Mg/Al hydrotalcite-like materials were prepared with different Mg/Al molar ratios ranging from 1.5:1 to 6:1 and electrochemically characterized before being included into epoxy-graphite to form the electrode matrix. The electrochemical response of the electrodes was evaluated by the use of potassium ferro/ferricyanide redox pair as a probe for voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The electm-catalytic effect on the potassium ferm/ferricyanide redox pair showed was more effective when Mg and Al is 1.5:/1 M proportion due, apparently, to the more positively charged hydrotalcite layers and more affinity for anions such as Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-). This epoxy-graphite-hydrotalcite composite presents the lowest potential difference and lowest loading transfer resistance associated with the hydrotalcite phase, which are desirable properties for potential electroanalytical purposes. The results indicated the potential application of the epoxy-graphite-hydrotalcite electrode for ion exchange of negative-charged chemical species. Molding (Chemical technology) -- Methods ,Engineering and manufacturing industries - Abstract
The production of a part by foundry techniques is influenced by its complex geometry configuration, which affects the solidification conditions and subsequent cooling. For example certain pipes, some vessels and most valves are produced by casting. To model the solidification of the complex shapes such as valves is difficult if Cartesian coordinates are used. Even simpler parts like pipes may become difficult to model because they usually are not orthogonally ruled shapes. The main objective of this paper is to describe the development of a finite volume method intended to simulate the heat transfer phenomena during the phase change process. Because of the mold design complexity, the finite volume is described using the generalized curvilinear formulation. [DOI: 10.1115/1.2218352]

The combined chemical and thermal activation kinetics of vibrationally highly excited n-butylbenzene cations ([C.sub.10][H.sub.14.sup.}), reacting to form two competing channels, are analyzed. The charge transfer has occurred approximately equally through resonant transfer and complex-forming transfer and the thermal dissociation experiments have provided a high precision value of the energy barrier for the channel 92, being 1.14 ((plusmn)0.02) eV.

Square-wave anodic voltammetry (SWV) was used to determine lapachol using a laboratory-made graphite-epoxy electrode. The electrolytic medium consisted of an aqueous solution containing cationic surfactant CTAB (1.2 × 10− 4 mol L− 1), buffer phosphate (4.0 × 10− 2 mol L− 1; pH 6.0) and KNO3 (1.0 mol L− 1). The cationic surfactant improved diffusion and interaction of the analyte with the electrode, producing a reversible process that improved the total current measured by SWV. Lapachol signal was measured at − 470 mV after pre-concentration at 400 mV during 140 s, using frequency of 30 Hz, pulse amplitude of 40 mV with step potential of 20 mV. The instrumental limit of detection was 0.029 mg L− 1 and the dynamic linear range covered two decades. In the presence of β-lapachone (structural isomer) selectivity was achieved by first order derivative of the SWV signal. Lapachol determination in ethanolic extract of heartwood of Tabebuia impetiginosa was accomplished after a simple thin-layer chromatographic separation of the analyte from components of the complex sample. The results agreed (at 95% confidence level) with the ones achieved by using high performance liquid chromatography with absorciometric detection.

The aim of the study is to demonstrate that the biotinylated 19 base oligonucleotide probe of the gag gene H1Gag1584 can be used as a molecular recognition element for the detection of HIV-1 proviral DNA, in two electrochemical detection systems of free laber. Two free leber electrochemical detection systems were evaluated: an impedimetric DNA genosensor using a self-assembled biotin monolayer (SAM) and a voltammetric DNA genosensor by modifying a new epoxy graphite transducer with graphene oxide. The results obtained in this study showed that the biotinylated 19-base oligonucleotide probe of the gag gene H1Gag1584 can be used as a molecular recognition element for the detection of HIV-1 proviral DNA, in two electrochemical detection systems of free labels. A new graphite epoxy composite composition was developed by the manufacturer of transducer for DNA biosensor, which were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy field emission (FESEM). The dependence of peak potential, the anode current relationship, and cathodic current with scan rate was evaluated by voltammetry for the redox system Fe(CN)63-/4- Well-defined voltammograms were obtained using the graphite-epoxy composite 3.3/2.5/1 m/m/v graphite/araldite/hardener (GEC II). The electrochemical characterization showed a quasi-reversible electrochemical behavior under the control of the linear diffusion system for Fe(CN)63-/4-. The GEC III was also successfully used in the detection of the signal oxidation guanine monophosphate (GMF) and adenine (AMF) by square wave voltammetry. These results demonstrate the potential of GEC II in the electrochemical detection of DNA.

The aim of this research was to numerically clarify the effect of finger spreading and thumb abduction on the hydrodynamic force generated by the hand and forearm during swimming. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of a realistic hand and forearm model obtained using a computer tomography scanner was conducted. A mean flow speed of 2 m·s
-1 was used to analyze the possible combinations of three finger positions (grouped, partially spread, totally spread), three thumb positions (adducted, partially abducted, totally abducted), three angles of attack (a = 0°, 45°, 90°), and four sweepback angles (y = 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°) to yield a total of 108 simulated situations. The values of the drag coefficient were observed to increase with the angle of attack for all sweepback angles and finger and thumb positions. For y = 0° and 180°, the model with the thumb adducted and with the little finger spread presented higher drag coefficient values for a = 45° and 90°. Lift coefficient values were observed to be very low at a = 0° and 90° for all of the sweepback angles and finger and thumb positions studied, although very similar values are obtained at a = 45°. For y = 0° and 180°, the effect of finger and thumb positions appears to be much most distinct, indicating that having the thumb slightly abducted and the fingers grouped is a preferable position at y = 180°, whereas at y = 0°, having the thumb adducted and fingers slightly spread yielded higher lift values. Results show that finger and thumb positioning in swimming is a determinant of the propulsive force produced during swimming; indeed, this force is dependent on the direction of the flow over the hand and forearm, which changes across the arm’s stroke. This study was designed to evaluate morphological differences between cultured and wild African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell). Fish samples were collected from the lower Benue River (axis in Makurdi), while cultured fish were obtained from the University of Agriculture Makurdi research farm. The results revealed significant sex-related variation in the fish from different environments. Significant differences were observed in all morphometric parameters measured and in three of the five meristic counts recorded. Discriminant analysis and cluster analysis of morphometric parameters showed a high divergence among the populations, hence the tested fish samples were grouped into respective environments by sex. The meristic count, however, overlapped broadly showing no divergence among the populations. The morphometric differences between the cultured and wild African catfish could have been linked to genetic differences or environmental factors or a combination of both factors.

- Abstract
The aim of the article is to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of a swimmer's scanned hand model for various possible combinations of both the angle of attack and the sweepback angle, simulating separate underwater arm stroke phases of front crawl swimming. An actual swimmer's hand with thumb adducted was scanned using an Artec L 3D scanner. ANSYS Fluent code was applied for carrying out steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The hand model was positioned in nine different positions corresponding to the swimmer's hand orientations (angle of attack and sweepback angle) and velocities observed during the underwater hand stroke of front crawl. Hydrodynamic forces and coefficients were calculated. Results showed significantly higher drag coefficient values in the pull phase, when compared with previous studies under a steady-state flow condition. The mean value of the ratio of drag and lift coefficients was 2.67 ± 2.3 in underwater phases. The mean value of the ratio of drag and lift forces was 2.73 ± 2.4 in underwater phases. Moreover, hydrodynamic coefficients were not almost constant throughout different flow velocities, and variation was observed for different hand positions corresponding to different stroke phases. The current study suggests that the realistic variation of both the orientation angles influenced higher values of drag, lift and resultant coefficients and forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Reducing the burden of CVD particularly among rural dwellers will require a wholistic approach involving health education, and strengthening of primary health care to provide affordable primary care to the people. Aim: To access the knowledge of CVD and its risk factors among the people. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 360 adult residents of Igueben, a rural community in Edo State South-South Nigeria, selected through a multistage sampling technique. An interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data which were analysed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: Respondents were mostly female (67.78%) with a mean age of 45 ± 08 years. Over half of the respondents were farmers (58.33%), and 57.78% of respondents did not have secondary education. Over 50% had knowledge of stroke, and more than two-third of them were able to recognise common stroke symptoms such as difficulty speaking, facial weakness, and sudden limb weakness. Most respondents had knowledge of common risk factors for CVD, especially smoking, alcohol use, and hypertension. Respondents demonstrated a good knowledge of the preventive and control measures of CVD like healthy diet (60.56%), regular exercise (60.56%), alcohol and smoking cessation (60.56%), good sleep (55.56%), good health-seeking behaviour (55.55%), and avoidance of stress (54.44%). Furthermore, 78.89% of the participants recognised the need for hospital care in the event of a CVD. However, one-third of them had a poor health-seeking behaviour. Conclusion: We have found that this rural population had knowledge of stroke as a CVD as well as other common ones such as heart attack and heart failure. They also had a good health-seeking behaviour. However, while CVD awareness alone is no guarantee for positive cardiovascular outcomes, a good knowledge is clearly necessary for individuals to make informed decisions about their health by potentially adopting risk-free behaviours.

Income levelling is analyzed in terms of its effect on supply decisions in a prototypic Hungarian firm during the New Economic Mechanism (NEM) period. The analysis uses a modified profit function in an inventory model and an equation featuring a constant term to determine if an imposed constraint is mandatory. The results show that levelling lessens supply in successful industries which make intermediate goods. A shortage in such products results in a shortage in final goods.

- Abstract
The aim of the current study was to analyze the hydrodynamics of three kayaks: 97-kg-class, single-rower, flatwater sports competition, full-scale design evolution models (Nelo K1 Vanquish LI, LII, and LIII) of M.A.R. Kayaks Lda., Portugal, which are among the fastest frontline kayaks. The effect of kayak design transformation on kayak hydrodynamics performance was studied by the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The steady-state CFD simulations where performed by application of the k-omega turbulent model and the volume-of-fluid method to obtain two-phase flow around the kayaks. The numerical result of viscous, pressure drag, and coefficients along with wave drag at individual average race velocities was obtained. At an average velocity of 4.5 m/s, the reduction in drag was 29.4% for the design change from LI to LII and 15.4% for the change from LII to LIII, thus demonstrating and reaffirming a progressive evolution in design. In addition, the knowledge of drag hydrodynamics presented in the current study facilitates the estimation of the paddling effort required from the athlete during progression at different race velocities. This study finds an application during selection and training, where a coach can select the kayak with better hydrodynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The distribution of pressure coefficient formed when the fluid contacts with the kayak oar blade is not been studied extensively. The CFD technique was employed to calculate pressure coefficient distribution on the front and rear faces of oar blade resulting from the numerical resolution equations of the flow around the oar blade in the steady flow conditions (4 m/s) for three angular orientations of the oar (45°, 90°, 135°) with main flow. A three-dimensional (3D) geometric model of oar blade was modeled and the kappa-epsilon turbulence model was applied to compute the flow around the oar. The main results reported that, under steady state flow conditions, the drag coefficient (Cd = 2.01 for 4 m/s) at 90° orientation has the similar evolution for the different oar blade orientation to the direction of the flow. This is valid when the orientation of the blade is perpendicular to the direction of the flow. Results indicated that the angle of oar strongly influenced the Cd with maximum values for 90° angle of the oar. Moreover, the distribution of the pressure is different for the internal and external edges depending upon oar angle. Finally, the difference of negative pressure coefficient Cp in the rear side and the positive Cp in the front side, contributes toward propulsive force. The results indicate that CFD can be considered an interesting new approach for pressure coefficient calculation on kayak oar blade. The CFD approach could be a useful tool to evaluate the effects of different blade designs on the oar forces and consequently on the boat propulsion contributing toward the design improvement in future oar models. The dependence of variation of pressure coefficient on the angular position of oar with respect to flow direction gives valuable dynamic information, which can be used during training for kayak competition. Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Zeff (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H98,y2 close to 1 and βN ∼ 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of a realistic model of an elite swimmer hand/forearm using three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics techniques. A three-dimensional domain was designed to simulate the fluid flow around a swimmer hand and forearm model in different orientations (0°, 45°, and 90° for the three axes Ox, Oy and Oz). The hand/forearm model was obtained through computerized tomography scans. Steady-state analyses were performed using the commercial code Fluent. The drag coefficient presented higher values than the lift coefficient for all model orientations. The drag coefficient of the hand/forearm model increased with the angle of attack, with the maximum value of the force coefficient corresponding to an angle of attack of 90°. The drag coefficient obtained the highest value at an orientation of the hand plane in which the model was directly perpendicular to the direction of the flow. An important contribution of the lift coefficient was observed at an angle of attack of 45°, which could have an important role in the overall propulsive force production of the hand and forearm in swimming phases, when the angle of attack is near 45°. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of finger spread on the propulsive force production in swimming using computational fluid dynamics. Computer tomography scans of an Olympic swimmer hand were conducted. This procedure involved three models of the hand with differing finger spreads: fingers closed together (no spread), fingers with a small (0.32 cm) spread, and fingers with large (0.64 cm) spread. Steady-state computational fluid dynamics analyses were performed using the Fluent code. The measured forces on the hand models were decomposed into drag and lift coefficients. For hand models, angles of attack of 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°, with a sweep back angle of 0°, were used for the calculations. The results showed that the model with a small spread between fingers presented higher values of drag coefficient than did the models with fingers closed and fingers with a large spread. One can note that the drag coefficient presented the highest values for an attack angle of 90° in the three hand models. The lift coefficient resembled a sinusoidal curve across the attack angle. The values for the lift coefficient presented few differences among the three models, for a given attack angle. These results suggested that fingers slightly spread could allow the hand to create more propulsive force during swimming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study used a computational fluid dynamics methodology to analyze the effect of body position on the drag coefficient during submerged gliding in swimming. The k-epsilon turbulent model implemented in the commercial code Fluent and applied to the flow around a three-dimensional model of a male adult swimmer was used. Two common gliding positions were investigated: a ventral position with the arms extended at the front, and a ventral position with the arms placed along side the trunk. The simulations were applied to flow velocities of between 1.6 and 2.0 m·s
-1 , which are typical of elite swimmers when gliding underwater at the start and in the turns. The gliding position with the arms extended at the front produced lower drag coefficients than with the arms placed along the trunk. We therefore recommend that swimmers adopt the arms in front position rather than the arms beside the trunk position during the underwater gliding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The kinetics of the reaction of N
3 + with O2 has been studied from 120 to 1400 K using both a selected ion flow tube and high-temperature flowing afterglow. The rate constant decreases from 120 K to ∼1200 K and then increases slightly up to the maximum temperature studied, 1400 K. The rate constant compares well to most of the previous measurements in the overlapping temperature range. Comparing the results to drift tube data shows that there is not a large difference between increasing the translational energy available for reaction and increasing the internal energy of the reactants over much of the range, i.e., all types of energies drive the reactivity equally. The reaction produces both NO+ and NO2 + , the latter of which is shown to be the higher energy NOO+ linear isomer. The ratio of NOO+ to NO+ decreases from a value of over 2 at 120 K to less than 0.01 at 1400 K because of dissociation of NOO+ at the higher temperatures. This ratio decreases exponentially with increasing temperature. High-level theoretical calculations have also been performed to compliment the data. Calculations using multi-reference configuration interaction theory at the MRCISD(Q)/cc-pVTZ level of theory show that singlet NOO+ is linear and is 4.5 eV higher in energy than ONO+ . A barrier of 0.9 eV prevents dissociation into NO+ and O(1 D); however, a crossing to a triplet surface connects to NO+ and O(3 P) products. A singlet and a triplet potential energy surface leading to products have been determined using coupled cluster theory at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ level on structures optimized at the Becke3-Lee, Yang, and Parr (B3LYP)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The experimental results and reaction mechanism are evaluated using these surfaces. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

E-mail: isisabel@ufpa.br This study presents the standardization of an artificial feeding technique using capillaries and discusses its effects on biological parameters of partially engorged Amblyomma sculptum females. Partially engorged females were sorted for mean baseline weight (71.94 mg, group I; 167.58 mg, group II). Females were detached from rabbits after 7 days of feeding and then exposed to capillary tubes containing citrated bovine blood for 6, 12, and 24 h. Biological parameters were analyzed for each weight group, after each period. All ticks fed on this system took blood meal. Weights before and after artificial feeding were compared, and significant difference was observed. Mean weight gain for group I females artificially fed for 6, 12, and 24 h was 56.05, 86.75 and 192.89 mg, respectively. Weight gain in group II females fed for 6, 12 and 24 h was 133.73, 182.09 and 368.77 mg. Results indicate that capillary feeding may be used routinely in studies on pathogen transmission by A. sculptum females.
