To provide the anatomical basis of blood supply of brachial plexus for the clinical microsurgical treatment of brachial plexus injury. Thirteen adult anticorrosive cadaveric specimens (8 males, 5 females) were dissected in this study. 3 fresh cases (2 males, 1 female) were used to observe the zonal pattern of arteries supplying brachial plexus, and 10 cases (6 males, 4 females) were used to observe the source and distribution of the brachial plexus arteries under microscope. The brachial plexus is supplied by branches of the subclavian–axillary axis (SAA), and these branches anastomose each other. According to distribution feature, blood supply of the brachial plexus could be divided into three zones. The first zone was from the nerve roots of intervertebral foramina to its proximal trunks, which was supplied by the vertebral artery and the deep cervical artery. The second zone was from the distal nerve trunks of the brachial plexus, encompassing the divisions to its proximal cords, which was supplied by direct branches of the subclavian artery or by branches originating from the dorsal scapular artery. The third zone was from the distal portion of the cords to terminal branches of the brachial plexus, which was supplied by direct branches of the axillary artery. The zonal pattern of arterial supply to the brachial plexus is a systematic and comprehensive modality to improve anatomical basis for the clinical microsurgical treatment for brachial plexus injury.

To observe the clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) on Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A total of 50 AD patients were randomly allocated into a Western medication (WM) group (n=25) and an acupuncture plus medication (APM) group (n=25). Patients in the WM group took oral huperzine A capsules. In addition to huperzine A capsules, patients in the APM group also received EA at Shenting (GV 24), Baihui (GV 20), Dazhui (GV 14), Fengfu (GV 16), Mingmen (GV 4) and Yongquan (KI 1). The needles on the above points were connected to G6805-II electric stimulator [3 pairs: Shenting (GV 24) and Baihui (GV 20); Dazhui (GV 14) and Fengfu (GV 16); and bilateral Yongquan (KI 1)]. The needles were retained 25 min. The treatment was done once a day, and 10 times made up a course of treatment. The patients received a total of 3 treatment courses. There was a 3-day interval between two courses. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Hasegawa dementia scale revised (HDS-R) were conducted before and after treatment. The clinical efficacies were evaluated when the treatment was completed. Before treatment, there were no between-group statistical differences in MMSE and HDS-R scores (both P>0.05). miR-126 may increase angiogenesis in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) treated with maggot debridement therapy (MDT).Real-time quantitative PCR was used to detect expression of miR-126 mRNA in the peripheral blood among the non-diabetic population, type 2 diabetes mellitus patients without DFU, and patients with DFUs of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The expression of miR-126 mRNA in the peripheral blood of patients with DFUs was observed before and after MDT. Finally, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were utilized to explore miR-126 mRNA expression with maggot excretions/secretions (ES).In the patients with DFUs, the miR-126 mRNA expression level in the peripheral blood was less than that type 2 diabetes mellitus patients without DFU, and much lower than that in the non-diabetic population (P0.001). The miR-126 expression level was significantly increased in those DFU patients treated with MDT (P0.05). Finally, using HUVEC co-cultured with ES, we showed the ES increased miR-126 expression in vitro (P0.001).MDT upregulates the miR-126 expression in the peripheral blood of patients with DFUs.

Aims The impaired angiogenesis is one of the main factors affecting the healing of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) wounds. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) promotes granulation tissue growth and angiogenesis during DFU wound healing. Non-coding microRNAs can also promote local angiogenesis in DFU wounds by regulating wound repairing related gene expression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of microRNAs in MDT promoting DFU wound angiogenesis. Methods In this study, we applied MDT to treat DFU wound tissue and detect the expression of the miR-17–92 cluster. In vitro experiments, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with maggot excretions/secretions (ES), the miR-17–92 cluster and the predicted target gene expression were measured. Tube formation assay and cell scratch assay were performed when inhibition of miR-18a/19a or overexpression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) were used in this study. Results miR-18a/19a transcription significantly up-regulated and TSP-1 expression down-regulated in patients wound tissue and in HUVECs. Inhibition of miR-18a/19a or overexpression of TSP-1 partially blocked the migration and tube formation ability stimulated by ES. Conclusion Targeted activation of miR-18a/19a transcription levels and subsequent regulation of TSP-1 expression may be a novel therapeutic strategy for DFU.

Ischemic stroke is a devastating central nervous disease associated with oxidative stress and NOX2 is the main source of ROS responsible for brain tissue. miRNAs are a class of negative regulator of genes in mammals and involves the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. This study aims to observe the role of target miRNA(miR-652) of NOX2 in ischemic stroke. A rat cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (CI/R) injury model and an SH-SY5Y cell hypoxia/reoxygenation(H/R) model were used to simulate ischemic stroke, and corresponding gene expression, biochemical indicators and pathophysiological indicators were measured to observe the role of miR-652. NOX2 significantly increased in brain tissues subjected to I/R or in SH-SY5Y cells subjected to H/R, while the expression level of miR-652(potential target of NOX2) significantly decreased in both brain tissues and plasma. Overexpression of miR-652 significantly suppressed NOX2 expression and ROS generation in H/R treated SH-SY5Y cells and reduced the relative luciferase activity of cells transfected with plasmid NOX2-WT (reporter gene plasmid). MiR-652 agomir significantly decreased the expression of NOX2 and ROS generation in brain tissues of CIR rats, as well as tissue injury. These data indicated that miR-652 protected rats from cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury by directly targeting NOX2, is a novel target for ischemic stroke therapy.

Background To investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of hypertension (HTN) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in newly diagnosed diabetes with ketosis-onset. Methods A cross-sectional study was adopted in 734 newly diagnosed diabetics including 83 type 1 diabetics with positive islet-associated autoantibodies, 279 ketosis-onset diabetics without islet-associated autoantibodies and 372 non-ketotic type 2 diabetics. The clinical characteristics of HTN and MetS were compared across the three groups, and the risk factors of them were appraised in each group. Results The prevalence of HTN and MetS were substantially higher in the ketosis-onset diabetics (34.4% for HTN and 58.8% for MetS) than in the type 1 diabetics (15.7% for HTN, P = 0.004; 25.3% for MetS, P

We present a scheme to construct a controlled phase-flip (CPF) gate deterministically with the dipole induced transparency (DIT) of a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center embedded in a photonic crystal cavity coupled to two waveguides. Further more, a SWAP gate between a photon and an NV center in cavity is presented with the same quantum system by using the CPF gate. We then show a quantum teleportation scheme between two remote NV centers. The fidelities and efficiencies of the gates can reach relatively high values even if cavity decay and leakage are considered.

To determine the role of maggot debridement therapy (MDT) on diabetic foot wound healing, we compared growth related factors in wounds before and after treatment. Furthermore, we utilized human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to explore responses to maggot excretions/secretions on markers of angiogenesis and proliferation. The results showed that there was neo-granulation and angiogenesis in diabetic foot wounds after MDT. Moreover, significant elevation in CD34 and CD68 levels was also observed in treated wounds. In vitro, ES increased HUVEC proliferation, improved tube formation, and increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 in a dose dependent manner. These results demonstrate that MDT and maggot ES can promote diabetic foot wound healing by up-regulating endothelial cell activity.

Aims Activation of hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF) is a hallmark in hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension (HPH). microRNAs play a significant role in regulating proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) in pulmonary hypertension. Previous studies have shown that HIF-1β is a target of miR-103/107. In this present study, we aimed to investigate whether miR-103/107 regulate vascular remodeling in HPH via HIF-1β. Main methods The HPH model was built by hypoxia exposure in rats. Real-time PCR and Western blotting were used to determine the expression of miR-103/107 and HIF-1β. Proliferation of PASMCs was examined by 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation method. The functions of miR-103/107 on PASMCs proliferation, HIF-1α and HIF-1β expression were assessed by transfecting miR-103/107 mimics and inhibitors. Key findings Significant down-regulation of miR-103/107 was observed in remodeled intrapulmonary vascular in HPH rats and hypoxia-exposured PASMCs, whereas HIF-1α and HIF-1β expression were up-regulated. Hypoxia exposure induced significant proliferation of PASMCs, overexpression of miR-103/107 inhibited but miR-103/107 inhibitors exacerbated PASMCs proliferation. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments showed that miR-103/107 expression was inversely correlated with HIF-1β level. No significant changes of HIF-1α expression were observed under miR-103/107 mimic treatment. Significance Loss of suppression on HIF-1β by miR-103/107 may contribute to excess proliferation of PASMCs and vascular remodeling in hypoxic pulmonary hypertension.

Aim Eukaryotic translation initiation factors 3a (eIF3a) is involved in regulating cell cycle, cell division, growth and differentiation. Previous studies suggest a role of eIF3a on fibrosis disease and cellular proliferation and differentiation of fibroblasts. The present study aims to investigate the role of eIF3a on hypoxia-induced right ventricular (RV) remodeling and underlying mechanism. Main methods RV remodeling was induced by hypoxia (10% O 2 , 3 weeks) in rats. Primary cardiac fibroblasts were cultured in vitro and their proliferation was investigated by MTS and EdU incorporation method. eIF3a knockdown was conducted by eIF3a siRNA. The expression/level of TGF-β1, eIF3a, p27 and α-SMA, collagen-I, collagen-III, ANP and BNP were analyzed by ELISA, real-time PCR or Western blot. Key findings The expression of eIF3a was obviously increased in right ventricle of RV remodeling rats accompanied by up-regulation of α-SMA and collagens. In cultured cardiac fibroblasts, application of exogenous TGF-β1-induced cellular proliferation and differentiation concomitantly with up-regulation of eIF3a expression and down-regulation of p27 expression. The effects of TGF-β1-induced proliferation and up-regulation of α-SMA and collagen in cardiac fibroblasts were abolished by eIF3a siRNA. eIF3a siRNA reversed TGF-β1 induced down-regulation of p27 expression. Significance The eIF3a plays a crucial role in hypoxia-induced RV remodeling by regulating TGF-β1-induced proliferation and differentiation of cardiac fibroblasts, which is mediated via eIF3a/p27 pathway.

Vascular calcification (VC) is an inducement of many cardiovascular diseases. Clinic evidences have confirmed that diabetes was the independent risk factor for VC, and the mechanism has not been well explored. Apelin as a ligand molecule is widely found in the cardiovascular system and showed potential in inhibiting VC, but the inhibitory effect and mechanism of apelin-13 against high glucose-induced VC have not been investigated yet. Herein, apelin-13 was employed to inhibit high glucose-induced VC in mouse aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (MOVAS), and the underlying mechanism was explored. The results showed that apelin-13 significantly inhibited high glucose-induced cells proliferation, migration and invasion of MOVAS cells. Apelin-13 also effectively attenuated high glucose-induced calcification by inhibiting alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and expression. Further investigation revealed that apelin-13 dramatically suppressed high glucose-induced DNA damage through inhibiting reactive oxide species (ROS) generation. Moreover, apelin-13 also effectively improved high glucose-induced dysfunction of MAPKs and PI3K/AKT. Inhibition of ERK by inhibitor (U0126) significantly blocked high glucose-induced calcification, which further confirmed the significance of MAPKs. Taken together, these results suggested that apelin-13 had the potential to attenuate high glucose-induced calcification of MOVAS cells by inhibiting ROS-mediated DNA damage and regulating MAPKs and PI3K/AKT pathways. Our findings validated the strategy of using apelin-13 maybe a novel way in treating high glucose-mediated VC.

To evaluate S1AI-S4AI screw channels with three-dimensional digital technology simulation analysis and to study the feasibility and applicable features of sacral alar-iliac screw fixation in adults.Forty (20 men and 20 women) normal adult's pelvic CT scan data sets were selected to reconstruct the three-dimensional pelvic model. The ideal S1AI-S4AI screw channels were simulated, followed by precise measurement of their parameters.The results showed that there were no significant differences in the transverse angles, sagittal angles, radiuses of the maximal inscribed circles, or lengths of the screw channels in S1AI-S2AI screws between genders (P 0.05). In contrast, the radiuses of the maximal inscribed circles on the left and right, respectively, were 5.93 ± 1.02 mm and 5.92 ± 1.04 mm in males and 4.64 ± 0.98 mm and 4.59 ± 0.95 mm in females, and there was a significant difference in S3AI screws between genders (P 0.05). With a radius of 2.50 mm considered to be standard, there were 25 cases (62.5%) with an S4AI screw channel radius ≤ 2.50 mm in 40 adults, and 15 cases (37.5%; 9 males and 6 females) with a radius 2.50 mm. Furthermore, the transverse angles, the sagittal angles, the lengths of the screw channels, and the radiuses of the maximal inscribed circles were significantly different between genders in 15 cases (P 0.05).Only one maximum ideal screw can be placed on one side at a time. With a radius of 2.50 mm considered to be standard, it is feasible to place S1AI-S3AI screws with a radius 2.50 mm in the entire adult population and S4AI screws with a radius 2.50 mm in some of the adult population. Furthermore, preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction and three-matic research software can effectively simulate the sacral alar-iliac screw channels, and they can provide accurate data for clinical applications.

Previous meta-analyses have examined the prevalence of sexual dysfunction among women with cancer, but there is no breast cancer (BC)-specific study. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to examine the prevalence and severity of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in women with BC. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP for relevant studies published between April 2000 and January 2017. Data were extracted from studies which assessed FSD prevalence and sexual function in women with BC using the female sexual function index (FSFI). Meta-analyses were performed by pooling the prevalence rates of FSD and total FSFI scores. Meta regression was performed to explore the sources of heterogeneity. We selected 19 published studies involving a total of 2684 women with BC. In this study population, overall FSD prevalence was 73.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) 64.0%, 82.8%), and the total FSFI score was 19.28 (95% CI 17.39, 21.16). Aims: To investigate whether hyperuricemia and decreased urine uric acid excretion (UUAE) are associated with increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and whether the coexistence of hyperuricemia and low UUAE further increases the CKD risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Based on serum uric acid (SUA) and UUAE levels, 2 846 T2DM inpatients were divided into patients with SUA and UUAE (group 1), normal SUA and low UUAE (group 2), hyperuricemia and normal UUAE (group 3), and hyperuricemia and low UUAE (group 4). Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA levels ≥ 420 μmol/L in men and ≥ 360 μmol/L in women. Low UUAE was defined as UUAE levels < the first UUAE quintiles (< 2161 μmol/24h in men and 1977 μmol/24h in women). Results: There was significantly increased trend of the prevalence of CKD (4.3%, 12.6%, 18.3% and 47.8%, p< 0.001), albuminuria (20.2%, 26.4%, 36.9% and 54.9%, p< 0.001), and macroalbuminuria (3.3%, 10.1%, 10.7% and 31.9%, p< 0.001) from group 1 to 4. Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) is involved in the proliferation and survival of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) in human pulmonary hypertension (PH) and animal PH models, and miRNAs are reported to play a key role in modulation of the proliferation of PASMCs. The purposes of this study are to determine the functions of miR-100 and mTOR in cardiovascular remodeling of the hypoxic PH rats and to clarify the correlation between them. We established a rat model of hypoxic PH, which showed an increase in right ventricle systolic pressure, right ventricular and pulmonary vascular remodeling, accompanied by an up-regulation of mTOR and a down-regulation of miR-100. Next, we established an in vitro model of hypoxia-induced proliferation of PASMCs. Consistent with the in vivo findings, hypoxia induced proliferation of PASMCs, accompanied by a down-regulation of miR-100 and an up-regulation of mTOR; these phenomena were reversed by miR-100 mimics or the antagonist of mTOR. Finally, the dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was utilized to reveal the direct interaction between miR-100 and the 3 '-UTR region of mTOR gene. Based on these observations, we conclude that miR-100 can modulate the proliferation of PASMCs in hypoxic PH rats through suppressing the mTOR expression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of 224 children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, and according to the presence or absence of DKA, these children were divided into DKA group and non-DKA group, with 112 children in each group. The DKA group was further divided into ≥ 5-year group (65 children) and < 5-year group (47 children), and according to the blood gas parameters, this group was divided into mild group (26 children), moderate group (29 children), and severe group (57 children). The factors influencing the development of DKA were analyzed, as well as the clinical and laboratory features of DKA children with different ages. RESULTS: The most common symptoms in these 224 children with type 1 diabetes were polydipsia (86.2%), polyuria (78.6%), and weight loss (57.1%). Compared with the non-DKA group, the DKA group had a significantly higher percentage of children who were aged < 5 years, who had low family income, or whose parents had an educational level of senior high school or below. The DKA group had significantly higher levels of random blood glucose and HbA1C and significantly lower levels of pH, HCO(3)(-), and C-peptide than the non-DKA group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the percentage of children with severe DKA between the ≥ 5-year group and the < 5-year group (P > 0.05). Compared with the < 5-year group, the ≥ 5-year group sufferred from symptoms for a significantly prolonged period, and had a significantly lower level of random blood glucose and significantly higher levels of HbA1C and C-peptide (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: DKA has a high incidence rate in children with type 1 diabetes, and the development of DKA is associated with age, parents' educational level, and family income.

Homocysteine (Hcy) causes cognitive deficits and hippocampal endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Our previous study has confirmed that Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) attenuates Hcy-induced cognitive dysfunction and hippocampal ER stress. Silent information regulator 1 (Sirt-1) is indispensable in the formation of learning and memory. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the role of Sirt-1 in the protective effect of H2S against Hcy-induced cognitive dysfunction. We found that NaHS (a donor of H2S) markedly up-regulated the expression of Sirt-1 in the hippocampus of Hcy-exposed rats. Sirtinol, a specific inhibitor of Sirt-1, reversed the improving role of NaHS in the cognitive function of Hcy-exposed rats, as evidenced by that sirtinol increased the escape latency and the swim distance in the acquisition trial of morris water maze (MWM) test, decreased the times crossed through and the time spent in the target quadrant in the probe trail of MWM test, and reduced the discrimination index in the novel object recognition test (NORT) in the rats cotreated with NaHS and Hcy. We also found that sirtinol reversed the protection of NaHS against Hcy-induced hippocampal ER-stress, as evidenced by up-regulating the expressions of GRP78, CHOP, and cleaved caspase-12 in the hippocampus of rats cotreated with NaHS and Hcy. These results suggested the contribution of upregulation of hippocampal Sirt-1 to the improving role of H2S in the cognitive function of Hcy-exposed rats, which involves suppression of hippocampal ER stress. Our finding provides a new insight into the mechanism underlying the inhibitory role of H2S in Hcy-induced cognitive dysfunction.

Deafness and hearing loss may have functional, economic, social and emotional impacts on humans, including the ability of an individual to communicate with others, feelings of isolation and frustration, and health sector costs. The World Health Organization reported that there are 32 million children worldwide with hearing loss. In order to investigate genetic mutations in children of 26 nationalities with hearing loss in Yunnan, Sanger sequencing was employed to screen for mutations in four of the most common pathological genes, including gap junction protein β2 and 3, solute carrier family 26 member 4 and mitochondrial DNA. Whole exome sequencing was used to detect the mutation in the proband of a family in which these four genes were normal. Subsequently, the mutation was identified by Sanger sequencing. The present study reports a novel mutation, c.718C>G; p. (Arg240Gly) in the melanogenesis associated transcription factor gene, in Han people with hearing loss. The results of the present study may provide parents and children an accurate diagnosis, which may allow physicians to how to rehabilitate children's hearing.

The traditional Chinese herb Wu-Chu-Yu has been used to treat hypertension for hundreds of years. A previous study indicated that rutaecarpine was the effective component of Wu‑Chu‑Yu, which lowered blood pressure by elevating the expression level of calcitonin gene‑related peptide (CGRP). The present study was performed to investigate the role of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) in CGRP expression and release induced by rutaecarpine. Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) obtained from Sprague‑Dawley rats were cultured to analyze the mRNA expression and release of CGRP. Calcium influx, as an indicator of TRPV1 activation, was measured in 293 cells with stable overexpression of TRPV1. The results demonstrated that the amount of CGRP in the cell culture supernatant and the mRNA expression of CGRPα and CGRPβ in DRG was upregulated by rutaecarpine in a concentration‑dependent manner, and was inhibited by the TRPV1 receptor antagonist capsazepine. In addition, intracellular Ca2+ levels were increased by Rut in the aforementioned 293 cell line, indicating the activation of TRPV1 by Rut. Therefore, it was concluded that TRPV1 was involved in the expression and release of CGRP stimulated by rutaecarpine, which provided novel mechanistic understanding of the treatment of hypertension using the Chinese herb Wu-Chu-Yu.

Nifurtimox has been an important treatment for trypanosomiasis for many years, but new research indicates that the drug may also be an effective therapy for malignant neuroblastoma. However, there have been few published reports evaluating the toxicity of nifurtimox in different species. Therefore, to further understand its toxicity and toxicokinetic profiles, Sprague Dawley rats and beagle dogs were orally administered nifurtimox at 0, 25, 75 and 150 mg kg−1 day−1, and 0, 30, 60 and 120 mg kg−1 day−1, respectively, for 28 days, which was followed by a 28-day recovery period. Significant decreases in the body weight and food consumption were observed in rats given 75 and 150 mg kg−1 day−1, but no significant difference was observed in either body weight or food consumption in dogs. No notable gender difference was observed in the rats in our study. The mean Cmax and AUC0–t increased with the exposure time in rats, and systemic exposure on day 28 was notably higher than that on day 1 for each dosing group. In contrast, in dogs the mean Cmax and AUC0–t increased significantly in the 120 mg kg−1 day−1 group only. Other findings in rats included a dose-dependent increase in total bilirubin and urea, a significant increase in the kidney organ coefficient, a decrease in heart and thymus weights, and a decrease in the weight of testes and epididymides tissue in males administered 75 and 150 mg kg−1 day−1, with dead sperms observed in the epididymides and a loss of necrotic cells. Furthermore, the brains of rats administered 150 mg kg−1 day−1 nifurtimox revealed cerebral tissue softening. In dogs there were no treatment-related changes in organ weights during the dosing period. However, deciduous spermatoblasts were observed in the seminiferous tubules and there was a lack of long sperms in the epididymides. The findings from this study demonstrate inter-species differences in nifurtimox toxicity and toxicokinetics. These results are relevant to the evaluation of the wider clinical applications of this drug.

Potassium 2-(1-hydroxypentyl)-benzoate (dl-PHPB) is a prodrug of 3-n-butylphthalide (dl-NBP) for treatment of cerebral ischemic stroke in China, which undergoes lactonization to form dl-NBP in plasma. And, the phase II-III clinical trial of dl-PHPB has been approved by China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) in 2013. In this study, a toxicity and toxicokinetics evaluation of dl-PHPB was performed using beagle dogs at specially high-dose 108 mg/kg/day (65-fold higher than humans at MHRD) for 4 weeks by intravenous administration, with a 3-week recovery period. And the plasma concentrations of dl-PHPB along with its metabolite dl-NBP were determined by HPLC-UV method. The results showed that dl-PHPB was quickly metabolized into dl-NBP, and no significant accumulation was observed. A slight to moderate behavior-associated toxicity was revealed in the process of delivery; and recovered to normal at the end of administration. Changes in the blood hematological profiles included significantly increased NEUT levels and lower LYM% content. Meanwhile, a notable increase in TG content was also observed in the serum biochemical parameters at 4-week post-exposure. These findings were reversible during the recovery period. The information from these studies would be taken into consideration for the interpretation of toxicology findings and provide a reference for clinical safety assessment.

Background/Aims: The enhanced proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) is a central pathological component in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Both the Warburg effect and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) are involved in the proliferation of PASMCs. However, the mechanism underlying the crosstalk between the Warburg effect and PDGF during PASMC proliferation is still unknown. We hypothesized that PDGF promotes the Warburg effect via activating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-α (HIF-1α) in proliferative PASMCs. Methods: PASMCs were derived from pulmonary arteries of SD rats; cell viability, the presence of metabolites, and metabolic enzyme activities assay were determined by MTT assays, kit assays and western blot analysis, respectively. Results: PDGF promoted PASMC proliferation in a dose- and time-dependent manner, accompanied by an enhanced Warburg effect. Treatment with PDGFR antagonists, Warburg effect inhibitor and PDK1 inhibitor significantly inhibited PI3K signaling activation, HIF-1α expression and PASMC proliferation induced by PDGF, respectively. Furthermore, treatment with PI3K signaling pathway inhibitors remarkably suppressed PDGF-induced PASMC proliferation and the Warburg effect. Conclusion: microplate reader (Biotek, Winooski The Warburg effect plays a critical role in PDGF-induced PASMC proliferation and is mediated by activation of the PI3K signaling pathway and HIF-1α.

In view of the fixed testing point and complex wiring in conventional piggery environment control, a new system based on wireless sensor network was designed. This system consisted of the control center with ARM-Linux, executing mechanism nodes and wireless sensor network containing the flexible sensor nodes which could be arbitrarily placed in piggery. In order to make reasonable use of the energy of Zigbee network and prolong the survival time, a improved zigbee tree routing algorithm was proposed. First of all, by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the Cluster-tree and AODVjr algorithm in the Zigbee protocol, the neighbor table was introduced into the improved algorithm. Secondly, the scope of the destination node was confirmed to control the radio range of the RREQ and prevented invalid RREQ flooding. Simulation results show that the improved algorithm optimized the overall energy consumption effectively, prolonged the time of the critical nodes, reduced the number of death nodes, balanced the network load and improved the overall performance of the network.

Objective To observe the differences in efficacy on treatment of fractures of the middle and lower 1/3 of the tibiofibula between cribriform splints plus electroacupuncture, warming needle and moxibustion only, and external fixation with traditional splints plus the administration of an herbal formula. Clinical efficacy and the effects on serum bone morphogenic protein −7 (BMP-7) and endothelin −1 (ET-1) were both measured. Method 600 patients with fractures of the middle and lower 1/3 of the tibiofibula were randomly divided into three groups according to andome number table: splint with electroacupuncture (group A), warm needling moxibustion group (group B) and splint with traditional Chinese medicine herb (Group C). Cribriform splints with electroacupuncture were used in group A, warming needling therapy were adopted in group B, and traditional splints with external fixation were used along with oral administration of musk bone capsules ( ) in group C. Clinical results for the three groups were compared, and ELISA method was used to detect the serum BMP-7 and ET-1 of patients in the three groups before and after treatment. Results Group A was better than group B and group C in terms of clinical healing days and delayed healing status (P Conclusion Electroacupuncture treatment with cribriform splints for fractures of the middle and lower 1/3 of the tibiofibula resulted in significantly shorter clinical healing time, and lower incidence of delayed healing compared to warm needling or splints with a traditional Chinese herbal formula. Its mechanism may be associated with greater regulation of serum BMP-7 and ET-1 through electroacupuncture.

Runoff and soil loss affect both farmland productivity and environmental quality. This study tested the interaction effects among polyacrylamide (PAM) application rate, PAM molecular weight, and slope gradient on runoff and soil loss under simulated sprinkler irrigation in laboratory. Experimental treatments consisted of four PAM application rates of 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g m-2, two PAM molecular weights of 12 and 18 Mg mol-1, and three slope gradients of 5o, 15o, and 25o. Results indicated that compared with the control treatment, PAM application generally decreased total runoff volume but increased soil loss. Total runoff volume and soil loss increased with the increased PAM application rate. Under control treatment, total runoff volume increased with the increased slope gradient. However, total runoff volume was similar for different slope gradients when PAM application rates were 0.5 and 1.0 g m-2, but it decreased with the increased slope gradient when PAM application rate was 2.0 g m-2. Total soil loss increased with the increase of slope gradient under experimental conditions. Polyacrylamide molecular weight did not affect total runoff volume but did soil loss significantly atP< 0.001, and a high PAM molecular weight resulted in less soil loss than a low one did. Statistical analysis demonstrated that there existed a significant interaction effect atP< 0.001 between PAM application rate and soil slope gradient on runoff volume and soil loss. The interaction effects between PAM molecular weight and slope gradient or among PAM application rate, PAM molecular weight, and slope gradient on soil loss were also significant atP< 0.01. A PAM application rate less than 2 g m-2is suggested to control water and soil loss on sloped lands under sprinkler irrigation.

Atmospheric particle is one of the risk factors for respiratory disease; however, their injury mechanisms are poorly understood, and prevention methods are highly desirable. We constructed artificial PM2.5 (aPM2.5) particles according to the size and composition of actual PM2.5 collected in Beijing. Using these artificial particles, we created an inhalation-injury animal model. These aPM2.5 particles simulate the physical and chemical characteristics of the actual PM2.5, and inhalation of the aPM2.5 in rat results in a time-dependent change in lung suggesting a declined lung function, injury from oxidative stress and inflammation in lung. Thus, this aPM2.5-caused injury animal model may mimic that of the pulmonary injury in human exposed to airborne particles. In addition, polydatin (PD), a resveratrol glucoside that is rich in grapes and red wine, was found to significantly decrease the oxidative potential (OP) of aPM2.5 in vitro. Treating the model rats with PD prevented the lung function decline caused by aPM2.5, and reduced the level of oxidative damage in aPM2.5-exposed rats. Moreover, PD inhibited aPM2.5-induced inflammation response, as evidenced by downregulation of white blood cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), inflammation-related lipids and proinflammation cytokines in lung. These results provide a practical means for self-protection against particulate air pollution.

To provide the anatomical basis of brachial plexus roots for the diagnosis and treatment of brachial plexus root avulsion injury. The morphological features of brachial plexus roots were observed and measured on 15 cervicothoracic spine of adult cadavers. The relationship of brachial plexus nerve roots and the surrounding tissues also were observed, as well as the blood supply of anterior and posterior roots of the brachial plexus. Origination of the nerve roots in the dorsal–ventral direction from the midline was fine-tuned at each level along the spinal cord. The minimum distance of the origin of the nerve root to midline was 2.2 mm at C 5, while the maximum was 3.1 mm at T 1. Inversely, the distance between the origin of the posterior root and the midline of the spinal cord gradually decreased, the maximum being 4.2 mm at C 5 and minimum 2.7 mm at T 1. Meanwhile, there was complicated fibrous connection among posterior roots of the brachial plexus. The C 5–6 nerve roots interlaced with tendons of the scalenus anterior and scalenus medius and fused with the transverse-radicular ligaments in the intervertebral foramina. However, these ligaments were not seen in C 7–8, and T 1. The blood supply of the anterior and posterior roots of the brachial plexus was from the segmental branches of the vertebral artery, deep cervical artery and ascending cervical artery, with a mean outer diameter of 0.61 mm. The systematic and comprehensive anatomic data of the brachial plexus roots provides the anatomical basis to diagnose and treat the brachial plexus root avulsion injury.

Percutaneous cervical pedicle screw fixation has been proven to be an effective method of cervical screw instrumentation, which has the advantages of less invasiveness and low blood loss. Emerging evidence has indicated that the cervical spinous process plays an important role in percutaneous spine surgery. However, there is a limited amount of information on the fundamental research of pedicle and its associated imaging parameter measurement. The purpose of this study was to measure the anatomic data of the pedicle screw channel (PSC) using reverse engineering and three-dimensional reconstruction, and also to discuss the three-dimensional relationship between the cervical spinous process and the pedicle screw channel.Twenty adult subjects (10 males, 10 females, age range 19-46 years) were studied using the method of three-dimensional CT reconstruction and reverse engineering. The centrum was divided into 10 equal parts from front to back. The bisectors were defined as borderline depths of the centrum, from front to back, 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, 10%, 0% of borderline depths were presented. Then, a 3D coordinate system was constructed to measure all the data, including the radius of the inscribed circle, the length of the PSC, the insertion angle, the distances from entry point to cervical spinous process and skin depth. All the indexes were measured from 70% to 90% borderline depth.The radius of the inscribed circles from CThe measurements of this study could provide detailed information for percutaneous cervical screw fixation. The data of the relationship between the cervical spinous process and the pedicle screw channel present valuable technical information for the design, optimization and clinical application of the aiming device for percutaneous cervical pedicle screw fixation. Elevated serum uric acid is closely associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the association of urine uric acid excretion (UUAE) with NAFLD has not been investigated. Our aims were to explore the associations between UUAE and NAFLD and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).This cross-sectional study included 2042 Chinese inpatients with T2DM. UUAE was determined enzymatically using a single 24-h urine collection. The subjects were stratified into quartile based on UUAE levels. NAFLD was determined by ultrasonography. Elevated ALT level was defined with an ALT value65U/L.There was an obvious increase in both NAFLD prevalence (26.3%, 34.6%, 43.8%, and 56.2%, respectively, p0.001 for trend) and ALT value [16 (12-24), 17 (13-27), 20 (14-30), and 24 (15-38) U/L, respectively, p0.001 for trend] across the UUAE quartiles after controlling for confounders. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed independent associations between UUAE and NAFLD (p=0.002) and elevated ALT level (p0.001). Compared with the patients in the first quartile of UUAE, those in the second, third and fourth quartiles had 1.528-, 1.869-, and 1.906-fold risk of NAFLD, and 3.620-, 6.223-, and 10.506-fold risk of elevated ALT level in T2DM, respectively.Increased UUAE levels were significantly associated with the presence of NAFLD and increase of ALT in T2DM. UUAE may be a clinically significant measure in assessing the risk of NAFLD in T2DM.

In order to solve the syntax problem of service retrieval based on keywords, we present an Ontology-based solution for service registration and retrieval in this paper. Firstly we analyze the semantics of home service from different facets, and extract relative concepts of service to construct three domain ontologies including function ontology, content ontology and device ontology. Then, a model based on these domain ontologies has been presented. Finally the process from registration to retrieval is given in detail.

Soil erosion affects soil productivity and environmental quality. A laboratory research experiment under simulated heavy rainfall with tap water was conducted to investigate the effects of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) application rates (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g m −2 ) and molecular weights (12 and 18 Mg mol −1 ) on runoff, soil erosion, and soil nutrient loss at a slope of 5°. The results showed the two lower rates of PAM application decreased runoff while the highest rate increased runoff as compared with the control. Sediment concentration and soil mass loss increased significantly with the increasing PAM application rate. Compared with the control, PAM application decreased K + , NH + 4 , and NO − 3 concentrations in sediment and K + and NH + 4 concentrations in runoff, but significantly increased the mass losses of K + , NH + 4 , and NO − 3 over soil surface except for the NH + 4 at PAM application rate lower than 1.0 g m −2 . PAM application decreased the proportion of K + loss with runoff to its total mass loss over soil surface from 60.1% to 16.4%. However, it did not affect the NH + 4 and NO − 3 losses with runoff, and more than 86% of them were lost with runoff. A higher PAM molecular weight resulted in less soil erosion and K + mass loss but had little effect on runoff and NH + 4 and NO − 3 losses. PAM application did not prevent soil erosion and the mass losses of K + and NO − 3 under experimental conditions.

Aim. To develop a psychosocial adaptation questionnaire for Chinese patients with visual impairments and to examine its reliability and validity. Background. Psychosocial adaptation with disease has been studied, however, there have been few reports on the impact of visual impairment on psychosocial adaptation. An instrument has not been developed to assess psychosocial adaptation with visual impairment specifically for patients in China. Methods. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. A questionnaire was developed based on the concept of psychosocial adaptation with visual impairment. Items for the questionnaire were developed by reviewing the literature and carrying out a semi-structured interview with 12 visually impaired patients. Five ophthalmologists and ten patients evaluated the content validity and face validity of the questionnaire, respectively. The method of convenient sampling was used to select 213 visually impaired patients in the Ophthalmology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University to participate in the study. Discriminative index and item-total correlation analyses were used to delete items that were lower than a set criterion. Regarding construct validity, factor analysis was performed. The Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Self Acceptance Questionnaire (SAQ) were used to evaluate criterion validity. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used as an index of internal consistency. To evaluate test–retest reliability, 50 patients were re-evaluated after 24 hours. Results. A total of 204 questionnaire items were created. 22 items were deleted by discriminative index and item-total correlation before factor analysis; 38 items were entered into the model for factor analysis. Seven factors were extracted by using principal factor analysis and varimax rotation, with a cumulative contribution of 59·18%. The characteristics and microstructure of films as well as the chemical and physical changes taken place during so-gel and heat treatments were analyzed by XRD, SEM and Emission spectra. The Cyclic voltammetry which measurements the films by illumination with a high pressure mercury lamp are employed to analyze photoelectrochemical property the porous titania thin films. The effects of precursor concentration and PEG 2000 contention the characteristic of films were discussed. The Cyclic voltammetry experiment under UV light irradiation indicated that the pores in the TiO2 thin films enhanced its photoelectrochemical activity; the size of the pores thin films obviously affected the photo-current exchanged rate of titania films.

An attempt was made to prepare hollow silica microspheres by an oil-in-water emulsion which proposed to use waste polystyrene organic solution as oil phase. Effects of the kinds and amounts of surfactants and the concentration of waste polystyrene solution on the nanosized hollow silica microspheres were studied. The prepared hollow silica microspheres were characterized by TEM, XRD, TG-DTA and particle size distribution analyzer. The experimental results showed that the waste polystyrene organic solution was successfully treated as oil core and the cores could be removed at about 350°C. Meanwhile, the obtained hollow microspheres were amorphous with an average particle size of 40nm. The hollow silica microspheres could be obtained with the selected surfactant.

A uniform TiO2 nanoparticle coating was prepared both on steel and slide glass using sol–gel method and hydrothermal post-treatments. The particle size in the sol was determined to be ～2nm. The surface morphology and the structure of the coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction（XRD）, which revealed the surface was compact and well-distributed, and the main phase was anatase. UV-VIS spectrophotometer indicated that a absorption peak existed at 340nm. The anticorrosion performances of the coatings in dark and under ultraviolet illumination have been evaluated by electrochemical techniques.

The search for a reusable material as an efficient and economic catalyst for hydrocarbon oxidation is an important field of research. In this study, we investigated the highly effective combination of support and metalloporphyrin provided by manganese tetraphenylporphyrin adsorbed onto a precursor of freshly precipitated aluminium hydroxide, followed by conversion to a manganese porphyrin/boehmite compound. This was characterized using FT-IR, UV–vis spectroscopic techniques, N 2 BET analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron micrograph technique and thermal analysis. Aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane has been investigated using the compound as a catalyst under mild conditions and in the absence of any solvent and reductant. The results indicate that it has higher catalytic activity than manganese tetraphenylporphyrin and the corresponding chitosan-supported catalyst. In particular, the catalyst exhibits good atom economy for cyclohexane oxidation, high catalyst turnover number, and good ketone and alcohol selectivity. In particular, it has excellent reusability, with no change in original catalytic activity; a quantity of catalyst containing only 1 mg of Mn TPP can be reused 8 times under the promotion of beomite (BM). In addition, we examined the reaction conditions for the use of such nanoparticle-supported manganese tetraphenylporphyrin as a mild and environmental friendly oxidation catalyst.

Manganese tetraphenylporphyrin (Mn TPP) has been successfully supported on chitosan (CTS), chitin (CTN) and cellulose (CLS) by means of physical adsorption, and they are characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The supported catalysts exhibit enhanced activity and effective recycle (except for Mn TPP/CLS) for oxidation of cyclohexane in the presence of air as oxidant. Both Mn TPP/CTS and Mn TPP/CTN show higher selectivity for cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, whereas Mn TPP/CLS shows lower selectivity. The kind of support influences the catalytic activities and the selectivity for the supported catalysts. Appearance of the catalytic differences is attributed to the presence of the microenvironment differences for the supports.

The chitosan-supported μ-oxo dimeric iron tetraphenylporphyrin ((TPPFeIII)2O/CTS) was prepared and its ability to catalyze aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane into the corresponding ketone and alcohol in the absence of any co-reductants and solvents was investigated. Under the optimum reaction conditions of 398 K and 0.6 MPa, the heterogeneous catalytic system gave about 90% selectivity of ketone and alcohol at 13.0% yield and a catalyst turnover number of 1.03 × 105. The supported catalyst can be efficiently reused at least six times. The changes in various catalytic parameters with reaction temperature, pressure and the amount of catalyst were investigated. Compared with the corresponding unsupported catalyst, (TPPFeIII)2O/CTS was more robust towards destruction by oxygen and provided better catalysis for cyclohexane oxidation.

Enhanced proliferation of pulmonary arterial vascular smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) is a key pathological component of vascular remodeling in hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension (HPH). Mammalian targeting of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling has been shown to play a role in protein translation and participate in the progression of pulmonary hypertension. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor-2α (eIF2α) is a key factor in regulation of cell growth and cell cycle, but its role in mTOR signaling and PASMCs proliferation remains unknown. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) rat model was established by hypoxia. Rapamycin was used to treat rats as an mTOR inhibitor. Proliferation of primarily cultured rat PASMCs was induced by hypoxia, rapamycin and siRNA of mTOR and eIF2α were used in loss-of-function studies. The expression and activation of eIF2α, mTOR and c-myc were analyzed. Results showed that mTOR/eIF2α signaling was significantly activated in pulmonary arteries from hypoxia exposed rats and PASMCs cultured under hypoxia condition. Treatment with mTOR inhibitor for 21 days attenuated vascular remodeling, suppressed mTOR and eIF2α activation, inhibited c-myc expression in HPH rats. In hypoxia-induced PASMCs, rapamycin and knockdown of mTOR and eIF2α by siRNA significantly abolished proliferation and increased c-myc expression. These results suggest a critical role of the mTOR/eIF2αpathway in hypoxic vascular remodeling and PASMCs proliferation of HPH.

Background Iron deficiency in infancy is associated with a range of clinical and developmentally important issues. Currently, it is unclear what is the optimal timing to administer prophylactic enteral iron supplementation in preterm and very low birth weight infants. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate early compared with late iron supplementation in low birth weight infants. Methods PubMed and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to May 10, 2014 for studies that compared the benefit of early and late iron supplementation in infants of low birth weight. Sensitivity analysis was carried out using the leave one-out approach and the quality of the included data was assessed. Results The data base search and detailed review identified four studies that were included in the meta-analysis. The number of included patients was 246 (n = 121 for early supplementation and n = 125 for late supplementation) and the majority were premature infants. Across studies, early supplementation ranged from as early as enteral feeding was tolerated to 3 weeks, and late supplementation ranged from 4 weeks to about 60 days. Early treatment was associated with significantly smaller decreases in serum ferritin and hemoglobin levels (P bell stage 2) (P = 0.646). Sensitivity analysis indicated no one study overly influenced the findings and that the data was reliable. Conclusion In conclusion, early iron supplementation resulted in less a decrease in serum ferritin and hemoglobin levels in infants with low birth rate. However, caution should be used when treating infants with iron so as not to result in iron overload and possibly negative long-term effects on neurodevelopment.

To investigate the antitumor activity and safety of a novel recombinant mutant human tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (rmh TRAIL). Antitumor activity of rmh TRAIL was evaluated by using several tumor cell lines by MTT assay in vitro, and by using a mouse xenograft model in vivo. rmh TRAIL-induced apoptosis in tumor cells was detected by cell death enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay and flow cytometry. The safety of rmh TRAIL was also evaluated in several normal human cell lines. At the concentration of 0.32–1000 ng/mL, rmh TRAIL remarkably inhibited the proliferation of 5 tumor cell lines from lung, colon, and breast cancer compared with wild type (wt TRAIL) in vitro, whereas at the concentration of 1 ng/mL-10 μg/mL, rmh TRAIL showed no or mild cytotoxicity in the normal cell lines. rmh TRAIL (3,15 mg/kg, ip, once daily for 10 d) exerted a significant inhibition on the growth of xenograft tumor NCI-H460 in nude mice compared with the saline group (P

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a receptor for bacterial lipopolysaccharide, which is suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of disease of hepatobiliary tracts. To explore a possible role for this receptor in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), we investigated the expression of TLR4 in liver tissues from PBC patients. We studied liver biopsy sections from 62 PBC patients and 41 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Expression of TLR4 in paraffin-embedded sections was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The bile duct epithelial cells (BECs) of PBC liver tissues markedly expressed TLR4, whereas BECs of CHC liver tissues barely expressed TLR4. The TLR4 expression was also observed in periportal hepatocytes of PBC liver tissues and its expression was extended to interlobular hepatocytes in advanced stage PBC. Although periportal hepatocytes of CHC liver tissues expressed TLR4, its expression levels were not correlated with the fibrosis stage. Our data demonstrated that TLR4 was expressed in BECs and periportal hepatocytes in PBC livers, suggesting the possible involvement of bacterial pathogens and TLR4 in the inflammatory processes of PBC.

A highly dense Ni59Zr20Ti16Si2Sn3 partial amorphous metallic coating, about 500 mu m thick, was fabricated by means of HVAF (High Velocity Air Fuel) thermal spraying. Amorphous alloy powders produced by using gas atomization were used for HVAF thermal spraying to produce an amorphous metallic coating. Microstructural investigation showed that crystallization and oxidation occurred during thermal spraying. The volume fraction of amorphous phase in the coating is 44% as determined by using differential scanning calorimetry. Studies of the wear and corrosion properties of the resulting coating were also performed. The corrosion characteristics of the coating are sensitive to aqueous solutions selected. It exhibits good corrosion resistance in 0.05 kmol/m(3) H2SO4 + 0.05 kmol/m(3) Na2SO4 aqueous solution due to low passive current density and wide passive region.
