Hybrid fiber reinforced concrete possessing both strength and durability was developed using the orthogonal test method. Various factors' effects on the fundamental properties of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete were investigated. The results indicate that the water-binder ratio significantly influences compressive strength. Both the basalt fiber content and polyvinyl alcohol fiber content significantly impact fluidity. Both water-binder ratio and polyvinyl alcohol fiber content significantly affect electric flux, which decreases with increasing fly ash content. The hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete underwent comparison and evaluation via range analysis and variance analysis, culminating in the determination of the optimal concrete mix ratio using the efficiency coefficient method. This concrete exhibits superior strength and enhanced resistance to chloride penetration, making it more suitable for harsh environments.

Abstract Background Mechanosensitive ion channel PIEZOs have been widely reported to involve inflammation and pain. This study aimed to clarify expression patterns of PIEZOs and their potential relations to irreversible pulpitis. Materials and methods Normal pulp tissues (n = 29) from patients with impacted third molars and inflamed pulp tissues (n = 23) from patients with irreversible pulpitis were collected. Pain levels were assessed using a numerical rating scale. PIEZO expressions were measured using real-time PCR and then confirmed using GEO datasets GSE77459, immunoblot, and immunohistochemistry staining. Correlations of PIEZO mRNA expression with inflammatory markers, pain markers, or clinical pain levels were evaluated using Spearman’s correlation analysis. Univariate analysis was conducted to analyze PIEZO expressions based on pain description and clinical examinations of cold test, percussion, palpation, and bite test. Results Compared with normal pulp tissues, mRNA expression levels of PIEZO1 were significantly increased in inflamed pulp tissues, while PIEZO2 was significantly decreased, which was further confirmed in GSE77459 and on a protein and histological level. The positive correlation of the mRNA expression levels between PIEZO1 and inflammatory markers, as well as between PIEZO2 and pain markers, was verified. PIEZO2 expression was also positively correlated with pain levels. Besides, irreversible pulpitis patients who reported continuous pain and who detected a positive response to cold stimulus exhibited a higher expression level of PIEZO2 in the inflamed pulp tissues. By contrast, patients reporting pain duration of more than one week showed a higher expression level of PIEZO1. Conclusions This study demonstrated the upregulation of PIEZO1 and the downregulation of PIEZO2 in irreversible pulpitis and revealed the potential relation of PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 to inflammation and pain. These findings suggested that PIEZOs might play critical roles in the progression of irreversible pulpitis and paved the way for further investigations aimed at novel therapies of irreversible pulpitis by targeting PIEZOs.

Abstract Background Entirely impacted mandibular third molar (EIM3M) concerns the pathological external root resorption (ERR) of the adjacent mandibular second molar (M2M) and formation of granulation tissue between two molars. The study aimed to clarify the effect of αENaC, a mechano-sensitive molecule, to explore the mechanical mechanism in this scenario. Methods The force EIM3M exerted on M2M was proved by finite element analysis. αENaC expressions were tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), immunoblotting and immunofluorescence. Inflammatory and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related molecules expressions were also detected by real-time PCR. The correlation was analyzed by Spearman’s correlation analysis, and receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curve was further exhibited. Results The force was concentrated in the ERR area. αENaC was upregulated, positively correlated with ERR degree and localized to the fibroblasts in ERR granulation tissues. Moreover, αENaC was respectively and positively associated with elevated TNF-α and N-cadherin in ERR granulation tissues. More importantly, ROC analysis verified αENaC as a novel indication of the incidence of this disease. Conclusions Our finding revealed the force from EIM3M causing ERR of M2M, and elucidated the expression and localization of αENaC and its positive correlation with inflammation, EMT and disease severity, suggesting a novel indication in this disease.

Changes in global precipitation patterns and increased nitrogen (N) deposition have important effects on the dynamics of the carbon (C) cycle in grassland ecosystems. Long-term overgrazing caused heavy degradation of grasslands and more than 60 % of China’s natural grasslands experienced moderate to severe degradation. To elucidate the effects of increasing precipitation and N deposition on C fluxes in a desert steppe ecosystem, experiments with nitrogen and water addition were conducted with four treatments, i.e., control (CK), N addition (N), water addition (W), combined addition of N and water (NW), in a Stipa breviflora desert steppe that had been heavily degraded. The ecosystem CO2 fluxes, including gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), and ecosystem respiration (ER), were determined using the closed chamber method during the growing seasons (May–October) of 2019 and 2020. Our results showed that water and nitrogen addition did not change the patterns of the seasonal dynamics of the ecosystem CO2 fluxes, indicating that water is the main limiting factor of CO2 fluxes in the studied desert steppe ecosystem. Precipitation increase (both W and NW treatments) stimulated all three components of the ecosystem CO2 fluxes, but N addition alone enhanced NEE and GEP while had no significant effects on ER, indicating water-induced increase of GEP was caused by both NEE and ER while N-induced increase of GEP was mainly caused by increases of NEE. Water addition can increase the effectiveness of N addition, but there was little interaction between the two factors. Soil moisture was more significantly correlated than soil temperature with ecosystem CO2 fluxes, and water addition could further enhance the correlation of ecosystem CO2 fluxes with soil temperature and moisture. Overall, ecosystem CO2 fluxes are more sensitive to the precipitation increase than to the N addition. These findings indicate that water supply will play more important role in ecosystem productivity of the desert steppe under the predicted scenarios of precipitation increase and increasing N deposition, which also provides scientific evidence for the restoration of those degraded desert steppe induced by overgrazing can not be achieved simply by increasing soil N availability.

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and practices of teachers about inclusive education and to propose solutions to the problems experienced by the teachers in the light of the study findings. The study was carried out by qualitative research approach and case study design was used. The participants of the study consisted of 20 primary school teachers who worked in public schools in the 2019-2020 academic year and participated voluntarily in this study. Data were analyzed through descriptive analysis technique. As a result of this study it was found that the teachers experienced a lack of conceptual clarity regarding the definition of inclusive education and a great majority of them focused on the main philosophy of inclusiveness, yet few of them attempted to relate inclusiveness to instructional practices. Moreover, the findings revealed that the teachers did not perform activities directed to the application of inclusive education in their classes and that they had different expectations from the Turkish Ministry of National Education, school administrations, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and parents.

Aim: To evaluate an intravitreally injected nanoparticle platform designed to deliver VEGF-A siRNA to inhibit retinal neovascular leakage as a new treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. Materials & methods: Fusogenic lipid-coated porous silicon nanoparticles loaded with VEGF-A siRNA, and pendant neovascular integrin-homing iRGD, were evaluated for efficacy by intravitreal injection in a rabbit model of retinal neovascularization. Results: For 12 weeks post-treatment, a reduction in vascular leakage was observed for treated diseased eyes versus control eyes (p = 0.0137), with a corresponding reduction in vitreous VEGF-A. Conclusion: Fusogenic lipid-coated porous silicon nanoparticles siRNA delivery provides persistent knockdown of VEGF-A and reduced leakage in a rabbit model of retinal neovascularization as a potential new intraocular therapeutic.

Narrative is the principal means of encoding and conveying personal experiences. The current study aims to investigate the personal regret narratives of Turkish university students regarding their personal experiences and to evaluate these narratives from a gender-based perspective. To this end, 116 Turkish university students have participated in this study and the selected personal regret narratives are analyzed within the frame of Labovian narrative categories: abstract, orientation, complicating actions, coda, evaluation and result or resolution. In addition to the existence of these categories, their organizational patterns are also compared with respect to the gender of the participants. The evaluation of the narratives demonstrated that all the narrative components are employed by the Turkish university students; however, female students seem to be more inclined to connect their experiences to daily events or other events in their lives by applying coda more frequently than male students using language as independence symbol instead of employing it to develop intimacy as female students do. The results of this study might contribute to discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and social psychology as written regret narratives allow us to have a deeper understanding of how Turkish students organize their experiences which reflects social, discoursal and cognitive dimensions.

ABSTRACTWorldwide, 10–15% human prion disease are genetic and inherited, due to the special mutations or insertions in PRNP gene. Herein, we reported two Chinese patients with rapidly progressive dementia who were referred to the national Creutzfeldt–Jacob disease (CJD) surveillance as suspected CJD. Those two patients displayed sporadic CJD (sCJD)-like clinical phenotype, e.g. rapidly progressive dementia, visional and mental problems, sCJD-associated abnormalities in MRI. A missense mutation was identified in one PRNP allele of these two patients, resulting in a change from serine to asparagine at codon 97 (S97N). RT-QuIC of the cerebrospinal fluid samples from those two cases were positive. It indicates that they are very likely to be prion disease.

This study aims to investigate the cognitive mechanisms of rural residents amidst the renewal of suburban historical and cultural villages by examining the interplay between nostalgia, collective memory, subjective well-being, and place identity in rural tourism destinations. Using Naobao Village as a case study—a suburban historical and cultural village in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia—this research employs a comprehensive approach integrating experimental methods and questionnaire surveys. The findings demonstrate that analyzing the interaction among the four emotions can elucidate the cognitive mechanism of residents. Moreover, it uncovers that positive tourism effects significantly influence residents’ perception of their living environment with positive effects on collective memory, subjective well-being, and place identity. In the theoretical model for generating cognition among residents in suburban historical and cultural villages, subjective well-being and collective memory play crucial mediating roles. This study offers a novel perspective for spatial reconstruction and cultural evolution of tourist landscapes in suburban rural tourist destinations.

The purpose of this study was to explore high school course-taking sequences and their relationship to college enrollment. Specifically, we implemented sequence analysis to discover common course-taking trajectories in math, science, and English language arts using high school transcript data from a recent nationally representative survey. Through sequence clustering, we reduced the complexity of the sequences and examined representative course-taking sequences. Classification tree, random forests, and multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to explore the relationship between the course sequences students complete and their postsecondary outcomes. Results showed that distinct representative course-taking sequences can be identified for all students as well as student subgroups. More advanced and complex course-taking sequences were associated with postsecondary enrollment.

Employers of accounting graduates have criticised graduates' ability to work well with others and think critically. This study investigates aspirant Chartered Accountants in South Africa ('aspirant CA(SA)s') perceptions of the extent to which universities should and are developing relational and decision-making (RDM) skills in accounting students. Questionnaire data from 44 aspirant CA(SA)s, employed at three offices of a large audit firm in South Africa, were obtained. The majority of participants perceive that virtually all RDM skills are developed to an intermediate or advanced level during the academic programme. However, participants also perceive that the academic programme should develop all RDM skills to a greater extent; in particular, skills relating to managing others, teamwork, relationship-building, professional scepticism, emotional intelligence and leadership, to maximise performance during the training programme. Academics may benefit from this study's findings of perceived RDM skills deficits, and suggestions for their development, which includes collaborating with training offices.

Research shows that the intensity of high school course-taking is related to postsecondary outcomes. However, there are various approaches to measuring the intensity of students' course-taking. This study presents new measures of coursework intensity that rely on differing levels of quantity and quality of coursework. We used these new indices to provide a current description of variations in high school course-taking across grades and student subgroups using a nationally representative dataset, the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Results showed that for measures emphasizing the quality of coursework the gaps in coursework among underserved students were larger and there was less upward movement in rigor across grades.
