A spectroscopic study of the proton-rich, particle unstable nucleus 11N has been performed using the multi-nucleon transfer reaction 12C(14N,15C)11N at 30 AMeV incident energy at GANIL. Levels of 11N are observed as well defined resonances in the spectrum of the 15C-ejectiles. They are localized at 2.18(5), 3.63(5), 4.39(5), 5.12(8) and 5.87(15) MeV above the 10C+p threshold. The comparison of the measured widths with R-matrix calculations allows the estimation of spins and parities for these resonances.

The PHELIX facility is available to users since 2008. Nanosecond pulses up to 500 J are utilized at present for experiments combining the heavy ions accelerated at the GSI LINAC facility, while sub-picosecond 200-TW pulses are used in laser stand-alone experiments. A review of the laser performance and future developments is shown.

Collimated jets of beryllium, carbon, oxygen, fluorine, and palladium ions with >1MeV∕nucleon energies are observed from the rear surface of thin foils irradiated with laser intensities of up to 5×1019W∕cm2. The normally dominant proton acceleration is suppressed when the target is subjected to Joule heating to remove hydrogen-bearing contaminant. This inhibits screening effects and permits effective energy transfer to and acceleration of heavier ion species. The influence of remnant protons on the spectral shape of the next highest charge-to-mass ratio species is shown. Particle-in-cell simulations confirming the experimental findings are presented.

We present the results of a study on the acceleration of intense ion beams from solid targets irradiated with laser intensities up to 5×1019W/cm2. A strong dependence of the ion beam parameters on the conditions on the target conditions and laser parameter was found. The ion beam characteristic revealed a highly laminar acceleration and an excellent beam quality superior to that from conventional accelerators. We succeeded in shaping the ion beam by the appropriate tailoring of the target geometry and we performed a characterization of the ion beam quality. The production of a heavy ion beam could be achieved by suppressing the amount of protons at the target surfaces. Finally, we demonstrated the use of short pulse laser driven ion beams for radiography of thick samples with high resolution.

The equation of state for cold nuclear matter is determined by the effective, density-dependent interaction between bound nucleons at temperatureT = 0. This interaction can be probed in elastic nucleus-nucleus collisions at various density overlaps which may extend to several times the normal matter density. For this purpose the elastic scattering of16O ions on16O has been measured at incident energies from 250 to 1120 MeV with high accuracy. From these data, which sample both diffractive and refractive scattering processes, we extract the underlying scattering potentials utilizing model-unrestricted analysis methods. These potentials fit very well into the systematics found in light-ion scattering and compare very favorably with microscopic calculations, if these are based on a weak density dependence of the effective NN interaction, resulting in a soft equation of state for cold nuclear matter.
