A 29-year-old girl presented complaining of acute bilateral visual loss associated with mild headache and retrobulbar pain. She was diagnosed with chiasmal optic neuritis caused by multiple sclerosis. Her visual acuity and visual field defect promptly improved after steroid therapy. However optical coherence tomography angiography showed a progressive reduction of superficial capillary plexus density of the retina and optic nerve consistent with the progressive impairment of the retinal ganglionar cell layer. Contrary to chiasmal compression, in chiasmal optic neuritis, the superficial capillary plexus density reduction is diffuse and does not reflect the peculiar anatomy of the chiasm.

Between 14 March and 21 April 2022, an extensive investigation of an extraordinary Saharan dust intrusion over Europe was performed based on lidar measurements obtained by the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET). The dust episode was divided into two distinct periods, one in March and one in April, characterized by different dust transport paths. The dust aerosol layers were studied over 18 EARLINET stations, examining aerosol characteristics during March and April in four different regions (M-I, M-II, M-III, and M-IV and A-I, A-II, A-III, and A-IV, respectively), focusing on parameters such as aerosol layer thickness, center of mass (CoM), lidar ratio (LR), particle linear depolarization ratio (PLDR), and Ångström exponents (ÅE). In March, regions exhibited varying dust geometrical and optical properties, with mean CoM values ranging from approximately 3.5 to 4.8 km, and mean LR values typically between 36 and 54 sr. PLDR values indicated the presence of both pure and mixed dust aerosols, with values ranging from 0.20 to 0.32 at 355 nm and 0.24 to 0.31 at 532 nm. ÅE values suggested a range of particle sizes, with some regions showing a predominance of coarse particles. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) simulations from the NAAPS model indicated significant dust activity across Europe, with AOD values reaching up to 1.60. In April, dust aerosol layers were observed between 3.2 to 5.2 km. Mean LR values typically ranged from 35 to 51 sr at both 355 nm and 532 nm, while PLDR values confirmed the presence of dust aerosols, with mean values between 0.22 and 0.31 at 355 nm and 0.25 to 0.31 at 532 nm. The ÅE values suggested a mixture of particle sizes. The AOD values in April were generally lower, not exceeding 0.8, indicating a less intense dust presence compared to March. The findings highlight spatial and temporal variations in aerosol characteristics across the regions, during the distinctive periods. From 15 to 16 March 2022, Saharan dust significantly reduced UV-B radiation by approximately 14% over the ATZ station (Athens, GR). Backward air mass trajectories showed that the dust originated from the Western and Central Sahara when, during this specific case, the air mass trajectories passed over GRA (Granada, ES) and PAY (Payerne, CH) before reaching ATZ, maintaining high relative humidity and almost stable aerosol properties throughout its transport. Lidar data revealed elevated aerosol backscatter (baer) and PLDR values, combined with low LR and ÅE values, indicative of pure dust aerosols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ATMOSPHERIC boundary layer ,CLOUD droplets ,CLOUD condensation nuclei ,METEOROLOGICAL satellites ,AEROSOLS - Abstract
Remote sensing has been a key resource for developing extensive and detailed datasets for studying and constraining aerosol-cloud-climate interactions. However, aerosol-cloud collocation challenges, algorithm limitations, as well as difficulties in unraveling dynamic from aerosol-related effects on cloud microphysics, have long challenged precise retrievals of cloud droplet number concentrations. By combining a series of remote sensing techniques and in situ measurements at ground level, we developed a semiautomated approach that can address several retrieval issues for a robust estimation of cloud droplet number for non-precipitating Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) clouds. The approach is based on satellite retrievals of the PBL cloud droplet number (N
d sat ) using the geostationary meteorological satellite data of the Optimal Cloud Analysis (OCA) product, which is obtained by the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) of the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The parameters of the retrieval are optimized through closure with droplet number obtained from a combination of ground-based remote sensing data and in situ observations at ground level. More specifically, the remote sensing data are used to retrieve cloud-scale vertical velocity, and the in situ aerosol measurements at ground level were used constrain as input to a state-of-the-art droplet activation parameterization to predict the respective Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) spectra, cloud maximum supersaturation and droplet number concentration (Nd ), accounting for the effects of vertical velocity distribution and lateral entrainment. Closure studies between collocated Nd and Nd sat are then used to evaluate exising droplet spectral width parameters used for the retrieval of droplet number, and determine the optimal values for retrieval. This methodology, used to study aerosol-cloud interactions for non-precipitating clouds formed over the Athens Metropolitan Area (AMA), Greece, during the springtime period from March to May 2020, shows that droplet closure can be achieved to within ±33.4%, comparable to the level of closure obtained in many in situ studies. Given this, the ease of applying this approach with satellite data obtained from SEVIRI with high temporal (15 min) and spatial resolution (3.6 km Ã--4.6 km), opens the possibility of continuous and reliable Nd sat , giving rise to high value datasets for aerosol-cloud-climate interaction studies. The Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos background TropOsphere (CALISHTO) campaign took place in autumn 2021 at the NCSR Demokritos background high-altitude Helmos Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol and Climate Change station (HAC) 2 to study the interactions between aerosols and clouds. The current study presents the chemical characterization of the non-refractory (NR) PM 1 aerosol fraction using a time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ToF-ACSM). A comparative offline aerosol filter analysis by a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) showed consistent results regarding the species determined. Source apportionment applied on both datasets (ACSM-ToF and offline AMS analysis on filter extracts) yielded the same factors for the organic aerosol (one primary and two secondary factors). Additionally, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied on the total PM 1 fraction by the ToF-ACSM (including both organic and inorganic ions). Five different types were identified, including a primary organic factor; ammonium nitrate; ammonium sulfate; and two secondary organic aerosols, one more oxidized and one less oxidized. The prevailing atmospheric conditions at the station, i.e., cloud presence, influence of emissions from the planetary boundary layer (PBL), and air mass origin, were also incorporated in the study. The segregation between PBL and free-troposphere (FT) conditions was made by combining data from remote sensing and in situ measurement techniques. The types of air masses arriving at the site were grouped as continental, marine, dust, and marine–dust based on back-trajectory data. Significant temporal variability in the aerosol characteristics was observed throughout the campaign; in September, air masses from within the PBL were sampled most of the time, resulting in much higher mass concentrations compared to October and November when concentrations were reduced by a factor of 5. Both in-cloud and FT measurement periods resulted in much lower concentration levels, while a similar composition was observed in PBL and FT conditions. We take advantage of using a recently developed "virtual-filtering" technique to separate interstitial from activated aerosol sampled from a PM 10 inlet during cloudy periods. This allows the determination of the chemical composition of the interstitial aerosol during in-cloud periods. Ammonium sulfate, the dominant PMF factor in all conditions, contributed more when air masses were arriving at (HAC) 2 during dust events, while a higher secondary organic aerosol contribution was observed when air masses arrived from continental Europe. The purpose of this study is to understand the drivers of cloud droplet formation in orographic clouds. We used a combination of modeling, in-situ and remote sensing measurements at the high-altitude Helmos Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol and Climate Change station ((HAC)
2 ), which is located at the top of Mt. Helmos (1314 metres above sea level), Greece during the Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos background TropOsphere (CALISTHO) campaign in Fall 2021 (https://calishto.panacea-ri.gr/) to examine the origins of the aerosols (i.e., local aerosol from the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), or long-range transported aerosol from the Free Tropospheric Layer (FTL) contributing to the Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN), their characteristics (hygroscopicity, size distribution and mixing state), as well as the vertical velocities distributions and resulting supersaturations. We found that the characteristics of the PBL aerosol were considerably different from FTL aerosol and use the aerosol particle number and equivalent mass concentration of the black carbon (eBC) in order to determine when the (HAC)2 was within the FTL or PBL based on timeseries of the height of the PBL. During the (HAC)2 cloud events we sample a mixture of interstitial aerosol and droplet residues, which we characterize using a new approach that utilizes the in-situ droplet measurements to determine time periods where the aerosol sample is purely interstitial. From the dataset we determine the properties (size distribution and hygroscopicity) of the pre-cloud, activated and interstitial aerosol. The hygroscopicity of activated aerosol is found to be higher than that of the interstitial or pre-cloud aerosol. A series of closure studies with the droplet parameterization shows that cloud droplet concentration (Nd ) and supersaturation can be predicted to within 25 % of observations when the aerosol size distributions correspond to pre-cloud conditions. Analysis of the characteristic supersaturation of each aerosol population indicates that droplet formation in clouds is aerosol-limited when formed in FTL airmasses – hence droplet formation is driven by aerosol variations, while clouds formed in the PBL tend to be velocity limited and droplet variations are driven by fluctuations in vertical velocity. Given that the cloud dynamics do not vary significantly between airmasses, the variation in aerosol concentration and type is mostly responsible for these shifts in cloud microphysical state and sensitivity to aerosol. With these insights, remote sensing of cloud droplets in such clouds can be used to infer either CCN spectra (when in the FTL) or vertical velocity (when in the PBL). In conclusion, we show that a coordinated measurement of aerosol and cloud properties, together with the novel analysis approaches presented here allow for the determination of the drivers of droplet formation in orographic clouds and their sensitivity to aerosol and vertical velocity variations. Atmospheric Science - Abstract
Since 2018, the Aeolus satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) has acquired wind HLOS (horizontal line-of-sight) profiles throughout the troposphere and up to the lower stratosphere, filling a critical gap in the Global Observing System (GOS). Aeolus, carrying ALADIN (Atmospheric LAser Doppler INstrument), the first UV HSRL (High Spectral Resolution Lidar) Doppler lidar ever placed in space, provides also vertically resolved optical properties of particulates (aerosols and clouds). The present study focuses on the assessment of Aeolus L2A particulate backscatter coefficient (baseline 2A11), retrieved by the Standard Correct Algorithm (SCA), in the eastern Mediterranean, a region hosting a variety of aerosol species. Ground-based retrievals acquired by lidar instruments operating in Athens (central Greece), Thessaloniki (northern Greece) and Antikythera (southwestern Greece) serve as reference. All lidar stations provide routine measurements to the PANACEA (PANhellenic infrastructure for Atmospheric Composition and climatE chAnge) network. A set of ancillary data, including sun-photometric observations (AERONET), reanalysis products (CAMS and MERRA-2), satellite observations (MSG-SEVIRI and MODIS Aqua) and backward-trajectories modelling (FLEXPART), is utilized towards an optimum characterization of the probed atmospheric conditions under the absence of a classification scheme in Aeolus SCA profiles. First, emphasis is given on the assessment of Aeolus SCA backscatter coefficient under specific aerosol scenarios over Antikythera island. Due to the misdetection of the cross-polar component of the backscattered lidar signal, Aeolus underestimates the aerosol backscatter coefficient by up to 33 % when non-spherical mineral particles are recorded (10 July 2019). A good performance is revealed on 3 July 2019, when horizontally homogeneous loads of fine spherical particles are confined below 4 km. For other two cases (8 July 2020 and 5 August 2020), due to noise issues, the SCA performance degrades in terms of depicting the stratification of aerosol layers composed of particles of different origin. According to the statistical assessment analysis of 43 identified cases, a poor-to-moderate performance is revealed for the unfiltered (aerosols plus clouds) SCA profiles, which improves substantially when cloud-contaminated profiles are excluded from the collocated sample. This improvement is evident at both Aeolus vertical scales (regular scales have 24 bins and mid-bin scales have 23 bins), and it is justified by the drastic reduction in the bias (from 0.45 to 0.27 Mm−1 sr−1 for SCA and from 0.69 to 0.37 Mm−1 sr−1 for SCA mid-bin) and root mean square error (from 2.00 to 1.65 Mm−1 sr−1 for SCA and from 1.88 to 1.00 Mm−1 sr−1 for SCA mid-bin) scores. In the vertical, the SCA performance degrades at the lowermost bins due to either the contamination from surface signals or the increased noise levels for the aerosol retrievals. Among the three PANACEA stations, the best agreement is found at the remote site of Antikythera with respect to the urban sites of Athens and Thessaloniki. Finally, all key Cal/Val (calibration and validation) aspects necessary for future relevant studies, the recommendations for a possible Aeolus follow-on mission and an overview of the ongoing related activities are thoroughly discussed.

- Abstract
This study presents part of the results of the CALISHTO campaign (Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos Background TropOsphere) that took place in autumn 2021 at the free-troposphere high-altitude Helmos station (2314 m a.s.l.). A Time-of-Flight Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ToF-ACSM, Aerodyne) was deployed among other instruments (AE31, PVM-100, SMPS, EC/OC analyzer) in the framework of the campaign. The chemical characterization of the non-refractory PM1 (NR-PM1), the influence from the Boundary Layer / Free Troposphere, the origin of the incoming masses and the influence of clouds were studied. The sources of PM1 including the non-refractory species of ACSM (organics and inorganics) combined with the equivalent black carbon were also investigated by applying the PMF model to the combined dataset. The results showed that there is a great variability of aerosol characteristics depending on the height of the PBL and the origin of the air masses. During September the station was exposed to PBL emissions, and thus displayed much higher mass concentrations of NR-PM1 than October and November. Concerning the sources of PM1, different types were identified with ammonium sulphate and oxygenated organics being predominant, as expected for aged aerosol with the degree of ageing investigated against air mass origin and microphysical parameters.

- Abstract
It is well established that the Aerosol-Cloud Interaction (ACI) processes play a key-role in global precipitation and are a strong modulator of cloud radiative forcing and climate, and yet remain poorly understood despite decades of research. Aerosol-cloud interactions are one of the most uncertain aspects of anthropogenic climate change (Seinfeld et al., 2016a; IPCC, 2021).Global datasets on cloud microphysical state – especially droplet number concentration and size distribution – provide important constraints that are required for reducing the ACI uncertainty. Recently, Quaas et al. (2020) showed that satellite remote sensing is the only approach that offers the potential of obtaining global datasets with frequent coverage; current retrieval algorithms, however, carry many uncertainties and require constraints that can only be addressed with in situ and/or ground-based remote sensing observations. Our study aims to evaluate retrievals of cloud droplet number (Nd), effective radius (reff) and optical thickness provided by the CLoud property dAtAset using SEVIRI - Edition 3 (CLAAS-3) cloud products of Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring (CM SAF). For this reason, we used co-located in-situ measurements of aerosols and cloud dynamical properties in conjunction with remote sensing observations at the high-altitude regional background station Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol and Climate Change (HAC2) during the Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos background TropOsphere (CALISHTO) campaign, which took place from Fall 2021 to Spring 2022 at Mount Helmos in Peloponnese, Greece (https://calishto.panacea-ri.gr/).In this study, we adopt an approach first applied to droplet retrievals in an urban environment (Foskinis et al. 2022). Ground-based remote sensing instrumentation involved includes a Doppler depolarization lidar (HALO) at 1550 nm to provide the vertical velocity (w) of the air masses, a Doppler cloud radar at 94 GHz (RPG) to provide the equivalent reflectivity factor (Z), and the mean Doppler velocity (VD), and a radiometer at 89 GHz provides the liquid water path (LWP). Furthermore, the in-situ instrumentations employed a co-located scanning Mobility Particle Size (SMPS) measuring the size distribution of submicron aerosol, and a Time-of-Flight Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ToF-ACSM) to provide the aerosol chemical composition of the aerosols. The in-situ dataset together with the airmass vertical velocity distributions are used as input to a state-of-the art parameterization to predict the droplet number (Nd) in clouds formed in the vicinity of the HAC2 station. Retrievals with the the CLAAS-3 cloud properties product from CMSAF are then evaluated with in-situ observations carried out with a cloud probe instrument (PVM-100) and the droplet number calculations.Compared to our previous study (Foskinis et al. 2022), this study is implemented in a different physical system, where we examined again the dependence of the Spectral Dispersion of Droplets (SDD) on Nd and we found a new optimized expression between SDD-Nd which can be used on the established droplet number retrieval algorithm (Bennartz et al., 2007) for non-precipitating planetary boundary layer clouds in order to mitigate the bias.

- Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease with a dismal 5-year survival rate of 50 values. In a Panc-1 xenograft model, phospho-aspirin, at a dose of 100 mg/kg/d 5 times per week for 30 days, reduced tumor growth by 78% (P < 0.01 vs. vehicle control). Furthermore, phospho-aspirin prevented pancreatitis-accelerated acinar-to-ductal metaplasia in mice with activated Kras. In p48-Cre;KrasG12D mice, cerulein treatment (6 hourly injections two times per week for 3 weeks) led to a significant increase in ductal metaplasia, replacing the majority of the exocrine compartment. Administration of phospho-aspirin 100 mg/kg/day five times per week for 21 days (starting on the first day of cerulein injection) inhibited the acinar-to-ductal metaplasia, reducing it by 87% (P < 0.01, vs. cerulein-treated control). Phospho-aspirin appeared to be safe, with the animals showing no signs of toxicity during treatment. Mechanistically, phospho-aspirin inhibited EGFR activation in pancreatic cancer, an effect consistently observed in pancreatic cancer cells, primary acinar explants and in vivo. In conclusion, our findings indicate that phospho-aspirin has strong anticancer efficacy in preclinical models of pancreatic cancer, warranting its further evaluation. Earth Resources And Remote Sensing - Abstract
We present the evaluation activity of the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET) for the quantitative assessment of the Level 2 aerosol backscatter coefficient product derived by the Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) aboard the International Space Station (ISS; Rodier et al., 2015). The study employs correlative CATS and EARLINET backscatter measurements within a 50 km distance between the ground station and the ISS overpass and as close in time as possible, typically with the starting time or stopping time of the EARLINET performed measurement time window within 90 min of the ISS overpass, for the period from February 2015 to September 2016. The results demonstrate the good agreement of the CATS Level 2 backscatter coefficient and EARLINET. Three ISS overpasses close to the EARLINET stations of Leipzig, Germany; Évora, Portugal; and Dushanbe, Tajikistan, are analyzed here to demonstrate the performance of the CATS lidar system under different conditions. The results show that under cloud-free, relative homogeneous aerosol conditions, CATS is in good agreement with EARLINET, independent of daytime and nighttime conditions. CATS low negative biases are observed, partially attributed to the deficiency of lidar systems to detect tenuous aerosol layers of backscatter signal below the minimum detection thresholds; these are biases which may lead to systematic deviations and slight underestimations of the total aerosol optical depth (AOD) in climate studies. In addition, CATS misclassification of aerosol layers as clouds, and vice versa, in cases of coexistent and/or adjacent aerosol and cloud features, occasionally leads to non-representative, unrealistic, and cloud-contaminated aerosol profiles. Regarding solar illumination conditions, low negative biases in CATS backscatter coefficient profiles, of the order of 6.1 %, indicate the good nighttime performance of CATS. During daytime, a reduced signal-to-noise ratio by solar background illumination prevents retrievals of weakly scattering atmospheric layers that would otherwise be detectable during nighttime, leading to higher negative biases, of the order of 22.3 %.
