Abstract

Neurological disorders present a wide range of symptoms and challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Cannabis sativa, with its diverse chemical composition, offers potential therapeutic benefits due to its anticonvulsive, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Beyond cannabinoids, cannabis contains terpenes and polyphenols, which synergistically enhance its pharmacological effects. Various administration routes, including vaporization, oral ingestion, sublingual, and rectal, provide flexibility in treatment delivery. This review shows the therapeutic efficacy of cannabis in managing neurological disorders such as epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, psychiatric disorders, and painful pathologies. Drawing from surveys, patient studies, and clinical trials, it highlights the potential of cannabis in alleviating symptoms, slowing disease progression, and improving overall quality of life for patients. Understanding the diverse therapeutic mechanisms of cannabis can open up possibilities for using this plant for individual patient needs.

Abstract

Phenomenologically interesting scalar potentials are highly atypical in generic random landscapes. We develop the mathematical techniques to generate constrained random potentials, i.e. Slepian models, which can globally represent low-probability realizations of the landscape. We give analytical as well as numerical methods to construct these Slepian models for constrained realizations of a full Gaussian random field around critical as well as inflection points. We use these techniques to numerically generate in an efficient way a large number of minima at arbitrary heights of the potential and calculate their non-perturbative decay rate. Furthermore, we also illustrate how to use these methods by obtaining statistical information about the distribution of observables in an inflationary inflection point constructed within these models., Comment: 51 pages, 14 figures

In this work we study the problem of first order perturbations of a general hypersurface, i.e. with arbitrary causal character at each point. We extend the framework by Mars (Class. Quantum Grav. 22 3325 (2005)) where this problem was studied to second order for everywhere timelike or spacelike hypersurfaces, and we adapt it to cover the general case. Abstract

In this paper we present the ADAPT system built for the Basque to English Low Resource MT Evaluation Campaign. Basque is a low-resourced, morphologically-rich language. This poses a challenge for Neural Machine Translation models which usually achieve better performance when trained with large sets of data. Accordingly, we used synthetic data to improve the translation quality produced by a model built using only authentic data. Our proposal uses back-translated data to: (a) create new sentences, so the system can be trained with more data; and (b) translate sentences that are close to the test set, so the model can be fine-tuned to the document to be translated.

Abstract

Inspired by the simple, yet effective, method of tweeting gibberish to attract automated social agents (bots), we attempt to create localised honeypots in the South African political context. We produce a series of defined techniques and combine them to generate interactions from users on Twitter. The paper offers two key contributions. Conceptually, an argument is made that honeypots should not be confused for bot detection methods, but are rather methods to capture low-quality users. Secondly, we successfully generate a list of 288 local low quality users active in the political context.

Abstract

We characterise the geometrical nature of smooth supertranslations defined on a generic non-expanding horizon (NEH) embedded in vacuum. To this end we consider the constraints imposed by the vacuum Einstein's equations on the NEH structure, and discuss the transformation properties of their solutions under supertranslations. We present a freely specifiable data set which is both necessary and sufficient to reconstruct the full horizon geometry, and is composed of objects which are invariant under supertranslations. We conclude that smooth supertranslations do not transform the geometry of the NEH, and that they should be regarded as pure gauge. Our results apply both to stationary, and non-stationary states of a NEH, the later ones being able to describe radiative processes taking place on the horizon. As a consistency check we repeat the analysis for BMS supertranslations defined on null infinity, $\mathcal{I}$. Using the same framework as for the NEH we recover the well known result that BMS supertranslations act non-trivially on the free data on $\mathcal{I}$. Abstract

We employ the differential evolution (DE) method to analyze observations from the Solar X-Ray Monitor on board the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft. DE belongs to the family of evolutionary algorithms that find solutions using mechanisms inspired by biological processes. This approach enables us to simultaneously calculate the distribution of the differential emission measure and elemental abundances through an iterative process. We establish a model for the emission sources of flaring plasma, incorporating temperature, emission measure, and abundances of eight elements: Mg, Al, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni, for an M3.9 GOES-class solar flare that occurred on 2021 May 7 (SOL2021-05-07T19:04). Our analysis covers various phases of the flare, determining the evolution of temperature, emission measure, and elemental abundances. Additionally, utilizing data from the Spectrometer Telescope for Imaging X-rays on board the Solar Orbiter, we investigate the evolution of hard X-ray source morphology, source volume, electron density, and thermal behavior of the flaring plasma throughout the event. The results reveal notable variations in elemental abundances between photospheric and coronal values during different flare phases. This emphasizes the significance of elemental abundance information in comprehending X-ray emissions during solar flares.

95. Bubbles of Nothing and Supersymmetric Compactifications

Abstract

We investigate the non-perturbative stability of supersymmetric compactifications with respect to decay via a bubble of nothing. We show examples where this kind of instability is not prohibited by the spin structure, i.e., periodicity of fermions about the extra dimension. However, such "topologically unobstructed" cases do exhibit an extra-dimensional analog of the well-known Coleman-De Luccia suppression mechanism, which prohibits the decay of supersymmetric vacua. We demonstrate this explicitly in a four dimensional Abelian-Higgs toy model coupled to supergravity. The compactification of this model to $M_3 \times S_1$ presents the possibility of vacua with different windings for the scalar field. Away from the supersymmetric limit, these states decay by the formation of a bubble of nothing, dressed with an Abelian-Higgs vortex. We show how, as one approaches the supersymmetric limit, the circumference of the topologically unobstructed bubble becomes infinite, thereby preventing the realization of this decay. This demonstrates the dynamical origin of the decay suppression, as opposed to the more familiar argument based on the spin structure. 96. Universal Properties of Type IIB and F-theory Flux Compactifications at Large Complex Structure

Abstract

We consider flux compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory in which the respective superpotentials at large complex structure are dominated by cubic or quartic terms in the complex structure moduli. In this limit, the low-energy effective theory for the complex structure and axio-dilaton sector exhibits universal properties that are insensitive to the details of the compactification manifold or the flux configuration. We show that there are no vacua in this region and the spectrum of the Hessian matrix is highly peaked and consists only of three distinct eigenvalues ($0$, $2m_{3/2}^2$ and $8m_{3/2}^2$), independently of the number of moduli. We briefly comment on how the inclusion of K\"ahler moduli affect these findings. Our results generalise those of Brodie & Marsh [1], in which these universal properties were found in a subspace of the large complex structure limit of type IIB compactifications., Comment: 19 pages, published version
