We use Far Ultraviolet Spectrocopic Explorer (FUSE) observations to study interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the white dwarf WD1634-573 (d=37.1+/-2.6 pc). Combining our measurement of D I with a measurement of H I from Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer data, we find a D/H ratio toward WD1634-573 of D/H=(1.6+/-0.5)e-5. In contrast, multiplying our measurements of D I/O I=0.035+/-0.006 and D I/N I=0.27+/-0.05 with published mean Galactic ISM gas phase O/H and N/H ratios yields D/H(O)=(1.2+/-0.2)e-5 and D/H(N)=(2.0+/-0.4)e-5, respectively. Note that all uncertainties quoted above are 2 sigma. The inconsistency between D/H(O) and D/H(N) suggests that either the O I/H I and/or the N I/H I ratio toward WD1634-573 must be different from the previously measured average ISM O/H and N/H values. The computation of D/H(N) from D I/N I is more suspect, since the relative N and H ionization states could conceivably vary within the LISM, while the O and H ionization states will be more tightly coupled by charge exchange.

We present an analysis of interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the nearby white dwarf star HZ43A. The distance to this star is 68+/-13 pc, and the line of sight extends toward the north Galactic pole. Column densities of OI, NI, and NII were derived from spectra obtained by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the column density of DI was derived from a combination of our FUSE spectra and an archival HST GHRS spectrum, and the column density of HI was derived from a combination of the GHRS spectrum and values derived from EUVE data obtained from the literature. We find the following abundance ratios (with 2-sigma uncertainties): DI/HI = (1.66 +/- 0.28) x 10^-5, OI/HI = (3.63 +/- 0.84) x 10^-4, and NI/HI = (3.80 +/- 0.74) x 10^-5. The NII column density was slightly greater than that of NI, indicating that ionization corrections are important when deriving nitrogen abundances. Other interstellar species detected along the line of sight were CII, CIII, OVI, SiII, ArI, MgII, and FeII; an upper limit was determined for NIII. Observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) have been used to determine the column densities of D I, O I, and N I along seven sight lines that probe the local interstellar medium (LISM) at distances from 37 pc to 179 pc. Five of the sight lines are within the Local Bubble and two penetrate the surrounding H I wall. Reliable values of N(H I) were determined for five of the sight lines from HST data, IUE data, and published EUVE measurements. The weighted mean of D I/H I for these five sight lines is (1.52 +/- 0.08) x10-5 (1 sigma uncertainty in the mean). It is likely that the D I/H I ratio in the Local Bubble has a single value. The D I/O I ratio for the five sight lines within the Local Bubble is (3.76 +/- 0.20) x10-2. It is likely that the O I column densities can serve as a proxy for H I in the Local Bubble. The weighted mean for O I/H I for the seven FUSE sight lines is (3.03 +/-0.21) x10-4, comparable to the weighted mean (3.43 +/- 0.15) x10-4 reported for 13 sight lines probing larger distances and higher column densities (Meyer et al. 1998, Meyer 2001). The FUSE weighted mean of N I/H I for the five sight lines is half that reported by Meyer et al. (1997) for seven sight lines with larger distances and higher column densities. This result combined with the variability of O I/N I (six sight lines) indicates that at the low column densities found in the LISM, nitrogen ionization balance is important. Thus, unlike O I, N I cannot be used as a proxy for H I or as a metallicity indicator in the LISM. International audience; We present the first observations of the circumstellar (CS) disk system 51 Ophiuchi with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We detect several absorption lines arising from the unusual metastable atomic species N I (2D), N I (2P), and S II (2D). These levels lie 1.8-3.6 eV above the ground level and have radiative decay lifetimes of 2 days or less, indicating that the lines arise from warm CS gas. The high S/N FUSE spectra, obtained 6 days apart, also show time-variable absorption features arising from N I, N II, O I (1D), and Fe III, which are redshifted with respect to the stellar velocity. The resolved redshifted absorption extends over many tens of km s-1 (40 for N I, 100 for N II, 65 for O I (1D), and 84 for Fe III). We calculate column densities for all the variable infalling CS gasses, using the apparent optical depth method. The Fe III and N II infalling gasses must be produced through collisional ionization, and the ionization fraction of nitrogen suggests a gas temperature between 20,000 and 34,000 K. The infalling gas shows a peculiar, nonsolar composition, with nitrogen and iron more abundant than carbon. We also set upper limits on the line-of-sight column densities of H2 and CO. These observations strengthen the connection between 51 Oph and the older debris-disk system β Pictoris and indicate that there may be infalling planetesimals in the 51 Oph system.

We have analyzed FUSE observations of six hot white dwarf stars: four DA white dwarfs with T_eff >= 45000K, the DAO Feige55 (T_eff = 55000K), and the DA CD -38 10980 (T_eff = 24000K). Photospheric lines from SiIV, PV, and SVI can be observed in the majority of the five hotter objects. Feige55 shows also several other heavier elements. The measured abundances agree only partly with the predictions of the radiative levitation theory. We attribute this to current limitations of the models and the probable presence of mass loss. In the spectrum of CD -38 10980, we have observed the quasi-molecular satellites of Lbeta. This confirms theoretical predictions about the visibility range for these features.

We present the first observations of a Herbig Ae star with a circumstellar disk by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), as well as a simultaneous observation of the star obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The spectra of AB Aurigae show emission and absorption features arising from gasses that have a wide range in temperature, from hot OVI emission to cold molecular hydrogen and CO absorption. Emissions from the highly ionized species OVI and CIII present in the FUSE spectrum are redshifted, while absorption features arising from low-ionization species like OI, NI, and SiII are blueshifted and show characteristic stellar wind line-profiles. We find the total column density of molecular hydrogen toward AB Aur from the FUSE apectrum, N(H_2) = (6.8 +/- 0.5) x 10^19 cm^-2. The gas kinetic temperature of the molecular hydrogen derived from the ratio N(J=1)/N(J=0) is 65 +/- 4 K. The column density of the CO observed in the STIS spectrum is N(CO) = (7.1 +/- 0.5) x 10^13 cm^-2, giving a CO/H_2 ratio of (1.04 +/- 0.11) x 10^-6. We also use the STIS spectrum to find the column density of HI, permitting us to calculate the total column density of hydrogen atoms, the fractional abundance of H_2, and the gas-to-dust ratio.

To measure interstellar atomic deuterium abundances, we used the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) to obtain spectra of gamma2 Vel and zeta Pup over the wavelength interval 930-1150 A at a resolving power of 80,000. The interstellar D I features are resolved and cleanly separated from interstellar H I in the Ly-delta and Ly-epsilon profiles of both sight lines, and also in the Ly-gamma profile of zeta Pup. The D I profiles were modeled using a velocity template derived from several N I lines in the IMAPS spectra recorded at higher S/N. To find the best D I column density, we minimized chi-squares for model D I profiles that included not only the N(D I) as a free parameter, but also the effects of several potential sources of systematic error which could also be varied. For both stars, H I column densities were measured by analyzing Ly-alpha absorption profiles in a large number of IUE high dispersion spectra. Ultimately we found that D/H = 2.18(+0.36,-0.31)e-5 for gamma2 Vel and 1.42(+0.25,-0.23)e-5 for zeta Pup, values that contrast markedly with D/H derived in Paper I for delta Ori (the stated errors are 90% confidence limits). Evidently, the atomic D/H ratio in the ISM, averaged over path lengths of 250 to 500 pc, exhibits significant spatial variability. Furthermore, variations in D/H do not appear to be anticorrelated with N/H. Within the framework of standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the large value of D/H found toward gamma2 Vel is equivalent to a cosmic baryon density of Omega_B h^2 = 0.023 (+-0.002), which we regard as an upper limit since there is no correction for the destruction of deuterium in stars., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal

High resolution FUV echelle spectra showing absorption features arising from CI and CO gas in the Beta Pictoris circumstellar (CS) disk were obtained on 1997 December 6 and 19 using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). An unsaturated spin-forbidden line of CI at 1613.376 A not previously seen in spectra of Beta Pictoris was detected, allowing for an improved determination of the column density of CI at zero velocity relative to the star (the stable component), N = (2-4) x 10^{16} cm^{-2}. Variable components with multiple velocities, which are the signatures of infalling bodies in the Beta Pictoris CS disk, are observed in the CI 1561 A and 1657 A multiplets. Also seen for the first time were two lines arising from the metastable singlet D level of carbon, at 1931 A and 1463 A The results of analysis of the CO A-X (0-0), (1-0), and (2-0) bands are presented, including the bands arising from {13}^CO, with much better precision than has previously been possible, due to the very high resolution provided by the STIS echelle gratings. Only stable CO gas is observed, with a column density N(CO) = (6.3 +/- 0.3) x 10^{14} cm{-2}. An unusual ratio of the column densities of {12}^CO to {13}^CO is found (R = 15 +/- 2). The large difference between the column densities of CI and CO indicates that photodissociation of CO is not the primary source of CI gas in the disk, contrary to previous suggestion.

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectra of the white dwarf stars G191-B2B, GD 394, WD 2211-495, and WD 2331-475 cover the absorption features out of the ground electronic states of N I, N II, N III, O I, and Ar I in the far-ultraviolet, providing new insights on the origin of the partial ionization of the local interstellar medium (LISM) and, for the case of G191-B2B, the interstellar cloud that immediately surrounds the solar system. Toward these targets the interstellar abundances of Ar I, and sometimes N I, are significantly below their cosmic abundances relative to H I. In the diffuse interstellar medium, these elements are not likely to be depleted onto dust grains. Generally, we expect that Ar should be more strongly ionized than H (and also O and N, whose ionizations are coupled to that of H via charge-exchange reactions) because the cross section for the photoionization of Ar I is very high. Our finding that Ar I/H I is low may help to explain the surprisingly high ionization of He in the LISM found by other investigators. Our result favors the interpretation that the ionization of the local medium is maintained by a strong extreme-ultraviolet flux from nearby stars and hot gases, rather than an incomplete recovery from a past, more highly ionized condition.

The Lyman and Werner band systems of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) occur in the far UV range below 1200 A. The high sensitivity of the FUSE mission can give access, at moderate resolution, to hot stars shining through translucent clouds, in the hope of observing molecular cores in which deuterium is essentially in the form of HD. Thus, the measurement of the HD/H2 ratio may become a new powerful tool to evaluate the deuterium abundance, D/H, in the interstellar medium. We report here on the detection of HD toward the high extinction star HD 73882 [E(B-V)=0.72]. A preliminary analysis is presented.

Galactic D/H evaluations from observations completed in the far UV with first the Copernicus satellite then followed by IUE and the GHRS on the HST studies already suggest that D/H variations may be present in the interstellar medium. More recent IMAPS (the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph) observations confirm that conclusion while new STIS (which replaced the GHRS on board HST) studies seem to indicate the contrary. The situation is discussed here.Hopefully FUSE (the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, launched the 24th of June 1999) will give access to the D/H ratio in many different galactic sites. This will help us reach a better global view of the evolution of that key element, and thus better constrain any evaluation of its primordial abundance.

Water is predicted to be among, if not the most abundant molecular species after hydrogen in the atmospheres of close-in extrasolar giant planets (hot-Jupiters) Several attempts have been made to detect water on an exoplanet, but have failed to find compelling evidence for it or led to claims that should be taken with caution. Here we report an analysis of recent observations of the hot-Jupiter HD189733b taken during the transit, where the planet passed in front of its parent star. We find that absorption by water vapour is the most likely cause of the wavelength-dependent variations in the effective radius of the planet at the infrared wavelengths 3.6, 5.8 and 8 microns. The larger effective radius observed at visible wavelengths may be due to either star variability or the presence of clouds/hazes. We explain the most recent thermal infrared observations of the planet during secondary transit behind the star, reporting a non-detection of water on HD189733b, as being a consequence of the nearly isothermal vertical profile of the planet.s atmosphere. Our results show that water is detectable on extrasolar planets using the primary transit technique and that the infrared should be a better wavelength region than the visible, for such searches.

β Pictoris is a bright southern hemisphere star observed in 1983 by the IRAS satellite as presenting a large and unexpected IR excess. This excess was called the Vega-like phenomenon and quickly identified as due to circumstellar dust. Subsequently in 1984, using stellar coronography, dust was also directly seen as an edge-on disk extended to several hundreds of AUs. Since then, β Pictoris has been continuously observed. We present here a review of our present understanding of the β Pictoris circumstellar environment which still appears unique in the solar neighborhood. The circumstellar dust disk is predominantly made of relatively large particles (one micron or more) extending outward to more than 1000 AU and presenting a clearer (dust free) central region away to about 35 AU from the star. The gas is detected through stable and variable spectroscopic signatures revealing a permanent gas disk with sporadic inflows and also a few outflows. These are partially interpreted in terms of evaporation of kilometer-sized bodies very close to the star. Evaporation or destruction through collisions of kilometer-sized bodies seems to be needed also to explain both the dust as well as the very presence of the CO molecule detected in the circumstellar gas. Several indirect arguments along with the observation of a very peculiar photometric variation of the star suggests that even giant planets may have already formed in the β Pictoris system. β Pictoris is thus possibly the missing link between young stellar objects presenting proto-planetary circumstellar disks and much more evolved systems in which planets (at least giant ones) are already formed. β Pictoris is probably a unique place where we may now observe planetary formation as well as other phenomena that have taken place in the first 108 years of a young stellar system.

Using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have observed Lyα absorption against stellar chromospheres along six lines of sight, with additional observations of the Mg II H and K lines along five of the lines of sight and Fe II absorption along four of the lines of sight. We found absorption near the projected velocity of the local interstellar cloud (LIC) along three lines of sight. The velocity toward the stars β Gem and σ Gem was only marginally consistent with the LIC. The single interstellar component toward 31 Com had a velocity that was inconsistent with the projected LIC velocity. Three of the lines of sight showed a multicomponent velocity structure. For the star Eri we required an additional hot, low-density component which we have interpreted as a stellar hydrogen wall. The LIC temperatures derived from our data range from 7800 to 9700 K with values of the microturbulence parameter less than 2.0 km s-1. The measured D/H ratio for the LIC along every sight line is consistent with a value of 1.6 × 10-5, the best determined value being the β Cas line of sight with D/H = 1.7 ± 0.3 × 10-5.

We present Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared transmission spectroscopy of the transiting hot-Jupiter HAT-P-1b. We observed one transit withWide Field Camera 3 using the G141 lowresolution grism to cover thewavelength range 1.087-1.678μm. These time series observations were taken with the newly available spatial-scan mode that increases the duty cycle by nearly a factor of 2, thus improving the resulting photometric precision of the data. We measure a planetto-star radius ratio of Rp/R* = 0.117 09 ± 0.000 38 in the white light curve with the centre of transit occurring at 245 6114.345 ± 0.000 133 (JD). We achieve S/N levels per exposure of 1840 (0.061 per cent) at a resolution of δλ = 19.2 nm (R ~ 70) in the 1.1173-1.6549 μm spectral region, providing the precision necessary to probe the transmission spectrum of the planet at close to the resolution limit of the instrument. We compute the transmission spectrum using both single target and differential photometry with similar results. The resultant transmission spectrum shows a significant absorption above the 5s level matching the 1.4 μm water absorption band. In solar composition models, the water absorption is sensitive to the ~1 m bar pressure levels at the terminator. The detected absorption agrees with that predicted by a 1000K isothermal model, as well as with that predicted by a planetary-averaged temperature model. © 2013 The Authors. We present HST optical transmission spectra of the transiting hot Jupiter WASP-12b, taken with the STIS instrument. From the transmission spectra, we are able to decisively rule out prominent absorption by TiO in the exoplanet's atmosphere. Strong pressure-broadened Na and K absorption signatures are also excluded, as are significant metal-hydride features. We compare our combined broadband spectrum to a wide variety of existing aerosol-free atmospheric models, though none are satisfactory fits. However, we do find that the full transmission spectrum can be described by models which include significant opacity from aerosols: including Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering, tholin haze, and settling dust profiles. The transmission spectrum follows an effective extinction cross section with a power-law of index alpha, with the slope of the transmission spectrum constraining the quantity alphaT = -3528+/-660 K, where T is the atmospheric temperature. Rayleigh scattering (alpha=-4) is among the best fitting models, though requires low terminator temperatures near 900 K. Sub-micron size aerosol particles can provide equally good fits to the entire transmission spectrum for a wide range of temperatures, and we explore corundum as a plausible dust aerosol. The presence of atmospheric aerosols also helps to explain the modestly bright albedo implied by Spitzer observations, as well as the near black body nature of the emission spectrum. Ti-bearing condensates on the cooler night-side is the most natural explanation for the overall lack of TiO signatures in WASP-12b, indicating the day/night cold-trap is an important effect for very hot Jupiters. These finding indicate that aerosols can play a significant atmospheric role for the entire wide range of hot-Jupiter atmospheres, potentially affecting their overall spectrum and energy balance.(abridged), 19 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. We measure the transmission spectrum of WASP-19b from 3 transits using low-resolution optical spectroscopy from the HST Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The STIS spectra cover a wavelength range of 0.29-1.03 microns with resolving power R=500. The optical data are combined with archival near-IR data from the HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) G141 grism, covering the wavelength range 1.087-1.687 micron, with resolving power R=130. We obtain the transmission spectrum from 0.53-1.687 microns with S/N levels between 3000 and 11,000 in 0.1 micron bins. WASP-19 is a very active star, with optical stellar flux varying by a few per cent over time. We correct the transit light curves for the effects of stellar activity using ground-based activity monitoring with the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). While we were not able to construct a transmission spectrum using the blue optical data due to the presence of large occulted star spots, we were able to use the spot crossings to help constrain the mean stellar spot temperature. To search for predicted features in the hot-Jupiter atmosphere, we also define spectral indices for differential radius measurements to specifically search for the presence of TiO and alkali line features. Our measurements rule out TiO features predicted for a planet of WASP-19b's equilibrium temperature (2050 K) in the transmission spectrum at the 2.7-2.9 sigma confidence level, depending on atmospheric model formalism. The WFC3 transmission spectrum shows strong absorption features due to the presence of H2O, which is detected at the 4 sigma confidence level between 1.1 and 1.4 microns. The results indicate that WASP-19b is a planet with no or low levels of TiO and without a high C/O ratio. Observations of transits of the hot giant exoplanet HD 189733b in the unresolved HI Lyman-alpha line show signs of hydrogen escaping the upper atmosphere of the planet. New resolved Lyman-alpha observations obtained with the STIS spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope in April 2010 and September 2011 confirmed that the planet is evaporating, and furthermore discovered significant temporal variations in the physical conditions of its evaporating atmosphere. Here we present a detailed analysis of the September 2011 observations of HD 189733b, when an atmospheric signature was detected. We present specific methods to find and characterize this absorption signature of escaping hydrogen in the Lyman-alpha line, and to calculate its false-positive probability, found to be 3.6%. Taking advantage of the spectral resolution and high sensitivity of the STIS spectrograph, we also present new results on temporal and spectro-temporal variability of this absorption feature. We also report the observation of HD 189733b in other lines (SiIII at 1206.5A, NV at 1240A). Variations in these lines could be explained either by early occultation by a bow-shock rich in highly ionized species, or by stellar variations., Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present narrow-band photometric measurements of the exoplanet GJ 1214b using the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the OSIRIS instrument. Using tuneable filters we observed a total of five transits, three of which were observed at two wavelengths nearly simultaneously, producing a total of eight individual light curves, six of these probed the possible existence of a methane absorption feature in the 8770 - 8850 {\AA} region at high resolution. We detect no increase in the planet-to-star radius ratio across the methane feature with a change in radius ratio of $\Delta$R = -0.0007 $\pm$ 0.0017 corresponding to a scale height (H) change of -0.5 $\pm$ 1.2 H across the methane feature, assuming a hydrogen dominated atmosphere. We find a variety of water and cloudy atmospheric models fit the data well, but find that cloud-free models provide poor fits. These observations support a flat transmission spectrum resulting from the presence of a high-altitude haze or a water-rich atmosphere, in agreement with previous studies. In this study the observations are predominantly limited by the photometric quality and the limited number of data points (resulting from a long observing cadence), which make the determination of the systematic noise challenging. With tuneable filters capable of high resolution measurements (R ~ 600 - 750) of narrow absorption features, the interpretation of our results are also limited by the absence of high resolution methane models below 1 $\mu$m., Comment: 12 pages, including 14 figures and 1 table; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report new near ultraviolet HST/STIS observations of atmospheric absorptions during the planetary transit of HD209458b. We detect absorption in atomic magnesium (MgI), while no signal has been detected in the lines of singly ionized magnesium (MgII). We measure the MgI atmospheric absorption to be 6.2+/-2.9% in the velocity range from -62 to -19 km/s. The detection of atomic magnesium in the planetary upper atmosphere at a distance of several planetary radii gives a first view into the transition region between the thermosphere and the exobase, where atmospheric escape takes place. We estimate the electronic densities needed to compensate for the photo-ionization by dielectronic recombination of Mg+ to be in the range of 10^8-10^9 cm^{-3}. Our finding is in excellent agreement with model predictions at altitudes of several planetary radii. We observe MgI atoms escaping the planet, with a maximum radial velocity (in the stellar rest frame) of -60 km/s. Because magnesium is much heavier than hydrogen, the escape of this species confirms previous studies that the planet's atmosphere is undergoing hydrodynamic escape. We compare our observations to a numerical model that takes the stellar radiation pressure on the MgI atoms into account. We find that the MgI atoms must be present at up to ~7.5 planetari radii altitude and estimate an MgI escape rate of ~3x10^7 g/s. Compared to previous evaluations of the escape rate of HI atoms, this evaluation is compatible with a magnesium abundance roughly solar. A hint of absorption, detected at low level of significance, during the post-transit observations, could be interpreted as a MgI cometary-like tail. We have already shown that a planet orbiting β Pictoris is able to confine the circumstellar dust. Here we present new numerical simulations which improve this model. The new model takes into account destructive collisions between particles, and looks at the steady state between the collision and the dust replenishment. We show that there exists a critical value of the normal optical depth (τopc ∼ 4 × 10−4) and if the optical depth is smaller than this critical value in the resonant region (20–50 AU), asymmetric structures are created by the planet and maintained in spite of collisions. Although these structures cannot explain the asymmetries now observed in the disk, they could be a way to reveal bodies otherwise invisible by direct imagery.

The naked-eye star 55 Cancri hosts a planetary system with five known planets, including a hot super-Earth (55 Cnc e) extremely close to its star and a farther out giant planet (55 Cnc b), found in milder irradiation conditions with respect to other known hot Jupiters. This system raises important questions on the evolution of atmospheres for close-in exoplanets, and the dependence with planetary mass and irradiation. These questions can be addressed by Lyman-alpha transit observations of the extended hydrogen planetary atmospheres, complemented by contemporaneous measurements of the stellar X-ray flux. In fact, planet `e' has been detected in transit, suggesting the system is seen nearly edge-on. Yet, planet `b' has not been observed in transit so far. Here, we report on Hubble Space Telescope STIS Lyman-alpha and Chandra ACIS-S X-ray observations of 55 Cnc. These simultaneous observations cover two transits of 55 Cnc e and two inferior conjunctions of 55 Cnc b. They reveal the star as a bright Lyman-alpha target and a variable X-ray source. While no significant signal is detected during the transits of 55 Cnc e, we detect a surprising Lyman-alpha absorption of 7.5 +/- 1.8% (4.2 sigma) at inferior conjunctions of 55 Cnc b. The absorption is only detected over the range of Doppler velocities where the stellar radiation repels hydrogen atoms towards the observer. We calculate a false-alarm probability of 4.4%, which takes into account the a-priori unknown transit parameters. This result suggests the possibility that 55 Cnc b has an extended upper H I atmosphere, which undergoes partial transits when the planet grazes the stellar disc. Atmospheric escape has been detected from the exoplanet HD 209458b through transit observations of the hydrogen Lyman-alpha line. Here we present spectrally resolved Lyman-alpha transit observations of the exoplanet HD 189733b at two different epochs. These HST/STIS observations show for the first time, that there are significant temporal variations in the physical conditions of an evaporating planetary atmosphere. While atmospheric hydrogen is not detected in the first epoch observations, it is observed at the second epoch, producing a transit absorption depth of 14.4+/-3.6% between velocities of -230 to -140 km/s. Contrary to HD 209458b, these high velocities cannot arise from radiation pressure alone and require an additional acceleration mechanism, such as interactions with stellar wind protons. The observed absorption can be explained by an atmospheric escape rate of neutral hydrogen atoms of about 10^9 g/s, a stellar wind with a velocity of 190 km/s and a temperature of ~10^5K. An X-ray flare from the active star seen with Swift/XRT 8 hours before the second-epoch observation supports the idea that the observed changes within the upper atmosphere of the planet can be caused by variations in the stellar wind properties, or by variations in the stellar energy input to the planetary escaping gas (or a mix of the two effects). A 20cm 2 CCD mosaic camera has been especially built to search for dark galactic halo objects by the gravitational microlensing effect. The sensitive area is made of 16 edge-buttable CCDs developped by Thomson-CTS, with 23×23 µm 2 pixels. The 35 kg camera housing and mechanical equipment is presented. The associated electronics and data acquisition system are described in a separate paper. The camera resides at the focal plane of a 40 cm, f/10, Ferson reflector. The instrument has been in operation since December 1991 at the La Silla Observatory (ESO).

To summarize, the readout and the control system of the CCD mosaic camera are running since December 1991 at the La Silla Observatory (ESO). The overall performance of the camera has been good. About 12000 pictures (data and flat-fields) have been successfully registered up to now. We will report in the near future preliminary scientific results of the EROS experiment.

Repeated spectroscopic observations of β Pictoris have been performed since 1985 and revealed the presence, in many metallic lines like Ca II, Mg II, Fe II, …, of strong sporadic circumstellar absorption, redshifted by tens to hundreds of km s-1 with respect to the star, and highly time-variable (time-scales of days or hours).

The inner regions of the circumstellar disk around β Pictoris might be dust-free due to a possible planet which may have cleared up dust particles. We present a new observational technique based on the use of an anti-blooming CCD in order to directly image this zone. The structure of the disk is revealed down to 2 arcsec from the star (30 AU). We show that the β Pic disk brightness is neutral in V, R, and I c , but drops down when going inward in B, possibly related to a change in the dust composition. Also, a slight disk asymmetry is present but inverted from the outer to the inner zones.

We report the measurement of the spin-orbit angle of the extra-solar planets HAT-P-8 b, HAT-P-9 b, HAT-P-16 b and HAT-P-23 b, thanks to spectroscopic observations performed at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence with the SOPHIE spectrograph on the 1.93-m telescope. Radial velocity measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect show the detection of an apparent prograde, aligned orbit for all systems. The projected spin-orbit angles are found to be lambda=-17 deg (+9.2,-11.5), -16 deg (8), -10 deg (16), +15 deg (22) for HAT-P-8, HAT-P-9, HAT-P-16 and HAT-P-23 respectively, with corresponding projected rotational velocities of 14.5 (0.8), 12.5 (1.8), 3.9 (0.8), and 7.8 (1.6) km/s. These new results increase to 37 the number of accurately measured spin-orbit angles in transiting extrasolar systems. We conclude by drawing a tentative picture of the global behaviour of orbital alignement, involving the complexity and diversity of possible mechanisms., accepted in A&A

On 5-6 June 2012, Venus will be transiting the Sun for the last time before 2117. This event is an unique opportunity to assess the feasibility of the atmospheric characterisation of Earth-size exoplanets near the habitable zone with the transmission spectroscopy technique and provide an invaluable proxy for the atmosphere of such a planet. In this letter, we provide a theoretical transmission spectrum of the atmosphere of Venus that could be tested with spectroscopic observations during the 2012 transit. This is done using radiative transfer across Venus' atmosphere, with inputs from in-situ missions such as Venus Express and theoretical models. The transmission spectrum covers a range of 0.1-5 {\mu}m and probes the limb between 70 and 150 km in altitude. It is dominated in UV by carbon dioxide absorption producing a broad transit signal of ~20 ppm as seen from Earth, and from 0.2 to 2.7 {\mu}m by Mie extinction (~5 ppm at 0.8 {\mu}m) caused by droplets of sulfuric acid composing an upper haze layer above the main deck of clouds. These features are not expected for a terrestrial exoplanet and could help discriminating an Earth-like habitable world from a cytherean planet., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. The Kepler mission has detected transits and occultations of a hot compact object around an early-type star, the Kepler Object of Interest KOI 74. The mass of this transiting object was photometrically assessed in a previous study using the presence of the relativistic beaming effect (so-called `Doppler boosting') in the light curve. Our aim was to provide a spectroscopic validation of this pioneering approach. We measured the radial velocity variations of the A1V star KOI 74 with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the 1.93-m telescope of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (France). Radial velocity measurements of this star are challenging because of the high level of stellar pulsations and the few available spectral lines. Using a technique dedicated to early-type main-sequence stars, we measured radial velocity variations compatible with a companion of mass 0.252+/-0.025 Msun, in good agreement with the value derived from the Kepler light curve. This work strengthens the scenario suggesting that KOI 74 is a blue straggler orbited by a stellar core despoiled of its envelope, the low-mass white dwarf KOI 74b., 8 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. International audience; An error was detected in the code used for the analysis of the HD209458b sodium profile (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2011). Here we present an updated T-P profile and briefly discuss the consequences.

We observed with the SOPHIE spectrograph (OHP, France) the transit of the HAT-P-6b exoplanet across its host star. The resulting stellar radial velocities display the Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly and reveal a retrograde orbit: the planetary orbital spin and the stellar rotational spin point towards approximately opposite directions. A fit to the anomaly measures a sky-projected angle lambda = 166 +/- 10 degrees between these two spin axes. All seven known retrograde planets are hot jupiters with masses M_p < 3 M_Jup. About two thirds of the planets in this mass range however are prograde and aligned (lambda ~ 0). By contrast, most of the more massive planets (M_p > 4 M_Jup) are prograde but misaligned. Different mechanisms may therefore be responsible for planetary obliquities above and below ~3.5 M_Jup., 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

In this preliminary study, we outline for the first time the effect of non-thermal line broadening processes (turbulence, random waves, convection ,...) on the shape and intensity of the H Ly-α line resonance scattered from the atmosphere of Jupiter and we show how a non-thermal velocity field, confined to the bulge region, in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, may account for most of the H Ly-α bulge features. Both the shape and the brightness of the Ly-α line from the bulge region as reported by the IUE instrument and the Voyager UV Spectrometer can be recovered assuming resonant scattering with a total atomic hydrogen [H]∼ 4 × 1017 cm−2, and a non-thermal component [H]∼ 2 × 1015 cm−2 above the thermopause.

We present the laboratory demonstration of a very high-dynamic range imaging instrument FIRST (Fibered Imager foR Single Telescope). FIRST combines the techniques for aperture masking and a single-mode fiber interferometer to correct wavefront errors, which leads to a very high-dynamic range up to 106 around very near the central object (~ λ/D) at visible to near-infrared wavelengths. Our laboratory experiments successfully demonstrated that the original image can be reconstructed through a pupil remapping system. A first on-sky test will be performed at the Lick Observatory 3- m Shane telescope for operational tests in the summer of 2010.

We present new observations of a transit of the 111-day-period exoplanet HD80606b. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope and its IRAC camera on the post-cryogenic mission, we performed a 19-hour-long photometric observation of HD80606 that covers the full transit of 13-14 January 2010. We complement this photometric data by new spectroscopic observations that we simultaneously performed with SOPHIE at Haute-Provence Observatory. This provides radial velocity measurements of the first half of the transit that was previously uncovered with spectroscopy. This new data set allows the parameters of this singular planetary system to be significantly refined. We obtained a planet-to-star radius ratio R_p/R_* = 0.1001 +/- 0.0006 that is slightly lower than the one measured from previous ground observations. We detected a feature in the Spitzer light curve that could be due to a stellar spot. We also found a transit timing about 20 minutes earlier than the ephemeris prediction; this could be caused by actual TTVs due to an additional body in the system or by underestimated systematic uncertainties. The sky-projected angle between the spin-axis of HD80606 and the normal to the planetary orbital plane is found to be lambda = 42 +/- 8 degrees thanks to the fit of the Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly. This allows scenarios with aligned spin-orbit to be definitively rejected. Over the twenty planetary systems with measured spin-orbit angles, a few of them are misaligned; this is probably the signature of two different evolution scenarios for misaligned and aligned systems, depending if they experienced or not gravitational interaction with a third body. As in the case of HD80606b, most of the planetary systems including a massive planet are tilted; this could be the signature of a separate evolution scenario for massive planets in comparison with Jupiter-mass planets., 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a new primary transit observation of the hot-jupiter HD189733b, obtained at 3.6 microns with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. Previous measurements at 3.6 microns suffered from strong systematics and conclusions could hardly be obtained with confidence on the water detection by comparison of the 3.6 and 5.8 microns observations. We use a high S/N Spitzer photometric transit light curve to improve the precision of the near infrared radius of the planet at 3.6 microns. The observation has been performed using high-cadence time series integrated in the subarray mode. We are able to derive accurate system parameters, including planet-to-star radius ratio, impact parameter, scale of the system, and central time of the transit from the fits of the transit light curve. We compare the results with transmission spectroscopic models and with results from previous observations at the same wavelength. We obtained the following system parameters: R_p/R_\star=0.15566+0.00011-0.00024, b=0.661+0.0053-0.0050, and a/R_\star=8.925+0.0490-0.0523 at 3.6 microns. These measurements are three times more accurate than previous studies at this wavelength because they benefit from greater observational efficiency and less statistic and systematic errors. Nonetheless, we find that the radius ratio has to be corrected for stellar activity and present a method to do so using ground-based long-duration photometric follow-up in the V-band. The resulting planet-to-star radius ratio corrected for the stellar variability is in agreement with the previous measurement obtained in the same bandpass (Desert et al. 2009). We also discuss that water vapour could not be evidenced by comparison of the planetary radius measured at 3.6 and 5.8 microns, because the radius measured at 3.6 microns is affected by absorption by other species, possibly Rayleigh scattering by haze., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present here for the first time a Lyman-α image of the north polar region of Jupiter obtained with the Faint Object Camera (FOC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope a few hours after the encounter of the ULYSSES spacecraft with Jupiter. The presence of high latitude regions of enhanced emission is clearly observed. A comparison with the location of the “UVS oval”, the Io (L = 6) and high-latitude field-line footprints shows that the best agreement is obtained with the L ≥ 15 footprint and the UVS oval which are close to each other for the particular longitudinal sector (30° < λIII < 210°) observed. These two L-shells correspond to two possible sources of precipitation: particles originating respectively from the region of the plasma torus of Io in a distorted magnetic field or particles from the distant magnetosphere by analogy with the terrestrial aurora. The first direct determination of the latitudinal extent of the oval and of its intensity is made and compared with previous estimates.

(abridged) In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around early-type main-sequence stars, we present the results obtained on the early F-type star Theta Cygni. Elodie and Sophie at OHP were used to obtain the spectra. Our dedicated radial-velocity measurement method was used to monitor the star's radial velocities over five years. We also use complementary, high angular resolution and high-contrast images taken with PUEO at CFHT. We show that Theta Cygni radial velocities are quasi-periodically variable, with a ~150-day period. These variations are not due to the ~0.35-Msun stellar companion that we detected in imaging at more than 46 AU from the star. The absence of correlation between the bisector velocity span variations and the radial velocity variations for this 7 km/s vsini star, as well as other criteria indicate that the observed radial velocity variations are not due to stellar spots. The observed amplitude of the bisector velocity span variations also seems to rule out stellar pulsations. However, we observe a peak in the bisector velocity span periodogram at the same period as the one found in the radial velocity periodogram, which indicates a probable link between these radial velocity variations and the low amplitude lineshape variations which are of stellar origin. Long-period variations are not expected from this type of star to our knowledge. If a stellar origin (hence of new type) was to be confirmed for these long-period radial velocity variations, this would have several consequences on the search for planets around main-sequence stars, both in terms of observational strategy and data analysis. An alternative explanation for these variable radial velocities is the presence of at least one planet of a few Jupiter masses orbiting at less than 1 AU. (abridged), 9 pages, accepted in AA

We present Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared transit photometry of the nearby hot-Jupiter HD189733b. The observations were taken with the NICMOS instrument during five transits, with three transits executed with a narrowband filter at 1.87 microns and two performed with a narrowband filter at 1.66 microns. Our observing strategy using narrowband filters is insensitive to the usual HST intra-orbit and orbit-to-orbit measurement of systematic errors, allowing us to accurately and robustly measure the near-IR wavelength dependance of the planetary radius. Our measurements fail to reproduce the Swain et al. absorption signature of atmospheric water below 2 microns at a 5-sigma confidence level. We measure a planet-to-star radius contrast of 0.15498+/-0.00035 at 1.66 microns and a contrast of 0.15517+/-0.00019 at 1.87 microns. Both of our near-IR planetary radii values are in excellent agreement with the levels expected from Rayleigh scattering by sub-micron haze particles, observed at optical wavelengths, indicating that upper-atmospheric haze still dominates the near-IR transmission spectra over the absorption from gaseous molecular species at least below 2 microns., 9 pages, 7 figures. R Coronae Borealis stars (RCB) are a rare type of evolved carbon-rich supergiant stars that are increasingly thought to result from the merger of two white dwarfs, called the Double degenerate scenario. This scenario is also studied as a source, at higher mass, of type Ia Supernovae (SnIa) explosions. Therefore a better understanding of RCBs composition would help to constrain simulations of such events. We searched for and studied RCB stars in the EROS Magellanic Clouds database. We also extended our research to DY Per type stars (DYPers) that are expected to be cooler RCBs (T~3500 K) and much more numerous than their hotter counterparts. The light curves of ~70 millions stars have been analysed to search for the main signature of RCBs and DYPers: a large drop in luminosity. Follow-up optical spectroscopy was used to confirm each photometric candidate found. We have discovered and confirmed 6 new Magellanic Cloud RCB stars and 7 new DYPers, but also listed new candidates: 3 RCBs and 14 DYPers. We estimated a range of Magellanic RCB shell temperatures between 360 and 600 K. We confirm the wide range of absolute luminosity known for RCB stars, M_V~-5.2 to -2.6. Our study further shows that mid-infrared surveys are ideal to search for RCB stars, since they have thinner and cooler circumstellar shells than classical post-AGB stars. In addition, by increasing the number of known DYPers by ~400%, we have been able to shed light on the similarities in the spectral energy distribution between DYPers and ordinary carbon stars. We also observed that DYPer circumstellar shells are fainter and hotter than those of RCBs. This suggests that DYPers may simply be ordinary carbon stars with ejection events, but more abundance analysis is necessary to give a status on a possible evolutionnary connexion between RCBs and DYPers., 22 pages, 38 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

International audience; The Fresnel Interferometric Imager has been proposed to the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision plan as a class L mission. This mission addresses several themes of the CV Plan: Exoplanet study, Matter in extreme conditions, and The Universe taking shape. This paper is an abridged version of the original ESA proposal. We have removed most of the technical and financial issues, to concentrate on the instrumental design and astrophysical missions. The instrument proposed is an ultra-lightweight telescope, featuring a novel optical concept based on diffraction focussing. It yields high dynamic range images, while releasing constraints on positioning and manufacturing of the main optical elements. This concept should open the way to very large apertures in space. In this two spacecraft formation-flying instrument, one spacecraft holds the focussing element: the Fresnel interferometric array; the other spacecraft holds the field optics, focal instrumentation, and detectors. The Fresnel array proposed here is a 3.6 ×3.6 m square opaque foil punched with 105 to 106 void “subapertures”. Focusing is achieved with no other optical element: the shape and positioning of the subapertures (holes in the foil) is responsible for beam combining by diffraction, and 5% to 10% of the total incident light ends up into a sharp focus. The consequence of this high number of subapertures is high dynamic range images. In addition, as it uses only a combination of vacuum and opaque material, this focussing method is potentially efficient over a very broad wavelength domain. The focal length of such diffractive focussing devices is wavelength dependent. However, this can be corrected. We have tested optically the efficiency of the chromatism correction on artificial sources (500 < λ < 750 nm): the images are diffraction limited, and the dynamic range measured on an artificial double source reaches 6.2 10 ‑ 6. We have also validated numerical simulation algorithms for larger Fresnel interferometric arrays. These simulations yield a dynamic range (rejection factor) close to 10 ‑ 8 for arrays such as the 3.6 m one we propose. A dynamic range of 10 ‑ 8 allows detection of objects at contrasts as high as than 10 ‑ 9 in most of the field. The astrophysical applications cover many objects in the IR, visible an UV domains. Examples are presented, taking advantage of the high angular resolution and dynamic range capabilities of this concept.

A number of microlensing dark-matter surveys have produced tens of millions of light curves of individual background stars. These data provide an unprecedented opportunity for systematic studies of whole classes of variable stars and their host galaxies. We aim to use the EROS-2 survey of the Magellanic Clouds to detect and study the population of beat Cepheids (BCs) in both Clouds. BCs pulsating simultaneously in the first overtone and fundamental modes (FO/F) or in the second and first overtone modes (SO/FO) are of particular interest. Using special software designed to search for periodic variables, we have scanned the EROS-2 data base for variables in the typical period range of Cepheids. Metallicities of FO/F objects were then calculated from linear nonadiabatic convective stellar models. We identify 74 FO/F BCs in the LMC and 41 in the SMC, and 173 and 129 SO/FO pulsators in the LMC and SMC, respectively; 185 of these stars are new discoveries. For nearly all the FO/F objects we determine minimum, mean, and maximum values of the metallicity. The EROS data have expanded the samples of known BCs in the LMC by 31%, in the SMC by 110%. The FO/F objects provide independent measures of metallicities in these galaxies. Transmission spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing atmospheres of extra‐solar planets when transiting their parent star. The first detection of atmospheric species was NaI in HD209458b (nicknamed Osiris), thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) sensitivity reaching ∼10−4 in relative absorption depth. Still with HST, HI, OI and CII were discovered in the far UV. Despite recent controversy (Ben‐Jaffel 2007), everyone now recognize that these observations must be interpreted by the evaporation of the so called “hot Jupiters” with an escape rate of the order of 1010 g⋅s−1 (Ben‐Jaffel 2008; Vidal‐Madjar et al. 2008). More recently H+ and H2 via Rayleigh scattering have also been detected using UV spectroscopy. This underlines once more the potentialities of the UV‐farUV spectral domain where a large number of diagnostic lines is available. The next steps will be the detection and characterization of additional species toward further extra‐solar planets, hopefully down to Earth‐like worlds which will r...

The EROS-2 project has been designed to search for microlensing events towards any dense stellar field. The densest parts of the Galactic spiral arms have been monitored to maximize the microlensing signal expected from the stars of the Galactic disk and bulge. 12.9 million stars have been monitored during 7 seasons towards 4 directions in the Galactic plane, away from the Galactic center. A total of 27 microlensing event candidates have been found. Estimates of the optical depths from the 22 best events are provided. A first order interpretation shows that simple Galactic models with a standard disk and an elongated bulge are in agreement with our observations. We find that the average microlensing optical depth towards the complete EROS-cataloged stars of the spiral arms is $\bar{\tau} =0.51\pm .13\times 10^{-6}$, a number that is stable when the selection criteria are moderately varied. As the EROS catalog is almost complete up to $I_C=18.5$, the optical depth estimated for the sub-sample of bright target stars with $I_C.11\times 10^{-6}$) is easier to interpret. The set of microlensing events that we have observed is consistent with a simple Galactic model. A more precise interpretation would require either a better knowledge of the distance distribution of the target stars, or a simulation based on a Galactic model. We report the detection of the primary transit of the extra-solar planet HD 80606 b, thanks to photometric and spectroscopic observations performed at Observatoire de Haute-Provence, simultaneously with the CCD camera at the 120-cm telescope and the SOPHIE spectrograph at the 193-cm telescope. We observed the whole egress of the transit and partially its central part, in both data sets with the same timings. The ingress occurred before sunset and was not observed. The full duration of the transit was between 9.5 and 17.2 hours. The data allows the planetary radius to be measured (Rp = 0.9 +- 0.1 RJup) and other parameters of the system to be refined. Radial velocity measurements show the detection of a prograde Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, and provide a hint for a spin-orbit misalignment. If confirmed, this misalignment would corroborate the hypothesis that HD 80606 b owes its unusual orbital configuration to Kozai migration. HD 80606 b is by far the transiting planet on the longest period detected today. Its unusually small radius reinforces the observed relationship between the planet radius and the incident flux received from the star and opens new questions for theory. Orbiting a quite bright star (V=9), it opens opportunities to numerous follow-up studies., Comment: revised after acceptance

The purpose of this review is to recall the different approaches that have been used to evaluate the cosmic deuterium abundance. From the various difficulties inherent to the observational techniques used, the most reasonable present day abundance value is shown to be of the order of 10 −5 . The comparison of this estimate with other light elements abundance evaluations seems to represent a spectacular confirmation of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. However it is shown that the situation is still unclear and that observations in new astrophysical sites are needed in order either to confirm this model or to favour alternative scenarios.

During the last 15 years, a lot of different kinds of data allowed to probe the local interstellar medium down to the inner solar system. It has yield a simple picture in which the Sun is located within a warm, low density region flowing past the solar system, this region beeing immersed in a very hot and tenuous larger local bubble. However, many problems remain, especially concerning the velocity field. From high quality ground-based observations, it becomes obvious that this picture should be much more complex, with at least three velocity components over only 5 parsecs. But the connection between the interplanetary and the local interstellar media is still to be performed.
