Prickly pear seed is a source of the most expensive oil in the world, which is rich in vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Its extraction generates a large quantity of press cake. These two by-products need to be valued. The current study aimed to assess the fatty acid composition of oil and the phytochemical composition of press cake. In addition, the antioxidant and the inhibition of thermal protein denaturation effects of both Algerian seed by-products were evaluated with their inhibitory action against the activities of urease, tyrosinase, α-amylase, and cholinesterase enzymes. The GC MS analysis result revealed the richness of our oil in linoleic (74%) and palmitic (13%) acids methyl esters, respectively. The chemical composition of press cake was characterized by a high value of dry matter (94.94 ± 0.05%), especially the carbohydrates (85.13 ± 0.94%). The results of antioxidant activity presented by IC50 and A0.5 ranged from 7.51 ± 0.03 to 88.10 ± 0.92 µg/mL. Furthermore, the IC50 values were 40.19 ± 1.21 and 61.18 ± 0.03 µg/mL in thermal protein denaturation assay, and ranging from 22.97 ± 0.72 to 385.99 ± 0.27 µg/mL for the inhibition of enzymatic activities. These results indicate that the studied oil can be one of the strongest oils for its impressive effects and also encourage us to reuse its press cake in feed livestock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanotechnology offers promising opportunities in combating infectious agents, especially multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR), which is a major concern in modern times. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are effective in delivering therapeutic agents to living systems due to their biocompatibility and bioactivity, making them effective against infectious microbes and also allowing them to be applied as an effective anticancer instrument. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of ZnO-NPs against P. aeruginosa, a multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterium in combination with Piperacillin-Tazobactam, as well as the in vitro effect of anticancer activity on MCF-7 and HepG2 cell lines. Piperacillin-Tazobactam, are beta-lactam antibiotics highly effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and recommended for the empirical treatment of Febrile Neutropenia (FN) after chemotherapy. ZnO-NPs of variable size (designated as ZnO-NPs-A, ZnO-NPs-B, and ZnO-NPs-C with 35±2.5 nm, 50±2 nm, and 65±3 nm mean sizes, respectively) and Piperacillin-Tazobactam alone and in combination were used for the study. The extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBLs) producing MDR P. aeruginosa strain sensitivity profiling towards different combinations of ZnO-NPs and Piperacillin-Tazobactam was measured. There was no synergistic effect observed against growth inhibition of P. aeruginosa. The combined dose of ZnO-NPs-A and Piperacillin-Tazobactam showed great antibacterial efficacy even as compared to the pure drug against P. aeruginosa. Similarly, the Piperacillin-Tazobactam with ZnO-NPs-C showed the least cell viability as compared to the drug alone. The study showed a significant decrease in cell viability with the combined application of Piperacillin-Tazobactam and ZnO-Nps in comparison to the individual treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antimony (Sb) toxicity is a significant threat to crop production and humans. Its concentration is increasing in soil and water due to human activities which needs dire attention to address this challenge. Biochar is a promising amendment to remediate polluted soils, however, its role in mitigating the toxic impacts of Sb on plants is still unclear. Seaweed-based fertilizer (SBF) has shown appreciable results in improving plant performance, however, its role against metal/metalloids toxicity has not been studied yet. Therefore, this study tested the impacts of BC and SBF in mitigating the harmful effects of Sb on rice. The study was carried out with the following treatments; control, Sb stress (600 mg kg -1 ), Sb stress + biochar (2%), Sb stress + seaweed-based fertilizer (SBF: 2%), and Sb stress + BC (1%) and SBF (1%). The results showed that Sb toxicity adversely affected rice growth and productivity by impeding photosynthetic pigments, leaf relative water contents, increasing production of oxidative stress biomarkers (electrolyte leakage: EL, hydrogen peroxide: H 2 O 2 , malondialdehyde: MDA), and accumulation of Sb in plant parts. Contrarily, BC and SBF blends mitigated Sb-induced growth and yield damages in rice by improving photosynthetic efficiency, osmolyte synthesis, nutrient uptake, soil enzymatic activity, and antioxidant activities. Moreover, BC and SBF blend also reduced the bio-accessible Sb concentration (95.63%), bio-accessibility of Sb (25.40%), Sb transport coefficient (35.70%) and soil Sb antimony concentration (52.74%). This study investigated the impact of chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) treatment on the storage quality of Toona sinensis after harvesting. Toona sinensis samples treated with different concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 mg/L) of chlorine dioxide and stored at (4 ± 1) °C, with sampling test every 2 nd day. The changes in sensory, nutritional, and chlorine dioxide residues of T. sinensis were checked regularly. Results revealed that moderate (0.4~0.8 mg/L) chlorine dioxide concentrations maintained sensory quality, inhibited T. sinensis weight loss, slowed flavonoid and vitamin C content depletion, reduced nitrite content, and enhanced superoxide dismutase activity. The chlorine dioxide resides in T. sinensis were below the national standards (<2.0 mg/kg; GB 5009.244-2016). Overall, 0.4~0.8 mg/L chlorine dioxide treatment showed optimal effects on T. sinensis , providing a scientific basis for extended storage and preservation of T. sinensis ., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests. The substantial rise in metabolic illnesses that has occurred in both developed and developing countries over the last three decades has been linked to an increase in sugar-added foods and sweetened beverage intake. The significance of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases related to modern nutrition is an emerging issue. Spices and herbs can potentially be potent AGE production inhibitors due to their high polyphenol content. The inhibitory activity of an aqueous extract of Nigella sativa seeds (NS) on glucose- and fructose-mediated glycation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated. The glycation of proteins and its prevention using NS were assessed using spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometrics, and electrophoretic techniques. Additionally, the NBT assay, DNPH assay, Ellman assay, and thioflavin T assay were used to observe the biochemical alterations caused by glycated BSA. Molecular docking was employed to dock the BSA active site residues with inhibitors. Our data showed that NS protects against glucose- and fructose-mediated glycation and aggregation in vitro by inhibiting the formation of fructosamine, protein carbonyl content, free sulfhydryl groups, and fluorescent AGEs. Furthermore, NS also inhibited the production of β-cross-amyloid aggregates in proteins. It was interesting to note that the inhibition was found to be significantly higher in the Glu-BSA system, although the glycation product formed in the Fru-BSA system was higher compared to the Glu-induced protein system. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy and is ranked as the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Schinus molle ( S. mole ) L. is an important medicinal plant that contains many bioactive compounds with pharmacological properties. The role of S. molle leaf extract in the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was determined. The biosynthesized AgNPs were thoroughly characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. Furthermore, the cytotoxic effect of the biosynthesized AgNPs using S. molle (SMAgNPs) against HepG2 liver cancer cells was investigated. Reactive oxygen species generation, apoptosis induction, DNA damage, and autophagy activity were analyzed. The results clearly showed that the biosynthesized silver nanoparticles inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 by significantly ( p < 0.05) inducing oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, DNA damage, apoptosis, and autophagy in a dose- and time-dependent manner. These findings may encourage integrating the potential of natural products and the efficiency of silver nanoparticles for the fabrication of safe, environmentally friendly, and effective anticancer agents.

Comparison of the Dendrosicyos socotranus and Corallocarpus boehmii (tribe Coniandreae, family Cucurbitaceae) plastome data was of interest. Data on RNA, tRNA, GC%, plastome size, CDS and pseudogene were tabulated for the two species. The total length of 1,57,380 bp and 1,58,744 bp which includes LSC, SSC, IRa, and IRb, while their GC content was 37.1% and 37% respectively. The variation in the length of genes e.g. ndhD, ndhI, rpl22, rpoC2, rps16, rps19, rps8, ycf1and ycf2 noted. It is of interest to refine the taxonomic status of C. melo ssp. agrestis using its plastome data. The chloroplast size and GC% was found to be 1,56,016 bp and 36.92% respectively in Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis. The plastome of C. melo subsp. agrestis comprises of two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 25,797 bp each. It consisted of 133 genes with 88 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes and 37 tRNA genes.
