- Abstract
Abstract:This essay analyses the pitfalls of auction catalogs’ descriptions of fragments and cuttings. Through an in-depth examination of a cutting sold through Sotheby’s in 2009, the author deconstructs the way in which such fragments are attributed to well-known scribes or illuminators. The cutting was initially ascribed to the so-called Murano Master, but an investigation of the style and artistic features of the fragment challenges this assumption. The essay critically assesses the illumination of the Sotheby’s cutting to contextualize the role of the artist attribution, artistic quality, and provenance of fragments in auction catalogs.

- Abstract
A new generation magnetic spectrometer in space will open the opportunity to inves-tigate the frontiers in direct high-energy cosmic ray measurements and to precisely measure the amount of the rare antimatter component in cosmic rays beyond the reach of current missions. We propose the concept for an Antimatter Large Acceptance Detector In Orbit (ALADInO), designed to take over the legacy of direct measurements of cosmic rays in space performed by PAMELA and AMS-02. ALADInO features technological solutions conceived to overcome the current limi-tations of magnetic spectrometers in space with a layout that provides an acceptance larger than 10 m2 sr. A superconducting magnet coupled to precision tracking and time-of-flight systems can provide the required matter–antimatter separation capabilities and rigidity measurement resolution with a Maximum Detectable Rigidity better than 20 TV. The inner 3D-imaging deep calorimeter, designed to maximize the isotropic acceptance of particles, allows for the measurement of cosmic rays up to PeV energies with accurate energy resolution to precisely measure features in the cosmic ray spectra. The operations of ALADInO in the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrangian point for at least 5 years would enable unique revolutionary observations with groundbreaking discovery poten-tials in the field of astroparticle physics by precision measurements of electrons, positrons, and antiprotons up to 10 TeV and of nuclear cosmic rays up to PeV energies, and by the possible unam-biguous detection and measurement of low-energy antideuteron and antihelium components in cosmic rays., QC 20230227

- Abstract
Individuated font selection, which can increase text reading speed, may be able to increase mathematical expression reading speed and influence reasoning accuracy. To investigate whether the same font that increases a participant’s reading speed enhances mathematical reading, we compared their speed in evaluating mathematical expressions as true or false presented in their fastest reading font as determined by empirical test and with a control font, Times Roman. Participants were faster in completing mathematical problems when using typography selected for individual readability, but no difference occurred in task accuracy, matching patterns previously seen in interlude reading. Future research should assess the impact of elements of time pressure, math complexity, numeric versus text-based questions, and associated math anxiety.

Bent silicon crystals mounted on high-accuracy angular actuators were installed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extensively tested to assess the feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in circular hadron colliders. The adopted layout was exploited and regularly upgraded for about a decade by the UA9 Collaboration. The investigations provided the compelling evidence of a strong reduction of beam losses induced by nuclear inelastic interactions in the aligned crystals in comparison with amorphous orientation. A conceptually similar device, installed in the betatron cleaning insertion of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), was operated through the complete acceleration and storage cycle and demonstrated a large reduction of the background leaking from the collimation region and radiated into the cold sections of the accelerator and the experimental detectors. The implemented layout and the relevant results of the beam tests performed in the SPS and in the LHC with stored proton and ion beams are extensively discussed.

- Abstract
• Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer and leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, including Italy. Adherence to recommendations from scientific societies (such as ASCO, ESMO, AIOM) varies across different cancer centers, potentially resulting in unequal management and escalating costs. • AIGOM coordinated a consensus on early breast cancer using the Estimate-Talk-Estimate method and involving a multiprofessional, multidisciplinary panel of 54 experts: 85.1% expressed their degree of consensus on 38 statements. • The panel underscores the need for a risk-adapted surveillance strategy to enable early detection of recurrent breast cancer in high-risk patients, while considering de-intensification of follow-up in Iow-risk patients. • ln patients with advanced age, co-morbidities, Iow risk, the general practitioners should assume full responsibility for the patient's follow-up. • The panel emphasizes cardiologic, osteometabolic, gynecologic surveillance, psycho-oncologic support psychosocial and rehabilitation programs as part of the follow up, encouraging also a protective lifestyle. Breast cancer stands as the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the primary cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide, including Italy. With the increasing number of survivors, many are enrolled in regular follow-up programs. However, adherence to recommendations from scientific societies (such as ASCO, ESMO, AIOM) for breast cancer follow-up management varies in daily clinical practice across different cancer centers, potentially resulting in unequal management and escalating costs. To address these concerns, the Italian Association of Multidisciplinary Oncology Groups (AIGOM) orchestrated a Consensus on early Breast Cancer follow-up utilizing the Estimate-Talk-Estimate methodology. Following the identification of 18 Items and 38 statements by a select Board, 46 out of 54 (85.1%) experts comprising a multidisciplinary and multiprofessional panel expressed their degree of consensus (Expert Panel). The Expert Panel underscores the potential for the multidisciplinary team to tailor follow-up intensity based on the individual risk of recurrence. In selected cases, the general practitioner may be recommended as the clinical lead for breast cancer follow-up, both after completion of adjuvant treatment and at early initiation of endocrine therapy in low-risk patients. Throughout follow-up, and alongside oncologic surveillance, the expert panel advises osteometabolic, cardiologic, and gynecologic surveillance for the early detection and management of early and late treatment toxicities. Moreover, preserving quality of life is emphasized, with provisions for psycho-oncologic support and encouragement to adopt protective lifestyle behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astrophysics - Abstract
The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.

78. Cardiac wasting in head and neck cancer and in cardiac autopsies from different cancer types: A study in a chemo‐naïve setting

- Abstract
Cardiac wasting is a detrimental consequence of cancer that has been traditionally ignored and often misinterpreted as an iatrogenic effect. We conducted a retrospective study on 42 chemo‐naive patients affected by locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC). Based on unintentional weight loss, patients were divided into cachectic and non‐cachectic. Left ventricular mass (LVM), LV wall thickness (LVWT), interventricular septal (IVS) thickness, left ventricular internal diameter diastolic (LVIDd), left ventricular internal diameter systolic (LVIDs), internal ventricular septum diastolic (IVSd), left ventricular posterior wall thickness diastolic (LVPWd) and LV ejection fraction (LVEF) were analysed by echocardiography. In parallel, we retrospectively analysed 28 cardiac autoptic specimens of patients who either died of cancer before chemotherapy or with a diagnosis of cancer at autopsy. Presence or absence of myocardial fibrosis at microscopic observation was used for sample stratification. Conventional histology was performed. Cachectic and non‐cachectic patients had a significantly different value of LVWT and IVS thickness and LVPWd. LVWT was 9.08 ± 1.57 versus 10.35 ± 1.41 mm (P= 0.011) in cachectic and non‐cachectic patients, IVS was 10.00 mm (8.50–11.00) versus 11.00 mm (10.00–12.00) (P= 0.035), and LVPWd was 9.0 (8.5–10.0) and 10.00 mm (9.5–11.0) (P= 0.019) in cachectic and non‐cachectic patients. LVM adjusted for body surface area or height squared did not differ between the two populations. Similarly, LVEF did not show any significant decline. At multivariate logistic regression analysis for some independent predictors of weight loss, only LVWT maintained significant difference between cachectic and non‐cachectic patients (P= 0.035, OR = 0.240; P= 0.019). The secondary analysis on autoptic specimens showed no significant change in heart weight, whereas LVWT declined from 9.50 (7.25–11.00) to 7.50 mm (6.00–9.00) in cardiac specimens with myocardial fibrosis (P= 0.043). These data were confirmed in multivariate logistic regression analysis (P= 0.041, OR = 0.502). Histopathological analysis confirmed severe atrophy of cardiomyocytes, fibrosis and oedema as compared with controls. Subtle changes in heart structure and function occur early in HNC patients. These can be detected with routine echocardiography and may help to select appropriate cancer treatment regimens for these patients. Histopathological analysis provided conclusive evidence that atrophy of cardiomyocytes, oedema and fibrosis occur during cancer progression and may precede the onset of overt cardiac pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first clinical study that establishes a direct relationship between tumour progression and cardiac remodelling in HNCs and the first pathological study conducted on human cardiac autopsies from selected chemo‐naïve cancer patients.

Detection of low levels of light is one of the key aspects in medical and space applications. Silicon photomultiplier, a novel type of avalanche photodetector which operates in Geiger mode, shows promising results and offer superior design options. The performance characteristics of the SiPM realized in FBK-irst are studied and presented in this paper. The leakage current, dark rate and internal gain are characterized as a function of temperature. The investigation has been carried out in the framework of the DASiPM Collaboration and the INFN/FBK-irst MEMS project. Index Terms--Photodiode, silicon photomultiplier, thermal characteristics.

- Abstract
The AMS-02 detector is a large acceptance magnetic spectrometer operating on the International Space Station since May 2011. More than 60 billion events have been collected by the instrument as of today. One of the key subdetectors of AMS-02 is the microstrip silicon Tracker, designed to precisely measure the trajectory and absolute charge of cosmic rays in the GeV-TeV energy range. In addition, with the magnetic field, is also measuring the particle magnetic rigidity, defined as R = pc=Ze, and the sign of the charge. This report presents the Tracker on-line operations and calibration during the first four years of data taking in space. The track reconstruction efficiency and the resolution will be also reviewed.

- Abstract
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is an astroparticle physics detector that has been installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in May 2011. The purpose of the experiment is to study with unprecedented precision and statistics cosmic-ray particles in an energy range from 0.5 GeV to few TeV. The AMS-02 Tracker system accurately determines the trajectory and absolute charge (Z) of cosmic rays by multiple measurements of the coordinates in nine layers of double-sided silicon micro-strip detectors. Given the high dynamic range of the front-end electronics, nuclei from hydrogen up to iron and above can be identified. The charge resolution could be naturally degraded by a number of detector effects that need to be carefully accounted for. In this contribution we describe the procedure that has been used to accurately calibrate the Tracker response. Finally we will discuss the Tracker calibration stability with time.
