We present a super-Earth orbiting close to the inner edge of the habitable zone of the cool dwarf star K2-286 (EPIC 249889081), detected with data from the K2 mission in its 15th campaign. The planet has radius of 2.1 ± 0.2 R
⊕ , near the 1.5–2.0 R⊕ gap in the radii distribution. The equilibrium temperature is |$347^{+21}_{-11}$| K, cooler than most of the small planets with well-measured masses, and the orbital period is 27.359 ± 0.005 d. K2-286, located at a distance of 76.3 ± 0.3 pc, is an M0V star with estimated effective temperature of 3926 ± 100 K, less active than other M dwarf stars hosting exoplanets. The expected radial velocity semi-amplitude induced by the planet on the star is |$1.9^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$| m s−1 , and the amplitude of signals in transit transmission spectroscopy is estimated at 5.0 ± 3.0 ppm. Follow-up observations for mass measurements and transit spectroscopy should be desirable for this relatively bright target (mV = 12.76, mKs = 9.32) hosting a transiting super-Earth within the inner edge of the habitable zone. With the aim of probing the properties of the bright end of the Pristine survey and its effectiveness in selecting metal-poor stars, we selected a sample of bright candidate metal-poor stars combining Pristine CaHK photometry with APASS gi photometry, before the Gaia second data release became available. These stars were observed with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the 1.93 m telescope of Observatoire de Haute Provence and we used photometry and parallaxes from Gaia DR2 to derive their atmospheric parameters. Chemical abundances were determined from the spectra for 40 stars of the sample. Eight stars were confirmed to be very metal-poor ([Fe/H] < −2.0), as expected from the photometric estimate. No star was found with [Fe/H] < −3.0, although for nine stars the photometric estimate was below this value. Three multiple systems are identified from their multipeaked cross-correlation functions. Two metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] ≈ −1.0 have an age estimate of about 4 Gyr. Accretion from a satellite galaxy is a possible explanation for these 'young metal-poor stars', but they could also be field blue stragglers. Galactic orbits for our sample of stars allowed us to divide them into three classes that we label 'Halo', 'Thick', and 'Thin' and tentatively identify as halo, thick disc, and thin disc. We present a new method for deriving photometric metallicities, effective temperatures, and surface gravities by combining Gaia parallaxes, photometry, and Pristine CaHK photometry. Comparison with spectroscopic metallicities shows a very good agreement and suggests that we can further improve the efficiency of Pristine CaHK in selecting metal-poor stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (2014 July–2017 July). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the 15th from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA—we release 4824 data cubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g., stellar and gas kinematics, emission-line and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline, and a new data visualization and access tool we call "Marvin." The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper, we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials, and examples of data use. Although SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020–2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data.

The cosmological {7Li problem consists in explaining why the primordial Li abundance, as predicted by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory with constraints from WMAP and Planck, is a factor of 3 larger than the Li abundance measured in the stars of the Spite plateau defined by old, warm dwarf stars of the Milky Way halo. Several explanations have been proposed to explain this difference, including various Li depletion processes as well as non standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis, but the main question remains unanswered. In this paper, we present detailed chemical evolution models for dwarf spheroidal and ultra faint galaxies, compute the galactic evolution of 7Li abundance in these objects and compare it with observations of similar objects. In our models, Li is mainly produced by novae and cosmic rays and to a minor extent by low and intermediate mass stars. We adopt the yield combination which best fits the Li abundances in the Milky Way stars. It is evident that the observations of dwarf objects define a Spite plateau, identical to that observed in the Milky Way, thus suggesting that the Spite plateau could be a universal feature and its meaning should be discussed. The predictions of our models for dwarf galaxies, are obtained by assuming as Li primordial abundance either the one detected in the atmospheres of the oldest halo stars (Spite plateau; A(Li)=2.2 dex), or the one from cosmological observations (WMAP; A(Li)=2.66 dex). Finally, we discuss the implications of the universality of the Spite plateau results., 7 pages, 4 figures

The Pristine survey uses narrow-band photometry to derive precise metallicities down to the extremely metal-poor regime ([Fe/H] < -3), and currently consists of over 4 million FGK-type stars over a sky area of $\sim 2~500\, \mathrm{deg}^2$. We focus our analysis on a subsample of $\sim 80~000$ main sequence turnoff stars with heliocentric distances between 6 and 20 kpc, which we take to be a representative sample of the inner halo. The resulting metallicity distribution function (MDF) has a peak at [Fe/H] = -1.6, and a slope of $$(LogN)/$[Fe/H] = 1.0 \pm 0.1$ in the metallicity range of -3.4 < [Fe/H] < -2.5. This agrees well with a simple closed-box chemical enrichment model in this range, but is shallower than previous spectroscopic MDFs presented in the literature, suggesting that there may be a larger proportion of metal-poor stars in the inner halo than previously reported. We identify the Monoceros/TriAnd/ACS/EBS/A13 structure in metallicity space in a low latitude field in the anticenter direction, and also discuss the possibility that the inner halo is dominated by a single, large merger event, but cannot strongly support or refute this idea with the current data. Finally, based on the MDF of field stars, we estimate the number of expected metal-poor globular clusters in the Milky Way halo to be 5.4 for [Fe/H] < -2.5 and 1.5 for [Fe/H] < -3, suggesting that the lack of low metallicity globular clusters in the Milky Way is not due simply to statistical undersampling., 17 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS
