The purpose of this study was to examine current trends regarding citation frequencies in music education research journals. Through a quasi-replication of the Hamann and Lucas (1998) journal eminence study, each reference in all articles of four nationally distributed publications (Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and Contributions to Music Education) over 6 years (2014–2019) were recorded, resulting in 18,401 total citations. Final tabulations recorded an increase in overall cited journals (576 to 1,451) and an increase in cited music journals (134 to 149). The 15 most cited journals in music education and adjacent research fields were ranked and grouped into three tiers. As scholarship and publication remain both essential and rewarding duties for music education scholars, the ability to inform their supervisors of the perceived eminence for their published work can be crucial evidence for tenure or promotion.

Prior research suggests that the broader social environment in which employees develop, refine, and share their ideas is crucial in promoting creativity. But employees might not always be willing to interact with their coworkers in ways conducive to the development of creative outcomes, particularly if they become overly concerned about establishing and preserving others’ perceptions of their creative ability. Using both field and experimental studies, we integrate the impression management framework and the creativity-relevant helping literatures to investigate the psychological pressures and calculative interpersonal behaviors that stem from employees’ engagement in creative work. Results across three studies provide converging evidence that, due to the arousal of creative reputation maintenance concerns (CRMC), creative individuals (relative to their less creative counterparts) engage in less creativity help-seeking and more creativity help-giving, and these effects are strengthened when individuals have previously received help from others. We discuss the implications and limitations of this work and provide future research directions.

To identify the experiences and needs of dependent children who have a parent with an acquired brain injury (ABI) using a systematic review and thematic synthesis. A systematic search of Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus, and Web of Science was conducted. The search included variants of: “children,” “parents,” “acquired brain injury,” and “experiences” or “needs.” Eligible articles reported on the experiences/needs of dependent children who have a parent with an ABI, from the child’s perspective. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes. A total of 4895 unique titles were assessed, and 9 studies met inclusion. Four themes were identified: (1) Sustained Emotional Toll (subthemes: (i) Initial Shock and Distress; (ii) Ongoing Loss and Grief; (iii) Present-Day Stress and Emotions), (2) Responsibilities Change and Children Help Out, (3) Using Coping Strategies (subtheme: Talking Can Help), and (4) Wanting Information about the Injury. Themes highlighted significant disruption and challenges to children’s wellbeing across development, with ongoing and considerable impacts many years after the parent’s injury. The nature of the experiences shifted with time since the parent’s injury. BACKGROUND Digital cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions can effectively prevent and treat depression and anxiety, but engagement with these programs is often low. Although extensive research has evaluated program use as a proxy for engagement, the extent to which users acquire knowledge and enact skills from these programs has been largely overlooked. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate how skill enactment and knowledge acquisition have been measured, evaluate postintervention changes in skill enactment and knowledge acquisition, examine whether mental health outcomes are associated with skill enactment or knowledge acquisition, and evaluate predictors of skill enactment and knowledge acquisition. METHODS PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 2000 and July 2022. We included RCTs comparing digital CBT with any comparison group in adolescents or adults (aged ≥12 years) for anxiety or depression. Eligible studies reported quantitative measures of skill enactment or knowledge acquisition. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for RCTs. Narrative synthesis was used to address the review questions. RESULTS In total, 43 papers were included, of which 29 (67%) reported a skill enactment measure and 15 (35%) reported a knowledge acquisition measure. Skill enactment was typically operationalized as the frequency of enacting skills using the completion of in-program activities (ie, formal skill enactment; 13/29, 45%) and intervention-specific (9/29, 31%) or standardized (8/29, 28%) questionnaires. Knowledge measures included tests of CBT knowledge (6/15, 40%) or mental health literacy (5/15, 33%) and self-report questionnaires (6/15, 40%). In total, 17 studies evaluated postintervention changes in skill enactment or knowledge acquisition, and findings were mostly significant for skill enactment (6/8, 75% of the studies), CBT knowledge (6/6, 100%), and mental health literacy (4/5, 80%). Of the 12 studies that evaluated the association between skill enactment and postintervention mental health outcomes, most reported ≥1 significant positive finding on standardized questionnaires (4/4, 100%), formal skill enactment indicators (5/7, 71%), or intervention-specific questionnaires (1/1, 100%). None of the 4 studies that evaluated the association between knowledge acquisition and primary mental health outcomes reported significant results. A total of 13 studies investigated predictors of skill enactment; only type of guidance and improvements in psychological variables were associated with increased skill enactment in ≥2 analyses. Predictors of knowledge acquisition were evaluated in 2 studies. CONCLUSIONS Digital CBT for depression and anxiety can improve skill enactment and knowledge acquisition. However, only skill enactment appears to be associated with mental health outcomes, which may depend on the type of measure examined. Additional research is needed to understand what types and levels of skill enactment and knowledge acquisition are most relevant for outcomes and identify predictors of these constructs. Evaluations of clinical decision support (CDS) implementation often struggle to measure and explain heterogeneity in uptake over time and across settings, and to account for the impact of context and adaptation on implementation success. In 2017–2020, the EMPOWER QUERI implemented a cardiovascular toolkit using a computerized template aimed at reducing women Veterans' cardiovascular risk across five Veterans Healthcare Administration (VA) sites, using an enhanced Replicating Effective Programs (REP) implementation approach. In this study, we used longitudinal joint displays of qualitative and quantitative findings to explore (1) how contextual factors emerged across sites, (2) how the template and implementation strategies were adapted in response to contextual factors, and (3) how contextual factors and adaptations coincided with template uptake across sites and over time. We identified site structure, staffing changes, relational authority of champions, and external leadership as important contextual factors. These factors gave rise to adaptations such as splitting the template into multiple parts, pairing the template with a computerized reminder, conducting academic detailing, creating cheat sheets, and using small-scale pilot testing. All five sites exhibited variability in utilization over the months of implementation, though later sites exhibited higher template utilization immediately post-launch, possibly reflecting a “preloading” of adaptations from previous sites. These findings underscore the importance of adaptive approaches to implementation, with intentional shifts in intervention and strategy to meet the needs of individual sites, as well as the value of integrating mixed-method data sources in conducting longitudinal evaluation of implementation efforts.

Commonly in survey research, multiple, different analyses are conducted by one or more than one researcher on the same data set. The conclusions from these analyses should be consistent despite the presence of missing data. Multiple imputation is frequently used to ensure consistency of analyses. Two methods for multiple impu- tation of missing data are a combination of hot deck and regression imputation, and multivariate normal multiple imputation. It is un- known whether these methods will give similar results in practical situations with large numbers of variables. We applied both mul- tiple imputation methods to a cancer screening survey data with 2 continuous, 48 Likert scale items, and 74 binary response items. Correlations and variances of imputated data sets were compared in a first attempt to investigate similarity of the imputation meth- ods. The results of both methods were found to be similar; either of the two methods are endorsed for surveys similar to the data set presented.

Although the use of animals as therapeutic interventions is becoming more popular in treating veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is still a gap in research regarding its effects. The existing PTSD treatment guidelines display a neutral position when discussing alternative and complimentary therapy options. The evidence suggests that animals can be beneficial for improving symptoms as well as important to the management and recovery of veterans with PTSD. Pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are considered the gold standard for treatment. This pilot study focuses on a community outpatient support group of United States veterans with self-reported PTSD symptoms and the impact of therapy animals on PTSD symptoms over 3 months. The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model was used to guide the development and implementation of this project. For this pilot study, the format of meetings was changed to allow certified therapy animals into each monthly meeting. Over a 3-month period, data before and after the animal intervention were collected. Sample size varied each month, depending on the number of veterans who attended the meeting. An average of 8 participants attended each meeting. Results showed the participants’ PTSD symptoms were improved after interacting with the animals; however, no statistical significance was found. Furthermore, it is suggested that health care providers and those treating patients with PTSD become aware of the use of certified therapy animals as complementary and/or alternative therapy in treatment for the veteran population.

Background Poor comprehension and low compliance with post-ED (emergency department) care plans increase the risk of unscheduled ED return visits and adverse outcomes. Despite the growth of personal health records to support transitions of care, technological innovation's focus on the ED discharge process has been limited. Recent literature suggests that digital communication incorporated into post-ED care can improve patient satisfaction and care quality. Objectives We evaluated the feasibility of utilizing MyEDCare, a text message and smartphone-based electronic ED discharge process at two urban EDs. Methods MyEDCare sends text messages to patients' smartphones at the time of discharge, containing a hyperlink to a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant website, to deliver patient-specific ED discharge instructions. Content includes information on therapeutics, new medications, outpatient care scheduling, return precautions, as well as results of laboratory and radiological diagnostic testing performed in the ED. Three text messages are sent to patients: at the time of ED discharge with the nurse assistance for initial access of content, as well as 2 and 29 days after ED discharge. MyEDCare was piloted in a 9-month pilot period in 2019 at two urban EDs in an academic medical center. We evaluated ED return visits, ED staff satisfaction, and patient satisfaction using ED Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (ED-CAHPS) patient satisfaction scores. Results MyEDCare enrolled 27,713 patients discharged from the two EDs, accounting for 43% of treat-and-release ED patients. Of the treat-and-release patients, 27% completed MyEDCare discharge process, accessing the online content at the time of ED discharge. Patients discharged via MyEDCare had fewer 72-hour, 9-day, and 30-day unscheduled return ED visits and reported higher satisfaction related to nursing care. Conclusion EDs and urgent care facilities may consider developing a HIPAA-compliant, text message, and smartphone-based discharge process, including the transmission of test results, to improve patient-centered outcomes.

Palliative care has expanded rapidly in the past 20 years, especially in the ambulatory (office) setting, and there is growing consensus regarding the need to systematically measure and incentivize high-quality care. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services entered a cooperative agreement with the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) as part of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 to develop two patient-reported measures of ambulatory palliative care experience: Feeling Heard and Understood and Receiving Desired Help for Pain. Under contract to AAHPM, RAND Health Care researchers developed and tested both measures over a three-year project period. Researcher efforts included identifying, developing, testing, and validating appropriate patient-reported data elements for each measure; developing and fielding a survey instrument to collect necessary data in a national beta field test with 44 ambulatory palliative care programs; and collecting and analyzing data about measure reliability and validity to establish measure performance and final specifications. Further, the authors elicited provider and program perspectives on the use and value of the performance measures and their implementation and elicited the perspectives of patients from racial and ethnic minorities to understand their experience of ambulatory palliative care and optimal approaches to measurement. In this study, the authors present results from their test of the Feeling Heard and Understood performance measure, which they demonstrate to be a reliable and valid measure that is ready for use in quality improvement and quality payment programs.

Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for subcutaneous (SC), intermuscular (InterM), and intramuscular (IntraM) mast cell tumors (MCTs). Advanced imaging (CT or MRI) is frequently used for presurgical planning, but InterM and IntraM MCTs can be difficult to identify and delineate on CT. Aims of the current retrospective, diagnostic accuracy, observer agreement study were to describe the imaging features of SC, InterM, and IntraM MCTs on CT and to assess the limitation of CT to identify the full local extent of the MCT. Inclusion criteria for the study were dogs with a cytologically or histologically diagnosed MCTs determined to be SC, InterM, or IntraM MCT based on histology and/or a CT scan performed in the gross disease setting. Two board-certified veterinary radiologists reviewed the CT images and recorded location, contrast enhancement pattern, and delineation between the normal and abnormal tissue. Sensitivity and specificity of CT for determining location (SC/InterM versus IntraM) was 85.71% and 55.56%, respectively, when compared to consensus location based on surgical pathology report/CT/MRI review. There was a low inter-rater agreement for delineation (kappa: 0.150 (-0.070 to 0.370) and measurement had a low/moderate correlation (rho: 0.4667 to 0.5792). Upon review by a surgical oncologist, CT findings were deemed insufficient for curative surgical planning in 13 of 16 due to inadequate definition of tumor depth, compartment boundary (fascial plane) or MCT margins. The use of CT for presurgical planning of SC/InterM/IntraM MCT dogs has limitations, especially when differentiating MCT from the adjacent muscle.

The pandemic of COVID-19 has been particularly severe in the New York City area, which has had one of the highest concentrations of cases in the USA. In March 2020, the EDs of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, a 10-hospital health system in the region, began to experience a rapid surge in patients with COVID-19 symptoms. Emergency physicians were faced with a disease that they knew little about that quickly overwhelmed resources. A significant amount of attention has been placed on the problem of limited supply of ventilators and intensive care beds for critically ill patients in the setting of the ongoing global pandemic. Relatively less has been given to the issue that precedes it: the demand on resources posed by patients who are not yet critically ill but are unwell enough to seek care in the ED. We describe here how at one institution, a cross-campus ED physician working group produced a care pathway to guide clinicians and ensure the fair and effective allocation of resources in the setting of the developing public health crisis. This ‘crisis clinical pathway’ focused on using clinical evaluation for medical decision making and maximising benefit to patients throughout the system.
