Abstract

Dimerization of 2-(diformylmethylene)-3,3-dimethylindole by the action of tosyl chloride (TsCl) led to the creation of an epoxy-[1,5]-diazocine bicycle. The structure of the molecule resembles that of the naturally occurring C-curarine-I. The molecule shows significant cytotoxicity against cancer lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, but not toward the normal cell line CCD-841. A series of substituted 2-(diformylmethylene)-3,3-dimethylindoles was accordingly dimerized, and the products were studied for their cytotoxic activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tryptamine Schiff bases were prepared by the condensation reaction of ethanolic solution of tryptamine with 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde, 5-nitosalicylaldehyde and 3,5 ditertiarybutyl salicylalehyde. The ligands were coordinated to Zn(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II). All the ligands and complexes prepared have been characterized by spectroscopic methods such as IR spectra, ¹H and 13C NMR, UV-Vis, mass spectra, elemental C H N analysis, and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as atomic absorption spectroscopy for metal analysis. Spectroscopic data shows that the ligands are bonded to Zn and Cu metal centers via N and O atoms in a distorted tetrahedral geometry, whereas square planar geometry is proposed for Ni complexes. The biological activities of the ligands and complexes as anti ulcer agents have been investigated using Cimetidine as a standard drug. The screening was done on high and low doses (60mg/kg and 30mg/kg body weight respectively) on Sprague-Dawley rats which had been ulcer-induced by absolute ethanol. The ulcer lesion of the stomachs were identified and counted and then correlations between the effects of the different compound have been made. The results revealed very effective inhibition of gastric ulcer for ligands and complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Annona muricata is a member of the Annonaceae family and is a fruit tree with a long history of traditional use. A. muricata, also known as soursop, graviola and guanabana, is an evergreen plant that is mostly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The fruits of A. muricata are extensively used to prepare syrups, candies, beverages, ice creams and shakes. A wide array of ethnomedicinal activities is contributed to different parts of A. muricata, and indigenous communities in Africa and South America extensively use this plant in their folk medicine. Numerous investigations have substantiated these activities, including anticancer, anticonvulsant, anti-arthritic, antiparasitic, antimalarial, hepatoprotective and antidiabetic activities. Phytochemical studies reveal that annonaceous acetogenins are the major constituents of A. muricata. More than 100 annonaceous acetogenins have been isolated from leaves, barks, seeds, roots and fruits of A. muricata. Abstract

A functionalized β-dialdimine was prepared, bearing a 3,3-dimethylindoleninyl group at the meso-position and two N-phenolic groups. The structure contains three labile protons, which can be lost or migrate through tautomerism to provide an N2O2 coordination core. A number of divalent and trivalent metal ions (CuII, NiII, CoII/III, and MnIII) were accommodated inside the core, forming a series of intensely colored products consisting of a tricyclic MN2O2 chelate. In the resulting divalent metal complexes, the dialdimine ligand is deprotonated only at the two phenolic oxygen atoms and is thus dianionic, whereas in the trivalent metal complexes, the dialdiminato ligand is triply deprotonated. The copper and nickel complexes adopt square-planar geometries, whereas in the trivalent cobalt and manganese complexes, two neutral ancillary ligands complete an octahedral geometry around the metal center. In each case, the denticity of the diimino-diiminato ligand is four. The electrochemical oxidation of the copper and nickel complexes was studied by cyclic voltammetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
