China faces increasing health risks from climate change. The structure and function of the eye and vision were affected by extreme heat and cold. The study aimed to evaluate the impacts of heatwaves and cold spells on glaucoma. A national cross-sectional study of the Rural Epidemiology for Glaucoma (REG-China) was conducted in ten provinces of China, and 36,081 adults aged 40 years or more were included. Glaucoma signs were assessed via a standard examination. A total of 15 heatwave definitions, based on intensity (95th to 99th percentiles of temperature distribution) and duration (≥2 days, 3 days, and 4 days), were used to quantify heatwave effects, and 6 cold spell definitions were defined based on threshold temperature percentile (5th and 10th) and duration (3 days, 5 days, and 9 days). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models paired with interaction analysis were performed to investigate the impacts of heatwaves and cold spells on glaucoma, and the dose-response relationships were assessed using a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model. Subgroup analysis was conducted stratified by gender, age, smoking status, occupation, and family history of glaucoma. The overall prevalence of glaucoma was 2.1% (95% CI 1.94–2.25%). Higher heatwaves were significantly correlated with higher OR of glaucoma, with the OR (95% CI) ranging from 1.014 (1.009, 1.018) to 1.090 (1.065, 1.115) by different definitions. Glaucoma was affected by heatwaves more strongly than by cold spells. The effects of both heatwaves and cold spells were higher in males than females and in smokers than nonsmokers. These results of the present study evoked the attention of prospective research to elucidate the relationship between extreme temperatures and eye diseases.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne infectious disease with a high case fatality rate. Key gaps remained as to the assessment of the clinical picture in fatal cases.A retrospective study was performed on 496 patients with fatal SFTS. The dynamic pattern of clinical manifestations and laboratory indicators were delineated.The mean age of the fatal cases was 69.0 years (standard deviation: 9.3), and 52.8% were male. The median clinical course from disease onset to death was 11 (interquartile range: 10-13) days. A total of 11 laboratory indicators (neutrophil %, platelet, aspartate aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase/alanine transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, cystatin C, D-dimer, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, glucose) persistently deviated from normality across hospitalization. The critical time points when the rapid worsening of the indicators was at 6-9 days after disease onset. Alanine transaminase, AST, lactate dehydrogenase, total bile acid, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and glucose were all elevated to a more pronounced level in fatal cases of those aged ≤70 years.The fatal outcome was developed in rather a short course after the disease onset of SFTS. High vigilance should be put on the key time points when the severe worsening and severe complications occur.

Von Willebrand factor (VWF) encodes a secreted glycoprotein involved in primary hemostasis. Genetic mutations in this gene leading to either quantitation or qualitative defects of VWF, result in von Willebrand disease (VWD), an inherited bleeding disorder.In this study, two families with VWD were recruited and submitted to a series of clinical and genetic examinations. prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, factor VIII coagulant activity (FVIII:C), VWF antigen (VWF:Ag), VWF ristocetin cofactor (VWF:RCo) tests were measured in peripheral blood. F8, F9, and VWF genes were sequenced using next-generation sequencing, and Sanger sequencing was used as a validation method.Both families had a child suffered spontaneous bleeding. Patient 1 showed normal VWF:Ag, severely decreased FVIII:C and VWF:RCo. Patient 2 showed severely decreased FVIII:C, VWF:Ag, and VWF:RCo. Compound heterozygous mutations of VWF gene were identified in both patients. Patient 1 had a novel deletion variant c.1910_1932del (p.Gly637AlafsTer5) and a missense variant c.605GA (p.Arg202Gln). Patient 2 had a novel missense variant c.4817TA (p.Met1606Lys) and a novel missense variant c.5983CT (p.Pro1995Ser).We described clinical and molecular features of VWD caused by compound heterozygous mutations in two Chinese patients. Our results expand the variation spectrum of the VWF gene and deepen the understanding of the relationship between the genotype and clinical characteristics of VWD.

Plastic mulching reduces weeds, conserves soil water, and boosts crop yield. However, most studies are insufficient when determining how plastic mulching affects greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly when used in conjunction with fertilizers. The purpose of this study was to determine the combined effect of plastic mulching and fertilizers on GHG emissions in apple orchards. A 3-year field experiment was conducted with two factors: mulching and fertilizers; (1) mulching treatments: plastic film (PM) and no mulching (NM); and (2) four fertilizer treatments: control (CK), organic fertilizer (M), inorganic fertilizer (NPK), and organic combined with inorganic fertilizer (MNPK), arranged in a two factorial randomized complete block design. The results showed that the mean annual N2O emissions ranged from 0.87 to 5.07 kg ha−1 in PM and from 0.75 to 2.90 kg ha−1 in NM. The mean CO2 emissions ranged from 2.10 to 6.68 t ha−1 in PM and from 1.98 to 4.27 t ha−1 in NM. MNPK contributed more to N2O and CO2 emissions in both PM and NM. The mean CH4 uptake rate ranged from 1.19 to 4.25 kg ha−1 in PM and from 1.14 to 6.75 kg ha−1 in NM. M treatment contributed more to CH4 uptake in both PM and NM. NKP treatments had higher greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) in PM and NM, while MNPK and NPK treatments had higher greenhouse gas potential (GWP) in PM and NM, respectively. These results suggest that plastic film mulching significantly raises the potential for soil GHG emissions and increases apple yield.

The catalytic activity and cyclic catalysis of different methyl benzoates were studied by using a series of Lewis solid acid catalysts. The iron-supported zirconium/titanium solid acid catalysts were characterized using FTIR, SEM, XRD, and BET. The details of catalytic activity and cyclic catalysis verified that the catalyst catalyzed the reactions of 31 benzoic acids with different substituents and methanol. In addition, the mechanism was revealed according to the microstructure, acid strength, and specific surface area of the catalysts, and the yields of methyl benzoates by the GC-MS. Zr ions had significant effects on the catalytic activity of the catalyst. A certain proportion of Fe and Ti ions additionally enhanced the catalytic activity of the catalyst, with the catalyst-specific composition of Fe:Zr:Ti = 2:1:1 showing optimal catalytic activity. A variety of substituents in the benzene ring, such as the electron-withdrawing group, the electron-donating group, large steric hindrance, and the position of the group on the benzene ring, had regular effects on the catalytic activity of the methyl benzoates. An increase in the catalyst activity occurred owing to the increases in the catalyst surface and the number of acid sites after the Fe ion was added. The catalytic activity remained unchanged after the facile recycling method was performed.

Dengue remains a public health issue worldwide. Similar to chronic infectious diseases, stimulation of cytokine production is not enough to drive immune effector cells for effective virus clearance. One possible mechanism is the virus induces a large number of negative stimulatory cytokines inhibiting immune response. Interleukin 37 (IL-37) plays a crucial regulatory role in infection and immunity, inhibits innate and adaptive immunity as an anti-inflammatory cytokine by inhibiting proinflammatory mediators and pathways. To date, there are few studies reporting correlations between dengue fever (DF) and IL-37. In this study we found that the serum IL-37b and IL-37b-producing monocytes in patients were significantly increased in DF patients. A majority of the IL-37b produced by DF patients was produced by monocytes, not lymphocytes. Increased levels of IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-α were also found in DF patients. However, we failed to detect IL-1β, IL-17A and TNF-α in plasma, because of off-target. In our study, there was no relation between IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-α expressions and IL-37b in serum (P > 0.05). Colorectal cancer patients face physical, psychological, and social difficulties. Psychosocial therapies appear to be successful in improving cancer patients’ psychological and social results. Preoperative and postoperative psychological therapies for colorectal surgery patients have not been extensively studied. During their treatment, up to 35% of cancer patients experience clinically severe psychological discomfort. As a consequence, a greater knowledge of health-related quality of life and its causes can assist oncology nurses in developing effective treatments to improve the health-related quality of life. The palliative care model and the nursing intervention model are used in this study to assess the effectiveness of an individually customized nursing intervention for lowering chemotherapy-related symptom distress in adult patients with colorectal cancer. Initially, the dataset is collected and split into the control group and the experimental group. The patient conditions are evaluated using the novel accelerated gradient boosting regression tree (AGBRT) estimation model. For improving the evaluation process, we have proposed the enriched gravitational search optimization algorithm (EGSOA). The system’s success is evaluated in terms of the patients’ psychological well-being and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: To explore the development of central nervous system (CNS) symptoms and clinical application in predicting the clinical outcomes of SARS-COV-2 patients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on the hospitalized patients with SARS-COV-2 recruited from four hospitals in Hubei Province, China from 18 January to 10 March 2020. The patients with CNS symptoms were determined. Data regarding clinical symptoms and laboratory tests were collected from medical records. RESULTS: Of 1268 patients studied, 162 (12.8%) had CNS symptoms, manifested as unconsciousness (71, 5.6%), coma (69, 5.4%), dysphoria (50, 3.9%), somnolence (34, 2.7%) and convulsion (3, 0.2%), which were observed at median of 14 (interquartile range 9-18) days after symptom onset and significantly associated with older age (OR = 5.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.78-11.73), male (OR = 1.73, 95% CI 1.22-2.47) and preexisting hypertension (OR = 1.78, 95% CI 1.23-2.57). Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), the leading monogenic cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, is caused by expansion of a CGG trinucleotide repeat in the 5ʹ-UTR of the Fragile X Mental Retardation-1 (FMR1) gene. Epigenetic silencing of FMR1 results in loss of the Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP). Although most studies to date have focused on excitatory neurons, recent evidence suggests that GABAergic inhibitory networks are also affected. To investigate human GABAergic neurogenesis, we established a method to reproducibly derive inhibitory neurons from multiple FXS and control human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) lines. Electrophysiological analyses suggested that the developing FXS neurons had a delay in the GABA functional switch, a transition in fetal development that converts the GABAA channel’s function from depolarization to hyperpolarization, with profound effects on the developing brain. To investigate the cause of this delay, we analyzed 14 400 single-cell transcriptomes from FXS and control cells at 2 stages of GABAergic neurogenesis. While control and FXS cells were similar at the earlier time point, the later-stage FXS cells retained expression of neuroblast proliferation-associated genes and had lower levels of genes associated with action potential regulation, synapses, and mitochondria compared with controls. Our analysis suggests that loss of FMRP prolongs the proliferative stage of progenitors, which may result in more neurons remaining immature during the later stages of neurogenesis. This could have profound implications for homeostatic excitatory-inhibitory circuit development in FXS, and suggests a novel direction for understanding disease mechanisms that may help to guide therapeutic interventions.

As a class of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), corticosteroids (CSs) have attracted increasing attention due to their large excretion masses and toxic effects. However, compared to the very well-studied estrogens and androgens, few studies have been made dealing with the removal of CSs at environmentally relevant concentrations using advanced water and wastewater treatment processes. In this study, degradation performances of 26 natural and synthetic CSs in secondary effluent at environmentally relevant concentrations were comparatively investigated during UV/free chlorine (UV/Cl2), UV/monochloramine (UV/NH2Cl) and UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) treatments. The 26 CSs could be divided into two groups: UV sensitive CSs, which have two double bonds in ring A (Δ1,4), and UV insensitive CSs, which have only one double bond in ring A (Δ4). The UV sensitive CSs could be effectively removed (removal efficiency >60%) by a UV dose of 100 mJ cm−2 while the UV insensitive CSs could be removed (removal efficiency >40%) by a UV dose of 800 mJ cm−2. Background: Buildings in high altitude region often face low pressure and low humidity service environment, which has a great impact on the mechanical properties and durability of cement-based materials. Objective: In this paper, the effects of nano-silica (NS) on the strength and water absorption of cement mortar exposed to the low pressure and low humidity environment were studied. Methods: Mechanical properties (compressive strength and flexural strength) and durability (water absorption) were measured. And the hydration degree of cement was tested to assist analysis. Results: The flexural strength of mortar decreased and the compressive strength increased slowly after 28 days of exposure under low pressure and low humidity environment. Especially, the introduction of 1% NS could reduce the compressive strength loss and flexural strength loss of mortar under low pressure and low humidity environment. It was also found that the water absorption of the mortar in low pressure and low humidity environment was related to the tortuous degree of the pores inside the specimen. Conclusion: The introduction of 1% NS contributed the most to the mechanical properties (compressive strength and flexural strength) and durability (water absorption) of cement mortar.

Background To combat the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were implemented worldwide, which impacted a broad spectrum of acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Methods Etiologically diagnostic data from 142 559 cases with ARIs, who were tested for 8 viral pathogens (influenza virus [IFV], respiratory syncytial virus [RSV], human parainfluenza virus [HPIV], human adenovirus [HAdV], human metapneumovirus [HMPV], human coronavirus [HCoV], human bocavirus [HBoV], and human rhinovirus [HRV]) between 2012 and 2021, were analyzed to assess the changes in respiratory infections in China during the first COVID-19 pandemic year compared with pre-pandemic years. Results Test-positive rates of all respiratory viruses decreased during 2020, compared to the average levels during 2012–2019, with changes ranging from −17.2% for RSV to −87.6% for IFV. Sharp decreases mostly occurred between February and August when massive NPIs remained active, although HRV rebounded to the historical level during the summer. While IFV and HMPV were consistently suppressed year-round, RSV, HPIV, HCoV, HRV, and HBoV resurged and went beyond historical levels during September 2020–January 2021, after NPIs were largely relaxed and schools reopened. Resurgence was more prominent among children Conclusions Activities of respiratory viral infections were reduced substantially in the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, and massive NPIs were likely the main driver. Lifting of NPIs can lead to resurgence of viral infections, particularly in children.

Efficient destruction of perfluoroalkyl compounds in contaminated waters remains a challenge because of highly stable C-F bonds. In this study, mineralization of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with high concentration (∼30 mg/L) was realized in a needle-plate pulsed discharge reactor integrated with a water jet (NPDW) to which microbubbles (MBs) with different carrier gases (air, N2, and Ar) were introduced to enhance interfacial reactions. MBs effectively enrich dispersed PFOA from a bulk solution to a liquid surface to allow enhancing contact with reactive species and also expanding the plasma discharge area and channels. The PFOA removal efficiency in air and Ar discharge reached 81.5 and 95.3% in 2 h, respectively, with a defluorination ratio of no less than 50%. Energy requirements (EE/O) ranged from 216.49 to 331.95 kWh/m3. Aside from fluoride, PFOA was degraded to a range of short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids and, to a minor extent, at least 20 other fluorinated transformation products. PFOA degradation mechanisms were proposed, including decarboxylation, hydroxylation, hydrogenation reduction, and defluorination reactions. Real water matrices (groundwater, tap water, wastewater effluent, and surface water) showed moderate impact on treatment outcomes, demonstrating the robustness of the treatment process. The study demonstrated an environmentally friendly nonthermal plasma technology for effective PFOA degradation.

Background In the past few decades, globalization has rendered more frequent and intensive population movement between countries, which has changed the original disease spectrum and brought a huge health impact on the global population including China. This study aims to describe the spectrum and epidemiological characteristics of imported infections among foreign travelers travelling to China. Methods The data on imported infections among foreign travelers were obtained from Custom Inbound Screening System (CISS) and the National Notifiable Infectious Disease Reporting System (NNIDRS). All the infections were classified into respiratory, gastrointestinal, vector-borne, blood/sex-transmitted and mucocutaneous diseases, of which case numbers and incidences were calculated and the proportions were compared among subgroups. Results In total, 17,189 travelers diagnosed with 58 imported infectious diseases were reported from 2014 to 2018, with an overall incidence of 122.59 per million. Respiratory infection (7,351 cases, mainly influenza) and blood/sex-transmitted diseases (6,114 cases mainly Hepatitis B and HIV infection) were the most frequently diagnosed diseases, followed by vector-borne infections (3,128 cases, mainly dengue fever and malaria). The highest case number was from Asia and Europe, while the highest incidence rate was from Africa (296.00 per million). When specific diagnosis was compared, both the highest absolute case number and incidence were observed for influenza. An obvious seasonal pattern was observed for vector-borne diseases, with the annual epidemic spanning from July to November. The origin–destination matrices disclosed the movement of imported infection followed specific routes. Conclusions Our study provided a profile of infectious diseases among foreign travelers travelling to China and pinpointed the target regions, seasons and populations for prevention and control, to attain an informed control of imported infections in China.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) have drawn great concern due to widespread contamination in the environment and application in treating COVID-19. Most studies on GC removal mainly focused on aquatic environment, while GC behaviors in soil were less mentioned. In this study, degradation of three selected GCs in soil has been investigated using citric acid (CA)-modified Fenton-like processes (H2O2/Fe(III)/CA and CaO2/Fe(III)/CA treatments). The results showed that GCs in soil can be removed by modified Fenton-like processes (removal efficiency gt; 70% for 24 h). CaO2/Fe(III)/CA was more efficient than H2O2/Fe(III)/CA at low oxidant dosage ( 4 h). Besides the chemical assessment with GC removal, effects of Fenton-like processes were also evaluated by biological assessments with bacteria and plants. CaO2/Fe(III)/CA was less harmful to the richness and diversity of microorganisms in soil compared to H2O2/Fe(III)/CA. Weaker phytotoxic effects were observed on GC-contaminated soil treated by CaO2/Fe(III)/CA than H2O2/Fe(III)/CA. This study, therefore, recommends CaO2-based treatments to remediate GC-contaminated soils.

Prenatal adverse exposures have been associated with increased risks of development of respiratory diseases in children. Ticks are important vectors of various zoonotic pathogens that can infect animals and humans, and most documented tick-borne pathogens have a strong bias towards microorganisms with strong disease phenotypes. The recent development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) has enabled the study of microbial communities, referred to as microbiome. Herein, we undertake a systematic review of published literature to build a comprehensive global dataset of microbiome determined by NGS in field-collected ticks. The dataset comprised 4418 records from 76 literature involving geo-referenced occurrences for 46 species of ticks and 219 microorganism families, revealing a total of 83 emerging viruses identified from 24 tick species belonging to 6 tick genera since 1980. The viral, bacterial and eukaryotic composition was compared regarding the tick species, their live stage and types of the specimens, or the geographic location. The data can assist the further investigation of ecological, biogeographical and epidemiological features of the tick-borne disease.

Activated carbon (AC) adsorption is a prevalent method for printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW) treatment, but restricted by adsorption active site depletion. The regeneration by thermal desorption or chemical oxidation is liable to destroy carbon structure as well as consume carbon composition, leading to few service cycles. Herein, we establish a sustainable hydrothermal regeneration for methylene blue (MB) exhausted AC. The absorbed MB was converted to its pyrrolic-N-containing hydrochar attached on regenerated AC, supporting 11 adsorption-regeneration cycles caused by the property shift from physical to chemical adsorption. Meanwhile, pyrrolic-N could reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) over a wide pH range of 3.0-9.0 via direct electron donation, and enabled recycling final regenerated AC once more. This approach is tailored to the dyes with the same quinonimine group as MB. So, the carbon capture for the simultaneous removal of dye and Cr(VI) in PDW can be implemented, while providing a novel green methodology to fabricate pyrrolic-N-loaded carbon material.
