Abstract The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) owns three journals: Allergy, Pediatric Allergy and Immunology and Clinical and Translational Allergy. One of the major goals of EAACI is to support health promotion in which prevention of allergy and asthma plays a critical role and to disseminate the knowledge of allergy to all stakeholders including the EAACI junior members. There was substantial progress in 2017 in the identification of basic mechanisms of allergic and respiratory disease and the translation of these mechanisms into clinics. Better understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms, efforts for the development of biomarkers for disease prediction, novel prevention and intervention studies, elucidation of mechanisms of multimorbidies, entrance of new drugs in the clinics as well as recently completed phase three clinical studies and publication of a large number of allergen immunotherapy studies and metaanalyses have been the highlights of the last year.

Background: Nasal hyperreactivity (NHR) is a common feature of various rhinitis subtypes and represents a novel phenotype of rhinitis. It is being reported in two-thirds of adult rhinitis patients irrespective of the atopic status. Data on the prevalence of NHR in patients with asthma are lacking, as well as the nature of evoking triggers. Methods: Postal questionnaires were distributed to an unselected group of asthmatic patients in Leuven (Belgium, n = 190) and completed by 114 patients. In Mexico City (Mexico) and Brasov (Romania), respectively, 97 out of 110 and 80 out of 100 asthmatic patients attending the outpatient clinic completed the questionnaire. Non-asthmatic volunteers were recruited amongst university and hospital co-workers in Leuven (n = 53). The presence of self-reported NHR, the type of triggers evoking nasal and bronchial symptoms, medication use, self-reported allergy, and environmental factors were evaluated. Results: Overall, 69% of asthma patients reported NHR, with 32% having more than 4 triggers evoking NHR. These triggers included mainly exposure to temperature and humidity changes, cigarette smoke, and strong odours. Abstract mHealth, such as apps running on consumer smart devices is becoming increasingly popular and has the potential to profoundly affect healthcare and health outcomes. However, it may be disruptive and results achieved are not always reaching the goals. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline using the best evidence-based approach to care pathways suited to real-life using mobile technology in allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. Patients largely use over-the-counter medications dispensed in pharmacies. Shared decision making centered around the patient and based on self-management should be the norm. Mobile Airways Sentinel networK (MASK), the Phase 3 ARIA initiative, is based on the freely available MASK app (the Allergy Diary, Android and iOS platforms). MASK is available in 16 languages and deployed in 23 countries. The present paper provides an overview of the methods used in MASK and the key results obtained to date. These include a novel phenotypic characterization of the patients, confirmation of the impact of allergic rhinitis on work productivity and treatment patterns in real life. Most patients appear to self-medicate, are often non-adherent and do not follow guidelines. Moreover, the Allergy Diary is able to distinguish between AR medications. The potential usefulness of MASK will be further explored by POLLAR (Impact of Air Pollution on Asthma and Rhinitis), a new Horizon 2020 project using the Allergy Diary.

Introduction: Periodontal disease and emphysematous pyelonephritis, 2 independent pathologies, were determined by ineffective blood glucose monitoring. Emphysematous pyelonephritis is commonly associated with diabetes, especially in women, with impaired immune system and urinary tract obstruction, which subsequently over-infects. Predisposing factors are: diabetes mellitus, end stage renal disease, immunosuppression, urinary tract obstruction, and rarely polycystic kidney disease. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the gum and deep periodontal tissues, preceded and accompanied by gingivitis. The primary etiology of the periodontal lesion is anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Tannerella forsythensis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter rectus, and Treponema denticola. Clinical-case: A 71-year-old patient known for complex pathology addressed our clinic due to lower urinary tract symptoms (pollakiuria, dysuria). The clinical examination reports: overall influenced condition, afebrile, at the level of the oral cavity: generalized inflammation, gingival recession, plaque deposits, small bleeding, swelling and inflammation, abnormal gingival anatomy owing to tissue destruction. Chemistry panel reveals inflammatory syndrome, metabolic acidosis, hyperglycemia, pathological urinalysis (leukocyturia, hematuria, microbial flora, ketone bodies), and urine culture positive for E. coli, multidrug resistant (sensitive to Meropenem, Linezolid). The medical imaging (abdominal ultrasound, abdominopelvic CT scan with contrast medium) show lesions associated with emphysematous pyelonephritis. Corroborating the anamnestic, clinical and paraclinical data, the patient was diagnosed with right emphysematous pyelonephritis, periodontal disease and diabetic ketoacidosis. Conclusion: After early initiation of the maximum therapeutic regimen (antibiotic therapy, double J stent and percutaneous nephrostomy), the patient presented a worsening in dynamic of the general condition, chemistry panel and imaging aspect (disorganization of the renal architecture, gas bubbles) the reason why radical nephrectomy was required. Clinical-biological post-operative evolution was good. Adjustment of glycemic values ​​in diabetic patients result in improvement of the periodontal disease symptomatology.

Abstract On March 29, 2017, a European Summit on the Prevention and Self-Management of Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRD) was organized by the European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases. The event took place in the European Parliament of Brussels and was hosted by MEP David Borrelli and MEP Sirpa Pietikainen. The aim of the Summit was to correspond to the needs of the European Commission and of patients suffering from CRD to join forces in Europe for the prevention and self-management. Delegates of the European Rhinologic Society, European Respiratory Society, European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, European Academy of Paediatrics, and European Patients Organization EFA all lectured on their vision and action plan to join forces in achieving adequate prevention and self-management of CRD in the context of Precision Medicine. Recent data highlight the preventive capacity of education on optimal care pathways for CRD. Self-management and patient empowerment can be achieved by novel educational on-line materials and by novel mobile health tools enabling patients and doctors to monitor and optimally treat CRDs based on the level of control. This report summarizes the contributions of the representatives of different European academic stakeholders in the field of CRD.

Abstract A Good Practice is a practice that works well, produces good results, and is recommended as a model. MACVIA-ARIA Sentinel Network (MASK), the new Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative, is an example of a Good Practice focusing on the implementation of multi-sectoral care pathways using emerging technologies with real life data in rhinitis and asthma multi-morbidity. The European Union Joint Action on Chronic Diseases and Promoting Healthy Ageing across the Life Cycle (JA-CHRODIS) has developed a checklist of 28 items for the evaluation of Good Practices. SUNFRAIL (Reference Sites Network for Prevention and Care of Frailty and Chronic Conditions in community dwelling persons of EU Countries), a European Union project, assessed whether MASK is in line with the 28 items of JA-CHRODIS. A short summary was proposed for each item and 18 experts, all members of ARIA and SUNFRAIL from 12 countries, assessed the 28 items using a Survey Monkey-based questionnaire. A visual analogue scale (VAS) from 0 (strongly disagree) to 100 (strongly agree) was used. Agreement equal or over 75% was observed for 14 items (50%). MASK is following the JA-CHRODIS recommendations for the evaluation of Good Practices.

The ARIA initiative was started during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999. The initial goals were to propose a new classification for allergic rhinitis, to promote the concept of multi-morbidity in asthma and rhinitis and to develop guidelines with stakeholders for world-wide use. ARIA is now focused on the implementation of emerging technologies for individualized and predictive medicine. MASK: MACVIA-Aria Sentinel Network uses mobile technology to develop care pathways that enable management by a multidisciplinary group or by patients themselves. An App for iOS and Android uses a visual analogue scale to assess symptom control and work productivity, as well as a clinical decision support system; it is associated with an interoperable tablet for health professionals. The escalation strategy uses recommendations of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. The aim of ARIA’s new approach is to provide an active and healthy life to people affected by rhinitis, regardless of age, gender or socioeconomic status, in order to reduce social and health inequalities caused by the disease.

Abstract Background There is clinical uncertainty about the effectiveness and safety of allergen immunotherapy (AIT) for the treatment of allergic asthma. Objectives To undertake a systematic overview of the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and safety of AIT for the treatment of allergic asthma. Methods We searched nine electronic databases from inception to October 31, 2015. Systematic reviews were independently screened by two reviewers against pre-defined eligibility criteria and critically appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme quality assessment tool for systematic reviews. Data were descriptively and thematically synthesized. Results We identified nine eligible systematic reviews; these focused on delivery of AIT through the following routes: subcutaneous (SCIT; n = 3); sublingual (SLIT; n = 4); and both SCIT and SLIT (n = 2). This evidence found that AIT delivered by SCIT and SLIT can improve medication and symptom scores and measures of bronchial hyper-reactivity. The impact on measures of lung function or asthma control was however less clear. We found no systematic review level evidence on the cost-effectiveness of SCIT or SLIT. SLIT had a favorable safety profile when compared to SCIT, particularly in relation to the risk of systemic reactions. Conclusions AIT has the potential to achieve reductions in symptom and medication scores, but there is no clear or consistent evidence that measures of lung function can be improved. Bearing in mind the limitations of synthesizing evidence from systematic reviews and the fact that these reviews include mainly dated studies, a systematic review of current primary studies is now needed to update this evidence base, estimate the effectiveness of AIT on asthma outcomes and to investigate the relative effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and safety of SCIT and SLIT.

A Campanha da Nacionalização foi um movimento organizado pelo governo ditatorial de Getúlio Vargas que teve início no ano de 1938 até o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Esta Campanha teve como alvo os moradores estrangeiros do Brasil e seus filhos, principalmente os imigrantes e descendentes de alemães. A principal medida que afetaria a vida destas pessoas seria a proibição de ler, escrever ou falar em outro idioma que não fosse o português. Por este motivo, muitas instituições que tinham sido organizadas pelas comunidades teuto-brasileiras, inclusive escolas comunitárias, clubes e igrejas, não tiveram outra opção senão a de adaptar-se as novas normas, ou simplesmente fechar as portas. Neste artigo analisamos como o Colégio Concórdia, de confissão luterana, adaptou-se a esse contexto. Buscamos por indícios sobre mudanças no ensino de matemática e nas práticas relacionadas a este ensino. Constatamos que os livros de matemática utilizados no ambiente escolar, como todo o material relacionado a vida escolar dos alunos foi traduzido integralmente para o português, no entanto, algumas práticas como a memorização da tabuada e a preocupação com a as quatro operações, no contexto de exercícios aplicados ao comércio, permaneceram até o final dos anos 1940.

We examined independent and interactive links among three central characteristics of children’s experiences in early childhood education and care and the German receptive vocabulary of single language learners and dual language learners (DLLs). We allowed for possible differential effects depending on children’s language background. Our sample included 2,231 children ( n = 1,555 single language learners, n = 371 DLLs from families in which German was frequently spoken, n = 305 DLLs from families in which German was less frequently spoken). Children attended 177 classrooms in 95 early childhood education and care centers and were 30 to 80 months old. We found that classroom process quality predicted German vocabulary only for DLLs with low exposure to German in the family. An earlier age at entry was linked to a larger German vocabulary for all children, but the link was stronger for DLLs from families with low exposure to German. Classroom composition did not predict German vocabulary.

Discoveries from basic science research in the last decade have brought significant progress in knowledge of pathophysiologic processes of allergic diseases, with a compelling impact on understanding of the natural history, risk prediction, treatment selection or mechanism-specific prevention strategies. The view of the pathophysiology of allergic diseases developed from a mechanistic approach, with a focus on symptoms and organ function, to the recognition of a complex network of immunological pathways. Several subtypes of inflammation and complex immune-regulatory networks and the reasons for their failure are now described, that open the way for the development of new diagnostic tools and innovative targeted-treatments. An endotype is a subtype of a disease condition, which is defined by a distinct pathophysiological mechanism, whereas a disease phenotype defines any observable characteristic of a disease without any implication of a mechanism. Another key word linked to disease endotyping is biomarker that is measured and evaluated to examine any biological or pathogenic processes, including response to a therapeutic intervention. These three keywords will be discussed more and more in the future with the upcoming efforts to revolutionize patient care in the direction of precision medicine and precision health. The understanding of disease endotypes based on pathophysiological principles and their validation across clinically meaningful outcomes in asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, atopic dermatitis and food allergy will be crucial for the success of precision medicine as a new approach to patient management.

This paper reports on a new system for liquid density and viscosity measurement based on a freely suspended rectangular vibrating plate actuated by piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) actuators. The Lamb mode used for these measurements allows us to infer both the density and viscosity in a larger range as compared to the existing gold-standard techniques of MEMS resonators. The combination of the measured resonance frequency and quality factor enables extraction of density and viscosity of the surrounding liquid. The system is calibrated while performing measurements in water glycerol solutions with a density range from 997 to 1264 kg/m3 and viscosity from 1.22 to 985 mPa·s, which is a larger dynamic range compared to existing mechanical resonators showing an upper limit of 700 mPa·s. The out-of-plane vibrating mode exhibits quality factor of 169, obtained in deionized water (1.22 mPa·s viscosity), and 93 for pure glycerol with a viscosity of 985 mPa·s. This Lamb wave resonating sensor can achieve measurement in fairly large viscosity media while keeping a quality factor superior to 90. Measurements performed on oil validate the use of the Lamb system. Oil density is evaluated at 939 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity at 43 mPa·s which corresponds to our expected values. This shows the possibility of using the sensor outside of the calibration range.

The quality of early childhood education and care (ECEC) is important for children’s development. One instrument that was developed to assess an aspect of ECEC quality is the Classroom Assessment Scoring System for pre-kindergarten children (CLASS Pre-K). We examined the factorial validity of the instrument using data from 177 German preschool classrooms. The three-factor teaching through interaction model (Hamre et al., 2013) was contrasted to a one-factor, a two-factor, and a bifactor model as proposed by Hamre et al. (2014). Our results indicated that the three-factor structure with the domains of emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support fit the data best. The fit of the teaching through interaction model was satisfying after adding a cross-loading of the dimension language modeling on emotional support, and two correlated residuals. Evidence of convergent and discriminant validity are provided. In terms of factor structure and pattern score comparisons, the results were similar to previous United States and German studies. The discussion concerns the justifiability of the factor model revisions and draws directions for further research. We concluded that our study offers further evidence of the applicability of the CLASS Pre-K for the assessment of teacher–child interaction quality in the German context.

A growing body of research has been documenting environmental factors that support preschoolers’ vocabulary skills. However, less is known about how environmental factors are related to morphological skills of dual language learners (DLLs) and single language learners (SLLs). We examined connections with preschool experiences by investigating the effects of duration of preschool attendance, classroom quality, and classroom composition variables (percentage of DLLs and percentage of children from families with a low socio-economic status) on preschoolers’ expressive morphological skills. Several multilevel regression models were estimated using cross-sectional data from 835 children (n = 255 DLLs) aged 30–47 months. These children were nested in 169 preschool classrooms in Germany. As a control task, we also investigated children’s phonological processing abilities, for which we found, as expected, no differences between DLLs and SLLs. Our main finding was that DLL children scored lower in expressive morphological skills than their German monolingual peers, but this difference was considerably smaller in classrooms that scored high in instructive teacher–child interactions (measured by the Classroom Assessment Scoring System for pre-kindergarten children; CLASS Pre-K). Taken together, these results support the notion that supportive teacher–child instructive interactions have a positive impact on the development of DLLs’ morphological skills.

Particle separation in microfluidic devices is a common problematic for sample preparation in biology. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) is efficiently implemented as a size-based fractionation technique to separate two populations of particles around a specific size. However, real biological samples contain components of many different sizes and a single DLD separation step is not sufficient to purify these complex samples. When connecting several DLD modules in series, pressure balancing at the DLD outlets of each step becomes critical to ensure an optimal separation efficiency. A generic microfluidic platform is presented in this paper to optimize pressure balancing, when DLD separation is connected either to another DLD module or to a different microfluidic function. This is made possible by generating droplets at T-junctions connected to the DLD outlets. Droplets act as pressure controllers, which perform at the same time the encapsulation of DLD sorted particles and the balance of output pressures. The optimized pressures to apply on DLD modules and on T-junctions are determined by a general model that ensures the equilibrium of the entire platform. The proposed separation platform is completely modular and reconfigurable since the same predictive model applies to any cascaded DLD modules of the droplet-based cartridge.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of rupatadine (RUP) versus desloratadine (DES) in subjects with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR).Method: To assess the efficacy and safety of RUP in SAR in comparison with placebo (PL) and DES. A randomized, double-blind, multicenter, international, and PL-controlled study was carried out. The main selection criteria included SAR patients over 12 years old with a positive prick test to a relevant seasonal allergen for the geographic area. Symptomatic patients at screening with a nasal symptom sum score of ≥6 points (nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, sneezing, and nasal pruritus), a non-nasal score of ≥3 points (ocular pruritus, ocular redness, and tearing eyes), and a rhinorrhea score of ≥2 points with laboratory test results and electrocardiography within acceptable limits were included in the study. Change from baseline in the total symptom-score (T7SS) over the 4-week treatment period (reflective evaluation) was considered the primary efficacy variable. Secondary efficacy measures included total nasal symptom score (T4NSS) and conjunctival symptom score (T3NNSS), both of which are reflective and instantaneous evaluations. Furthermore questions related to quality of life (eg, sleep disturbances or impairment of daily activities) have also been evaluated. Safety was assessed according to adverse events reported, as well as laboratory and electrocardiography controls.Results: A total of 379 patients were randomized, of which 356 were included and allocated to PL (n = 122), RUP (n = 117), or DES (n = 117). Mean change of T7SS over the 4-week treatment period was significantly reduced in the RUP (−46.1%, P = 0.03) and DES (−48.9%, P = 0.01) groups, compared with PL. Similarly, RUP and DES were comparable and significantly superior to PL for all secondary endpoints, including nasal and conjunctival symptoms and patients’ and investigator’s overall clinical opinions. Symptom score evaluation (both reflective and instantaneous evaluations) throughout the treatment period showed a progressive and maintained significant improvement with both treatments at day 7 (P = 0.01), day 14 (P = 0.007), and day 21 (P = 0.01) in comparison with PL. Adverse events were scarce and were similar in both treatment groups. Electrocardiography (QTc) and lab test results did not show any relevant findings.Conclusion: RUP is a very good choice for SAR due to its contribution to the improvement of nasal (including obstruction) and non-nasal symptoms to a similar degree as DES.Keywords: allergic rhinitis, seasonal, H1-antihistamines, rupatadine, desloratadine

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) is the only available curative treatment of allergic diseases. Recent evidence provided a plausible explanation to its multiple mechanisms inducing both rapid desensitization and long-term allergen-specific immune tolerance, and suppression of allergic inflammation in the affected tissues. During SIT, peripheral tolerance is induced by the generation of allergen-specific regulatory T cells, which suppress proliferative and cytokine responses against the allergen of interest. Regulatory T cells are characterized by IL-10 and TGF-beta secretion and expression of important cell surface suppressive molecules such as cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 and programmed death-1 that directly or indirectly influence effector cells of allergic inflammation, such as mast cells, basophils and eosinophils. Regulatory T cells and particularly IL-10 also have an influence on B cells, suppressing IgE production and inducing the production of blocking type IgG4 antibodies. In addition, development of allergen-specific B regulatory cells that produce IL-10 and develop into IgG4 producing plasma cells represent essential players in peripheral tolerance. These findings together with the new biotechnological approaches create a platform for development of the advanced vaccines. Moreover, reliable biomarkers could be selected and validated with the intention to select the patients who will benefit most from this immune-modifying treatment. Thus, allergen-SIT could provide a complete cure for a larger number of allergic patients and novel preventive approaches need to be elaborated.

Digital microfluidic has recently been under intensive study, as an effective method to carry out liquid manipulation in Lab-On-a-Chip (LOC) systems. Among droplet actuation forces, ElectroWetting on Dielectric (EWOD) and Liquid DiElectroPhoresis (LDEP) are powerful tools, used in many LOC platforms. Such digital microfluidic transductions do not require integration of complex mechanical components such as pumps and valves to perform the fluidic operations. However, although LDEP has been proved to be efficient to carry and manipulate biological components in insulating liquids, this microfluidic transduction requires several hundreds of volts at relatively high frequencies (kHz to MHz). With the purpose to develop integrated microsystems µ-TAS (Micro Total Analysis System) or Point of Care systems, the goal here is to reduce such high actuation voltage, the power consumption, though using standard dielectric materials. This paper gives key rules to determine the best tradeoff between liquid manipulation efficiency, low-power consumption and robustness of microsystems using LDEP actuation. This study leans on an electromechanical model to describe liquid manipulation that is applied to an experimental setup, and provides precise quantification of both actuation voltage Vth and frequency fc thresholds between EWOD and LDEP regimes. In particular, several parameters will be investigated to quantify Vth and fc, such as the influence of the chip materials, the electrodes size and the device configurations. Compared to current studies in the field, significant reduction of both Vth and fc is achieved by optimization of the aforementioned parameters.

Unsupervised clustering of biomarkers derived from noninvasive samples such as nasal fluid is less evaluated as a tool for describing asthma endotypes. We sought to evaluate whether protein expression in nasal fluid would identify distinct clusters of patients with asthma with specific lower airway molecular phenotypes. Unsupervised clustering of 168 nasal inflammatory and immune proteins and Shapley values was used to stratify 43 patients with severe asthma (endotype of noneosinophilic asthma) using a 2 "modeling blocks" machine learning approach. This algorithm was also applied to nasal brushings transcriptomics from U-BIOPRED (Unbiased Biomarkers for the Prediction of Respiratory Diseases Outcomes). Feature reduction and functional gene analysis were used to compare proteomic and transcriptomic clusters. Gene set variation analysis provided enrichment scores of the endotype of noneosinophilic asthma protein signature within U-BIOPRED sputum and blood. The nasal protein machine learning model identified 2 severe asthma endotypes, which were replicated in U-BIOPRED nasal transcriptomics. Cluster 1 patients had significant airway obstruction, small airways disease, air trapping, decreased diffusing capacity, and increased oxidative stress, although only 4 of 18 were current smokers. Shapley identified 20 cluster-defining proteins. Forty-one proteins were significantly higher in cluster 1. Pathways associated with proteomic and transcriptomic clusters were linked to T H 1, T H 2, neutrophil, Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription, TLR, and infection activation. Gene set variation analysis of the nasal protein and gene signatures were enriched in subjects with sputum neutrophilic/mixed granulocytic asthma and in subjects with a molecular phenotype found in sputum neutrophil-high subjects. Through its disease-modifying potential, immunotherapy is the keystone to curing allergic diseases. Allergen immunotherapy, applied for more than a century, is currently supported by novel modalities such as mAb-based therapies or small molecules targeting the key nodes of the allergic inflammation network. In this review, a summary of the most significant advances in immunotherapy is presented, addressing not only novel approaches to stratifying patients but also major controlled clinical trials and real-world evidence that strengthen the role of immunotherapy in the treatment of allergies. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) is a passive and label-free microfluidic separation technique with a strong potential for biological sample preparation purposes. Numerical and experimental models have been proposed so far to predict the particle behavior in DLD channels. However, they do not take into account the influence of the pillar anisotropy that induces a secondary pressure gradient in the direction perpendicular to the main flow. The influence of the pillar geometry on the anisotropy magnitude is presented. We show that anisotropy impacts the trajectory of particles in DLD devices and should be included in predictive models for the critical diameter.

This paper presents the development of a lab-on-chip system based on the use of local vibrations to mechanically stimulate biological materials. It reports on the development and characterization of a piezoelectric actuators driven system designed to operate in liquid media. The microfluidic packaging of the Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) is first presented. Then, electromechanical measurements done to calibrate our system are compared with Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. These results are the first steps for implementation of piezoelectric MEMS to study mechanical response of biological cells at the population level.

This article introduces the German National Study on Early Childhood Education and Care (NUBBEK). NUBBEK offers an empirical basis for the study of care and education within and outside of the family for two- (n = 1242) and four-year old children (n = 714). Data were collected in 2010 and 2011; 27% of all children grew up in either Turkish or Russian immigrant families. NUBBEK adopted a socio-ecological perspective on education and care. Data on orientation, structure, and processes were gathered in a parallel fashion in both home environment and 567 external day care settings. The article provides information on the design of NUBBEK, the sample, the instruments (interviews, questionnaires, observations, tests), as well as on selected intra-class-coefficients (ICC) for potential multilevel-analyses. In fall 2014, the data will be available for the scientific community at the GESIS data archive. Zusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag stellt die Nationale Untersuchung zur Bildung, Betreuung und Erziehung in der frühen Kindheit (NUBBEK) vor. NUBBEK bietet eine empirische Basis zur Erforschung der familiären und außerfamiliären Betreuung von zweijährigen (n = 1242) und vierjährigen (n = 714) Kindern. Die Daten stammen aus den Jahren 2010 bis 2011; 27% der Kinder hatten einen türkischen oder einen russischen Migrationshintergrund. Die NUBBEK-Studie orientierte sich an einer sozialökologischen Konzeption von Bildung und Entwicklung. Orientierungsqualität, Strukturqualität sowie Prozessqualität wurden weitgehend parallel sowohl für das Betreuungssetting Familie erhoben als auch für 567 Krippen-, Kindergarten- und Tagespflegegruppen. Das Design der Studie, die Stichprobe, die eingesetzten Verfahren (Beobachtungen, Interviews, Fragebögen, Testungen der Kinder) sowie ausgewählte Intraklassen-Korrelationskoeffizienten (ICC) für potenzielle Mehrebenanalysen werden vorgestellt. Die Daten sind ab Herbst 2014 im Datenarchiv von GESIS für Forschungseinrichtungen zugänglich.
