Gravitational instability (GI) controls the dynamics of young massive protoplanetary discs. Apart from facilitating gas accretion on to the central protostar, it must also impact on the process of planet formation: directly through fragmentation, and indirectly through the turbulent concentration of small solids. To understand the latter process, it is essential to determine the dust dynamics in such a turbulent flow. For that purpose, we conduct a series of 3D shearing box simulations of coupled gas and dust, including the gas's self-gravity and scanning a range of Stokes numbers, from 0.001 to ~0.2. First, we show that the vertical settling of dust in the midplane is significantly impeded by gravitoturbulence, with the dust scale-height roughly 0.6 times the gas scale height for centimetre grains. This is a result of the strong vertical diffusion issuing from (a) small-scale inertial-wave turbulence feeding off the GI spiral waves and (b) the larger-scale vertical circulations that naturally accompany the spirals. Second, we show that at R=50 AU concentration events involving sub-metre particles and yielding order 1 dust to gas ratios are rare and last for less than an orbit. Moreover, dust concentration is less efficient in 3D than in 2D simulations. We conclude that GI is not especially prone to the turbulent accumulation of dust grains. Finally, the large dust scale-height measured in simulations could be, in the future, compared with that of edge-on discs seen by ALMA, thus aiding detection and characterisation of GI in real systems., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS, 13 pages

Semi-analytical models of disk outflows have successfully described magnetically-driven, self-confined super-Alfv\'enic jets from near Keplerian accretion disks. These Jet Emitting Disks are possible for high levels of disk magnetization $\mu$ defined as $\mu=2/\beta$ where beta is the usual plasma parameter. In near-equipartition JEDs, accretion is supersonic and jets carry away most of the disk angular momentum. However, these solutions prove difficult to compare with cutting edge numerical simulations, for the reason that numerical simulations show wind-like outflows but in the domain of small magnetization. In this work, we present for the first time self-similar isothermal solutions for accretion-ejection structures at small magnetization levels. We elucidate the role of MRI-like structures in the acceleration processes that drive this new class of solutions. The disk magnetization $\mu$ is the main control parameter: massive outflows driven by the pressure of the toroidal magnetic field are obtained up to $\mu \sim 10^{-2}$, while more tenuous centrifugally-driven outflows are obtained at larger $\mu$ values. The generalized parameter space and the astrophysical consequences are discussed. We believe that these new solutions could be a stepping stone in understanding the way astrophysical disks drive either winds or jets. Defining jets as self-confined outflows and winds as uncollimated outflows, we propose a simple analytical criterion based on the initial energy content of the outflow, to discriminate jets from winds. Rings and gaps have been observed in a wide range of protoplanetary discs, from young systems like HLTau to older discs like TW Hydra. Recent disc simulations have shown that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence (in the ideal or non-ideal regime) can lead to the formation of rings and be an alternative to the embedded planets scenario. In this paper, we investigate how these ring form in this context and seek a generic formation process, taking into account the various dissipative regimes and magnetizations probed by the past simulations. We identify the existence of a linear and secular instability, driven by MHD winds, and giving birth to rings of gas having a width larger than the disc scale height. We show that the linear theory is able to make reliable predictions regarding the growth rates, ring/gap contrast and spacing, by comparing these predictions to a series of 2D (axisymmetric) and 3D MHD numerical simulations. In addition, we demonstrate that these rings can act as dust traps provided that the disc is sufficiently magnetised, with plasma beta lower than $10^4$. Dwarf novae (DNe) and X-ray binaries exhibit outbursts thought to be due to a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk. The disk instability model (DIM) assumes that accretion is driven by turbulent transport, customarily attributed to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). Recent results point out that MRI turbulence alone fails to reproduce the light curves of DNe. We aim to study the impact of wind-driven accretion on the light curves of DNe. Local and global simulations show that magneto-hydrodynamic winds are present when a magnetic field threads the disk, even for relatively high ratios of thermal pressure to magnetic pressure ($\beta \approx 10^{5}$). These winds are very efficient in removing angular momentum but do not heat the disk; they do not behave as MRI-driven turbulence. We add wind-driven transport in the angular momentum equation of the DIM, assuming a fixed magnetic configuration: dipolar or constant with radius. We use prescriptions for the wind torque and the turbulent torque derived from shearing box simulations. The wind torque enhances the accretion of matter, resulting in light curves that look like DNe outbursts when assuming a dipolar field with a moment $\mu\approx10^{30}\,\mathrm{G\,cm^{3}}$. In the region where the wind dominates, the disk is cold, optically thin and the accretion speed is sonic. This acts as if the inner disk was truncated, leading to higher quiescent X-ray luminosities from the white dwarf boundary layer than expected with the standard DIM. The disk is stabilized if the wind-dominated region is large enough, potentially leading to `dark' disks emitting little radiation. Wind-driven accretion can play a key role in shaping the light curves of DNe and X-ray binaries. Context. Disks around pre-main-sequence stars evolve over time by turbulent viscous spreading. The main contender to explain the strength of the turbulence is the Magneto-Rotational-Instability (MRI) model, whose efficiency depends on the disk ionization fraction. Aims. We aim at computing self-consistently the chemistry including PAH charge chemistry, the grain charging and an estimate of an effective value of the turbulence alpha parameter in order to find observational signatures of disk turbulence. Methods. We introduced PAH and grain charging physics and their interplay with other gas-phase reactions in the physico-chemical code ProDiMo. Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics effects such as Ohmic and ambipolar diffusion are parametrized to derive an effective value for the turbulent parameter alpha_eff . We explored the effects of turbulence heating and line broadening on CO isotopologue sub-millimeter lines. Results. The spatial distribution of alpha_eff depends on various unconstrained disk parameters such as the magnetic parameter beta_mag or the cosmic ray density distribution inside the protoplanetary disks. The inner disk midplane shows the presence of the so-called dead-zone where the turbulence is quasi-inexistent. The disk is heated mostly by thermal accommodation on dust grains in the dead-zone, by viscous heating outside the dead-zone up to a few hundred astronomical units, and by chemical heating in the outer disk. The CO rotational lines probe the warm molecular disk layers where the turbulence is at its maximum. However, the effect of turbulence on the CO line profiles is minimal and difficult to distinguish from the thermal broadening. Conclusions. Viscous heating of the gas in the disk midplane outside the dead-zone is efficient. Dwarf novae (DNe) are accreting white dwarfs that show eruptions due to a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk. The outburst timescales constrain $\alpha$, the ratio of the viscous stress to the thermal pressure, and so the mechanism of angular momentum transport. The eruptive state has $\alpha\approx0.1$ while the quiescent state has $\alpha\approx0.03$. Turbulent transport due to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) is generally considered to be the source of angular momentum transport in DNe. Here, we perform 3D local magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shearing box simulations including vertical stratification, radiative transfer and a net constant vertical magnetic flux to investigate how transport changes between the outburst and quiescent states of DNe. We find that a constant $B_z$ provides a higher $\alpha$ in quiescence than in outburst, in opposition to what is expected. Including resistivity quenches MRI turbulence in quiescence, suppressing transport, unless the magnetic field is high enough, which again leads to $\alpha\approx0.1$. A major difference between simulations with a net poloidal flux and simulations without is that angular momentum transport in the former is shared between turbulent and wind-driven transport. We find that wind-driven transport dominates in quiescence even for low magnetic fields $\sim 1$ G. This can have a major impact on observational signatures since wind-driven transport does not heat the disk. Furthermore, wind transport cannot be reduced to an $\alpha$ prescription. We provide fits for $\alpha$ and the wind torque with $\beta$, ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure. We conclude that the evolution of the thermal-viscous instability, and its consequences on the outburst cycles of CVs, needs to be seriously revised to take into account that most of the accretion energy may be carried away by a wind instead of being locally dissipated., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted in A&A. MHD turbulence plays a crucial role in the dust dynamics of protoplanetary discs. It affects planet formation, vertical settling and is one possible origin of the large scale axisymmetric structures, such as rings, recently imaged by ALMA and SPHERE. Among the variety of MHD processes, the magnetorotational instability (MRI) has raised particular interest since it provides a source of turbulence and potentially organizes the flow into radial structures. However, the weak ionization of discs prevents the MRI from being excited beyond 1 AU. The strong sedimentation of millimetre dust measured in T-Tauri discs is also in contradiction with predictions based on ideal MRI turbulence. In this paper, we study the effects of non-ideal MHD and winds on the dynamics and sedimentation of dust grains. We consider a weakly ionized plasma subject to ambipolar diffusion characterizing the disc outer regions (>1 AU). For that, we perform numerical MHD simulations in the stratified shearing box, using the PLUTO code. Our simulations show that the mm-cm dust is contained vertically in a very thin layer, with typical heightscale ~0.4 AU at 30 AU, compatible with recent ALMA observations. Horizontally, the grains are trapped within pressure maxima induced by ambipolar diffusion, leading to the formation of dust rings. For micrometer grains, dust and gas scaleheights are similar. In this regime, the settling cannot be explained by a simple 1D diffusion theory but results from a large scale 2D circulation induced by both MHD winds and zonal flows. Overall, our results show that non-ideal MHD effects and their related winds play a major role in shaping the radial and vertical distribution of dust in protoplanetary discs. The apelinergic system is an important player in the regulation of both vascular tone and cardiovascular function, making this physiological system an attractive target for drug development for hypertension, heart failure and ischemic heart disease. Indeed, apelin exerts a positive inotropic effect in humans whilst reducing peripheral vascular resistance. In this study, we investigated the signaling pathways through which apelin exerts its hypotensive action. We synthesized a series of apelin-13 analogs whereby the C-terminal Phe13 residue was replaced by natural or unnatural amino acids. In HEK293 cells expressing APJ, we evaluated the relative efficacy of these compounds to activate G{\alpha}i1 and G{\alpha}oA G-proteins, recruit \b{eta}-arrestins 1 and 2 (\b{eta}arrs), and inhibit cAMP production. Calculating the transduction ratio for each pathway allowed us to identify several analogs with distinct signaling profiles. Furthermore, we found that these analogs delivered i.v. to Sprague-Dawley rats exerted a wide range of hypotensive responses. Indeed, two compounds lost their ability to lower blood pressure, while other analogs significantly reduced blood pressure as apelin-13. Interestingly, analogs that did not lower blood pressure were less effective at recruiting \b{eta}arrs. Finally, using Spearman correlations, we established that the hypotensive response was significantly correlated with \b{eta}arr recruitment but not with G protein- dependent signaling. The coupled evolution of the magnetic field and the flow at the Earth's core mantle boundary is modeled within the 1900.0-2014.0 time period. To constraint the dynamical behavior of the system with a core field model deriving from direct measurements of the Earth's magnetic field we used an Ensemble Kalman filter algorithm. By simulating an ensemble of possible states, access to the complete statistical properties of the considered fields is available. Furthermore, the method enables to provide predictions and to assess their reliability. In this study, we could highlight the cohabitation of two distinct flow regimes. One associated with the large scale part of the eccentric gyre, which evolves slowly in time and posses a very long memory of its past, and a faster one associated with the small scale velocity field. We show that the latter can exhibit rapid variations in localized areas. The combination of the two regimes can predict quite well the decadal variations in length of day, but it can also explain the discrepancies between the physically predicted and the observed trend in these variations. Hindcast tests demonstrate that the model is well balanced and that it can provide accurate short term predictions of a mean state and its associated uncertainties. However, magnetic field predictions are limited by the high randomization rate of the different velocity field scales, and after approximately 2000 years of forecast, no reliable information on the core field can be recovered., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2tables

The eruptive cycles of dwarf novae (DN) are thought to be due to a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk surrounding the white dwarf (WD). This model has long been known to imply a stress to pressure ratio \alpha ~0.1 in outburst compared to \alpha ~ 0.01 in quiescence. Such an enhancement in $\alpha$ has recently been observed in simulations of turbulent transport driven by the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) when convection is present, without requiring a net magnetic flux. We independently recover this result by carrying out PLUTO MHD simulations of vertically stratified, radiative, shearing boxes with the thermodynamics and opacities appropriate to DN. The results are robust against the choice of vertical boundary conditions. The thermal equilibrium solutions found by the simulations trace the well-known S-curve in the density-temperature plane. We confirm that the high values of \alpha ~ 0.1 occur near the tip of the hot branch of the S-curve, where convection is active. However, we also present thermally-stable simulations at lower temperatures that have standard values of \alpha ~ 0.03 despite the presence of vigorous convection. We find no simple relationship between \alpha and the strength of the convection, as measured by the ratio of convective to radiative flux. The cold branch is only very weakly ionized so, in the second part of this work, we studied the impact of non-ideal MHD effects on transport. We include resistivity in the simulations and find that the MRI-driven transport is quenched (\alpha ~ 0) below the critical density at which the magnetic Reynolds number R_m \leq 10^4. This is problematic as X-ray emission observed in quiescent systems requires ongoing accretion onto the WD. We verify that these X-rays cannot self-sustain MRI-driven turbulence by photo-ionizing the disk and discuss possible solutions to the issue of accretion in quiescence., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in A&A

We examine the properties of strongly magnetized accretion discs in a global framework, with particular focus on the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities such as the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Work by Pessah and Psaltis showed that MRI is stabilized beyond a critical toroidal field in compressible, differentially rotating flows and, also, reported the appearance of two new instabilities beyond this field. Their results stemmed from considering geometric curvature effects due to the suprathermal background toroidal field, which had been previously ignored in weak-field studies. However, their calculations were performed under the local approximation, which poses the danger of introducing spurious behavior due to the introduction of global geometric terms in an otherwise local framework. In order to avoid this, we perform a global eigenvalue analysis of the linearized MHD equations in cylindrical geometry. We confirm that MRI indeed tends to be highly suppressed when the background toroidal field attains the Pessah-Psaltis limit. We also observe the appearance of two new instabilities that emerge in the presence of highly suprathermal toroidal fields. These results were additionally verified using numerical simulations in PLUTO. There are, however, certain differences between the the local and global results, especially in the vertical wavenumber occupancies of the various instabilities, which we discuss in detail. We also study the global eigenfunctions of the most unstable modes in the suprathermal regime, which are inaccessible in the local analysis. The radial transport of angular momentum in accretion disk is a fundamental process in the universe. It governs the dynamical evolution of accretion disks and has implications for various issues ranging from the formation of planets to the growth of supermassive black holes. While the importance of magnetic fields for this problem has long been demonstrated, the existence of a source of transport solely hydrodynamical in nature has proven more difficult to establish and to quantify. In recent years, a combination of results coming from experiments, theoretical work and numerical simulations has dramatically improved our understanding of hydrodynamically mediated angular momentum transport in accretion disk. The intermittent small-scale structure of turbulence governs energy dissipation in many astrophysical plasmas and is often believed to have universal properties for sufficiently large systems. In this work, we argue that small-scale turbulence in accretion disks is universal in the sense that it is insensitive to the magnetorotational instability (MRI) and background shear, and therefore indistinguishable from standard homogeneous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence at small scales. We investigate the intermittency of current density, vorticity, and energy dissipation in numerical simulations of incompressible MHD turbulence driven by the MRI in a shearing box. We find that the simulations exhibit a similar degree of intermittency as in standard MHD turbulence. We perform a statistical analysis of intermittent dissipative structures and find that energy dissipation is concentrated in thin sheet-like structures that span a wide range of scales up to the box size. We show that these structures exhibit strikingly similar statistical properties to those in standard MHD turbulence. The planet-forming region of protoplanetary disks is cold, dense, and therefore weakly ionized. For this reason, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is thought to be mostly absent, and another mechanism has to be found to explain gas accretion. It has been proposed that magnetized winds, launched from the ionized disk surface, could drive accretion in the presence of a large-scale magnetic field. The efficiency and the impact of these surface winds on the disk structure is still highly uncertain. We present the first global simulations of a weakly ionized disk that exhibits large-scale magnetized winds. We also study the impact of self-organization, which was previously demonstrated only in non-stratified models. We perform numerical simulations of stratified disks with the PLUTO code. We compute the ionization fraction dynamically, and account for all three non-ideal MHD effects: ohmic and ambipolar diffusions, and the Hall drift. Simplified heating and cooling due to non-thermal radiation is also taken into account in the disk atmosphere. We find that disks can be accreting or not, depending on the configuration of the large-scale magnetic field. Magnetothermal winds, driven both by magnetic acceleration and heating of the atmosphere, are obtained in the accreting case. In some cases, these winds are asymmetric, ejecting predominantly on one side of the disk. The wind mass loss rate depends primarily on the average ratio of magnetic to thermal pressure in the disk midplane. The non-accreting case is characterized by a meridional circulation, with accretion layers at the disk surface and decretion in the midplane. Finally, we observe self-organization, resulting in axisymmetric rings of density and associated pressure "bumps". Understanding how accretion proceeds in proto-planetary discs and more generally their dynamics is a crucial issue for explaining the conditions in which planets form. The role that accretion of gas from the surrounding molecular cloud onto the disc may have on its structure needs to be quantified. We perform tri-dimensional simulations using the Cartesian AMR code RAMSES of an accretion disc subject to infalling material. For the aspect ratio of $H/R \simeq 0.15$ and disk mass $M_d \simeq 10^{-2}$ M$_\odot$ used in our study, we find that for typical accretion rates on the order of a few 10$^{-7}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, values of the $\alpha$ parameter as high as a few 10$^{-3}$ are inferred. The mass that is accreted in the inner part of the disc is typically at least $50\%$ of the total mass that has been accreted onto the disc. Our results suggest that external accretion of gas at moderate values, onto circumstellar discs may trigger prominent spiral arms, reminiscent of recent observations made with various instruments, and lead to significant transport through the disc.
