for the monitoring and testing of infrastructure exposed to hydrogen, particularly as this relates to industry planned operational shutdown schedules. Macrotermes termite mounds in the Kruger National Park occupy a significant part of the savanna landscapes, occurring at densities of up to 70 km−2 and often exceeding 10 m in width and 4 m in height. The mounds are usually devoid of trees, but have dense grass cover in wet years. As a result, these mounds form large patches of grassland amongst the wooded savanna. To our knowledge, it is not known why trees are largely excluded from the mounds. We analysed soil surface nutrient concentrations on and off mounds (0–2 cm deep, n = 80) to ascertain whether the availability of nutrients could be influencing competition between grasses and tree seedlings. The results showed that potential deficiencies in P, Ca, Cu, Zn and B in soils off the mounds are likely to be constraining plant growth. Notably, only B, with an average concentration of 0.19 mg kg−1, was likely to be limiting plant growth on the mounds. Notwithstanding likely interactions with herbivory and fire, we hypothesise that because grasses are far less susceptible to deficiencies of B than dicotyledonous trees, it is likely that grass competition with tree seedlings is considerably greater on mounds than off mounds.
