Search

The bubble nucleation efficiency of low-energy nuclear recoils in superheated liquids plays a crucial role in interpreting results from direct searches for weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter. The PICO Collaboration presents the results of the efficiencies for bubble nucleation from carbon and fluorine recoils in superheated C$_3$F$_8$ from calibration data taken with 5 distinct neutron spectra at various thermodynamic thresholds ranging from 2.1 keV to 3.9 keV. Instead of assuming any particular functional forms for the nuclear recoil efficiency, a generalized piecewise linear model is proposed with systematic errors included as nuisance parameters to minimize model-introduced uncertainties. A Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) routine is applied to sample the nuclear recoil efficiency for fluorine and carbon at 2.45 keV and 3.29 keV thermodynamic thresholds simultaneously. The nucleation efficiency for fluorine was found to be $\geq 50\, \%$ for nuclear recoils of 3.3 keV (3.7 keV) at a thermodynamic Seitz threshold of 2.45 keV (3.29 keV), and for carbon the efficiency was found to be $\geq 50\, \%$ for recoils of 10.6 keV (11.1 keV) at a threshold of 2.45 keV (3.29 keV). Simulated data sets are used to calculate a p-value for the fit, confirming that the model used is compatible with the data. The fit paradigm is also assessed for potential systematic biases, which although small, are corrected for. The $\beta$ decays of the ground state (gs) and isomeric state (m) of $^{96}$Y have been studied with the total absorption $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The separation of the 8$^{+}$ isomeric state from the 0$^{-}$ ground state was achieved thanks to the purification capabilities of the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system. The $\beta$-intensity distributions of both decays have been independently determined. In the analyses the de-excitation of the 1581.6 keV level in $^{96}$Zr, in which conversion electron emission competes with pair production, has been carefully considered and found to have significant impact on the $\beta$-detector efficiency, influencing the $\beta$-intensity distribution obtained. Our results for $^{96\text{gs}}$Y (0$^+$) confirm the large ground state to ground state $\beta$-intensity probability, although a slightly larger value than reported in previous studies was obtained, amounting to $96.6_{-2.1}^{+0.3}\%$ of the total $\beta$ intensity. Given that the decay of $^{96\text{gs}}$Y is the second most important contributor to the reactor antineutrino spectrum between 5 and 7 MeV, the impact of the present results on reactor antineutrino summation calculations has been evaluated. In the decay of $^{96\text{m}}$Y (8$^{+}$), previously undetected $\beta$ intensity in transitions to states above 6 MeV has been observed. This shows the importance of total absorption $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy measurements of $\beta$ decays with highly fragmented de-excitation patterns. $^{96\text{m}}$Y (8$^{+}$) is a major contributor to reactor decay heat in uranium-plutonium and thorium-uranium fuels around 10 s after fission pulses, and the newly measured average $\beta$ and $\gamma$ energies differ significantly from the previous values in evaluated databases (...)

Many compelling models predict dark matter coupling to the electromagnetic current through higher multipole interactions, while remaining electrically neutral. Different multipole couplings have been studied, among them anapole moment, electric and magnetic dipole moments, and millicharge. This study sets limits on the couplings for these photon-mediated interactions using non-relativistic contact operators in an effective field theory framework. Using data from the PICO-60 bubble chamber leading limits for dark matter masses between 2.7 GeV/c$^2$ and 24 GeV/c$^2$ are reported for the coupling of these photon-mediated dark matter-nucleus interactions. The detector was filled with 52 kg of C$_3$F$_8$ operating at thermodynamic thresholds of 2.45 keV and 3.29 keV, reaching exposures of 1404 kg-day and 1167 kg-day, respectively.

Axions are well-motivated dark matter candidates with simple cosmological production mechanisms. They were originally introduced to solve the strong CP problem, but also arise in a wide range of extensions to the Standard Model. This Snowmass white paper summarizes axion phenomenology and outlines next-generation laboratory experiments proposed to detect axion dark matter. There are vibrant synergies with astrophysical searches and advances in instrumentation including quantum-enabled readout, high-Q resonators and cavities and large high-field magnets. We study the emergence of partonic behavior in scattering processes at large Mandelstam's variable $s$ from string amplitudes in holographic backgrounds. We generalize the approach of Polchinski and Strassler (2001) in two ways. (i) We analyze several holographic confining backgrounds in particular the hard wall model, the soft wall model and Witten's model. (ii) In addition to deriving the asymptotic behavior of the amplitudes at fixed angle and in the Regge limit, we also expand the amplitudes around their poles, integrate over the holographic direction and then re-sum the expansion. Due to dependence of the string tension on the holographic coordinate, the resulting singularities take the form of branch points rather than poles and the amplitudes display branch cuts and acquire a finite imaginary part. This may signal the failure of the PS prescription to reproduce the correct analytic structure at low energies. We also observe that the peaks are more pronounced in the region of small $s$ but fade away for large $s$. In the fixed angle approximation we find in the hard and soft wall models that ${\cal A}\sim s^{2-\Delta/2}$ whereas in Witten's model ${\cal A} \sim s^{3-\Delta/2}$ and ${\cal A} \sim s^{7/3-2\Delta/3}$ for the 11D and 10D formulations, respectively. In the Regge regime ${\cal A}\sim {s^{2}}\,t^{-2+\alpha}\,(\log{s/ t})^{-1+\alpha}$ where $\alpha$ is the power found in the fixed angle regime. Using the pole expansion the result for each model is $Re[{\cal A}] \sim s^{-1}$, $Im[{\cal A}] \sim s^{\alpha}$. We introduce the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD) conceptual design and science program. This haloscope plans to search for bosonic dark matter across the [10$^{-3}$, 1] eV ([0.24, 240] THz) mass range. BREAD proposes a cylindrical metal barrel to convert dark matter into photons, which a novel parabolic reflector design focuses onto a photosensor. This unique geometry enables enclosure in standard cryostats and high-field solenoids, overcoming limitations of current dish antennas. A pilot 0.7 m$^{2}$ barrel experiment planned at Fermilab is projected to surpass existing dark photon coupling constraints by over a decade with one-day runtime. Axion sensitivity requires $<10^{-20}$ W/$\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ sensor noise equivalent power with a 10 T solenoid and 10 m$^{2}$ barrel. We present a new exclusion bound of axion-like particle dark matter with axion-photon couplings above $\mathrm{10^{-13}}$ $\mathrm{GeV^{-1}}$ over the frequency range 4796.7--4799.5 MHz, corresponding to a narrow range of axion masses centered around 19.84 $\mu$eV. This measurement represents the first implementation of a Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA) in a dark matter search. The JTWPA was operated in the insert of the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) as part of an independent receiver chain that was attached to a 0.588-liter cavity. The ability of the JTWPA to deliver high gain over a wide (3 GHz) bandwidth has engendered interest from those aiming to perform broadband axion searches, a longstanding goal in this field.

We report the results from a haloscope search for axion dark matter in the $3.3\text{-}4.2~{\mu}$eV mass range. This search excludes the axion-photon coupling predicted by one of the benchmark models of "invisible" axion dark matter, the KSVZ model. This sensitivity is achieved using a large-volume cavity, a superconducting magnet, an ultra low noise Josephson parametric amplifier, and sub-Kelvin temperatures. In the context of theories with a first order phase transition, we propose a general covariant description of coexisting phases separated by domain walls using an additional order parameter-like degree of freedom. In the case of a holographic Witten model with a confining and deconfined phase, the resulting model extends hydrodynamics and has a simple formulation in terms of a spacetime action with corresponding expressions for the energy-momentum tensor. The proposed description leads to simple analytic profiles of domain walls, including expressions for surface tension density, which agree nicely with holographic numerical solutions, despite the apparent complexity of those gravitational backgrounds., Comment: 51 pages, 11 figures. v2: references updated

Dedicated spectrometers for terahertz radiation with [0.3, 30] THz frequencies using traditional optomechanical interferometry are substantially less common than their infrared and microwave counterparts. This paper presents the design and initial performance measurements of a tabletop Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) for multi-terahertz radiation using infrared optics in a Michelson arrangement. This is coupled to a broadband pyroelectric photodetector designed for [0.1, 30] THz frequencies. We measure spectra of narrowband and broadband input radiation to characterize the performance of this instrument above 10 THz, where signal-to-noise is high. This paves the groundwork for planned upgrades to extend below 10 THz. We also briefly discuss potential astroparticle physics applications of such FTS instruments to broadband axion dark matter searches, whose signature comprises low-rate monochromatic photons with unknown frequency., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

The Skyrme model, though it admits correctly a wide range of static properties of the nucleon, does not seem to reproduce properly the scattering behavior of nucleons at high energies. In this paper we present a $T\bar T$-like deformation of it, inspired by a 1+1 dimensional model, in which boosted nucleons behave like shock waves. The scattering of the latter saturates the Froissart bound. We start by showing that 1+1 dimensional $T\bar T$ deformations of the free abelian pion action are in fact generalizations of the old Heisenberg model for nucleon-nucleon scattering, yielding the same saturation of the Froissart bound. We then deform the strong coupling limit of the bosonized action of multi-flavor QCD in two dimensions using the $T\bar T$ deformation of the WZW action with a mass term. We derive the classical soliton solution that corresponds to the nucleon, determine its mass and discuss its transformation into a shock-wave upon boosting. We uplift this action into a 3+1 dimensional $T\bar T$-like deformation of the Skyrme action. We compare this deformed action to that of chiral perturbation theory. We describe an analysis comparing the $p\bar{p}$ elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in $pp$ collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the $pp$ cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4$\sigma$ level and thus provide evidence for the $t$-channel exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of the same $C$-odd exchange based on the total cross section and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic scattering amplitude in $pp$ scattering. The combined significance of these results is larger than 5$\sigma$ and is interpreted as the first observation of the exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound., Comment: D0 and TOTEM Collaborations

Nuclear matter at large number of colors is necessarily in a solid phase. In particular holographic nuclear matter takes the form of a crystal of instantons of the flavor group. In this article we initiate the analysis of the three-dimensional crystal structures and the orientation patterns for the two-body potential that follows from holographic duality. The outcome of the analysis includes several unexpected results. We perform simulations of ensembles of O(10000) instantons whereby we identify the lattice structure and orientations for the different values of the weight factors of the non-Abelian orientation terms in the two-body potential. The resulting phase diagram is surprisingly complex, including a variety of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic crystals with various global orientation patterns, and various "non-Abelian" crystals where orientations have no preferred direction. The latter include variants of face-centered-cubic, hexagonal, and simple cubic crystals which may have remarkably large or small aspect ratios. The simulation results are augmented by analytic analysis of the long-distance divergences, and numerical computation of the (divergence free) energy differences between the non-Abelian crystals, which allows us to precisely determine the structure of the phase diagram., Comment: 48 pages, 20 figures (including 5 interactive 3D figures). v3: minor comments and explanations added

In this note we study soliton, breather and shockwave solutions in certain two dimensional field theories. These include: (i) Heisenberg's model suggested originally to describe the scattering of high energy nucleons (ii) $T\bar T$ deformations of certain canonical scalar field theories with a potential. We find explicit soliton solutions of these models with sine-Gordon and Higgs-type potentials. We prove that the $T\bar T$ deformation of a theory of a given potential does not correct the mass of the soliton of the undeformed one. We further conjecture the form of breather solutions of these models. We show that certain $T\bar T$ deformed actions admit shockwave solutions that generalize those of Heisenberg's Lagrangian., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures; references added; plots and comments added

Searching for axion dark matter, the ADMX collaboration acquired data from January to October 2018, over the mass range 2.81--3.31 $\mu$eV, corresponding to the frequency range 680--790 MHz. Using an axion haloscope consisting of a microwave cavity in a strong magnetic field, the ADMX experiment excluded Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) axions at 100% dark matter density over this entire frequency range, except for a few gaps due to mode crossings. Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) ultra low noise haloscope technology has enabled the successful completion of two science runs (1A and 1B) that looked for dark matter axions in the $2.66$ to $3.1$ $\mu$eV mass range with Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) sensitivity Ref. [1,2]. Therefore, it is the most sensitive axion search experiment to date in this mass range. We discuss the technological advances made in the last several years to achieve this sensitivity, which includes the implementation of components, such as state-of-the-art quantum limited amplifiers and a dilution refrigerator. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of a frequency tunable Microstrip Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) Amplifier (MSA), in Run 1A, and a Josephson Parametric Amplifier (JPA), in Run 1B, along with novel analysis tools that characterize the system noise temperature., Comment: 23 pages, 28 figures

Recently a novel hadronic state of mass 6.9 GeV, that decays mainly to a pair of charmonia, was observed in LHCb. The data also reveals a broader structure centered around 6490 MeV and suggests another unconfirmed resonance centered at around 7240 MeV, very near to the threshold of two doubly charmed $\Xi_{cc}$ baryons. We argue in this note that these exotic hadrons are genuine tetraquarks and not molecules of charmonia. It is conjectured that they are V-baryonium tetraquarks, namely, have an inner structure of a baryonic vertex with a $cc$ diquark attached to it, which is connected by a string to an anti-baryonic vertex with a $\bar c \bar c$ anti-diquark. We examine these states as the analogs of the states $\Psi(4360)$ and $Y(4630)$/$\Psi(4660)$ which are charmonium-like tetraquarks. One way to test these claims is by searching for a significant decay of the state at 7.2 GeV into $\Xi_{cc}\overline\Xi_{cc}$. Such a decay would be the analog of the decay of the state $Y(4630)$ into to $\Lambda_c\overline\Lambda_c$. We further argue that there should be trajectories of both orbital and radial excited states of the $X(6900)$. We predict their masses. We perform extensive classifications of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids on the simple cubic, body centered cubic, and face centered cubic lattices using a spin-rotation invariant fermionic projective symmetry group approach. Taking into account that all three lattices share the same point group $O_h$, we apply an efficient gauge where the classification for the simple cubic lattice can be partially carried over to the other two lattices. We identify hundreds of projective representations for each of the three lattices, however, when constructing short-range mean-field models for the fermionic partons (spinons) these phases collapse to only very few relevant cases. We self-consistently calculate the corresponding mean-field parameters for frustrated Heisenberg models on all three lattices with up to third neighbor spin interactions and discuss the spinon dispersions, ground state energies and dynamical spin structure factors. Our results indicate that phases with non-uniform spinon hopping or pairing amplitudes are energetically favored. An unusual situation is identified for the fcc lattice where the spinon dispersion minimizing the mean-field energy features a network of symmetry protected line-like zero modes in reciprocal space. We further discuss characteristic fingerprints of these phases in the dynamical spin structure factor which may help to identify and distinguish them in future numerical or experimental studies.

Classical rotating closed string are folded strings. At the folding points the scalar curvature associated with the induced metric diverges. As a consequence one cannot properly quantize the fluctuations around the classical solution since there is no complete set of normalizable eigenmodes. Furthermore in the non-critical effective string action of Polchinski and Strominger, there is a divergence associated with the folds. We overcome this obstacle by putting a massive particle at each folding point which can be used as a regulator. Using this method we compute the spectrum of quantum fluctuations around the rotating string and the intercept of the leading Regge trajectory. The results we find are that the intercepts are $a=1$ and $a=2$ for the open and closed string respectively, independent of the target space dimension. We argue that in generic theories with an effective string description, one can expect corrections from finite masses associated with either the endpoints of an open string or the folding points on a closed string. In $\beta$-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed $\gamma$-ray emission. In this work we revisit the $4\pi\gamma-\beta$ method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the $\beta$-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large ground state branches. The method is relevant for nuclear structure studies as well. Pertinent formulae are revised and extended to the special case of $\beta$-delayed neutron emitters, and the robustness of the method is demonstrated with synthetic data. We apply it to a number of measured decays that serve as test cases and discuss the features of the method. Finally, we obtain ground state feeding intensities with reduced uncertainty for four relevant decays that will allow future improvements in antineutrino spectrum and decay heat calculations using the summation method.

This paper reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the galactic halo in the mass range $2.81$-$3.31$ ${\mu}eV$. This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics, and marks the first time a haloscope search has been able to search for axions at mode crossings using an alternate cavity configuration. Unprecedented sensitivity in this higher mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first stage signal amplifier.

Adopting the Standard Halo Model (SHM) of an isotropic Maxwellian velocity distribution for dark matter (DM) particles in the Galaxy, the most stringent current constraints on their spin-dependent scattering cross-section with nucleons come from the IceCube neutrino observatory and the PICO-60 C$_3$F$_8$ superheated bubble chamber experiments. The former is sensitive to high energy neutrinos from the self-annihilation of DM particles captured in the Sun, while the latter looks for nuclear recoil events from DM scattering off nucleons. Although slower DM particles are more likely to be captured by the Sun, the faster ones are more likely to be detected by PICO. Recent N-body simulations suggest significant deviations from the SHM for the smooth halo component of the DM, while observations hint at a dominant fraction of the local DM being in substructures. We use the method of Ferrer et al. (2015) to exploit the complementarity between the two approaches and derive conservative constraints on DM-nucleon scattering. Our results constrain $\sigma_{\mathrm{SD}} \lesssim 3 \times 10^{-39} \mathrm{cm}^2$ (6 $ \times 10^{-38} \mathrm{cm}^2$) at $\gtrsim 90\%$ C.L. for a DM particle of mass 1~TeV annihilating into $\tau^+ \tau^-$ ($b\bar{b}$) with a local density of $\rho_{\mathrm{DM}} = 0.3~\mathrm{ GeV/cm}^3$. The decays of the $\beta$-delayed neutron emitters $^{137}$I and $^{95}$Rb have been studied with the total absorption $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy technique. The purity of the beams provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the ion guide isotope separator on-line facility in Jyv\"askyl\"a allowed us to carry out a campaign of isotopically pure measurements with the decay total absorption $\gamma$-ray spectrometer, a segmented detector composed of eighteen NaI(Tl) modules. The contamination coming from the interaction of neutrons with the spectrometer has been carefully studied, and we have tested the use of time differences between prompt $\gamma$-rays and delayed neutron interactions to eliminate this source of contamination. Due to the sensitivity of our spectrometer, we have found a significant amount of $\beta$-intensity to states above the neutron separation energy that de-excite by $\gamma$-rays, comparable to the neutron emission probability. The competition between $\gamma$ de-excitation and neutron emission has been compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations, and it can be understood as a nuclear structure effect. In addition, we have studied the impact of the $\beta$-intensity distributions determined in this work on reactor decay heat and reactor antineutrino spectrum summation calculations. The robustness of our results is demonstrated by a thorough study of uncertainties, and with the reproduction of the spectra of the individual modules and the module-multiplicity gated spectra. This work represents the state-of-the-art of our analysis methodology for segmented total absorption spectrometers.

In this note we describe hadrons: mesons and baryons as strings with electric charges on their endpoints. We consider here only the neutral system with opposite charges coupled to an external constant electric and magnetic fields. We derive certain classical solutions including rotating folded open strings. We write down the mode expansion and canonically quantize the system. The OPEs associated with such strings are determined. We re-derive the non-commutativity of the zero modes and the fact that the charges modify the spacetime metric. We show that the quantum worldsheet energy momentum tensor on the boundary is affected by the endpoint charges and differs from the corresponding Noether current. We determine the generalization of the Veneziano scattering amplitude for such strings in the critical dimension. Phenomenological implications are addressed and in particular we show that the external magnetic field can be tuned so that the amplitude vanishes for particular kinematic setups. We discuss the generalization of such strings to non-critical four dimensional spacetime. The primary advantage of moderately superheated bubble chamber detectors is their simultaneous sensitivity to nuclear recoils from WIMP dark matter and insensitivity to electron recoil backgrounds. A comprehensive analysis of PICO gamma calibration data demonstrates for the first time that electron recoils in C$_3$F$_8$ scale in accordance with a new nucleation mechanism, rather than one driven by a hot-spike as previously supposed. Using this semi-empirical model, bubble chamber nucleation thresholds may be tuned to be sensitive to lower energy nuclear recoils while maintaining excellent electron recoil rejection. The PICO-40L detector will exploit this model to achieve thermodynamic thresholds as low as 2.8 keV while being dominated by single-scatter events from coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering of solar neutrinos. In one year of operation, PICO-40L can improve existing leading limits from PICO on spin-dependent WIMP-proton coupling by nearly an order of magnitude for WIMP masses greater than 3 GeV c$^{-2}$ and will have the ability to surpass all existing non-xenon bounds on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon coupling for WIMP masses from 3 to 40 GeV c$^{-2}$., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures
