Abstract

In the arid Arabian Peninsula, particularly within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the perception of rainfall has shifted from a natural blessing to a significant challenge for infrastructure and community resilience. The unprecedented storm on 17 April 2024, exposed critical vulnerabilities in the UAE's urban infrastructure and flood management practices, revealing substantial gaps in handling accumulated precipitation. This study addresses the necessity of updating the Intensity–Duration–Frequency (IDF) curves for the Sharjah Emirate by utilizing recent precipitation data from 2021 to April 2024, alongside previously published 2020 data. By recalibrating the IDF curves based on data from three meteorological stations, this study reveals a substantial increase in rainfall intensities across all durations and return periods. Rainfall intensities increased by an average of 36.76% in Sharjah, 26.52% in Al Dhaid, and 17.55% in Mleiha. These increases indicate a trend towards more severe and frequent rainfall events, emphasizing the urgent need to revise hydrological models and infrastructure designs to enhance flood resilience. Abstract

The unavailability of jobs for graduates has become a gross concern in developing countries such as Nigeria, which is not necessarily contingent on graduates from any specific course of study, including art and design education. It is thus evident that proficiency in artistic or creative talent alone is insufficient to guarantee a thriving art and design career and the need to develop the required entrepreneurial propensity. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the entrepreneurial skills and traits of art and design students in Nigerian higher education institutions (HEIs) as a remedy for stimulating their entrepreneurial tendencies. The hypothesized model of art and design students’ entrepreneurial traits was developed based on the theoretical framework developed from the literature as a three-factor construct (Model 1.0) comprising technical/soft skills, managerial skills, and entrepreneurial skills. Data was obtained using a structured Likert scale questionnaire of 36 items adapted from Yilzman & Sunbul’s entrepreneurial scale from a sample of 186 art and design students. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and the Covariance-based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM) via the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and IBM SPSS Amos 26 Graphics software. The model fit results reveal that the goodness-of-fit statistics indexes fell within the acceptable range. The results of the hypotheses testing of the model show that no significant association exists between art and design students’ technical and entrepreneurial skill traits. However, there is a significant association between their managerial and entrepreneurial skill traits. The outcome of this research has implications for TVET institutions in the arts and design field further to promote the development of students’ inherent entrepreneurial traits to boost their entrepreneurial tendencies.

71. Estimating the burden of selected non-communicable diseases in Africa : a systematic review of the evidence

Abstract

Background The burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is rapidly increasing globally, and particularly in Africa, where the health focus, until recently, has been on infectious diseases. The response to this growing burden of NCDs in Africa has been affected owing to a poor understanding of the burden of NCDs, and the relative lack of data and low level of research on NCDs in the continent. Recent estimates on the burden of NCDs in Africa have been mostly derived from modelling based on data from other countries imputed into African countries, and not usually based on data originating from Africa itself. In instances where few data were available, estimates have been characterized by extrapolation and over-modelling of the scarce data. It is therefore believed that underestimation of NCDs burden in many parts of Africa cannot be unexpected. With a gradual increase in average life expectancy across Africa, the region now experiencing the fastest rate of urbanization globally, and an increase adoption of unhealthy lifestyles, the burden of NCDs is expected to rise. This thesis will, therefore, be focussing on understanding the prevalence, and/or where there are available data, the incidence, of four major NCDs in Africa, which have contributed highly to the burden of NCDs, not only in Africa, but also globally. Methods I conducted a systematic search of the literature on three main databases (Medline, EMBASE and Global Health) for epidemiological studies on NCDs conducted in Africa. I retained and extracted data from original population-based (cohort or cross sectional), and/or health service records (hospital or registry-based studies) on prevalence and/or incidence rates of four major NCDs in Africa. These include: cardiovascular diseases (hypertension and stroke), diabetes, major cancer types (cervical, breast, prostate, ovary, oesophagus, bladder, Kaposi, liver, stomach, colorectal, lung and non-Hodgkin lymphoma), and chronic respiratory diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma). From extracted crude prevalence and incidence rates, a random effect meta-analysis was conducted and reported for each NCD. An epidemiological model was applied on all extracted data points. The fitted curve explaining the largest proportion of variance (best fit) from the model was further applied. The equation generated from the fitted curve was used to determine the prevalence and cases of the specific NCD in Africa at midpoints of the United Nations (UN) population 5-year age-group population estimates for Africa. Results From the literature search, studies on hypertension had the highest publication output at 7680, 92 of which were selected, spreading across 31 African countries. Cancer had 9762 publications and 39 were selected across 20 countries; diabetes had 3701 publications and 48 were selected across 28 countries; stroke had 1227 publications and 19 were selected across 10 countries; asthma had 790 publications and 45 were selected across 24 countries; and COPD had the lowest output with 243 publications and 13 were selected across 8 countries. From studies reporting prevalence rates, hypertension, with a total sample size of 197734, accounted for 130.2 million cases and a prevalence of 25.9% (23.5, 34.0) in Africa in 2010. This is followed by asthma, with a sample size of 187904, accounting for 58.2 million cases and a prevalence of 6.6% (2.4, 7.9); COPD, with a sample size of 24747, accounting for 26.3 million cases and a prevalence of 13.4% (9.4, 22.1); diabetes, with a sample size of 102517, accounting for 24.5 million cases and a prevalence of 4.0% (2.7, 6.4); and stroke, with a sample size of about 6.3 million, accounting for 1.94 million cases and a prevalence of 317.3 per 100000 population (314.0, 748.2). From studies reporting incidence rates, stroke accounted for 496 thousand new cases in Africa in 2010, with a prevalence of 81.3 per 100000 person years (13.2, 94.9). For the 12 cancer types reviewed, a total of 775 thousand new cases were estimated in Africa in 2010 from registry-based data covering a total population of about 33 million. Among women, cervical cancer and breast cancer had 129 thousand and 81 thousand new cases, with incidence rates of 28.2 (22.1, 34.3) and 17.7 (13.0, 22.4) per 100000 person years, respectively. Among men, prostate cancer and Kaposi sarcoma closely follows with 75 thousand and 74 thousand new cases, with incidence rates of 14.5 (10.9, 18.0) and 14.3 (11.9, 16.7) per 100000 person years, respectively. Conclusion This study suggests the prevalence rates of the four major NCDs reviewed (cardiovascular diseases (hypertension and stroke), diabetes, major cancer types, and chronic respiratory diseases (COPD and asthma) in Africa are high relative to global estimates. Due to the lack of data on many NCDs across the continent, there are still doubts on the true prevalence of these diseases relative to the current African population. There is need for improvement in health information system and overall data management, especially at country level in Africa. Governments of African nations, international organizations, experts and other stakeholders need to invest more on NCDs research, particularly mortality, risk factors, and health determinants to have evidenced-based facts on the drivers of this epidemic in the continent, and prompt better, effective and overall public health response to NCDs in Africa.

Abstract

COVID-19 is known to be associated with increased risks of cognitive and psychiatric outcomes after the acute phase of disease. We aimed to assess whether these symptoms can emerge or persist more than 1 year after hospitalisation for COVID-19, to identify which early aspects of COVID-19 illness predict longer-term symptoms, and to establish how these symptoms relate to occupational functioning.

86. The Production of African Print Fabric Designs: A User-Centric Design Approach

Abstract

African print fabric is a major textile item in Africa because of its high economic value. This study focused on the production of African print fabrics that are user-centered. The textile industry in Nigeria is presently in a comatose state and there is a need to develop a design model for producing textile designs that will meet the specific needs of the target consumers. The practice-led and survey research designs were adopted for the study. The study population comprised the users of African print fabrics in Southwest Nigeria. Since the users of the fabrics are infinite, the Cochran formula was used to calculate the sample size for the study. 384 users were sampled using the open-ended questionnaires and opinion sampling for data collection. The data were analyzed using the simple descriptive statistical tools such as frequency and percentage. The study revealed that the African print fabric users across different age groups have specific preferences for African print fabrics. It was therefore recommended that the textile designers focus on producing the user-centered African print fabrics that meet the specific needs of consumers.

Abstract

This is a discourse on approaches to enhancing visual arts and design on the Ibogun campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State. The Fine and Applied Arts (FAA) discipline is created for the production of graduates that will be technologically and creatively strengthened to solve industrial and societal problems. This cannot be attained when an institution is faced with multi-faceted challenges linked primarily to a lack of infrastructure caused by poor funding. The main problem is that the FAA Department at Ibogun Campus lacks digital art labs and standard studios to teach the course. Experiential and humanistic learning theories were chosen as the theoretical frameworks that back up this research work. The study aims to identify trends in visual arts and design within the context of Nigerian education with a view to determining solutions to problems facing Fine and Applied Arts as a course and department. By design, this is a qualitative study; thus, the library research method was employed together with observation and unstructured interviews for data gathering. On this premise, reasonable recommendations were put forward. However, while the study acknowledges the efforts of the university management, it uncovered that infrastructural problems are not only affecting FAA and Ibogun campuses; the Ibogun community as a whole is also feeling the hitch. FAA Department was created almost two decades ago but still lacks a brand name, unlike other Nigerian tertiary institutions with special (name) identities for their art schools. Consequently, the study, among other suggestions, recommended that the FAA Departments Ibogun campus be branded as ‘OOU Ibogun Art School, while government intervention through adequate funding is advised. The department also needs to concentrate more on creative technological innovations since this is the era of artificial intelligence.

88. Coping strategies in mitigating covid-19 pandemic’s effect on farming household income in Osun state, Nigeria

Income of farming households with low socio-economic status is a task in emerging nations, rural parts of Nigeria inclusive. In connection with this, the entrance of Covid-19 pandemic posed a grave risk to the economy of the households. This study, therefore, investigate the coping strategies in mitigating Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on the farming households’ income. Data for the paper were collected from 150 farming household heads, through multistage sampling method, with the use of interview scheduled and analysed using appropriate statistics. The findings showed that many (57.3%) of the respondents were male. The widely practiced coping strategies during the pandemic were rationed spending (=2.63), job diversification (=2.40), reduction in hired labour (=2.36), household food rationing (=2.28) among others. There is substantial relationship between household size (r = 0.075, p = 0.003), annual income (r = 0.033, p = 0.004) and coping strategies practiced at p≤0.005. It was concluded that the pandemic had great effect on the income of the farming household. The study recommends formulation of necessary, effective and urgent policies for assisting and generating fresh employments and revenue producing prospects for affected households.

Abstract

The study aimed at availability of petroleum products in Nigeria through the operation of enhanced modular refinery process due to inefficient conventional major refineries. The enhanced modular refinery converts or processes residue product from conventional modular refinery as feedstock to the hydrocracker reactor for viable and desired products such as liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha and diesel. Therefore, twenty Nigerian crude oil types were classified as sweet, light and medium crude oil, and these crude oil types were categorized based on their recovery volume at true boiling point of 370oC as Group A, Group B and Group C respectively. Thus, based on product output and equipment cost, a modular refinery with 29 trays was used in this study, as light and medium sweet crude oil types were simulated in a modular refinery of various column trays prior to the desired tray. A topping plant with a 30,000 barrel per day capacity and a modified topping plant with 29 trays respectively were used to process different types of Nigerian crude oil. using Aspen Hysys to evaluate their products yield and tray compositions. The modified modular refinery with hydrocracker yielded more valuable from the residue of conventional modular refinery with minimal bottom fraction. Performance models for hydrocracker reactor was developed based on the nature of reaction, kinetic parameters estimated and results compared with experimental data with minimum deviations. The developed performance models predicted feedstock conversion and product yield along the hydrocracker reactor’s dimensionless length by solving a set of ordinary differential equation models. Thus, the hydrocracking process was simulated to evaluate the effects of catalyst effectiveness factor on feedstock conversion and products yield.

98. Simulation of packed bed reactors for naphtha reforming unit

Abstract

The study focused on the performance evaluation of catalytic naphtha reforming unit via a packed bed reactors arranged in series. Three series arranged packed bed naphtha reforming reactors were developed and simulated using Aspen hysys software and steady state performance models of the packed bed naphtha reforming reactor were developed through the application of the principle of conservation of mass and energy to predict both the yields of theses reactors, their dimensions in terms of length, diameter, height, volume and temperature effects or progressions along the reactors’ length respectively. Three main reaction paths were considered in this research study that include the conversion of naphthenes to aromatics, naphthenes to paraffins and hydrocracking of paraffins. The developed performance models yielded first order ordinary differential equations which were solved using Runge-Kutta fourth order ODE45 solver. The packed bed reactor operating conditions of temperature and pressure are between 4800C and 5200C and 2atm respectively with ninety percent (90%) conversion. The simulated reactor performance model for the three reactors yielded 29.7 m3, 40.78 m3 and 52.33 m3 for reactor volume, catalyst bed height of 11m, 12.98 m, 16 m, and reactor’s diameter of 1.85 m, 2 m and 2.04 m respectively.
