51. Optimización de la generación de un parque eólico considerando efectos de estela

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es verificar la hipótesis de que operar los diferentes aerogeneradores de un parque a velocidades específicas distintas de la óptima tiene como resultado un aumento en la velocidad del viento en las estelas y que éste comporta un aumento de la generación eléctrica total del parque. Para ello se hace un repaso de la teoría aerodinámica de aerogeneradores necesaria, se establece un caso de estudio y se simula. A partir de los resultados favorables se establece un sistema de operación que haga uso de este efecto para así mejorar la producción energética del parque en su conjunto.

Abstract

Aquest volum conté la memòria del projecte de fi de carrera "Avaluació in situ i càlcul de càrregues en un aerogenerador‟. Es presenta la implementació d'un software que serveix per realitzar un estudi de vent, però al mateix temps serveix per obtenir els valors necessaris per calcular les accions sobre l'aerogenerador. El document descriu detalladament cada un dels passos per a realitzar la avaluació in situ d‟un aerogenerador i el càlcul de càrregues sobre aquest. S'explica la implementació d‟un software pròpiament desenvolupat amb el programa R-cran i que serveix com a eina de càlcul per a les dades meteorològiques rebudes per la torre de mesura. El programari s'ha dissenyat en funció de les especificacions de la normativa IEC 61400-1 [3], on s'esmenten els paràmetres necessaris per a la realització de l'estudi del recurs eòlic en un emplaçament determinat. A posteriori, s'inclou una breu explicació de les diferents càrregues que es consideren en el disseny d'un aerogenerador d'eix horitzontal. Es calculen les càrregues aerodinàmiques estàtiques sofertes per dita estructura mitjançant un programa de lliure distribució anomenat Qblade. Seguidament, es fa una valoració de l'estudi a nivell d'impacte ambiental i de pressupost. En aquest s'avalua l'estalvi energètic, a nivell d'emissions de CO2, i es fa un petit anàlisi de la rendibilitat econòmica de la instal·lació. Per últim, es plantegen les possibles alternatives o línies d'estudi per millorar i ampliar el mètode de simulació per l'avaluació in situ. Així com també, alternatives per aprofundir en l'anàlisi d‟esforços aerodinàmics sobre l'aerogenerador.

53. Study of the influence of airfoils geometry in the yield of wind turbines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the importance of airfoils geometry in the yield of wind turbines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. It pretends to interpret the most important aerodynamic design features of the rotor, and aerodynamic parameters associated with blades airfoils geometry, related with the improvement of wind turbines efficiency for vertical and horizontal axis generators. Moreover the project pretends to explain basic concepts of wind energy converters of both generators named before, and the physical principles of wind energy conversion. All this study will be proven using some specific cases of airfoil shapes for aircraft wings standardized by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA)1. These different shapes will be simulated through CFD changing the mainly influent variables. The numerical simulation of the flow field around the blades will be conducted with ANSYS® Fluent Software2. Finally, the conclusions obtained by the simulation will be compared with the physical explanation demonstrated before, thus obtaining information about how to optimize the airfoil shape., Outgoing

Abstract

This paper presents a simplified model for the dynamic analysis of a floating off-shore wind turbine (FOWT), which can be suitable for early feasibility and pre-engineering studies, where the complete system has to modeled in order to predict its behavior and to assess the performance. The model solves the equation of motion in time domain and considers Morison equation for computing the hydrodynamic loads. The aerodynamic loads are included by considering the wind thrust at hub height and the loads from the mooring system have been computed as a non-linear model. A methodology is also presented for calculating the structural properties of the system. The model is tested for two load cases and compared to results obtained with the more complex model FAST. The comparison between the response of the models is satisfactory. The simplified model allows to capture the main motions of the FOWT with an acceptable accuracy. A further feature of the model is to calculate the power generation of the floating wind turbine. The results show that the losses in comparison with a bottom-fixed off-shore wind turbine are below 1% or 1.1% according to the load case, which confirms the good performance of the studied FOWT.

Abstract

Decommissioning is a key process in the offshore wind industry because all substructures, bottom fixed or floating, have to be removed and completely dismantled at the end of their service life. There is still no experience of decommissioning a floating wind substructure and only two very small offshore wind farms with bottom fixed platforms have already been decommissioned. Devising save and effective processes to dismantle wind offshore substructures is a challenge that has to be faced in civil engineering in near future.

Abstract

Offshore wind power technologies are still developing. Floating systems represent the future of wind energy as they provide sites with better wind characteristics. Nowadays they are under intensive study and experimentation, with, for example, the large Denmark investment or the FORWARD project in Japan. The aim of this thesis is the verification of an existing numerical model of a small offshore floating wind turbine: PIGAL, a project of Politecnico di Torino. First of all, the existing model is going to be explained. This numerical model concerns the modelling of hydrodynamic, aerodynamic, mechanical and mooring forces. The verification of the model is going to be done comparing it with the adaptation of the model and experimental data of another small floating wind turbine. The validation of the numerical model is important for the development of larger machines. Afterwards, it is going to be considered the optimization of blades to match the wind conditions of the experimentation. Outgoing

The target of this project is to continue the work started in a previous project, studying and optimizing the aerodynamics of flat back airfoils, which are used for wind turbine applications, through numerical simulations. Update the available literature on current flat back airfoils.Continue the optimization of flatback surfaces obtained from conventional sections and develop completely new designs with the objective of obtaining better aerodynamic characteristics than conventional airfoils.

Abstract

In order to accurately model large, advanced and efficient wind turbines, more reliable and realistic aerodynamic simulation tools are needed. In this project a code to compute the aerodynamics of a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine is developed. The formulation is based on Prandtl's lifting line theory and assuming a helical prescribed wake of the rotor. To develop this code, another code to compute the wing aerodynamics based in Prandtl's lifting line is developed. This wing code is also explained and validated in this project. Furthermore, the formulation of the numerical lifting line and its adaptation to compute the wing and rotor aerodynamics is presented. The HAWT code is expected to predict the tangential and normal forces to the rotor plane and the results coming from numerical and experimental comparisons are presented. Finally, further code improvements are suggested
