Aerosols affect the Earth's energy budget directly by scattering and absorbing radiation and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei and, thereby, affecting cloud properties. However, large uncertainties exist in current estimates of aerosol forcing because of incomplete knowledge concerning the distribution and the physical and chemical properties of aerosols as well as aerosol-cloud interactions. In recent years, a great deal of effort has gone into improving measurements and datasets. It is thus feasible to shift the estimates of aerosol forcing from largely model-based to increasingly measurement-based. Our goal is to assess current observational capabilities and identify uncertainties in the aerosol direct forcing through comparisons of different methods with independent sources of uncertainties. Here we assess the aerosol optical depth (tau;), direct radiative effect (DRE) by natural and anthropogenic aerosols, and direct climate forcing (DCF) by anthropogenic aerosols, focusing on satellite and ground-based measurements supplemented by global chemical transport model (CTM) simulations. The multi-spectral MODIS measures global distributions of aerosol optical depth (τ) on a daily scale, with a high accuracy of ±0.03±0.05τ over ocean. The annual average τ is about 0.14 over global ocean, of which about 21%±7% is contributed by human activities, as estimated by MODIS fine-mode fraction. The multiangle MISR derives an annual average AOD of 0.23 over global land with an uncertainty of ∼20% or ±0.05. These high-accuracy aerosol products and broadband flux measurements from CERES make it feasible to obtain observational constraints for the aerosol direct effect, especially over global the ocean. A number of measurement-based approaches estimate the clear-sky DRE (on solar radiation) at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) to be about -5.5±0.2Wm-2 (median ± standard error from various methods) over the global ocean. Accounting for thin cirrus contamination of the satellite derived aerosol field will reduce the TOA DRE to -5.0Wm-2. Because of a lack of measurements of aerosol absorption and difficulty in characterizing land surface reflection, estimates of DRE over land and at the ocean surface are currently realized through a combination of satellite retrievals, surface measurements, and model simulations, and are less constrained. Over the oceans the surface DRE is estimated to be -8.8±0.7Wm-2. Over land, an integration of satellite retrievals and model simulations derives a DRE of -4.9±0.7Wm-2 and -11.8±1.9Wm-2 at the TOA and surface, respectively. CTM simulations derive a wide range of DRE estimates that on average are smaller than the measurement-based DRE by about 30-40%, even after accounting for thin cirrus and cloud contamination. A number of issues remain. Current estimates of the aerosol direct effect over land are poorly constrained. Uncertainties of DRE estimates are also larger on regional scales than on a global scale and large discrepancies exist between different approaches. The characterization of aerosol absorption and vertical distribution remains challenging. The aerosol direct effect in the thermal infrared range and in cloudy conditions remains relatively unexplored and quite uncertain, because of a lack of global systematic aerosol vertical profile measurements. A coordinated research strategy needs to be developed for integration and assimilation of satellite measurements into models to constrain model simulations. Thirty mouse monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) raised against human sperm detect common antigenic determinants on human lymphocytes, erythrocytes, bacteria and endotoxin. Specific chemical, enzymatic and lectin blocking studies indicate that the sperm-associated antigens defined by these MoAbs are glycoconjugates. Further studies including reactivity of these MoAbs with organic sperm extracts indicate that the predominant carriers of these carbohydrate antigens are glycolipids and that the terminal immunodominant monosaccharide may be N-acetyl-glucosamine or N-acetylgalactosamine. This article describes the structure of academic discussions during the implementation of a literacy curriculum in the upper elementary grades. The authors examine the quality of academic discussion, using existing discourse analysis frameworks designed to evaluate varying attributes of classroom discourse. To integrate the overlapping qualities of these models with researchers’ descriptions of effective discussion into a single instrument, the authors propose a matrix that (1) moves from a present/absent analytic tendency to a continuum-based model and (2) captures both social and cognitive facets of quality academic discourse. The authors conclude with a discussion of how this matrix could serve to align teachers’ and researchers’ identification of quality academic discussion and the process by which users could measure improvement in students’ discourse skills over time.

Aim: To describe the imaging features of fasciitis ossificans and its histopathological features., Materials and Methods: Using a word search of existing pathology reports at the Mayo Clinic, six cases of fasciitis ossificans were identified. The clinical history, histology, and available imaging of the affected area were reviewed., Results: Imaging consisted of radiographs, mammograms, ultrasound images, bone scintigraphs, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. All cases demonstrated a soft-tissue mass. The characteristic MRI appearance was a T2 hyperintense enhancing mass with surrounding soft-tissue oedema. Peripheral calcifications were seen on radiographs, CT, and/or ultrasound. Histological sections showed distinct zonation, with nodular fasciitis-like zones of myofibroblastic proliferation, which merged with osteoblasts that rim the ill-defined trabeculae of woven bone and became continuous with the mature lamellar bone surrounded by a thin layer of compressed fibrous tissue., Conclusion: Imaging features of fasciitis ossificans are that of an enhancing soft-tissue mass located within a fascial plane with prominent surrounding oedema and mature peripheral calcification. Imaging and histology are that of myositis ossificans but occurring within the fascia. It is important that radiologists are aware of the diagnosis of fasciitis ossificans and appreciate its similarity to myositis ossificans. This is particularly important in anatomical locations with fascias but no muscle. Given the radiographic and histological overlap between these entities, nomenclature that encompasses both could be considered in the future., (Copyright © 2023. Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

A method to establish two experimental corky ringspot disease (CRS) plots that had no prior CRS history is described. CRS is a serious disease of potato in the Pacific Northwest caused by tobacco rattle virus (TRV) and transmitted primarily by Paratrichodorus allius. 'Samsun NN' tobacco seedlings were inoculated with viruliferous P. allius in the greenhouse before they were transplanted into the field soil at the rate of 3,000 plus seedlings/ha. Care was taken to keep soil around plants in the greenhouse and transplants in the field moist to avoid vector mortality. The vector population in the soil of one of the fields was monitored by extraction, examination under microscope and bioassay on tobacco seedlings to ascertain that they were virus carriers. Presence of virus in tobacco bioassay plants was determined by visual symptoms on tobacco leaves and by testing leaves and roots using ELISA. Although TRV transmission was rapid, there was loss of infectivity in the first winter which necessitated a re-inoculation. After two years of planting infected tobacco seedlings, 100% of soil samples collected from this field contained viruliferous P. allius. In the second field, all five commercial potato cultivars, known to be susceptible, expressed symptoms of CRS disease indicating that the procedure was successful.

Laser radar (lidar) can be used to estimate atmospheric extinction coefficients that are due to aerosols if the ratio between optical extinction and 180 degrees backscatter (the lidar ratio) at the laser wavelength is known or if Raman or high spectral resolution data are available. Most lidar instruments, however, do not have Raman or high spectral resolution capability, which makes knowledge of the lidar ratio essential. We have modified an integrating nephelometer, which measures the scattering component of light extinction, by addition of a backward-pointing laser light source such that the detected light corresponds to integrated scattering over 176-178 degrees at a common lidar wavelength of 532 nm. Mie calculations indicate that the detected quantity is an excellent proxy for 180 degrees backscatter. When combined with existing techniques for measuring total scattering and absorption by particles, the new device permits a direct determination of the lidar ratio. A four-point calibration, run by filling the enclosed sample volume with particle-free gases of a known scattering coefficient, indicates a linear response and calibration reproducibility to within 4%. The instrument has a detection limit of 1.5 x 10(-7) m(-1) sr(-1) (approximately 10% of Rayleigh scattering by air at STP) for a 5-min average and is suitable for ground and mobile/airborne surveys. Initial field measurements yielded a lidar ratio of approximately 20 for marine aerosols and approximately 60-70 for continental aerosols, with an uncertainty of approximately 20%.

This study examines the predictors of inconsistent responses from adolescents to questions about whether they ever used alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. Male adolescents had significantly higher rates of inconsistent responses than female adolescents. Black and Hispanic adolescents had significantly higher rates of inconsistent responses regarding ever using alcohol and cigarettes (only for Black) than White adolescents. The subjects' living status and academic achievements were significant predictors of inconsistent responses regarding ever using marijuana. Thus, these results are consistent with the notion that inconsistent responses may bias the estimation of the prevalence of ever using drugs in multivariate analyses.

Throughout the 20th century, scholars studying drug misuse have pinpointed various macrolevel (broad cultural and social structural) influences on the problem. The drug identity change model includes two such macrolevel factors. It maintains that social climates conducive to drug use (availability and popularity of drugs over the years) and social appraisal sources provide important opportunities for drug-related identity change. Social climates conducive to drug use help foster the formation of small groups centered on drug-related activity and meaning systems, i.e., social appraisal sources. Identification with these groups helps reduce one's ego identity discomfort or temporarily solve one's identity problems. It is through this process, the model contends, that young people change from nondrug users to drug misusers. Part 3 discusses these two concepts and how they work in the lives of the four race and gender groups studied here.

The present paper explores race and gender differences in a recent theoretical model (Anderson, 1994), consisting of several micro- and macrofactors, that helps explain the identity-related processes of drug misuse. The approach is qualitative, featuring in-depth interviewing with 45 self-identified drug addicts. The study uncovered support for the general concepts of the identity-based model across four subgroups: Black females, White females, Black males, and White males. However, important race and gender differences emerged. Gender and race-related socialization and stratification explain most of the differences and suggest reconceptualization of the model. The investigation further demonstrates the promise of identity-based approaches in extending our knowledge of the etiology of drug misuse and related intervention policies.

Currently accepted sonographic criteria for antenatal diagnosis of twin-twin transfusion (TTT) syndrome include a monochorionic placenta with same-sex twins, marked growth discordance, and oligohydramnios of the growth-retarded twin with coexistent polyhydramnios of the larger twin. Our previous report of nine women fulfilling these criteria, examined using sequential funipuncture of both fetuses, demonstrated inter-twin blood transfusion in only four cases (44 per cent). It was proposed that traditional sonographic criteria actually describe a heterogeneous group of disorders more appropriately described as the twin oligohydramnios-polydramnios sequence (TOPS). True TTT is a subset of this population, the antenatal diagnosis of which requires specific demonstration of transfusion from one fetus (donor) to the other (recipient). In this report, antenatal placental evaluation has been correlated using duplex pulsed-wave Doppler analysis of arterial blood flow velocity with postpartum gross and histopathologic evaluation of the placenta, with special attention to microvasculature. There was a higher incidence of resistance to blood flow, abnormal umbilical cord insertion, and diminished placental microvasculature associated with oligohydramnic growth-retarded (donor) twins when compared with polyhydramnic (recipient) twins. Based on these observations, it is proposed that TTT and TOPS represent asymmetric placental insufficiency resulting from aberrant placentation.
