In percutaneous pelvic trauma surgery, accurate placement of Kirschner wires (K-wires) is crucial to ensure effective fracture fixation and avoid complications due to breaching the cortical bone along an unsuitable trajectory. Surgical navigation via mixed reality (MR) can help achieve precise wire placement in a low-profile form factor. Current approaches in this domain are as yet unsuitable for real-world deployment because they fall short of guaranteeing accurate visual feedback due to uncontrolled bending of the wire. To ensure accurate feedback, we introduce StraightTrack, an MR navigation system designed for percutaneous wire placement in complex anatomy. StraightTrack features a marker body equipped with a rigid access cannula that mitigates wire bending due to interactions with soft tissue and a covered bony surface. Integrated with an Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Display (OST HMD) capable of tracking the cannula body, StraightTrack offers real-time 3D visualization and guidance without external trackers, which are prone to losing line-of-sight. In phantom experiments with two experienced orthopedic surgeons, StraightTrack improves wire placement accuracy, achieving the ideal trajectory within $5.26 \pm 2.29$ mm and $2.88 \pm 1.49$ degree, compared to over 12.08 mm and 4.07 degree for comparable methods. As MR navigation systems continue to mature, StraightTrack realizes their potential for internal fracture fixation and other percutaneous orthopedic procedures.

We show that a symmetric informationally-complete positive operator-valued measure exists in a given dimension $d$ if and only if there exists a $d^2$-dimensional operator system satisfying certain order-theoretic conditions. We also describe a method of constructing such an operator system and demonstrate that the first step of this construction can be carried out successfully. Quantum networks will provide unconditional security for communication, computation and distributed sensing tasks. We report on an experimental demonstration of private parameter estimation, which allows a global phase to be evaluated without revealing the constituent local phase values. This is achieved by sharing a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state among three users who first verify the shared state before performing the sensing task. We implement the verification protocol, based on stabilizer measurements, and measure an average failure rate of 0.038(5) which we use to establish the security and privacy parameters. Cosmic Explorer (CE) is a next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave observatory that is being designed in the 2020s and is envisioned to begin operations in the 2030s together with the Einstein Telescope in Europe. The CE concept currently consists of two widely separated L-shaped observatories in the United States, one with 40 km-long arms and the other with 20 km-long arms. This order of magnitude increase in scale with respect to the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observatories will, together with technological improvements, deliver an order of magnitude greater astronomical reach, allowing access to gravitational waves from remnants of the first stars and opening a wide discovery aperture to the novel and unknown. In addition to pushing the reach of gravitational-wave astronomy, CE endeavors to approach the lifecycle of large scientific facilities in a way that prioritizes mutually beneficial relationships with local and Indigenous communities. We present a fully autonomous real-world RL framework for mobile manipulation that can learn policies without extensive instrumentation or human supervision. This is enabled by 1) task-relevant autonomy, which guides exploration towards object interactions and prevents stagnation near goal states, 2) efficient policy learning by leveraging basic task knowledge in behavior priors, and 3) formulating generic rewards that combine human-interpretable semantic information with low-level, fine-grained observations. We demonstrate that our approach allows Spot robots to continually improve their performance on a set of four challenging mobile manipulation tasks, obtaining an average success rate of 80% across tasks, a 3-4 improvement over existing approaches. This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Recent large language models (LLMs) demonstrate impressive capabilities in handling long contexts, some exhibiting near-perfect recall on synthetic retrieval tasks. However, these evaluations have mainly focused on English text and involved a single target sentence within lengthy contexts. Our work investigates how LLM performance generalizes to multilingual settings with multiple hidden target sentences. We create a new dataset -- mLongRR -- to comprehensively evaluate several multilingual long-context LLMs on retrieval and reasoning tasks across five languages: English, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Swahili, and Somali. These languages share the Latin script but belong to distinct language families and resource levels. Our analysis reveals a significant performance gap between languages. The best-performing models such as Gemini-1.5 and GPT-4o, achieve around 96% accuracy in English to around 36% in Somali with a single target sentence. However, this accuracy drops to 40% in English and 0% in Somali when dealing with three target sentences. We use the rms and lag spectra of the type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) to study the properties of the Comptonisation region (aka corona) during the low/hard and hard-intermediate states of the main outburst and reflare of MAXI J1348$-$630. We simultaneously fit the time-averaged energy spectrum of the source and the fractional rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPO with the time-dependent Comptonization model vKompth. The data can be explained by two physically connected coronae interacting with the accretion disc via a feedback loop of X-ray photons. The best-fitting model consists of a corona of $\sim$10$^3$ km located at the inner edge of the disc and a second corona of $\sim$10$^4$ km horizontally extended and covering the inner parts of the accretion disc. The properties of both coronae during the reflare are similar to those during the low/hard state of the main outburst, reinforcing the idea that both the outburst and the reflare are driven by the same physical mechanisms. We combine our results for the type-C QPO with those from previous work focused on the study of type-A and type-B QPOs with the same model to study the evolution of the geometry of the corona through the whole outburst, including the reflare of MAXI J1348$-$630. Finally, we show that the sudden increase in the phase-lag frequency spectrum and the sharp drop in the coherence function previously observed in MAXI J1348$-$630 are due to the type-C QPO during the decay of the outburst and can be explained in terms of the geometry of the coronae., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. High-resolution flood probability maps are essential for addressing the limitations of existing flood risk assessment approaches but are often limited by the availability of historical event data. Also, producing simulated data needed for creating probabilistic flood maps using physics-based models involves significant computation and time effort inhibiting the feasibility. To address this gap, this study introduces Flood-Precip GAN (Flood-Precipitation Generative Adversarial Network), a novel methodology that leverages generative machine learning to simulate large-scale synthetic inundation data to produce probabilistic flood maps. With a focus on Harris County, Texas, Flood-Precip GAN begins with training a cell-wise depth estimator using a limited number of physics-based model-generated precipitation-flood events. This model, which emphasizes precipitation-based features, outperforms universal models. Subsequently, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) with constraints is employed to conditionally generate synthetic precipitation records. Strategic thresholds are established to filter these records, ensuring close alignment with true precipitation patterns. For each cell, synthetic events are smoothed using a K-nearest neighbors algorithm and processed through the depth estimator to derive synthetic depth distributions. By iterating this procedure and after generating 10,000 synthetic precipitation-flood events, we construct flood probability maps in various formats, considering different inundation depths. Validation through similarity and correlation metrics confirms the fidelity of the synthetic depth distributions relative to true data. Flood-Precip GAN provides a scalable solution for generating synthetic flood depth data needed to create high-resolution flood probability maps, significantly enhancing flood preparedness and mitigation efforts.

Training deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) presents unique challenges, including the pervasive issue of elimination singularities, consistent deactivation of nodes leading to degenerate manifolds within the loss landscape. These singularities impede efficient learning by disrupting feature propagation. To mitigate this, we introduce Pool Skip, an architectural enhancement that strategically combines a Max Pooling, a Max Unpooling, a 3 times 3 convolution, and a skip connection. This configuration helps stabilize the training process and maintain feature integrity across layers. We also propose the Weight Inertia hypothesis, which underpins the development of Pool Skip, providing theoretical insights into mitigating degradation caused by elimination singularities through dimensional and affine compensation. We evaluate our method on a variety of benchmarks, focusing on both 2D natural and 3D medical imaging applications, including tasks such as classification and segmentation. Our findings highlight Pool Skip's effectiveness in facilitating more robust CNN training and improving model performance.

Accurate segmentation of multiple organs and the differentiation of pathological tissues in medical imaging are crucial but challenging, especially for nuanced classifications and ambiguous organ boundaries. To tackle these challenges, we introduce GASA-UNet, a refined U-Net-like model featuring a novel Global Axial Self-Attention (GASA) block. This block processes image data as a 3D entity, with each 2D plane representing a different anatomical cross-section. Voxel features are defined within this spatial context, and a Multi-Head Self-Attention (MHSA) mechanism is utilized on extracted 1D patches to facilitate connections across these planes. Positional embeddings (PE) are incorporated into our attention framework, enriching voxel features with spatial context and enhancing tissue classification and organ edge delineation. Our model has demonstrated promising improvements in segmentation performance, particularly for smaller anatomical structures, as evidenced by enhanced Dice scores and Normalized Surface Dice (NSD) on three benchmark datasets, i.e., BTCV, AMOS, and KiTS23.

Generative models can enhance discriminative classifiers by constructing complex feature spaces, thereby improving performance on intricate datasets. Conventional methods typically augment datasets with more detailed feature representations or increase dimensionality to make nonlinear data linearly separable. Utilizing a generative model solely for feature space processing falls short of unlocking its full potential within a classifier and typically lacks a solid theoretical foundation. We base our approach on a novel hypothesis: the probability information (logit) derived from a single model training can be used to generate the equivalent of multiple training sessions. Leveraging the central limit theorem, this synthesized probability information is anticipated to converge toward the true probability more accurately. To achieve this goal, we propose the Bernoulli-Gaussian Decision Block (BGDB), a novel module inspired by the Central Limit Theorem and the concept that the mean of multiple Bernoulli trials approximates the probability of success in a single trial. Specifically, we utilize Improved Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (IDDPM) to model the probability of Bernoulli Trials. Our approach shifts the focus from reconstructing features to reconstructing logits, transforming the logit from a single iteration into logits analogous to those from multiple experiments. We provide the theoretical foundations of our approach through mathematical analysis and validate its effectiveness through experimental evaluation using various datasets for multiple imaging tasks, including both classification and segmentation.

Large language model-based (LLM) agents are emerging as a powerful enabler of robust embodied intelligence due to their capability of planning complex action sequences. Sound planning ability is necessary for robust automation in many task domains, but especially in surgical automation. These agents rely on a highly detailed natural language representation of the scene. Thus, to leverage the emergent capabilities of LLM agents for surgical task planning, developing similarly powerful and robust perception algorithms is necessary to derive a detailed scene representation of the environment from visual input. Previous research has focused primarily on enabling LLM-based task planning while adopting simple yet severely limited perception solutions to meet the needs for bench-top experiments but lack the critical flexibility to scale to less constrained settings. In this work, we propose an alternate perception approach -- a digital twin-based machine perception approach that capitalizes on the convincing performance and out-of-the-box generalization of recent vision foundation models. Integrating our digital twin-based scene representation and LLM agent for planning with the dVRK platform, we develop an embodied intelligence system and evaluate its robustness in performing peg transfer and gauze retrieval tasks. Our approach shows strong task performance and generalizability to varied environment settings. Despite convincing performance, this work is merely a first step towards the integration of digital twin-based scene representations. Future studies are necessary for the realization of a comprehensive digital twin framework to improve the interpretability and generalizability of embodied intelligence in surgery.

A common envelope (CE) is proposed as the origin of the early postoutburst spectra of many novae. A simple model is proposed to explain the properties of the CE based on the emission line strengths and an assumed density distribution. Rapid changes in the spectrum during postoutburst decline are suggested as possible evidence for a CE. Time-resolved spectra from the ARAS group show sudden spectral shifts that are correlated with detected gamma ray emission, suggestive of its possible origin on the WD that produces a change in condition within the CE. Plastic pollution, mainly from lost fishing gear composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP), poses a significant environmental obstacle. This study evaluates the potential of recycling PP from fishnet/rope and reinforcing it with glass fiber (GF) in the form of 3D printer filaments as a way to reduce/prevent ocean plastic. Two materials, one virgin (vPP-GF) and one made up of recycled polypropylene and virgin glass fibers (rPP-GF), were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry, tensile, and Charpy impact tests. From the results, it was found that rPP-GF often outperformed vPP-GF. rPP-GF had a higher melting and crystallization point, likely a higher crystallinity, and could withstand a higher tensile stress, while vPP-GF could withstand a higher tensile strain. Further analysis revealed the potential presence of HDPE within the rPP-GF composite, which was not reported by the manufacturer. This significantly affected the Charpy test and made it difficult to draw conclusions from the resulting data. Nevertheless, their comparability in terms of mechanical and material properties indicates the strong potential of recycling polypropylene fishnet/rope and reinforcing it with glass fibers to extend their lifespan and reduce ocean plastic., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Graph domain adaptation has recently enabled knowledge transfer across different graphs. However, without the semantic information on target graphs, the performance on target graphs is still far from satisfactory. To address the issue, we study the problem of active graph domain adaptation, which selects a small quantitative of informative nodes on the target graph for extra annotation. This problem is highly challenging due to the complicated topological relationships and the distribution discrepancy across graphs. In this paper, we propose a novel approach named Dual Consistency Delving with Topological Uncertainty (DELTA) for active graph domain adaptation. Our DELTA consists of an edge-oriented graph subnetwork and a path-oriented graph subnetwork, which can explore topological semantics from complementary perspectives. In particular, our edge-oriented graph subnetwork utilizes the message passing mechanism to learn neighborhood information, while our path-oriented graph subnetwork explores high-order relationships from substructures. To jointly learn from two subnetworks, we roughly select informative candidate nodes with the consideration of consistency across two subnetworks. Then, we aggregate local semantics from its K-hop subgraph based on node degrees for topological uncertainty estimation. To overcome potential distribution shifts, we compare target nodes and their corresponding source nodes for discrepancy scores as an additional component for fine selection. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that DELTA outperforms various state-of-the-art approaches.

The past few centuries have witnessed a dramatic growth in scientific and technological knowledge. However, the nature of that growth - whether exponential or otherwise - remains controversial, perhaps partly due to the lack of quantitative characterizations. We evaluated knowledge as a collective thinking structure, using citation networks as a representation, by examining extensive datasets that include 213 million publications (1800-2020) and 7.6 million patents (1976-2020). We found that knowledge - which we conceptualize as the reduction of uncertainty in a knowledge network - grew linearly over time in naturally formed citation networks that themselves expanded exponentially. Moreover, our results revealed inflection points in the growth of knowledge that often corresponded to important developments within fields, such as major breakthroughs, new paradigms, or the emergence of entirely new areas of study. Around these inflection points, knowledge may grow rapidly or exponentially on a local scale, although the overall growth rate remains linear when viewed globally. Previous studies concluding an exponential growth of knowledge may have focused primarily on these local bursts of rapid growth around key developments, leading to the misconception of a global exponential trend. Our findings help to reconcile the discrepancy between the perceived exponential growth and the actual linear growth of knowledge by highlighting the distinction between local and global growth patterns. Overall, our findings reveal major science development trends for policymaking, showing that producing knowledge is far more challenging than producing papers.

We present a monoenergetic positron beam specifically tailored to the needs of (near-) surface positron annihilation spectroscopy. The Setup for LOw-energy Positron Experiments (SLOPE) comprises a high-activity 22Na source, a tungsten moderator, electrostatic extraction and acceleration, magnetic beam guidance, as well as an analysis chamber with a movable sample holder and a {\gamma}-ray detection system. The tungsten moderator foil, biased between 0 and 30 V, in combination with the HV-biasable sample holder, enables positron implantation energies between 3 eV and 40 keV. At low energies (<20 eV), the count rate typically amounts to 4400 counts per second, and the beam diameter is smaller than 12 +/- 3 mm. We conduct phase space simulations of the positron beam using COMSOL Multiphysics (c) to characterize the beam properties and compare the findings with the experimentally determined energy-dependent beam diameter. To showcase the capabilities of SLOPE, we perform studies of positronium (Ps) formation on boehmite and depth-resolved coincidence Doppler-broadening spectroscopy (CDBS) of copper. In particular, the Ps formation at the hydrogen-terminated surface of boehmite is found to be maximum at a positron implantation energy of 10 eV. The range of positron energies for which we observe Ps formation agrees with the hydrogen ionization energy.

We show that for any surface of genus at least 3 equipped with any choice of framing, the graph of non-separating curves with winding number 0 with respect to the framing is hierarchically hyperbolic but not Gromov hyperbolic. We also describe how to build analogues of the curve graph for marked strata of abelian differentials that capture the combinatorics of their boundaries, analogous to how the curve graph captures the combinatorics of the augmented Teichmueller space. Given an instance, a multi-event survival model predicts the time until that instance experiences each of several different events. These events are not mutually exclusive and there are often statistical dependencies between them. There are relatively few multi-event survival results, most focusing on producing a simple risk score, rather than the time-to-event itself. To overcome these issues, we introduce MENSA, a novel, deep learning approach for multi-event survival analysis that can jointly learn representations of the input covariates and the dependence structure between events. As a practical motivation for multi-event survival analysis, we consider the problem of predicting the time until a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) loses various physical functions, i.e., the ability to speak, swallow, write, or walk. When estimating when a patient is no longer able to swallow, our approach achieves an L1-Margin loss of 278.8 days, compared to 355.2 days when modeling each event separately. In addition, we also evaluate our approach in single-event and competing risk scenarios by modeling the censoring and event distributions as equal contributing factors in the optimization process, and show that our approach performs well across multiple benchmark datasets. The current paradigm for motion planning generates solutions from scratch for every new problem, which consumes significant amounts of time and computational resources. For complex, cluttered scenes, motion planning approaches can often take minutes to produce a solution, while humans are able to accurately and safely reach any goal in seconds by leveraging their prior experience. We seek to do the same by applying data-driven learning at scale to the problem of motion planning. Our approach builds a large number of complex scenes in simulation, collects expert data from a motion planner, then distills it into a reactive generalist policy. We then combine this with lightweight optimization to obtain a safe path for real world deployment. We perform a thorough evaluation of our method on 64 motion planning tasks across four diverse environments with randomized poses, scenes and obstacles, in the real world, demonstrating an improvement of 23%, 17% and 79% motion planning success rate over state of the art sampling, optimization and learning based planning methods. Intrinsic motivation (IM) and reward shaping are common methods for guiding the exploration of reinforcement learning (RL) agents by adding pseudo-rewards. Designing these rewards is challenging, however, and they can counter-intuitively harm performance. To address this, we characterize them as reward shaping in Bayes-Adaptive Markov Decision Processes (BAMDPs), which formalizes the value of exploration by formulating the RL process as updating a prior over possible MDPs through experience. RL algorithms can be viewed as BAMDP policies; instead of attempting to find optimal algorithms by solving BAMDPs directly, we use it at a theoretical framework for understanding how pseudo-rewards guide suboptimal algorithms. By decomposing BAMDP state value into the value of the information collected plus the prior value of the physical state, we show how psuedo-rewards can help by compensating for RL algorithms' misestimation of these two terms, yielding a new typology of IM and reward shaping approaches. We carefully extend the potential-based shaping theorem to BAMDPs to prove that when pseudo-rewards are BAMDP Potential-based shaping Functions (BAMPFs), they preserve optimal, or approximately optimal, behavior of RL algorithms; otherwise, they can corrupt even optimal learners. We finally give guidance on how to design or convert existing pseudo-rewards to BAMPFs by expressing assumptions about the environment as potential functions on BAMDP states.

We present the first X-ray polarization measurements of GX 339-4. IXPE observed this source twice during its 2023-2024 outburst, once in the soft-intermediate state and again during a soft state. The observation taken during the intermediate state shows significant ($4\sigma$) polarization degree P = $1.3\% \pm 0.3\%$ and polarization angle $\theta$ = -74\degree $\pm$ 7\degree only in the 3 - 8 keV band. FORS2 at VLT observed the source simultaneously detecting optical polarization in the B, V, R, I bands (between $0.1%$ and $0.7\%$), all roughly aligned with the X-ray polarization. We also detect a discrete jet knot from radio observations taken later in time; this knot would have been ejected from the system around the same time as the hard-to-soft X-ray state transition and a bright radio flare occurred $\sim$3 months earlier. The proper motion of the jet knot provides a direct measurement of the jet orientation angle on the plane of the sky at the time of the ejection. We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral-timing measurements of the prototypical Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. The source was observed with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST in June 2023 at a MIR luminosity L(MIR)~10^{36} erg/s exceeding past IR levels by about a factor of 10. By contrast, the X-ray flux is much fainter than the historical average, in the source's now-persistent 'obscured' state. The MIRI low-resolution spectrum shows a plethora of emission lines, the strongest of which are consistent with recombination in the hydrogen Pfund (Pf) series and higher. Low amplitude (~1%) but highly significant peak-to-peak photometric variability is found on timescales of ~1,000 s. The brightest Pf(6-5) emission line lags the continuum. Though difficult to constrain accurately, this lag is commensurate with light-travel timescales across the outer accretion disc or with expected recombination timescales inferred from emission line diagnostics. Using the emission line as a bolometric indicator suggests a moderate (~5-30% Eddington) intrinsic accretion rate. Multiwavelength monitoring shows that JWST caught the source close in-time to unprecedentedly bright MIR and radio long-term flaring. Assuming a thermal bremsstrahlung origin for the MIRI continuum suggests an unsustainably high mass-loss rate during this time unless the wind remains bound, though other possible origins cannot be ruled out. PAH features previously detected with Spitzer are now less clear in the MIRI data, arguing for possible destruction of dust in the interim.
