59. Appraisal of Land Cover and Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources: A Case Study of Mohmand Dam Catchment, Pakistan.

Abstract

Land cover change (LCC) and climate change (CC) impacts on streamflow in high elevated catchments are a great challenge to sustainable management and the development of water resources. This study evaluates the possible future impacts of both land cover and climate change on the streamflows in the Mohmand Dam catchment, Pakistan, by utilizing the semi-distributed hydrological model known as the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), along with the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) dataset of different global climate models (GCMs). The downscaling of the precipitation and temperature data was performed by the CMhyd software. The downscaled precipitation and temperature projections from the best performing GCM, out of four GCMs, under two shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP2 and SSP5) and future land cover conditions were forced in a calibrated hydrological model (SWAT model). Compared to the baseline period (1990–2015), the outputs from the selected GCM indicated an increase in the average monthly precipitation, and the maximum and minimum temperature in the study area under both the SSP2 and SSP5 scenarios, by the end of the 21st century. It is expected that the increase in precipitation for the period 2016–2100 is 10.5% and 11.4% under the SSP2 and SSP5 scenarios, respectively. Simulated results from the SWAT model showed significant impacts from the projected climate and land cover changes on Mohmand Dam flows that include: (a) an increase in the overall mean annual flow ranging from 13.7% to 34.8%, whereas the mean monthly flows of June, July and August decreased, and (b) a shift in the peak flows in the Mohmand catchment from July to June. It is concluded that the projected climate changes can substantially influence the seasonality of flows at the Mohmand Dam site. Abstract

Heavy metal accumulation in arable lands and water bodies has become one of the serious global issues among multitude of food security challenges. In particular, cadmium (Cd) concentration has been increasing substantially in the environment that negatively affects the growth and yield of important agricultural crops, especially wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). No doubt, nanotechnology is a revolutionary science but the comprehension of nanoparticle-plants interaction and its potential alleviatory role against metal stress is still elusive. Here, we investigated the mechanistic role of astaxanthin nanoparticles (AstNPs) in Cd stress amelioration and their interaction with wheat under Cd-spiked conditions. The AstNPs fabrication was confirmed through ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, where the particles showed characteristic peak at 423 nm. However, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses confirmed the presence of stabilized spherical-shaped nanocrystals of AstNPs within the size range of 12.03–30.37 nm. The hydroponic application of AstNPs (100 mg L−1) to Cd-affected wheat plants increased shoot height (59%), shoot dry weight (31%), nitrogen concentration (42%), and phosphorus concentration (26%) as compared to non-treated Cd affected seedlings. Moreover, AstNPs-treated plants showed reduction in acropetal Cd translocation (29%) in contrast to plants treated with Cd only. Under Cd-spiked conditions, AstNPs-treated plants displayed an improved nutrient profile (P, N, K+ and Ca2+) with a relative decrease in Na+ content in comparison with non-treated plants. Interestingly, it was found that AstNPs restricted the translocation of Cd to aerial plant parts by negatively regulating Cd transporter genes (TaHMA2 and TaHMA3), and relieved plants from oxidative burst by activating antioxidant machinery via triggering expressions of TaSOD and TaPOD genes. Consequently, it was observed that the application of AstNPs helped in maintaining the nutrient acquisition and ionic homeostasis in Cd-affected wheat plants, which subsequently improved the physiochemical profiles of plants under Cd-stress. This study suggests that AstNPs plausibly serve as stress stabilizers for plants under heavy metal-polluted environment.

94. Augmented Depolarizing Scatterer Based on Resonant Elements for Polarimetric Radar Calibration.

Abstract

A 3-in-1 depolarizing circular scatterer for the polarimetric radar calibration is proposed in this article. The proposed scatterer is low cost, compact, planar circuit, and well suited for the radar operating in a compact range, for example, chipless RFID technology. By the virtue of its circular shape, the rear side of the proposed scatterer acts as a metallic disk with strong copolarization backscattered signals. The front side is composed of eight resonant dipoles that make it nondepolarizing and depolarizing scatterers at the inclination of 0° and 45°, respectively. The features of proposed circular scatterer are tested as reference calibration objects for single antenna-based polarimetric radar calibration techniques. Two test objects are utilized: a dihedral tilted at 45° and a depolarizing multiresonant planar structure commonly called chipless RFID tag. The performance of proposed circular scatterer is also compared with the standard reference calibration objects: a metallic disk and a dihedral tilted at 22.5°. The performance of proposed circular scatterer is comparable to the standard reference calibration objects for the calibration techniques (namely, Type 1 and Type 2). Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a recently emerged pandemic caused by a novel virus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This disease is communicable and mainly affects the respiratory tract. The outbreak of this disease has greatly influenced human health and economic activities worldwide. The absence of any medication for this infection highlights the urgent need for the development of alternative methods for managing the spread of the disease. Our immune system operates based on a complex array of cells, processes, and chemicals that continuously protect our body from invading pathogens, including viruses, toxins, and bacteria. The present study was conducted to perform a comprehensive review of all dietary treatments for boosting immunity against viral infections. No study was found to explicitly support the use of any healthy foods or supplements to protect against COVID-19. However, this study offers details on well-researched functional foods and supplements that typically improve the immune response, which could be helpful against this newly emerged pandemic.
